Description

SYSTEM FOR REGULATING TEMPERATURE OF AN ELECTRONIC COMPONENTTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of wireless communications. More particularly, it relates to a system for regulating temperature of an electronic component and to an apparatus for a wireless communications network, where the apparatus comprises the system.BACKGROUND

[0002] An apparatus for a wireless communications network (such as routers, baseband units, and radio units) may be required to operate in a wide range of ambient temperatures, for example -40℃ to 55℃, to make the apparatus adaptable to any severe environment. To be able to handle the upper temperatures in the temperature range (e.g., 55℃) , the apparatus should provide an efficient heat release path for the electronic components (such as integrated circuits) of the apparatus to dissipate heat generated by those electronic components. A common strategy when designing an apparatus, which should be able to handle the lower temperatures in the temperature range (e.g., -40℃) , is to select electronic components than can endure those low temperatures during operation. An advantage of such a strategy is that no special measures or modification of the apparatus is required. However, there are some electronic components that are temperature sensitive and that cannot withstand the lower temperatures in the temperature range during operation. For such temperature-sensitive electronic components, special measures are required for the apparatus to properly handle the lower temperatures in the temperature range.

[0003] There are a few methods for adapting the apparatus with temperature-sensitive electronic components to handle the lower temperatures in the temperature range. In some cases, when the power consumption of a particular temperature-sensitive electronic component is large enough, the particular temperature-sensitive component can be warmed up to normal operating temperature by self-heating. In particular, software may disable / enable full function of the particular temperature-sensitive electronic component and may be arranged to control fans of the apparatus according to an operating temperature of the temperature-sensitive electronic component. In some other cases, the apparatus with the temperature-sensitive electronic component is heated up by means of remote heat source (e.g., a cabinet with a heater) . The remote heat source will convey heat to the apparatus by means of convection or conduction to warm up the apparatus and the temperature-sensitive electronic component. In still some other cases, the apparatus is provided with a local heater to heat up the temperature-sensitive electronic component whenever needed. The local heater may, e.g., be positioned on printed circuit board (PCB) and around the  temperature-sensitive electronic component or be position in direct thermal contact on top of the temperature-sensitive electronic component and separated from the PCB.

[0004] The existing technologies present different drawbacks. The self-heating method requires power consumption of temperature-sensitive electronic component high enough, which is not always the case. Furthermore, the self-heating method may be required to switch on / off fans frequently, which may be undesired and cause problems such as unstable synchronization. Moreover, the start-up time for the apparatus when heating up the temperature-sensitive component is typically long when the self-heating method is used. Not all installation places can provide a remote heat source for heating up the apparatus. Furthermore, the start-up time for the apparatus when heating up the temperature-sensitive component is typically long when using a remote heat source since it takes time for the heat to propagate from the remote heat source to the temperature-sensitive electronic component. Using a local heater is typically a preferred solution.

[0005] US20140151014A1 discloses a system for regulating temperature of electronic component. In a first embodiment, a local heater is arranged on an opposite side of a PCB compared to an electronic component. In a second embodiment, the local heater surrounds the electronic component and is in direct thermal contact with an electronic component.

[0006] US20230062660A1 discloses a temperature dependent electronic component heating system, where a heating element is in direct thermal contact with, and is arranged in-between, an electronic component and a heat-conductive body.

[0007] However, there is need for improved ways of regulating temperature of an electronic component.SUMMARY

[0008] It is an object of the present disclosure to mitigate, alleviate or eliminate one or more of the above-identified deficiencies and disadvantages in the prior art and solve at least the above-mentioned problem. In particular, an object is to provide improved systems for regulating temperature of an electronic component. This object is attained at least in part by a system for regulating temperature of an electronic component. The system comprises a heat sink for dissipating heat from the electronic component. The system further comprises a heat-conductive body arranged in thermal contact with the heat sink. The heat-conductive body is configured to be arranged in thermal contact with the electronic component such that heat generated by the electronic component is transferred to the heat sink via the heat-conductive body. The system also comprises a heating element arranged in thermal contact with the heat-conductive body. The heating element is configured to selectively generate heat to be transferred to the electronic component via the heat-conductive body.

