Description

Laser Leveling DeviceTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The application relates to a laser leveling device.BACKGROUND

[0002] Laser leveling devices are widely used in various fields such as construction, renovation and decoration, to generate laser beams in vertical and / or horizontal planes to inspect levelness and / or verticality of a target surface.

[0003] A laser leveling device comprises a housing assembly with a switch, a bracket assembly inside the housing assembly, and a pendulum that can swing inside the bracket assembly. During the use of the laser leveling device, the pendulum swings freely before stabilizing in its vertical or suspended position. Then a laser source supported by the pendulum emits lights to identify the levelness and / or verticality. The laser leveling device comprises a locking device configured to lock the pendulum in place when not in operation, to prevent the pendulum from freely shaking inside the bracket assembly and possibly hitting other components.

[0004] Currently, the locking device of the laser leveling device comprises a large number of components and thus has a complex structure, resulting in high costs in materials, manufacturing, processing, and assembling. The complex structure causes transmission of motion between the components very complicated and thus results in a low efficiency of motion transmission.

[0005] For example, in an existing configuration, the locking device comprises at least: two locking arms configured to rotate around an axis extending in a vertical direction to clasp and release the pendulum, and at least one transmission component configured to transmit an external input applied by an operator to the switch of the laser leveling device to switch the laser leveling device from one of its OFF state and its ON state to the other to the two locking arms, the at least one transmission component typically comprising two transmission components that are teeth-engaged with each other. The transmission component is engaged with the two locking arms, converting a rotational motion in a vertical plane to a rotational motion in a horizontal plane.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0006] An object of the present application is to provide a novel pendulum locking device.

[0007] A laser leveling device according to the present application comprises the novel pendulum locking device. The locking device comprises a locking arm attached to a bracket assembly (in particular a left bracket of the bracket assembly) and selectively engaged with a pendulum. The locking device can comprise only one unitary locking arm. The locking arm is configured to pivot relative to the bracket assembly from one of a locking position corresponding to an OFF state and a releasing position corresponding to an ON state to the other in response to receiving an external input to switch the laser leveling device from one of the OFF state and the ON state to the other. In the locking position, the locking arm pushes the pendulum rearwards to and fixes it in an inclined position which is offset from a suspended or vertical position, and clamps  the pendulum between the locking arm and a corresponding structure of the bracket assembly. In the OFF state of the laser leveling device, especially during storage and transportation, the pendulum is locked in the inclined position (rearwards) offset from the suspended position, and thus sensitive or fragile components near or at an opposite side (front side) of the laser leveling device, in particular a cylindrical lens of a laser source at the front side, have an increased distance from a front window of a housing assembly of the laser leveling device. This reduces the possibility of damage to these components at the front side due to vibration and impact and thus provides for an improved fall protection effect in cases the laser leveling device falls with the front side facing downwards.

[0008] The laser leveling device with the locking device of the present application tolerates an increased amount of deformation of the locking arm when falling to impact with the front side facing downwards, and achieves a greatly reduced G-force value on the pendulum, and provides an excellent buffering performance for the pendulum.

[0009] Further, the application provides for a laser leveling device with a pendulum locking device having a greatly simplified structure. The locking device switches between a locking state in which a pendulum is locked and a releasing state in which the pendulum is released simply by providing a locking arm configured to: move, such as pivot (in particular, around a pivot axis extending in a direction perpendicular to a vertical direction, such as in a left-right direction) , between the locking position and the releasing position, upon receiving an external input. Compared to the existing structure in which the locking device of the laser leveling device comprises two locking arms and at least one transmission component, the locking device in this application is significantly simplified regarding its structure and motion transmission of its locking arm. By reducing structural components and simplifying motion transmission, costs related with material, processing, assembly etc. are reduced accordingly. It is noted that, although a safety lock of the locking device will be described as also transmitting the external input to the locking arm, it does not have to provide for the function of a transmission component. In some embodiments, the locking arm can be configured to directly receive any external input, while the safety lock may only provide for the function of preventing the locking arm from accidentally pivoting from the locking position to the releasing position.

[0010] Still further, the application provides for a novel locking device for securely locking the locking arm in the locking position. The locking device can only include one safety lock component and one locking arm component. The safety lock of the locking device and a bracket assembly of the laser leveling device each comprise interference features that cooperate with each other. These interference features are configured to prevent the locking arm from moving from the locking position to the releasing position through an interference engagement without the external input of switching the laser leveling device from the OFF state to the ON state. Only the external input of switching from the OFF state to the ON state can cause the safety lock to move off from the interference engagement with the bracket assembly relative to the locking arm, so that the locking arm is permitted to move from the locking position to the releasing position. This arrangement of the locking device ensures that the locking arm of the laser leveling device in this application will not accidentally move from the locking position to the releasing position without the external input. Optionally, the safety lock can also provide for some resistance during the movement of the locking arm from the releasing position to the  locking position. In this sense, without the external input applied to the laser leveling device to switch it from the ON state to the OFF state, the safety lock facilitates or helps to prevent or block the locking arm from accidentally moving from the releasing position towards the locking position.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0011] The above and other features, advantages and aspects of the present application will be well understood in the detailed description below with reference to the accompanying drawings. It should be noted that the accompanying drawings only show some feasible embodiments that can implement the present application, not all embodiments.

