Description

ROBOTIC JOINTFIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to a robot, and more specifically, to a robotic joint.BACKGROUND

[0002] Multi-axis industrial robots are widely used in industry fields. A robot typically comprises a manipulator formed by a plurality of joints. In many applications, there is an increasing need for higher trajectory motion accuracy. A position sensor is provided in the joint to determine an angular position of a rotating component of the joint. Typically, the position sensor is provided on a shaft of a motor. However, when the drive chain from the motor to the rotating component of the joint includes a plurality of components, such as a belt-transmission, the plurality of components may cause systemic errors, which cannot meet high accuracy requirements. There is a need to further improve the arrangement of a joint.SUMMARY

[0003] Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a robotic joint and a robot which mitigates or obviates one or more above mentioned problems.

[0004] In a first aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a robotic joint. The robotic joint comprises: a first joint casing; and a second joint casing configured to rotate with respect to the first joint casing around an axial direction and comprising a drive side located at one side of the axial direction and a support side opposite to the first side; wherein on the drive side, the second joint casing is rotatably supported by the first joint casing via a rolling bearing, and on the support side, the second joint casing is rotatably supported by the first joint casing via a plain bearing.

[0005] With this arrangement, the support structure of the robotic joint can be simplified, resulting lower costs. Use of the plain bearing also makes it possible to arrange a position sensor on the second joint casing.

[0006] In some embodiments, the robotic joint may further comprise a position sensor mounted at the support side and configured to sense an angular position of the second joint casing, and the position sensor is an optical sensor or an magnetic sensor comprising a tape fixed to a part of the second joint casing and a scanning head fixed to a part of the first joint casing. With this arrangement, the angular position of the second joint casing can be determined with improved precision.

[0007] In some embodiments, the first joint casing may comprise a first tubular body extending along the axial direction; the second joint casing comprises a second tubular body located at the support side and extending along the axial direction, and the second tubular body is coaxially arranged with respect to the first tubular body to define a gap therebetween; and the plain bearing is received within the gap between the first tubular body and the second tubular body.

[0008] In some embodiments, the tape may be fixed to an outer surface of the second tubular body; and the first joint casing may further comprise a first recess adjacent to the outer surface of the second tubular body and configured to receive the scanning head.

[0009] In some embodiments, the second joint casing may comprise a body defining an inner chamber, and the second tubular body extends from the body and defines a channel in communication with the inner chamber, the channel comprising a first axial end adjacent to the body and a second axial end opposite to the first axial end; the first tubular body is arranged in the channel; and an inner surface of the plain bearing is rotatable with respect to the first tubular body, and an outer surface of the plain bearing is fixed to an inner surface of the second tubular body via an interference fit.

[0010] In some embodiments, the first tubular body may comprise a positioning flange at the second axial end of the channel, and the positioning flange extends in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction and is configured to position an axial end of the plain bearing.

[0011] In some embodiments, the channel may be configured to allow passage of cables.

[0012] In some embodiments, the first tubular body may further comprise a lip adjacent to the second axial end of the channel, the lip at least partially extends away from the channel in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction, and the first tubular body is fixed to the first joint casing via the lip.

[0013] In some embodiments, the first joint casing may further comprise a third tubular body by which the first tubular body and the second tubular body are axially surrounded; and an axial end of the third tubular body comprises a second recess, and a seal is received in the second recess to seal an interface between the first joint casing and the second joint casing.

[0014] In some embodiments, the first joint casing may further comprise a protection cover to cover a space where the scanning head is located.

[0015] In some embodiments, the first joint casing may comprise: a second body; and a first arm and a second arm both extending from the second body, the first arm and the second arm defining a space for sandwiching the second casing.

[0016] In some embodiments, on the drive side, the second joint casing may be configured to be fixed to an output of a reducer, the reducer being configured to receive a power from a belt-transmission arranged within the first joint casing.

[0017] In a second aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a robot. The robot comprises a manipulator, the manipulator comprising at least one of the robotic joint of the any of the first aspect.

[0018] It would be appreciated that this summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of embodiments of the present disclosure, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the present disclosure. Other features of the present disclosure will become evident through the following description.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0030] Fig. 1 is an overall view of an industrial robot 100 according to one example embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 1, the industrial robot comprises a manipulator 1. In the shown example, the manipulator 1 includes three pair of joints 10a, 10b, 10c. Each joint 10a, 10b, 10c comprises a first joint casing 100a, 100b, 100c and a second joint casing 200a, 200b, 200c. The first joint casing 100a, 100b, 100c is configured to rotate with respect to the second joint casing 200a, 200b, 200c. In the show example, there are six axes. In particular, an end flange 300 arranged at the distal end of the manipulator is ratable with respect to the second joint casing 200a; the joint casing 100a is configured to rotate with respect to the second joint casing 200a; the joint casing 100a is configured to rotate with respect to the joint casing 200b; the joint casing 200b is configured to rotate with respect to the joint casing 100b; the joint casing 100b is configured to rotate with respect to the joint casing 100c; the joint casing 100c is configured to rotate with respect to the joint casing 200c. It is to be understood that the number of the axes may any other proper number, for example, 4, 5, 7, and the like.

