Abstract
Description
Attorney Docket No. SP24-107PCTGLASS ARTICLE WITH COMPOSITION TO REDUCE TRANSMISSION OF ULTRAVIOLET ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION WITH REDUCED DENSITY AND HIGHER LIQUIDUS VISCOSITY, LAMINATE INCLUDING THE SAME, AND PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULE INCLUDING SAMECROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority under 35 U.S.C. § 119 of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 684,077 filed August 16, 2024, the content of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD
[0002] This disclosure pertains to glass articles with compositions that exhibit a reduction in transmission of ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation while exhibiting lower density and higher liquidus viscosity, as well as applications of the glass article including laminates and photovoltaic modules.BACKGROUND
[0003] Artificial satellites (hereinafter just “satellites”) are sent to orbit the Earth for a variety of reasons. Some of the satellites include transmission and / or reception, sensing, temperature control, and propulsion capabilities. Such capabilities require electrical power. While some satellites generate electrical power through nuclear means (e.g., radioisotope thermoelectric generators), other satellites include solar panels that generate electrical power through the photovoltaic effect, transforming electromagnetic radiation from the Sun into electrical current.
[0004] However, there is a problem in that electromagnetic radiation from the Sun degrades the ability of the solar panels to convert usable electromagnetic radiation from the Sun into electrical power, thus lowering the efficiency of the solar panel. While that is also the case for ground based solar panels, the degradation in orbit is much more prominent, because the Earth’s atmosphere filters much of the electromagnetic radiation that would otherwise degrade efficiency before the electromagnetic radiation reaches the solar panel. The electromagnetic radiation from the Sun degrades the efficiency of the solar panel in a variety of manners, including damaging the photovoltaic cells and altering transmissivity (e.g., darkening) of the cover substrate through which usable electromagnetic radiation is supposed to transmit before encountering the photovoltaic cells. If the efficiency is sufficiently degraded, the satellite then is typically returned to Earth. A degradation of thirty percent per year in efficiency is not uncommon.Attorney Docket No. SP24-107PCT
[0005] There is a second problem in that the cost to move the satellite from Earth into orbit increases as weight of the satellite increases. Thus, reducing the weight of the satellite is a goal. Reducing the weight of the solar panel would reduce the weight of the satellite and, thus, work toward that goal. The cover glass of the solar panel is typically one of the heaviest components.
[0006] Not just in space, Earth based solar panels pose similar problems as well. Although the Earth’s atmosphere prevents much electromagnetic radiation from the Sun that would degrade photovoltaic cells from reaching Earth based solar panels, some such electromagnetic radiation still reaches the solar panels and degrades efficiency over time. Further, weight of solar panels is a problem due to resource usage, shipping, and associated costs.
[0007] There is a third problem in that some glass compositions formulated to reduce the transmission of ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation therethrough have a liquidus viscosity that is too low (e.g., is too runny) to permit fusion formation of a glass article from the glass composition.SUMMARY

The composition can be substantially free, or free, of CaO.
[0108] Zinc oxide, ZnO, can be present as a glass former and / or a modifier in the composition. In particular, the presence of ZnO in the composition can absorb ultraviolet radiation and thus lower transmittance of ultraviolet radiation though the glass article 10. The composition, as mentioned, can include from 0 to 1.20 ZnO. For example, the composition can include a mole percentage of ZnO of 0, greater than 0, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40, 0.50, 0.60, 0.70, 0.80, 0.90, 1.00, 1.10, 1.20, or within any range bound by any two of those values (e.g., from 0 to 1.20, from 0.50 to 0.80, and so on). [0112] Referring now to FIGS. 2-3, a laminate 100 includes a first glass layer 102 and a second glass layer 104. The second glass layer 104 is laminated to the first glass layer 102.
[0113] The first glass layer 102 is or includes the glass article 10 of the present disclosure. The glass article 10 forming a component or an entirety of the first glass layer 102 can have any composition falling within the first set of embodiments, the second set of embodiments, the third set of embodiments, or the fourth set of embodiments described herein. The first glass layer 102 thus reduces the transmission of ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation through the laminate 100.