[0019] In order to better understand the present application for the skilled in the art, a laser leveling device of the present application will be described clearly and thoroughly with reference to the accompanying drawings. The terms used in the following description are for descriptive purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of the present application.

[0020] Referring to Figures 1-6, a laser leveling device of the present application may comprise a left bracket (also referred to as a "first bracket" in the description) 100a and a right bracket (also referred to as a "second bracket" in the description) 100b arranged opposite to each other in a first direction A, which are connected together to form a bracket assembly and define an interior. In the illustrated embodiment, the left bracket 100a and the right bracket 100b can be connected together with four connectors 100c, such as bolts.

[0021] In the description, the laser leveling device will be described with reference to three directions with each two of them being perpendicular to each other: the first direction mentioned above, a second direction, and a third direction. These three directions are typically referred to as a  left-right direction A, a front-rear direction L, and an up-down direction T in the field. Therefore, in order to conform to convention and facilitate understanding, directional terms "left (leftward) " , "right (rightward) " , "front (forward) " , "rear (rearward) " , "up (upward) " , and "down (downward) " will be used in the description. The left-right direction (i.e. the first direction mentioned above) A defines opposite leftward and rightward directions (or sides) , the front-rear direction L defines opposite forward and rearward directions (or sides) , and the up-down direction T defines opposite upward and downward directions (or sides) . It should be understood that these directional terms are only understood with reference to the placement of components in the drawings (i.e. the placement of the laser leveling device in use) , and are only used for the purpose that the author can describe the present application clearly and the readers can understand the present application clearly, without limitation. When the placement of the components changes, the meaning of the directional terms shall change accordingly. During the use of the laser leveling device, the up-down direction is a vertical direction.

[0022] The terms "inward" and "outward" are also used in the description, which refer to the direction from outside of the laser leveling device toward inside of the laser leveling device (or toward a pendulum in the interior) and the direction from the inside of the laser leveling device to the outside of the laser leveling device (or away from the pendulum) , respectively.

[0023] The left bracket 100a and the right bracket 100b, respectively, comprise left and right bracket bodies (or left and right walls of the bracket assembly) 113a and 113b that extend substantially in a plane defined by the front-rear direction L and the up-down direction T, and left and right extensions 117a and 117b that extend toward each other from respective lower ends of the left and right bracket bodies 113a and 113b. With the left bracket 100a and the right bracket 100b connected together, the left and right extensions 117a and 117b form a bottom wall 113c (as shown in Figures 1 and 5) of the bracket assembly and define an opening 119 in the bottom wall 113c for mounting a base 122. As shown in Figure 1, the base 122 comprises a central hole 124.

[0024] A pendulum assembly 110 of the laser leveling device is accommodated within the interior defined by the left bracket 100a and the right bracket 100b. The pendulum assembly 110 comprises a support structure 112 with opposite ends in the left-right directions A supported by left and right brackets 100a and 100b, respectively, a pendulum 114 supported by the support structure 112 and suspended in the interior, and at least one laser source installed on the pendulum 114.

[0025] The pendulum 114 of the pendulum assembly 110 extends downwards from the support structure 112 into the central hole 124 in the base 122 of the bracket assembly. In use, the pendulum 114 moves or swings freely under gravity and then stops at a suspended position. In some embodiments, the pendulum 114 may be attached to the support structure 112 via a universal joint so as to be capable of free swinging. In some embodiments, the pendulum 114 may be attached to the support structure 112 via any suitable pivot device so as to pivot (or rotate or swing) around at least one axis relative to the support structure 112 or relative to the bracket assembly of the laser leveling device. In some embodiments, the pendulum 114 can pivot around an axis extending in the front-rear direction L and can pivot around an axis extending in the left-right direction A.

[0026] In some embodiments, the laser leveling device may comprise one or more laser sources. The laser sources each are carded by the pendulum 114 so as to move together with the pendulum 114 during any movement of the pendulum 114. In the illustrated embodiment, the laser leveling device is equipped with two laser sources 116a and 116b to emit laser beams in horizontal and vertical planes, respectively. Correspondingly, when connected together, the left bracket 100a and the right bracket 100b define apertures 111a and 111b through which the two laser sources 116b and 116b are allowed to extend forward out of the bracket assembly. Type, arrangement and quantity of the laser sources are not limited in this application.

[0027] Figure 1 also illustrates a damping device 115 which is configured to rapidly stabilize the pendulum 114 into the suspended position during the use of the laser leveling device. For example, the damping device 115 can be a magnet.

[0028] Although not shown in Figure 1, it is shown in Figure 6 that the laser leveling device further comprises a housing assembly 101 outside of the bracket assembly. In some embodiments, similar to the bracket assembly, the housing assembly 101 is also generally hexahedral in shape, and can be formed by two half shells (arranged opposite to each other in the left-right direction A or in the front-rear direction L) connected with each other. The laser sources 116a and 116b of the laser leveling device each extend out of the bracket assembly through their corresponding apertures 111a and 111b. Correspondingly, the housing assembly 101 of the laser leveling device is provided with windows corresponding to the laser sources extending from the bracket assembly, respectively, lights emitted from the laser sources being allowed to pass through the windows. In Figure 6, only the window 105 for the laser source 116a is identified. The window 105 can be formed with an opening formed in the housing assembly 101 and a glass cover installed to the opening.