[0009] Most electronic components are designed with a thermal interface, which is surface for the heat release path for the electronic component. For example, the electronic component may be encapsulated by a casing, which is a planar structure where the bottom is arranged to interface the substrate (such as a PCB) and the top part is arranged to be in thermal contact with a heat sink. The disclosed system enables a low thermal resistance path from the heating element to the thermal interface on the electronic component. Thus, the disclosed system enables an improved heat transfer from the heating element to the electronic component compared to other solutions where the electronic component is heated by the heating element via the PCB, which presents lager heat transfer resistance than a typical thermal interface on the electronic component. Furthermore, the disclosed system enables an improved heat transfer from the heating element to the electronic component compared to other solutions where the electronic component is heated by the heating element via other parts than the thermal interface of the casing of the electronic component.

[0010] The disclosed system enables an improved cooling of the electronic component (i.e., heat transfer from the electronic component to the heat sink) compared to other solutions where the heating element is arranged in-between the heat sink and the electronic component. A reason is that most heating elements present a relatively high thermal resistance between the heat sink and the electronic component in said other solutions. In some of said other solutions, there may be few types of heating elements presenting relatively low thermal resistance. However, the choice of suitable low-resistance heating elements for said other solutions would be limited and may present other disadvantages, such as being expensive. A wide variety of heating elements may be used in the disclosed system. Thus, the disclosed system may enable a cost-effective solution.

[0011] The disclosed system enables an apparatus comprising the disclosed system to have space around the electronic component. This space enables the presence of bulky components, such as capacitors, to be present on the PCB around the electronic component. In addition, the disclosed system does not require an arrangement of the heating element where it may interfere with the fidelity of electronic signals of the PCB, which may be the case in other solutions where the heating element is in direct thermal contact with the electronic component or other solutions where the heating element is arranged on the PCB and around the electronic component.

[0012] The disclosed system enables effective cooling of the electronic component when an apparatus comprising the electronic component operates in high ambient temperatures and effective heating when the apparatus operates in low ambient temperatures, while being cost-effective. Additionally, the disclosed system enables a fast cold start-up time for the electronic component during low ambient temperatures, which is advantageous and may save energy.

[0013] The disclosed system enables an improved apparatus for wireless communications networks and therefore enables improved wireless communications networks.

[0014] In some embodiments, the system comprises the electronic component and a substrate extending in a plane, where the electronic component is arranged on the substrate and the heat-conductive body is arranged in thermal contact with the electronic component.

[0015] In some embodiments, the system is configured such that the heat-conductive body and the heating element are separated from the substrate. In this way, space is formed around the electronic component, which enables the presence of bulky components, such as capacitors, to be present on the substrate around the electronic component. In addition, such a configuration may enable low interference from the heating element to the electronic signals of the substrate. The heat sink may also be separated from the substrate.

[0016] In some embodiments, the heating element is arranged separated from the heat sink. In this way, less amount of heat may propagate into the heat sink compared to if the heating element is in direct thermal contact with the heat sink. Additionally, the heating element may be arranged not to be in direct thermal contact with the heat sink.

[0017] In some embodiments, the heating element is arranged separated from the electronic component. In this way, the full surface of a thermal interface of the electronic component may be in direct thermal contact with the heat-conductive body, which enables improved combined cooling and heating of the electronic component.

[0018] In some embodiments, the heat-conductive body extends parallel to the plane.

[0019] In some embodiments, the heating element extends parallel to the plane.

[0020] In some embodiments, the heating element is positioned between the heat sink and the heat-conductive body. In this way, space is formed around the electronic component, which an advantage. Alternatively, the heating element may be positioned between the heat-conductive body and the electronic component, which may be preferable in some apparatuses.

[0021] In some embodiments, the heat sink comprises a protrusion arranged in thermal contact with the heat-conductive body. In that case, the heating element may be arranged at least partly surrounding the protrusion when the heating element is positioned between the heat sink and the heat-conductive body. Furthermore, the protrusion may be arranged facing the electronic component with the heat-conductive body arranged in-between. This provides a space-efficient system with good cooling and heating performance of the electronic component.