[0031] The three pairs of joints 10a, 10b, 10c may take similar configuration and each comprise double axes perpendicular to each other. Taking the wrist joint 10a as an example, the wrist joint 10a is provided near a distal end of the manipulator 1. The wrist joint 10a comprises a first joint casing 100a and a second joint casing 200a. The second joint casing 200a is configured to rotate around an axial direction X1 with respect to the first joint casing 100a. The end flange 300 is ratable with respect to the second joint casing 200a around an axial direction X2 perpendicular to the axial direction X1. User’s tools, such as various grippers, may be fixed to the end flange 300. During operation of the robot, the manipulator is programmed to move and the end flange 300 moves accordingly so as to perform various tasks.

[0032] Figs. 2-7 show different views of a robotic joint 10 according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 2-4 (also referring to Fig. 1) , the wrist joint 10 is in a form of a fork. The fork may include a body 116, a first arm 114, and a second arm 112. The first arm 114 and the second arm 112 extend from the body 116 and are substantially in parallel with each other to define a space for sandwiching the second joint casing 200. The body 116 may define an inner chamber. One or more motors for rotating the second joint casing 200 and / or the end flange 30 are arranged within the inner chamber of the body 116.

[0033] As shown in Figs. 2-4, a motor 172 is arranged in the body 116. The motor 172 is connected to a reducer 174 via a belt-transmission. The belt 176 and a pulley 178 may be arranged on a side where the first arm 114 is located. This side is corresponding to a drive side 211 of the second joint casing 200. A casing of the reducer 174 may be fixed to the first joint casing 100 (in particular the first arm 114) . An output of the reducer 174 is fixed to the second joint casing 200. On the drive side 211 of the second joint casing 200, the second joint casing 200 is rotatably supported by the first joint casing 100 (in particular, the first arm 114) via a roller bearing. In the shown example, the roller bearing is not shown but integrated into the reducer 174. The first arm 114 of the second joint casing 200 comprises a recess for receiving the reducer 174. An inner ring of the roller bearing is fixed to the first arm 114 via screw fasteners and an outer ring of the roller bearing is fixed to the second joint casing 200 via screw fasteners.

[0034] On an opposite side of the drive side 211, which is corresponding to a support drive side 213 of the second joint casing 200, the second joint casing 200 is rotatably supported by the first joint casing 100 (in particular, the second arm 112) via a second bearing. During operation of the robotic joint, as the motor 172 operates, a power from the motor 172 is transmitted to the reducer 174 via the belt-transmission. The second joint casing 200 rotates accordingly. Since the second joint casing 200 is well supported on both the drive side 211 and the support side 213. Structural stability is ensured. In the shown example, a belt-transmission is used for rotating the second joint casing 200. It is to be understood that the shown example is merely illustrative and any other proper means may be used to rotate the second joint casing 200.

[0035] According to the present disclosure, as shown in Figs. 3-4, a plain bearing 120, instead of a roller bearing, is used as the second bearing. Use of a plain bearing may bring about a number of advantages. The use of the plain bearing may simplify the structure of the robotic joint 10, resulting in reduced costs. In addition, a plain bearing is suitable for low-speed rotation of heavy load. The second joint casing 200 rotates at a lower speed. When the plain bearing 120 is used for supporting the second joint casing 200 on the support side 213, additional lubrication may be obviated.

[0036] Some other advantages of use of the plain bearing is related to position measurement. A position sensor is provided to determine an angular position of the second joint casing 200. Typically, the position sensor is mounted on the motor 172. However, this is not satisfactory in terms of precision. That is because the position sensor is away from the second joint casing 200 and system errors, such as those caused by the transmission chain and those caused by joint deformation under different loads due to temperature changes, cannot be compensated.

[0037] According to the present disclosure, when a plain bearing 120 is used as the second bearing, a compact structure of the plain bearing provides enough space to install the position sensor. Due to the fact that the position sensor is arranged at the support side 213 of the second joint casing 200, the system errors, such as those caused by the transmission chain and those caused by joint deformation under different loads due to temperature changes, can be obviated. Thus, the position sensor can provide more precise measurements. The position sensor installed on the support side is far away from a heat source on the driving side. Thus, the measurement errors caused by the temperature rise can be reduced. In addition, the position sensor installed on the support side makes it possible to use an optical sensor or a magnetic sensor which has better pression than a magnetic encoder, which may further improve measurement precision.