[0029] Further, although not shown in the drawings, it is understood for those skilled in the art that the laser leveling device comprises a switch (or trigger) located on the housing assembly 101 that extends through a wall of the housing assembly 101 into the housing assembly 101 (e.g. into a gap between the housing assembly 101 and the bracket assembly) . The switch is configured to receive an external input, i.e. input from an operator. The operator actuates the switch to move it between an OFF position corresponding to the OFF state of the laser leveling device and an ON position corresponding to the ON state of the laser leveling device.

[0030] The laser leveling device of the present application further comprises a locking device 200 configured to selectively lock and release the pendulum 114 to provide a locking state in which the pendulum 114 is locked and a releasing (or unlocking) state in which the pendulum 114 is released. When the laser leveling device is not in use, such as when the laser leveling device is in a storage state, a transportation state, or any other non-use states, the locking device 200 is in the locking state, in which the locking device 200 locks (in particular clamps) the pendulum 114 between the locking device and the bracket assembly (e.g., the base 122 at the bottom wall 113c of the bracket assembly) , to prevent any unwanted movement of the pendulum 114 within the laser leveling device and avoid any possible collision with and damage to other components. When the laser leveling device is in use, the locking device 200 is in the releasing state, in which the pendulum 114 is released to be allowed to move / swing under gravity until it arrives and stops at the downward suspended position in the third (or vertical or up-down) direction T  as shown. Then, the laser sources 116a and 116b of the laser leveling device emit laser beams in both horizontal and vertical planes.

[0031] Referring to the drawings, in general, the locking device 200 of the present application may comprise a safety lock 210 and a locking arm 220. According to the principle of the present application, the safety lock 210 is configured to be engaged with the switch of the laser leveling device to receive the external input from the operator to switch the laser leveling device from the OFF state to the ON state and to move the switch from the OFF position to the ON position. The safety lock 210 is further configured to be engaged with the locking arm 220 to transmit the external input to the locking arm 220. Therefore, the locking arm 220 receives the external input to switch the laser leveling device from the OFF state to the ON state indirectly via the safety lock 210. On the other hand, the locking arm 220 is configured to be engaged with the switch of the laser leveling device to receive the external input from the operator to switch the laser leveling device from the ON state to the OFF state and to move the switch from the ON position to the OFF position. Therefore, the locking arm 220 receives the external input to switch the laser leveling device from the ON state to the OFF state directly from the switch of the laser leveling device.

[0032] The locking arm 220 of the locking device 200 is pivotably attached to the bracket assembly, and configured to pivot relative to the bracket assembly between a locking position corresponding to the OFF state and a releasing position corresponding to the ON state when indirectly or directly receiving the external input to switch the laser leveling device from one of the OFF state and the ON state to the other, as described above. The safety lock 210 of the locking device 200 is configured to: ifthe locking arm 220 does not receive the corresponding external input, prevent the locking arm 220 from moving from the locking position to the releasing position through an interference engagement with the bracket assembly and facilitate or help to block the locking arm 220 from moving from the releasing position to the locking position still through an interference engagement between the safety lock 210 and bracket assembly. The safety lock 210 of the locking device 200 is further configured to: firstly move (e.g. pivot) relative to the locking arm 220 before the locking arm 220 receives the external input to switch from the OFF state to the ON state, so as not to interfere with the bracket assembly during the subsequent movement of the locking arm from the locking position toward the releasing position after the locking arm receives the external input; or configured so that the movement of the locking arm 220 from the releasing position toward the locking position after it receives the external input to switch from the ON state to the OFF state overcomes the interference engagement between the locking arm 220 and the bracket assembly and then arrives at the locking position. In this way, the movement of the locking arm 220 between the locking position and the releasing position is achieved.

[0033] According to the principle of the present application, the locking arm 220 is pivotably attached to (the left bracket body or left wall l13a of) the left bracket 100a around a pivot axis X1 (in Figure 2) extending in the left-right direction A, so that the movement of the locking arm 220 between the locking position and the releasing position is achieved through pivoting relative to the left bracket 100a of the bracket assembly about the pivot axis X1. The locking arm 220 can pivot around the pivot axis X1 between the locking position in Figure 4a and the releasing position in Figure 4b. A first elastic element 230 is operatively associated between the locking  arm 220 and the left bracket 100a, for applying an elastic force to the locking arm 220 to maintain it in the locking or releasing position.