[0022] In some embodiments, the heat-conductive body and the heating element are respective planar structures. In that case, the heat-conductive body, the heating element, the electronic component, and the substrate may form a stacked layered structure.

[0023] In some embodiments, the heat-conductive body has a thermal conductivity coefficient of at least 150 Watts per meter-Kelvin, and more preferably at least 400 Watts per meter-Kelvin. In this way, the thermal resistance from heating element to electronic component is relatively small, such that  the electronic component can be heated efficiently. Furthermore, good cooling and heating performance of electronic component is enabled. Other values of the thermal conductivity coefficient are also possible.

[0024] In some embodiments, the heat-conductive body comprises copper, aluminum, and / or one of more heat pipes, and / or a vapor chamber. Other materials / components are also possible. In some embodiments, the heating element comprises a silicon rubber pad with metal wires, a polyimide heating film, a ceramic heating plate, and / or a thermoelectric cooling module. Other materials / components are also possible.

[0025] In some embodiments, the heat-conductive body is arranged in direct contact with the heat sink or arranged with a thermal interface material between the heat-conductive body and the heat sink. This enables a low thermal resistance between the heat-conductive body and the heat sink. In some embodiments, the heating element is arranged in direct contact with the heat-conductive body or arranged with a thermal interface material between the heating element and the heat-conductive body. This enables a low thermal resistance between the heating element and the heat-conductive body.

[0026] In some embodiments, the heat-conductive body is arranged in direct contact with the electronic component or arranged with a thermal interface material between the heat-conductive body and the electronic component. This enables a low thermal resistance between the heat-conductive body and the electronic component.

[0027] In some embodiments, the heat-conductive body is arranged in thermal contact with a thermal interface of the electronic component. This provides a good cooling and heating performance of the electronic component.

[0028] There is also disclosed herein an apparatus for a wireless communications network, wherein the apparatus comprises the system according to the discussions above. The disclosed system provides an improved apparatus, which in turn enables an improved wireless communications network. In some embodiments, the apparatus is a router, a baseband unit, or a radio unit.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0037] As is also shown in Figure 1, a wireless device 121 is located within the cell 115. The wireless device 121 is configured to communicate within the wireless communications network 100 via the network node 110 over a radio link served by the network node 110. The wireless device 121 may transmit data over an air or radio interface to the network node 110 in uplink (UL) , transmissions 132 and the radio base station may transmit data over an air or radio interface to the wireless device 121 in downlink (DL) transmissions 131. The wireless device 121 may refer to any type of wireless devices or user equipment (UE) communicating with a network node and / or with another wireless device in a cellular, mobile or radio communication network. Examples of such wireless devices are mobile phones, cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) , smart phones, tablets, sensors equipped with a UE, laptop mounted equipment (LME) (e.g. universal serial bus, USB) , laptop embedded equipment (LEE) , machine type communication (MTC) devices, or machine to machine (M2M) device, customer premises equipment (CPE) , target device, device-to-device (D2D) wireless device, wireless device capable of machine to machine (M2M) communication. The present disclosure relates to a system for regulating temperature of an electronic component. The system may be seen as being part of a local heating solution for the electronic component. The electronic component may be a temperature-sensitive electronic component. The electronic component may be an integrated circuit. The integrated circuit may, e.g., comprise a processing unit, radio frequency integrate circuit, or an application-specific integrated circuit. The system may be comprised in an apparatus for a wireless communications network 100. Such an apparatus may, e.g., be a router 111, a baseband unit 112, or a radio unit 113 as presented in Figure 1. Other units forming or being a part of a network node 110 are also possible. The system may be comprised in other apparatuses than apparatus for a wireless communications network 100 as well. The electronic component is often a key component of the apparatus it is comprised in. The electronic component often has notable power consumption and therefore requires effective cooling at high operating and / or ambient temperatures. The apparatus comprising the electronic component should therefore provide an effective heat release path for the electronic component. The heat release path should present low thermal resistance, so that the heat generated by the electronic component can be dissipated rapidly. At the same time, the electronic component may not fully function of the die temperature of the electronic component is too low. Thus, a heating solution is required. The heating solution together with the means of providing the heat release path may be referred to as a system for regulating the temperature of the electronic component.