[0038] In some embodiments, as best shown in Fig. 5 (also referring to Figs. 3-4) , the robotic joint 10 further comprises a position sensor 140 mounted at the support side 213. The position sensor 140 is configured to sense an angular position of the second joint casing 200. In the shown example, the position sensor 140 may be an optical sensor or a magnetic sensor. The sensor comprises an tape 144 and a scanning head 142. When the position sensor 140 is an optical sensor, the tape may be an optical tape scale. When the position sensor 140 is a magnetic sensor, the tape may be a magnetic tape. The tape 144 may be fixed to a part of the second joint casing 200 and / or a part of the plain bearing 120. The scanning head 142 may be fixed to a part of the first joint casing 100. In the shown example, the position sensor 140 is shown to be an optical sensor. It is to be understood that the position sensor 140 may be any other types of sensors.

[0039] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 2-4 and Figs. 6-7 (in particular Fig. 3) , the first joint casing 100 may comprise a first tubular body 130. The first tubular body 130 extends along the axial direction. In the shown example, the first tubular body 130 may be a separate member and can be fixed to the second arm 112 of the first joint casing 100 via screw fasteners.

[0040] As shown in Figs. 3-7, the second joint casing 200 may comprise a second tubular body 210 located at the support side 213. The second tubular body 210 extends along the axial direction. The second tubular body 210 is coaxially arranged with respect to the first tubular body 130 to define a gap therebetween. The plain bearing 120 is received within the gap between the first tubular body 130 and the second tubular body 210.

[0041] In some embodiments, the second tubular body 210 is integrally formed with the second joint casing 200. The second joint casing 200 comprises a body 212 defining an inner chamber in which components for rotating the end flange 300 may be arranged. The second tubular body 210 extends from the body 212 at its support side 213 and defines a channel 215 in communication with the inner chamber. The channel 215 comprises a first axial end adjacent to the body 212 and a second axial end opposite to the first axial end. The first tubular body 130 may be arranged in the channel 215. The plain bearing 120 may be fixed to an inner surface of the second tubular body 210 via an interference fit. The first tubular body 130 is then inserted into an inner portion of the plain bearing 120. During operation, an inner surface of the plain bearing 120 is rotatable with respect to the first tubular body 130.

[0042] In some embodiments, as best shown in Figs. 2-4, 6, and 7, the first tubular body 130 may comprise a lip 132 adjacent to the second axial end of the channel 215. The lip 132 at least partially extends away from the channel 215 in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction. The first tubular body 130 is fixed to the first joint casing 100 via the lip 132, for example using screw fasteners.

[0043] In some embodiments, as best shown in Figs. 7, the first tubular body 130 may comprise a first positioning flange 133 at the second axial end of the channel 215. The first positioning flange 133 extends in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction and is configured to position an axial end of the plain bearing 120. Alternatively, the second tubular body 210 may comprise a positioning flange 213 at the first axial end of the channel 215. The positioning flange 213 extends toward the channel 215 in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction and is configured to position an axial end of the plain bearing 120.

[0044] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 5-7, the tape 144 is fixed to an outer surface of the second tubular body 210. In this way, the tape 144 is exposed during its rotation. The first joint casing 100 further comprises a first recess 1123 adjacent to the outer surface of the second tubular body 210. The scanning head 142 is received in the first recess 1123.

[0045] The optical sensor is very sensitive to pollution. There are some means to protect the optical sensor. In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 2-4, 6, and 7, the first joint casing 100 may further comprise a protection cover 134 to cover a space where the scanning head 142 is located. With the protection cover, foreign matters are prevented from entering the optical sensor via the gaps located near the lip 32.

[0046] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, 6, and 7, the first joint casing 100 may further comprise a third tubular body 1124. The third tubular body 1124 is configured to axially surround the first tubular body 130 and the second tubular body 210. An axial end of the third tubular body 1124 may comprise a second recess 1121, and a seal 150 is received in the second recess 1121 to seal an interface between the first joint casing 100 and the second joint casing 200. In some embodiments, the seal 150 may be a rotary seal which allows relative movement between the second tubular body 210 and the third tubular body 1124. With this arrangement, foreign matters are prevented from entering the optic sensor via the interfaces among the second tubular body 210 and the third tubular body 1124.

[0047] In some embodiments, the channel 215 may be used for receiving components for driving the end flange 300. In some embodiments, the channel 215 is configured to allow passage of cables. For example, the motors and the like for driving the end flange 300 may be received in the inner chamber of the second joint casing and cables may go into the inner chamber of the second joint casing via the channel 215. In some embodiments (not shown) , a shaft may be provided within a hollow inner portion of the plain bearing 120, in particular the hollow inner portion of the first tubular body 130. The shaft is rotatable with respect to the second joint casing 200. In some embodiments, the shaft may be driven by a second belt-transmission arranged within the first joint casing 100.

[0048] The description of the various embodiments of the present invention have been presented for purposes of illustration, but are not intended to be exhaustive or limited to the embodiments disclosed. Many modifications and variations will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the described embodiments. The terminology used herein was chosen to best explain the principles of the embodiments, the practical application or technical improvement over technologies found in the marketplace, or to enable others of ordinary skill in the art to understand the embodiments disclosed herein.