[0034] The safety lock 210 is pivotably attached to the locking arm 220 around a pivot axis X2 (in Figure 2) extending in the left-right direction A, and a second elastic element 240 (Figure 3) is operatively associated between the locking arm 220 and the safety lock 210. When the locking arm 220 is in the locking position shown in Figure 4a and the releasing position shown in Figure 4b, an elastic force of the second elastic element 240 maintains the safety lock 210 in a default position relative to the locking arm 220 as shown. Without any external input from the switch, the movement of the locking arm 220 from the locking position in Figure 4a toward the releasing position in Figure 4b will be prevented by the interference engagement between the safety lock 210 and the bracket assembly, which achieves the effect of preventing the locking arm 220 from accidentally moving from the locking position to the releasing position. The movement of the locking arm 220 from the releasing position in Figure 4b to the locking position in Figure 4a also requires at least overcoming the elastic force of the second elastic element 240 or the interference engagement between the safety lock 210 and the bracket assembly, which facilitates to block the locking arm 220 from accidentally moving from the releasing position to the locking position to some extent.

[0035] The locking device 200 of the present application will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.

[0036] The locking arm 220 of the locking device 200 can be generally L-shaped, comprising a first arm 220a and a second arm 220b that are connected to each other. The first arm 220a is pivotably attached to the left bracket 100a. In particular, the first arm 220a is located between the left bracket body l13a of the left bracket 100a of the bracket assembly and the housing assembly 101, and is pivotably attached to the left bracket body l13a outside of it (at a side away from the pendulum 114) . The second arm 220b extends through the left bracket body 113 a of the left bracket 100a into the interior defined by the bracket assembly, to be engaged with or disengaged from the pendulum 114 selectively.

[0037] The first arm 220a has opposite first and second ends 221 and 223 and is pivotably attached to the left bracket 100a at a position between the first and second ends 221 and 223. The safety lock 210 is engaged to the first end 221 of the first arm 220a, and the second arm 220b is connected to the second end 223 of the first arm 220a. In the illustrated embodiment, the locking arm 220 is an integral component comprising the first arm 220a and the second arm 220b.

[0038] The safety lock 210 may comprise a body 10 which is disposed between the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 and the left bracket 100a and is pivotably attached to the first arm 220a. In particular, the body 10 of the safety lock 210 comprises a hole 12, such as a through-hole or a blind-hole, and the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 comprises a post 13 configured to be received into the hole 12, such that the safety lock 210 can pivot relative to the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 about the pivot axis X2 defined by the post 13.

[0039] The safety lock 210 further comprises a first protruding post 14 extending outwards from the body 10, the first protruding post 14 extending outwards across the first arm 220a (across its thickness in the left-right direction A) of the locking arm 220 and beyond the first arm 220a, so  as to be engaged with the switch on the housing assembly 101 as described above. In the illustrated example, the first protruding post 14 has a shape of a semi-cylinder, and its outer circumferential surface comprises a first arc-shaped surface portion 14a (Figure 2) to be engaged with the switch of the laser leveling device and a first planar portion 14b (Figure 3) to be engaged with a corresponding planar portion 24b of the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220. Correspondingly, the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 comprises a second protruding post 24 that protrudes outwards, and the second protruding post 24 may have a structure substantially complementary to the first protruding post 14. For example, an outer circumferential surface of the second protruding post 24 comprises a second arc-shaped surface portion 24a (Figure 3) to be engaged with the switch of the laser leveling device and the second planar portion 24b (Figure 2) to be engaged with the first planar portion 14b of the first protruding post 14 of the safety lock 210.

[0040] The safety lock 210 further comprises an extension 16 extending from the body 10. As shown, the extension 16 is in the form of a rod. The left bracket 100a comprises a projection 26.

[0041] The second elastic element 240 is elastically arranged between the safety lock 210 and (the first arm 220a of) the locking arm 220. As an example, the second elastic element 240 can take the form of a leaf spring, as shown in Figure 3. A first end 240a of the leaf spring acts on the first protruding post 14 of the safety lock 210, and a second end 240b acts on a protrusion 22 extending from the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220. For example, the second end 240b is located in a gap 22c which is defined by opposite surfaces of two semi-cylindrical portions 22a and 22b of the protrusion 22.

[0042] Interaction between the safety lock 210 and the locking arm 220 will be explained in conjunction with Figures 4a and 4b.

[0043] In the locking state of the locking device 200 (i.e. the locking position of the locking arm 220) shown in Figure 4a and the releasing state of the locking device 200 (i.e. the releasing position of the locking arm 220) shown in Figure 4b, under the elastic force of the second elastic element 240, the safety lock 210 is maintained in the default position relative to the locking arm 220. At this position, there is a predetermined small gap between the extension 16 (its surface 16a or 16b) of the safety lock 210 and the projection 26 of the left bracket 100a. Ifthe locking arm 220 moves from the locking position in Figure 4a towards the releasing position in Figure 4b (i.e. pivoting clockwise around the pivot axis X1) , the surface 16a of the extension 16 of the safety lock 210 will interfere with the projection 26 to prevent this movement, and ifthe locking arm 220 moves from the releasing position in Figure 4b toward the locking position in Figure 4a, the subsequent interference (although the location of the interference or engagement may be changed) which occurs between the surface 16b of the extension 16 of the safety lock 210 and the projection 26 must be overcome.