[0038] Figure 2 shows a schematic illustration of an example router 111 comprising a system 200 for regulating temperature of an electronic component 240. In particular, Figure 2 shows a section view of the router 111, in an assembled state, along a line that intersects the electronic component 240. Figures 3A-3C show different views of an example router 111 comprising a system 300 for regulating temperature of an electronic component 240. In particular, Figures 3A and 3C show respective exploded views the router 111, and Figure 3B shows a section view of the router 111, in an assembled state, along a line that intersects the electronic component 240. Although Figures 2, 3A-3C illustrate a router 111, the features of the system 200, 300 shown therein may be the same when the system 200, 300 is comprised in a baseband unit 112, a radio unit 113, another unit forming or being a part of a network node 110, or any other apparatus.

[0039] The router 111 of Figures 3A-3C is an outdoor apparatus, which is required to fulfill a wide range of ambient temperatures, namely, from -40℃ to 55℃. In general, however, the system 200, 300 may be adapted for other temperature ranges. In Figures 3A-3C, the electronic component 240 is an integrated circuit comprising switching circuitry and is temperature sensitive. This particular electronic component 240 does not fully function at die temperatures below 0℃. The maximum power consumption of this particular electronic component 240 is about 40 W. Thus, the apparatus, i.e., router 111 in this case, needs to provide an effective heat release path for the electronic component 240 for dissipating heat at high operating temperatures. However, the power consumption of the particular electronic component 240 is only about 13 W at start-up. This minimum power consumption is not sufficient to heat the electronic component 240 up to a normal operating temperature at low ambient temperatures (such as lower than -20℃) . The disclosed system 300 solves the low temperature start-up issue while maintaining good cooling performance when required. Thus, the system 300 enables the router to fully function at the wide range of ambient temperatures, i.e., from -40℃ to 55℃.

[0040] The system 200, 300 comprises a heat sink 210 for dissipating heat from the electronic component 240. The system 200, 300 further comprises a heat-conductive body 230 arranged in thermal contact with the heat sink 210. The heat-conductive body 230 is further configured to be arranged in thermal contact with the electronic component 240 such that heat generated by the electronic component 240 is transferred to the heat sink 210 via the heat-conductive body 230. In other words, when the system 200, 300 is assembled in an apparatus (such as the router 111) , the heat-conductive body 230 is arranged in thermal contact with the electronic component 240 such that heat generated by the electronic component 240 is transferred to the heat sink 210 via the heat-conductive body 230. The system 200, 300 also comprises a heating element 220 arranged in thermal contact with the heat-conductive body 230. The heating element 220 is configured to selectively generate heat to be transferred to the electronic component 240 via the heat-conductive  body 230. In particular, the heating element 220 is configured to selectively generate heat to be transferred to the electronic component 240 via the heat-conductive body 230 when the heat-conductive body 230 is arranged in thermal contact with the electronic component 240. In other words, when the system 200, 300 is assembled in an apparatus (such as the router 111) , the heating element 220 is configured to selectively generate heat to be transferred to the electronic component 240 via the heat-conductive body 230.

[0041] The heat sink 210 is a heat exchanger that transfers heat generated by the electronic component 240 to the ambient air (other fluid mediums, such as a liquid coolant, are also possible) , where it is dissipated away from the heat sink 210 and thereby allows regulation of the temperature of the electronic component 240.

[0042] The electronic component 240 may selectively be heated from the heating element 220, e.g., if the ambient and / or operating temperature of the electronic component 240 is below a threshold. In the disclosed system 200, 300, the heating element 220 is not positioned directly in the heat release path of the electronic component 240. Rather, the heating element 220 is thermally coupled with the heat release path of the component via the heat-conductive body 230 so that the heat generated by heating element 220 can reach the electronic component 240 in an efficient manner when the electronic component 240 requests heating, while the heating element 220 has no or little impact on the thermal resistance of the heat release path of the electronic component 240 (via the heat sink 210) when the electronic component 240 requires cooling. The system 200, 300 provides a heating element 220 which is thermally coupled with a heat release path designed for efficient cooling. The heat generated by the heating element 220 can be transferred to the electronic component 240 promptly along the heat dissipation path (in a reversed direction compared to when the heat release path provides cooling of the electronic component 240) when heating is requested (e.g., at low ambient temperatures) .

