A qualifying connection for an instrument attaches to a source of electrosurgery energy and to the instrument and has first and second parts coupled to the instrument and the source, respectively. Optical couplings on the connection transmit invisible energy to identify the instrument and are proximate on the first and second parts. A light modifier on the first part is proximal to the second part for modification of radiation in the infrared wavelengths so infrared transmitters encode signals and non-contact coded proximity detectors on the second part are the coupled detectors. Mechanical attachments include conjugating male and female portions which physically extend between the parts and matingly engage. An identifying circuit couples to the second part and responds to invisible light optically communicated across the couplings for verifying the type of instrument connected by the cable to the source. A method of using the connection has steps including juxtaposing and conjugating the parts with attachments and couplings for transmitting invisible optical energy to identify the instrument. The method includes modifying the invisible optical energy with geographically disposed proximate couplings of the parts when the attachments engage and the couplings are proximate. Passing and assessing signals of the modified energy are transmitted through the connection and to an identifying circuit in the source.

Wetness monitoring system

The present invention relates to a wetness monitoring system that includes a data collection device that sends wetness measurement data to a central computer that detects changes in wetness measurement data caused by the presence of urine or other dielectric fluids. The data collection device includes a semi-reusable sensor and reusable data collector that are worn on a garment of the person. The data collector includes an internal power source so that the person can live a normal ambulatory life. The data collector has an electrical circuit that uses the changing resistance characteristics in the sensor to gather wetness measurement data. The data collector periodically generates and transmits a signal containing the actual wetness measurement data. The signals are coded to identify the particular data collector or person sending the signal. The data collector is programmed to conserve power by sending signals less frequently during periods when the sensor is clearly dry. Signals are sent more frequently when the sensor is damp or a wetness event may have occurred. The central computer receives the signals containing the wetness measurement data and compares the measurement data to an adjustable wetness sensitivity level to determine if a wetness event has occurred. When the central computer determines that a wetness event has occurred, the computer displays the name of the particular person wearing the data collector and the approximate time that the wetness event occurred. The system then pages an appropriate healthcare worker to inform them that the particular individual needs attention and tracks the approximate response times to ensure that the patient is continuously receiving prompt care.

Automatic exchanger for peritoneal dialysis

An automatic exchanger apparatus for peritoneal dialysis fluids is provided having a dialysis fluid bag and a drained fluid bag and arranged for connecting and disconnecting between the end of a peritoneal dialysis circuit equipped with a branching point and the end of a tube extending from a patient to drain the waste dialysis fluid from the cavity of the patient and fill the peritoneal cavity of the patient with a fresh peritoneal dialysis fluid for exchange, and in particular comprises: means A, B, and C for carrying out respectively a step (A) of connecting the end of the patient side tube to the end of the peritoneal dialysis circuit, a step (B) of delivering and draining the waste fluid, and a step (C) of, disconnecting the two ends and connecting the end of the patient side tube to its shut-off member, arranged for carrying out their respective steps (A) and (C) automatically; and a controlling means for controlling the respectively means to execute their respectively steps in a sequence. The apparatus is simple in the construction while carrying out, with much ease, the connection and disconnection of the tubes and the exchange of the fluids including a waste and a fresh supply one, hence avoiding operational errors of the operator and minimizing the possibility of infection and contamination.