[0044] From the locking state shown in Figure 4a, if the laser leveling device is to be switched from the OFF state to the ON state and the switch is to be moved from the OFF position to the ON position, the switch transmits an actuating force (external force or external input) from the operator to the first arc-shaped surface portion 14a of the first protruding post 14 of the safety lock 210 engaged with the switch. The actuating force overcomes the elastic force of the second elastic element 240, causes the safety lock 210 to pivot clockwise about the pivot axis X2  relative to the locking arm 220, so that the surface 16a of the extension 16 of the safety lock 210 will not interference with the projection 26 of the left bracket 100a. Afterwards, once the first planar portion 14b of the first protruding post 14 of the safety lock 210 engages the second planar portion 24b of the second protruding post 24 of the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220, the actuating force is transmitted to the locking arm 220 and overcomes the elastic force applied by the first elastic element 230 on the locking arm 220. The second protruding post 24 is pushed and the locking arm 220 is pivoted clockwise around the pivot axis X1 until the locking arm 220 arrives at the releasing position shown in Figure 4b. The first elastic element 230 maintains the locking arm 220 in the releasing position and the second elastic element 240 returns the safety lock 210 to its default position.

[0045] On the contrary, from the releasing state in Figure 4b, if the laser leveling device is to be switched from the ON state to the OFF state and the switch is to be moved from the ON position to the OFF position, the switch transmits an actuating force (external force or external input) from the operator to the second arc-shaped surface portion 24a of the second protruding post 24 of the locking arm 220 engaged with the switch. The actuating force overcomes the elastic force exerted by the first elastic element 230 on the locking arm 220, causing the locking arm 220 to pivot counterclockwise relative to the left bracket 100a. The surface 16b of the extension 16 of the safety lock 210 begins to interfere with the projection 26 of the left bracket 100a (as shown in Figure 4b) . The actuating force further overcomes the elastic force exerted by the second elastic element 240 on the safety lock 210, causing the safety lock 210 to pivot clockwise about the pivot axis X2. The counterclockwise pivoting of the locking arm 220 and the clockwise pivoting of the safety lock 210 occur simultaneously, causing the surface 16b of the extension 16 of the safety lock 210 to slide against the projection 26 of the left bracket 100a. During this process, the interference engagement between the safety lock 210 and the left bracket 100a provides some resistance on the pivoting movement of the locking arm 220, but cannot block the pivoting movement of the locking arm 220 (because the actuating force is large enough) . After the surface 16b of the extension 16 of the safety lock 210 passes across the projection 26 of the left bracket 100a, the elastic force of the second elastic element 230 causes the safety lock 210 to return or bounce back to its default position relative to the locking arm 220 (in which the first planar portion 14b of the first protruding post 14 of the safety lock 210 faces but does not contact the second planar portion 24b of the second protruding post 24 of the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220, for example, with a gap Q therebetween, as shown in Figures 4a and 4b) , and the elastic force of the first elastic element 230 causes the locking arm 220 to rapidly enter the locking position shown in Figure 4a. At this time, there may be a small gap between the surface 16a of the extension 16 of the safety lock 210 and the projection 26 of the bracket assembly.

[0046] By providing the safety lock 210 and the second elastic element 240 associated between the safety lock 210 and the locking arm 220, the locking device 200 of the present application ensures that, only after the safety lock 210 moves away from the interference engagement with the bracket assembly in response to receiving the external input, the locking arm 220 can move from the locking position to the releasing position. This effectively eliminates the possibility of the locking arm 220 of the locking device 200 of the laser leveling device accidentally releases the pendulum 114 from the locking position shown in Figure 4a. The safety lock of the present  application also helps to block (although cannot prevent absolutely) the locking arm 220 from accidentally moving from the releasing position of Figure 4b to the locking position of Figure 4a without receiving corresponding external input, as this also requires overcoming the elastic force of the second elastic element 240 and overcoming the interference engagement between the safety lock 210 and the bracket assembly.

[0047] Description will be made to the locking arm 220. As mentioned above, the second protruding post 24 at the first end 221 of the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 is used to engage the switch of the laser leveling device and to engage the safety lock 210. The first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 is pivotably attached to the left bracket 100a at a position between the first end 221 and the second end 223. In particular, the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 comprises a through-hole 32 that passes through the first arm 220a in the left-right direction A. Correspondingly, the left bracket 100a comprises a projection 34 extending from its left bracket body 113a toward the locking arm 220, and the projection 34 is formed with a threaded hole 36. When the projection 34 of the left bracket 100a is received into the through-hole 32 of the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220, the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 can pivot around the projection 34 of the left bracket 100a (and around the pivot axis X1 defined by the projection 34) . A fastener, such as a bolt 38, extends through the through-hole 32 on the first arm 220a of locking arm 220 and is fastened into the threaded hole 36, serving as a stop to prevent the first arm 220a of locking arm 220 from being accidentally disengaged from projection 34 in the left-right direction A. Alternatively, ifthe projection 34 is provided separately from the left bracket 100a, the fastener can also be used to secure the projection 34 to the left bracket 100a.

[0048] For example, a head (or a portion thereof) of the bolt 38 is received in a portion of the stepped through-hole 32 having a relatively larger inner diameter, so that the bolt 38 does not have to protrude into a void between the left bracket body l13a of the bracket assembly and a corresponding wall of the housing assembly 101 in the left-right direction A, saving space as possible as it can. In the illustrated example, the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 has a portion 33 with an increased thickness (e.g., in the portion where the through-hole 32 is located) , to improve local strength.