[0114] The first glass layer 102 includes an outward primary surface 106 and an inward primary surface 108. The outward primary surface 106 and the inward primary surface 108 face away from each other. The first primary 12 and the second primary surface 14 of the glass article 10 can provide the outward primary surface 106 and the inward primary surface 108, respectively, of the first glass layer 102. Similarly, the second glass layer 104 includes an outward primary surface 110 and an inward primary surface 112. Again, the outward primary surface 110 and the inward primary surface 112 face away from each other. The inward primary surface 108 of the first glass layer 102 and the inward primary surface 112 of the second glass layer 104 face each other. The outward primary surface 106 and the inward primary surface 108 of the first glass layer 102, and the outward primary surface 110 and the inward primary surface 112 of the second glass layer 104, can all be planar and parallel to each other but need not be. The laminate 100 has a first primary surface 114 provided by the outward primary surface 106 of the first glass layer 102 and a second primary surface 116 provided by the outward primary surface 110 of the second glass layer 104.Attorney Docket No. SP24-107PCT
[0115] The first glass layer 102 has a thickness 118. The thickness 118 is the shortest straight-line distance between the inward primary surface 108 and the outward primary surface 106. Similarly, the second glass layer 104 has a thickness 120. The thickness 120 is the shortest straight-line distance between the inward primary surface 112 and the outward primary surface 110.
[0116] In embodiments, the thickness 118 of the first glass layer 102 is less than 250 pm. For example, the thickness 118 of the first glass layer 102 can be 20 pm, 30 pm, 40 pm, 50 pm, 60 pm, 70 pm, 80 pm, 90 pm, 100 pm, 100 pm, 120 pm, 130 pm, 140 pm, 150 pm, 160 pm, 170 pm, 180 pm, 190 pm, 200 pm, 210 pm, 220 pm, 230 pm, 250 pm, or within any range bound by any two of those values (e.g., from 40 pm to 60 pm, from 100 pm to 200 pm, and so on).
[0117] In embodiments, thickness 120 of the second glass layer 104 is greater than the thickness 118 of the first glass layer 102. For example, the thickness 120 of the second glass layer 104 can be 1.0 mm, 1.1 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.3 mm, 1.4 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.6 mm, 1.7 mm,1.8 mm, 1.9 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.1 mm, 2.2 mm, 2.3 mm, 2.4 mm, 2.5 mm, 2.6 mm, 2.7 mm, 2.8 mm, 2.9 mm, 3.0 mm, 3.1 mm, 3.2 mm, 3.3 mm, 3.4 mm, 3.5 mm, 3.6 mm, 3.7 mm, 3.8 mm,3.9 mm, 4.0 mm, 4.1 mm, 4.2 mm, 4.3 mm, 4.4 mm, 4.5 mm, 4.6 mm, 4.7 mm, 4.8 mm, 4.9 mm, 5.0 mm, or within any range bound by any two of those values (e.g., from 1.8 mm to 4.5 mm, from 3.0 mm to 3.2 mm, and so on). The thickness 120 of the second glass layer 104 can be greater than 5.0 mm as well.
[0118] In embodiments, the laminate 100 further includes an interlayer 122. The interlayer 122 is disposed between the first glass layer 102 and the second glass layer 104. The interlayer 122 can contact the inward primary surface 108 of the first glass layer 102 and the inward primary surface 112 of the second glass layer 104. The interlayer 122 includes a thickness 124. The thickness 124 of the interlayer 122 is the shortest straight-line distance orthogonal to the inward primary surface 108 of the first glass layer 102. In embodiments, the thickness 124 of the interlayer 122 is within a range of from 0.30 pm to 1.00 pm. For example, the thickness 124 of the interlayer 122 can be 0.30 pm, 0.35 pm, 0.40 pm, 0.45 pm, 0.50 pm, 0.55 pm, 0.60 pm, 0.65 pm, 0.70 pm, 0.75 pm, 0.80 pm, 0.85 pm, 0.90 pm, 0.95 pm, 1.00 pm, or within any range bound by any two of those values (e.g., from 0.50 pm to 0.70 pm, from 0.55 pm to 0.95 pm, and so on).Attorney Docket No. SP24-107PCTPhotovoltaic Module
[0119] Referring now to FIGS. 4-7, a photovoltaic module 200 includes one or more photovoltaic cells 202 and the glass article 10 of the present disclosure. The glass article 10 that is a component of the photovoltaic module 200 can have any composition falling within the first set of embodiments, the second set of embodiments, the third set of embodiments, or the fourth set of embodiments described herein.