[0043] According to some embodiments, the system 200, 300 comprises the heat sink 210, the heat-conductive body 230, and the heating element 220, and is configured to be assembled with a substrate 250 provided with the electronic component 240 such that the heat-conductive body 230 is in thermal contact with the electronic component 240. The substrate 250 may, e.g., be part of a PCB or other type of circuit board.

[0044] In other embodiments, the system 200, 300 further comprises the electronic component 240 and the substrate 250, where the electronic component 240 is arranged on the substrate 250, and where the heat-conductive body 230 is arranged in thermal contact with the electronic component 240. In Figures 3A-3C, the heat sink 210 is a first heat sink (which may be called a first heat sink cover) and is part of a heat sink assembly. The heat sink assembly further comprises a second heat sink 360 (which may be called a second heat sink cover) and a hatch 370. The heat sink assembly is  configured to form a sealed space when assembled, which encloses the substrate 250 with the electronic component 240 inside. The second heat sink 360 may be arranged in thermal contact with the first heat sink 210. In general, however, the system 200, 300 disclosed herein may comprise any number of heatsinks.

[0045] The electronic component 240 and possibly other components on the substrate 250 generate heat during operation. The heat will be released to environment mainly through the heat sinks 210, 360. The router 111 is configured to provide an effective heat transfer path from all components generating heat to the heat sinks 210, 360. In particular, the heat-conductive body 230 is positioned between electronic component 240 and the heat sink 210. The heating element 220 is arranged in thermal contact with the heat-conductive body 230, the electronic component 240 is arranged in thermal contact with the heat-conductive body 230, and the heat-conductive body 230 is arranged in thermal contact with the heat sink 210. In particular, the heat-conductive body 230 may be arranged in direct contact (i.e., direct physical contact) with the heat sink 210 or arranged with a thermal interface material between the heat-conductive body 230 and the heat sink 210, the heating element 220 may be arranged in direct contact with the heat-conductive body 230 or arranged with a thermal interface material between the heating element 220 and the heat-conductive body 230, and the heat-conductive body 230 may be arranged in direct contact with the electronic component 240 or arranged with a thermal interface material between the heat-conductive body 230 and the electronic component 240. The thermal interface material may, e.g., be a thermal grease, thermal conductive adhesive, or phase change material film, filled between the contact surfaces. The thermal interface material may also be a thermal pad or thermal putty. Other thermal interface materials are also possible.

[0046] The electronic component 240 may be designed with a thermal interface, which is surface for the heat release path for the electronic component 240. In that case, the heat-conductive body 230 may be arranged in thermal contact with the thermal interface of the electronic component 240. Thus, the system 200, 300 enables an improved heat transfer from the heating element 220 to the electronic component 240 compared to other solutions where the electronic component is heated by a heating element via other parts than the thermal interface of the electronic component.

[0047] The system 200, 300 provides a heat release path for the electronic component 240. The heat release path goes from the electronic component 240 to the heat-conductive body 230, thereafter to the heat sink 210, and thereafter to environment via fins 211. The heating element 220 is not positioned in this heat release path. Thus, the heating element 220 will not (or at least only have a little) impact on the performance of the heat release of the electronic component 240.

[0048] When the electronic component 240 requires heating (e.g., at low operating temperatures) , the heating element 220 will start its operation and generate heat. The heat from the heating element  220 is conducted to the heat-conductive body 230 first and is then conducted to the electronic component 240 via the thermal interface of the electronic component 240, which will warm up the electronic component 240.

[0049] The heat-conductive body 230 and / or the heat sink 210 may have a thermal conductivity coefficient of at least 150 Watts per meter-Kelvin, and more preferably at least 400 Watts per meter-Kelvin. The thermal conductivity coefficient may represent the lowest value in any direction of the heat-conductive body 230. The heat-conductive body 230 and / or the heat sink 210 may, e.g., comprise copper, aluminum, and / or one of more heat pipes, and / or a vapor chamber.

[0050] The heating element 220 may, e.g., comprise a silicon rubber pad with metal wires, a polyimide heating film, a ceramic heating plate, and / or a thermoelectric cooling module. Other materials / technologies are also possible.