[0049] The second arm 220b is connected to the second end 223 of the first arm 220a, and extends inwards generally in the left-right direction A into the interior defined by the bracket assembly to be engaged with the pendulum 114.

[0050] For this purpose, the left bracket 100a is formed with a groove 42 that extends through the left bracket 100a in the left-right direction A to allow the second arm 220b to pass through. For example, the groove 42 can be arc-shaped. The groove 42 is sized and shaped to allow the second arm 220 to pass through into the interior and to allow the second arm 220b to move or slide arcuately along the groove 42 when the locking arm 220 pivots around the pivot axis X1.

[0051] The second arm 220b comprises an engagement feature configured to be selectively engaged the pendulum 114 of the laser leveling device. As shown, the engagement feature is a notch 44 formed in the second arm 220b, and the notch 44 is designed to receive a portion of the pendulum 114 therein. The notch 44 can be V-shaped. The portion of the pendulum 114 which is received in the notch 44 may be a cylindrical portion of the pendulum 114.

[0052] The notch 44 opens rearwards in the front-rear direction L and extends through the second arm 220b in the up-down direction T. In the locking position of Figure 4a, the pendulum 114 is clamped between the notch 44 (surfaces defining the notch 44) and the corresponding structure of the bracket assembly in the front-rear direction L. In the illustrated example, the pendulum 114 partially extends into the central hole 124 in the base 122 of the bracket assembly, and is sandwiched and clamped between the notch 44 and a rear portion of an inner wall or inner surface of the base 122 that defines the central hole 124 in the front-rear direction L. In other words, in the front-rear direction L, the pendulum 114 is pushed onto or against the inner wall of the central hole 124 of the base 122 by (the surface of) the notch 44 of the second arm 220b.

[0053] It can also be seen that the engagement feature (notch 44) of the second arm 220b of the locking arm 220 for engaging the pendulum 114 is provided by an arm body 41 which is generally formed as a plate. In addition, the second arm 220a further comprises a guiding end 46 extending from the arm body 41, which can be a cylindrical end. Correspondingly, the right bracket 100b of the laser leveling device comprises a guiding groove 48 (in Figure 1) for receiving a portion of the guiding end 46 of the second arm 220b. The guiding groove 48 may or may not extend through the right bracket 100b in the left-right direction A. When the locking arm 220 pivots around the pivot axis X1, in addition to the second arm 220b moving arcuately along the groove 42 of the left bracket 100a, the guiding end 46 moves arcuately along the guiding groove 48. The arrangement that the second arm 220b of the locking arm 220 is supported at two ends provides an increased rigidity for it, and further ensures that the surface of the notch 44 of the second arm 220b of the locking arm 220 exerts a sufficient pushing or clamping force on the pendulum 114.

[0054] In the illustrated embodiment, the first elastic element 230, which is provided between the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 and the left bracket 100a, is shown as a type of torque spring. An annular end 230a of the first elastic element 230 is fitted over a first post 54 (Figure 3) protruding from the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220, and a bolt 51 is used to fasten the first post 54 which is formed independently of the locking arm 220 to the locking arm 220. The first post 54 comprises at least one first lug 57 (e.g. two first lugs arranged symmetrically) for preventing the annular end 230a of the first elastic element 230 from rotating relative to the first post 54. The other annular end 230b of the first elastic element 230 is fitted over a second post 56 protruding from the left bracket 100a. The second post 56 is a component that is provided independently and fastened to the left bracket 100a using a fastener, such as a screw 53. The second post 56 comprises at least one second lug 59 for preventing the annular end 230b of the first elastic element 230 from rotating relative to the second post 56.

[0055] The locking arm 220 also comprises a finger 62 protruding from the first arm, which is configured to be engaged with a tongue 65 (as shown in Figures 1, 4a, and 4b) of a power switch 64 for controlling a power supply of the laser leveling device, to energize the laser leveling device, when the laser leveling device is placed into the ON state; and to be disengaged from the tongue 65 of the power switch 64 to cut off the power supply of the laser leveling device when the laser leveling device is switched from the ON state toward the OFF state.

[0056] As shown in Figure 3, the locking arm 220, in particular its first arm 220a, further comprises two stop portions 72 and 74. Correspondingly, the left bracket 100a comprises limit portions 76  and 78 configured to be engaged with the two stop portions 72 and 74, respectively, as shown in Figures 4a and 4b. In the illustrated example, the limit portions 76 and 78 each are in the form of a protrusion or handle extending from the left bracket 100a, and the stop portions 72 and 74 are in the form or a recessed or stepped portion for abutting the limit portions 76 and 78.

[0057] In the locking position shown in Figure 4a, the stop portion 72 of the locking arm 220 is engaged with the corresponding limit portion 76 on the left bracket 100a. When the locking arm 220 moves from the releasing position shown in Figure 4b to the locking position shown in Figure 4a, the engagement of the stop portion 72 of the locking arm 220 with the corresponding limit portion 76 on the left bracket 100a causes the locking arm 220 to stop abruptly in the locking position, and the elastic force of the first elastic element 230 maintains the locking arm 220 in the locking position.