[0120] The glass article 10 is disposed between the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 and an external environment 204. In particular, the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 is disposed beneath an inward primary surface 205 of the glass article 10, such as that provided by the second primary surface 14 thereof. The glass article 10 separates the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 from the external environment 204. The glass article 10 thus reduces transmission of ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation from the external environment 204, through the glass article 10, and to the one or more photovoltaic cells 202. It should be understood that the glass article 10 can be a layer of the laminate 100 and the laminate 100 can be disposed between the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 and the external environment 204.
[0121] During use of the photovoltaic module 200, photons 206 from the Sun 208 enter the photovoltaic module 200 through the glass article 10 and impinge upon the one or more photovoltaic cells 202. The type of photovoltaic cells 202 is not particularly limited, though in preferred embodiments, the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 include monocrystalline silicon.
[0122] In embodiments, the photovoltaic module 200 further includes a backsheet 210. The one or more photovoltaic cells 202 is disposed between the glass article 10 and the backsheet 210. The backsheet 210 can have a glass composition and, indeed, can also be the glass article 10 of the present disclosure (with any of the compositions of the first set of embodiments, the second set of embodiments, the third set of embodiments, or the fourth set of embodiments). Stated another way, the glass article 10 of the present disclosure can be the glass article 10 of the photovoltaic module 200 and another glass article 10 of the present disclosure can be the backsheet 210 of the photovoltaic module 200.
[0123] Having the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 sandwiched between the glass article 10 and the backsheet 210 with transparency allows the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 to receive photons 206 transmitting through both the glass article 10 and the backsheet 210. That arrangement in theory should increase the electricity production of the photovoltaicAttorney Docket No. SP24-107PCT module 200 compared to if the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 received photons 206 transmitting only through the glass article 10 but not the backsheet 210.
[0124] In embodiments, the photovoltaic module 200 further includes an encapsulant 212 that at least partially encapsulates the one or more photovoltaic cells 202. The encapsulant 212 at least partially encapsulates the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 between the glass article 10 and the backsheet 210. The glass article 10 and the backsheet 210 thus separate the one or more photovoltaic cells 202 and the encapsulant 212 from the external environment 204. The encapsulant 212 has a composition, e.g., material that forms the encapsulant 212. In embodiments, the composition of the encapsulant 212 is one or more of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), polyvinyl butyral (PVB), a silicone-based material (e.g., SYLGARD™ 184), an ionomer (e.g., DUPONT's® PV5400, PV5300, PV5200, or PV8600), a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) (e.g., Quentys™ BPO from Borealis), and a polyolefin elastomer (POE) (e.g., Engage™ from Dow). Other compositions for the encapsulant 212 are envisioned.
[0125] In embodiments, the photovoltaic module 200 further includes a frame 214. When the photovoltaic module 200 is oriented horizontally such that an outward primary surface 215 of the glass article 10 (e.g., the first primary surface 12) is horizontal and facing upwards, the frame 214 defines a top 216 and a bottom 218 of the photovoltaic module 200 where the top 216 is the most elevated portion of the photovoltaic module 200 and the bottom 218 is the least elevated portion of the photovoltaic module 200, excluding wiring that may extend from the photovoltaic module 200. In a more detailed example, the frame 214 includes a sidewall 220, a C-channel 222 that is contiguous with the sidewall 220, and a tab 224 that extends inward relative to the sidewall 220. The C-channel 222 is disposed at or near the top 216 of the frame 214, and the tab 224 is disposed at or near the bottom 218 of the frame 214. The tab 224 forms a plane 226 that is generally parallel to an outward primary surface 228 of the backsheet 210. The glass article 10, the one or more photovoltaic cells 202, and the backsheet 210 are all coupled to each other as a package 230. The sidewall 220 extends around a perimeter 232 of the package 230 with the perimeter 232 of the package 230 secured within the C-channel 222 of the frame 214.