[0051] As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3A-3C, the heating element 220 may be positioned between the heat sink 210 and the heat-conductive body 230. Advantageously, this arrangement allows a space to be formed around the electronic component 240, which enables the presence of bulky components, such as capacitors, to be present on the substrate 250 around the electronic component 240. In addition, such a configuration may enable low interference from the heating element 220 to the electronic signals of the substrate 250. Alternatively, the heating element 220 may be positioned between the heat-conductive body 230 and the electronic component 240. In general, the heating element 220 is arranged to attach to the heat-conductive body 230 on a peripheral area (either on the top surface or the bottom surface) outside of the contact areas with electronic component 240 and with heat sink 210. The heating element 220 may be attached to the heat-conductive body 230 with a glue (which may also act as a thermal interface material) . Additionally, or alternatively, there may be mechanical measures (not shown in the figures) to attach the heating element 220 to the heat-conductive body 230. For example, it is possible to include a plate to mount with the heat-conductive body 230 and sandwich the heating element 220 between said plate and the heat-conductive body 230. Other examples of mechanical measures are screws or bolts.

[0052] As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3A-3C, the heat sink 210 may comprise a protrusion 212 arranged in thermal contact with the heat-conductive body 230. Other ways of how the heat sink 210 is arranged in thermal contact with the heat-conductive body 230 are also possible. Furthermore, as can be seen in Figures 2 and 3A-3C, the protrusion 212 may be arranged facing the electronic component 240 with the heat-conductive body 230 arranged in-between. In other words, the protrusion 212 extends in an extension direction that intersects with the electronic component 240. In this way, heat generated by the electronic component 240 may be transferred effectively to the heat sink 210. Other arrangements of the protrusion 212 are also possible.

[0053] As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3A-3C, the heating element 220 may be arranged surrounding the protrusion 212. In Figures 3A and 3C, a cut-out 322 can be seen on the heating element 220. The cut-out 322 is a through hole through which the protrusion 212 extends when the system 200, 300 is assembled. The cut-out 322 is at an area of the heating element 220 that allows the protrusion 212 to be facing the electronic component 240 with the heat-conductive body 230 arranged in-between. In general, when the heating element 220 is positioned between the heat sink 210 and the heat-conductive body 230, the heating element 220 may be arranged at least partly surrounding the protrusion 212. In this way, a large portion of the heating element 220 is arranged in close proximity to the electronic component 240, which is advantageous.

[0054] In Figures 3A and 3C, it can be seen that the heating element 220 may comprise a cable arrangement 321 arranged in electrical connection with the substrate 250 to receive electric power. Thus, the heating element 220 is electrically connected with the substrate 250 (which may be a PCB assembly) through cable arrangement 321 to receive electricity. There may be one or more temperature sensors on the substrate 250 and / or inside the electronic component 240. The router 111 may switch on or off the power supply to heating element 220 according to a reading of the temperature sensor (s) . There may also be an electric circuit (not shown) arranged on the substrate 250 that can adjust the voltage or current of the supplied power to the heating element 220. Thus, the router 111 may control the power supply to the heating element 220 according to reading of the temperature sensor (s) .

[0055] As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3A-3C, the system 200, 300 may be configured such that the heat-conductive body 230 and the heating element 220 are separated from the substrate 250. In other words, none of the heat-conductive body 230 and the heating element 220 are in direct physical contact with the substrate 250. In this way, space is formed around the electronic component 240, which enables the presence of bulky components, such as capacitors, to be present on the substrate 250 around the electronic component 240. In addition, such a configuration may enable low interference from the heating element 220 to the electronic signals of the substrate. The heat sink 210 may also be separated from substrate 250. In general, however, other configurations are also possible for the heat sink 210, the heat-conductive body 230, and the heating element 220 relative to the substrate 250. Furthermore, the heating element 220 may be arranged separated from the heat sink 210. In this way, a less amount of heat may propagate into the heat sink 210 compared to if the heating element 220 is in direct thermal contact with the heat sink 210. Preferably, the heating element 220 may be arranged not to be in direct thermal contact with the heat sink 210 (e.g., not in direct physical contact) . In general, however, other configurations are also possible for the heating element 220 relative to the heat sink 210. Additionally, the heating element 220 may be arranged separated from the electronic component 240. In this way, the full surface of a  thermal interface of the electronic component 240 may be in direct thermal contact with the heat-conductive body 230, which enables improved combined cooling and heating of the electronic component 240. Preferably, the heating element 220 may be arranged not to be in direct thermal contact with the electronic component 240 (e.g., not in direct physical contact) . In general, however, other configurations are also possible for the heating element 220 relative to the electronic component 240.