[0058] In the releasing position shown in Figure 4b, the stop portion 74 of the locking arm 220 is engaged with the corresponding limit portion 78 on the left bracket 100a. When the locking arm 220 moves from the locking position in Figure 4a to the releasing position in Figure 4b, the engagement of the stop portion 74 of the locking arm 220 with the corresponding limit portion 78 on the left bracket 100a causes the locking arm 220 to stop abruptly in the releasing position, and the elastic force of the first elastic element 230 maintains the locking arm 220 in the releasing position.

[0059] Figure 5 is a bottom view of the laser leveling device in the state of Figure 4a. It can be seen that, in the front-rear direction L, the pendulum 114 is inclined rearwards relative to or from the suspended position and pushed onto the inner wall of the central hole 124 of the base 122 of the bracket assembly by the surface of the notch 44 of the second arm 220b.

[0060] Figure 6 is a view of a portion of Figure 4a after rotated counterclockwise by 90 degrees. It can be clearly seen that, in Figure 6, the pendulum 114 is locked by the locking device 200 in the inclined position offset rearwards from the suspended position, compared to the pendulum 114 being locked in the suspended position, the laser source protruding forward from the pendulum 114, in particular the outermost lens of the lower laser source l16a in the vertical direction T, is farther from the window 105 (or the glass cover) of the housing assembly 101 and has a larger spacing P. For example, the spacing P can be greater than 6 mm, while this spacing P may be around 3 mm when the pendulum 114 is in a suspended position. Therefore, when the laser leveling device falls with the front side facing downwards, the possibility of vibration, impact, and damage to the laser source 116a (in particular its outermost lens) is reduced. Therefore, the laser leveling device equipped with the locking device 200 of the present application has an improved fall protection function.

[0061] In this aspect, the present application provides a laser leveling device with a superior fall protection function. The laser leveling device comprises a novel pendulum locking device of the present application. The locking device comprises a locking arm attached to a bracket assembly and selectively engaged with a pendulum, and the locking arm is configured to pivot relative to the bracket assembly from one of a locking position and a releasing position to the other in response to receiving an external input of the laser leveling device. In the locking position, the locking arm pushes the pendulum rearwards to an inclined position offset from a suspended position and clamps the pendulum between the locking arm and a corresponding  structure of the bracket assembly. By maintaining or locking the pendulum in the inclined position offset from the suspended position, the locking arm of the locking device provides a better fall protection effect over the prior art for sensitive or fragile within the laser leveling device components near or at its front side, in particular for a cylindrical lens of a laser source on the front side.

[0062] Due to the increased spacing P mentioned above, when the laser leveling device falls with its front side facing downwards, the laser leveling device can tolerate a larger amount of deformation of the locking arm 220. This further reduces a deceleration rate of the pendulum 114, decreases a G-value (gravitational acceleration) on the pendulum, provides better buffering performance for the pendulum, and thus can protect the pendulum 114 better. It has been proved through calculations and tests by the inventor that, due to the better buffering performance, when the laser leveling device falls with the front side facing downwards, the G value on the pendulum caused by an impact of the laser leveling device decreases to 600-800G from 1200-1400G for the existing structure.

[0063] According to the laser leveling device comprising the locking device 200 described above, when it is to be switched from the OFF state to the ON state, the locking arm 220 receives the external input or external force from the switch of the laser leveling device indirectly via the safety lock 210, and pivots from the locking position toward the releasing position around the pivot axis X1 extending in the left-right direction after receiving the external force. When it is to be switched from the ON state to the OFF state, the locking arm receives the external force from the switch of the laser leveling device directly, and pivots from the releasing position towards the locking position around the pivot axis X1 in an opposite direction after receiving the external force. Therefore, the locking device 200 of the present application, after receiving the external force (directly or indirectly) , achieves transition between a state in which the pendulum is locked and a state in which the pendulum is released simply by the pivoting movement of the locking arm 220 (around the pivot axis X1 transverse to, such as perpendicular to the vertical direction) . Compared to a locking device that at least comprises two locking arms that rotate around the vertical direction and at least one intermediate transmission component that transmits external input to the two locking arms by rotating around a direction perpendicular to the vertical direction, the locking device of the present application has a significantly simplified structure, requiring only an integrated locking arm that is pivotably attached to the bracket assembly of the laser leveling device. This reduces costs in all aspects.

[0064] In this aspect, the present application provides a laser leveling device comprising a pendulum locking device which has a greatly simplified structure. The locking device of the laser leveling device comprises a locking arm that is pivotably attached to the bracket assembly to pivot relative to the bracket assembly between a locking position and a releasing position about a pivot axis extending in a direction (e.g. the left-right direction) transverse to the vertical direction in response to receiving an external input to switch from one of an OFF state and an ON state to the other. The locking arm comprises an engagement feature configured to be engaged with a pendulum in the locking position and disengaged from the pendulum in the releasing position.