[0126] The glass article 10 of the present disclosure addresses the problems set forth in the Background, among other problems, in a variety of ways. First, the glass article 10 prevents a significant percentage of ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation from transmitting through the glass article 10. Thus, when utilized as a cover glass over one or more photovoltaic cells 202, the glass article 10 slows solarization and other degradation of theAttorney Docket No. SP24-107PCT encapsulant 212 and the one or more or more photovoltaic cells 202. Second, the glass article 10 exhibits decreased density compared to previous efforts. Thus, the glass article 10 has reduced weight and a photovoltaic module 200 incorporating the glass article 10 has reduced weight as well, making transporting the photovoltaic module 200 to orbit easier and less costly. Third, the compositions of the glass article 10 can have a liquidus viscosity that is sufficiently high to permit fusions formation of the glass article 10 therefrom. Being able to fusion form the glass article 10 allows for a potentially stronger glass article 10 with more pristine surfaces than the if the glass article 10 were formed via another process such as roller formation.Examples
[0127] Comparative Examples 1-20 - Comparative Examples 1-20 are glass compositions recited in International Patent Application Publication W02023022074A1. The mass percentages recited in the publication are converted to mole percentages and reported in Table 1 below. The publication reports densities and liquidus viscosities for each composition. The liquidus viscosities have been converted from log q to kP below.Attorney Docket No. SP24-107PCTAttorney Docket No. SP24-107PCT
[0128] The density values reported for Comparative Examples 1-20 range from 2.45 g / cm3to 2.57 g / cm3.
[0129] The liquidus viscosity values reported for Comparative Examples 1-20 range from 8 kP to 1000 kP. However, the compositions of Comparative Examples 1-3 and 7 providing the higher liquidus viscosity values of 631 kP, 251 kP, 1000 kP, and 501 kP, respectively, all lack CeCE. Similarly, the composition of Comparative Example 11 providing the liquidus viscosity value of 155 kP likewise lacks CeCE. The highest liquidus viscosity value reported for a composition that included CeCE was 275 kP for Comparative Example 14.
[0130] Examples 1-56 - For Examples 1-56, glass articles including the composition of the present disclosure were formed, analyzed to determine the mole percentages of the various constituents, and then tested to determine density and / or liquidus viscosity that each glass article exhibits. The results are set forth in Table 2 below.Attorney Docket No. SP24-107PCTAttorney Docket No. SP24-107PCTAttorney Docket No. SP24-107PCTAttorney Docket No. SP24-107PCT
[0131] Review of Table 2 reveals that the densities of many of Examples 1-56 are less than the minimum of 2.45 g / cm3from Comparative Examples 1-20. For instance, Example 1 (2.434 g / cm3), Example 4 (2.441 g / cm3), Example 20 (2.437 g / cm3), Example 22 (2.440 g / cm3), Example 28 (2.442 g / cm3), Example 29 (2.416 g / cm3), Example 30 (2.423 g / cm3), Example 31 (2.421 g / cm3), Example 32 (2.426 g / cm3), Example 33 (2.433 g / cm3), Example 37 (2.442 g / cm3), Example 38 (2.429 g / cm3), Example 39 (2.437 g / cm3), Example 40 (2.443 g / cm3), Example 54 (2.442 g / cm3), Example 55 (2.416 g / cm3), and Example 56 (2.423 g / cm3) all have a density that is less than 2.45 g / cm3. For space-based applications, such as photovoltaic modules on satellites, even seemingly small reductions in density are desired. The glass article used as a cover glass over photovoltaic cells is one of the heaviest components of such satellites. In addition, achieving a density of less than 2.45 g / cm3can be difficult when the composition includes more than a trivial mole percentage of CeCE, which has a molar mass of 172.114 g / mol. The Comparative Examples illustrate this with density generally increasing with increasing mole percentage of CeCh. However, Example 1 included 0.5 mol% CeO2 yet exhibited a density of 2.434 g / cm3. Example 20 (0.49 mol% CeCE, 2.437 g / cm3), Example 22 (0.5 mol% CeCE, 2.440 g / cm3), Example 28 (0.25 mol% CeCE, 2.416 g / cm3), Example 29 (0.25 mol% CeCE, 2.416 g / cm3), Example 30 (0.25 CeCE, 2.423 g / cm3), Example 54 (0.24 mol% CeCE, 2.442 g / cm3), Example 55 (0.24 mol% CeCE,Attorney Docket No. SP24-107PCT 2.416 g / cm3), and Example 56 (0.24 mol% CeO2, 2.423 g / cm3) are additional compositions that include a significant mole percentage of CeO2yet exhibited a density of less than 2.45 g / cm3.