[0056] As can be seen in Figures 2, 3A-3C, the substrate 250 may extend in a plane (x-y in the figures) . Furthermore, the heat-conductive body 230 may extend parallel to the plane (x-y) and the heating element 220 may extend parallel to the plane (x-y) when the router 111 is assembled (as is shown in Figure 3) . In Figure 3C, it can be seen that the heat sink 210 comprises an inner surface adjacent to the protrusion 212 that also extends parallel to the plane (x-y) when the router 111 is assembled (as is shown in Figure 3) . Other shapes of the substrate 250, the heat-conductive body 230, and the heating element 220 are also possible.

[0057] As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3A-3C, the heat-conductive body 230 and the heating element 220 may be respective planar structures. Furthermore, the heat-conductive body 230, the heating element 220, the electronic component 240, and the substrate 250 may form a stacked layered structure. A stacked layered structure is a structure comprising a plurality of planar structures referred to as layers. Each planar structure has two sides, or faces, and is associated with a thickness. The thickness is much smaller than the dimension of the faces, i.e., the layer is a flat or approximately planar element. In some embodiments, a layer is rectangular or square. However, more general shapes are also applicable, including circular or elliptical disc shapes. The stacked layered structure is stacked in the sense that layers are arranged on top of each other. In other words, the layered structure can be seen as a sandwich structure.

[0058] In the example router 111 of Figures 3A-3C, the protrusion 212 of the heat sink 210 is 40x40x4 mm.The air gap between the inner surface of the heat sink 210 (i.e., the surface adjacent to the protrusion 212) and the heating element 220 is about 5 mm when the router 111 is assembled. There is a 40x40x2 mm thermal pad between the protrusion 212 and the heat-conductive body 230. The heating element 220 is 150x150x1 mm with a 67x23 mm cut in the outline and with a 59x59 mm cut in the center (i.e., the cut-out 322) . The heat-conductive body 230 is 150x150 mm with 67x23 mm cut in the outline. The electronic component 240 is 40x40x3.8 mm. The air gap between the substrate 250 and the surface of the heat-conductive body 230 facing the substrate 250 is about 3.8 mm when the router 111 is assembled (note that there is relatively slim phase change material film between the electronic component 240 and the heat-conductive body 230) . In general, other dimensions are possible.

[0059] The size (i.e., area) of the heating element 220 may be selected based on a desired total power output and the maximum power output density (i.e., power per area) of the particular heating element type. In the example of Figures 3A-3C, the heating element 220 can provide a maximum of power output of 80 W and is a silicon rubber pad with heating wires (i.e., metal wires embedded in a silicon rubber pad) .

[0060] The description of the example embodiments provided herein have been presented for purposes of illustration. The description is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit example embodiments to the precise form disclosed, and modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teachings or may be acquired from practice of various alternatives to the provided embodiments. The examples discussed herein were chosen and described to explain the principles and the nature of various example embodiments and its practical application to enable one skilled in the art to utilize the example embodiments in various manners and with various modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated. It should be appreciated that the example embodiments presented herein may be practiced in any combination with each other.

[0061] It should be noted that the word “comprising” does not necessarily exclude the presence of other elements or steps than those listed and the words “a” or “an” preceding an element do not exclude the presence of a plurality of such elements. It should further be noted that any reference signs do not limit the scope of the claims, that the example embodiments may be implemented at least in part by means of both hardware and software, and that several “means” , “units” or “devices” may be represented by the same item of hardware.

[0062] The embodiments herein are not limited to the above-described preferred embodiments. Various alternatives, modifications and equivalents may be used. Therefore, the above embodiments should not be construed as limiting.