[0065] The application also provides a novel locking device of a laser leveling device for securely  locking a locking arm of the locking device in a locking position and in a releasing position. A safety lock of the locking device of the laser leveling device and a bracket assembly of the laser leveling device each comprise interference features that cooperate with each other. These interference features are configured to prevent the locking arm from accidentally moving from the locking position to the releasing position through a first interference engagement (established between a first surface of the safety lock and a first surface of the bracket assembly) without an external input of switching from an OFF state to an ON state; and further configured to facilitate to block the locking arm from accidentally moving from the releasing position to the locking position to some extent through a second interference engagement (established between a second surface of the safety lock and a second surface of the bracket assembly) without an external input of switching from the ON state to the OFF state.

[0066] The laser leveling device shown in the drawings has been described in detail as above. However, it should be understood for those skilled in the art that, this application is not limited to the details shown in the drawings and described above. Without departing from the spirit and scope of the present application, modification, addition and deletion can be made to the embodiments described as above, and the resulting new embodiments are still within the scope of protection of the present application. Below are listed some possible modifications that the applicant has already envisioned.

[0067] In the illustrated example, the locking arm 220 is provided as an integrated component comprising the first arm 220a and the second arm 220b, but it is also conceived that the first arm and the second arm are formed separately and attached to each other, which is within the principle of the present application and achieves the same technical effects described above. On the premise of being able to achieve the functions described herein, the locking arm 220 is not limited to be L-shaped, and embodiments in which the safety lock is engaged with the locking arm 220 at any location are conceived. As an example, the safety lock may be directly engaged with the second arm 220b which extends into the interior to be engaged with the pendulum, and directly drive the second arm 220b to be engaged with or disengaged from the pendulum selectively. The movement of the locking arm 220 between the locking position and the releasing position is not limited to pivoting or rotating, and the movement of the safety lock relative the locking arm 220 is not limited to pivoting or rotating, either.

[0068] In the illustrated example, the engagement feature of the second arm 220b of the locking arm 220 to be engaged with the pendulum 114 is the notch 44. The notch 44 is not limited to be V-shaped as shown. In some embodiments, a rearward facing surface 61 of the second arm 220b, i.e., the surface 61 where the notch 44 is formed (as shown in Figure 3) , can also serve as the engagement feature of the locking arm 220, provided the second arm 220b is appropriately sized. Optionally, a protruding portion or any other structural features on the second arm 220b that can achieve the above-mentioned functionality can be used as the engagement feature.

[0069] In the illustrated example, the engagement of the guiding end 46 of the second arm 220b of the locking arm 220 with the guiding groove 48 in the right bracket 100b can improve the rigidity of the second arm 220b of the locking arm 220, but this is not necessary for the laser leveling device of the present application. In addition, the guiding end 46 that provides for the guiding effect is not limited to the cylindrical end as shown, and any other shape of guiding end can be  used.

[0070] In the illustrated example, the arm body 41 of the second arm 220b and the first arm 220a of the locking arm 220 each have, but not limited to, a plate-like structure.

[0071] In the illustrated example, both the guiding groove 48 formed in the right bracket 100b to guide the guiding end 46 of the second arm 220b and the groove 42 formed in the left bracket 100a to allow the second arm 220b to pass through are arc-shaped. This is optional, but not necessary. Each groove of the guiding groove 48 and the groove 42 can be designed so that the arc length be slightly larger than a pivot stroke of the locking arm 220 so that, no matter the locking arm 220 is in the locking position or releasing position, the locking arm does not contact the corresponding end of any of the grooves 48 and 42. In this way, when the locking arm 220 moves rapidly towards the locking position or releasing position under the elastic force of the first elastic element 230, but is suddenly stopped by the engagement between one of the stop portions 72 and 74 on the locking arm 220 and the corresponding one of the limit portions 76 and 78 on the bracket assembly, the predetermined gap at each end of each of the guiding groove 48 and the groove 42 and the small gap between the surface 16a / 16b of the extension 16 of the safety lock 210 and the projection 26 of the bracket assembly shown in Figures 4a and 4b allow the locking arm 220 to shake or vibrate with a small amplitude and a high frequency, which provides a protective buffering function for the locking arm 220.

[0072] In the illustrated embodiment, the first protruding post 14 of the safety lock 210 to be engaged with the switch of the laser leveling device also provides the function to be engaged with the locking arm 220 to transmit the external input to the locking arm 220. However, it is also conceived by the applicant that the safety lock 210 can be provided with a dedicated feature to be engaged with the locking arm 220 to transmit the external input to the locking arm 220, different from and other than the first protruding post 14. The first protruding post 14 is not limited to the semi-cylindrical shape as shown.

[0073] Similarly, although the second protruding post 24 of the locking arm 220 to be engaged with the switch of the laser leveling device also provides the function to be engaged with the safety lock 210, it is also conceived by the applicant that the locking arm 220 may comprise a dedicated first feature to be engaged with the switch of the laser leveling device and a dedicated second feature to be engaged with the safety lock 210. The second protruding post 24 is not limited to the semi-cylindrical shape, either.

[0074] Only some of possible modifications have been listed as above, and they are not exhaustive. Any modifications made by ordinary technical personnel in this field based on the disclosure of this application are considered as falling within the scope of protection of this application.