[0132] Aside from density, comparison of Table 1 with Table 2 reveals information about liquidus viscosities for compositions that include CeO2. Of the Comparative Examples, Comparative Example 14 included 0.18 mole percent CeO2and exhibited a liquidus viscosity of 275 kP. In contrast, Example 10 (0.51 mol% CeO2, 348 kP), Example 13 (0.49 mol% CeO2, 615 kP), Example 16 (0.50 mol% CeO2, 579 kP), Example 19 (0.49 mol% CeO2, 327 kP), Example 20 (0.49 mol% CeO2, 589 kP), Example 21 (0.49 mol% CeO2, 473 kP), Example 22 (0.50 mol% CeO2, 381 kP), Example 23 (0.49 mol% CeO2, 420 kP), Example 24 (0.49 mol% CeO2, 290 kP), Example 28 (0.25 mol% CeO2, 384 kP), Example 29 (0.25 mol% CeO2, 1103 kP), Example 30 (0.25 mol% CeO2, 571 kP), Example 34 (0.49 mol% CeO2, 395 kP), Example 35 (0.49 mol% CeO2, 348 kP), Example 36 (0.50 mol% CeO2, 326 kP), Example 37 (0.25 mol% CeO2, 504 kP), Example 44 (0.50 mol% CeO2, 282 kP), Example 45 (0.30 mol% CeO2, 429 kP), Example 46 (0.50 mol% CeO2, 598 kP), Example 47 (0.20 mol% CeO2, 385 kP), Example 48 (0.40 mol% CeO2, 280 kP), Example 49 (0.10 mol% CeO2, 311 kP), Example 50 (0.20 mol% CeO2, 478 kP), Example 54 (0.24 mol% CeO2, 384 kP), Example 55 (0.24 mol% CeO2, 1103 kP), and Example 56 (0.24 mol% CeO2, 571 kP) all exhibited a greater liquidus viscosity while including CeO2.
[0133] Further, the Examples exhibit significant reduction in transmission of ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation. That property is exhibited by the 50% cutoff wavelength generally within a range of from 295 nm to 345 nm. For the glass articles of Examples 13-15, 25, and 29, each having a thickness of 50 pm, the transmission percentage therethrough as a function of wavelength was determined. The results are reproduced in graphical form at FIG. 8. All of those compositions include 2.0 mole percent TiO2and different mole percentages of CeO2. The results reveal that incorporating both cerium and titanium together can fully or partially block transmission of electromagnetic radiation throughout a range of ultraviolet wavelengths. Titanium primarily absorbs at within the wavelength range of from 290 nm to 300 nm, while cerium exists in silicate glasses in two different valence states, Ce4+and Ce3+, inducing absorption in the ultraviolet wavelength region with respectively a wide peak of absorption centered at about 240 nm and a narrow asymmetrical peak of absorption through the range of from 300 nm to 320 nm. At small substrate thicknesses (e.g., 50 pm), the combination of both titanium and cerium can beAttorney Docket No. SP24-107PCT beneficial to minimize transmission of electromagnetic radiation within the ultraviolet wavelength range of from about 260 nm to 320 nm.
