Abstract

A battery system provides a plurality of smart battery packs, each including a battery management system (BMS) configured to monitor local conditions and detect faults, at least one controllable switching element configured to control electrical connection to external terminals, and galvanically isolated circuitry configured to process at least one shared synchronization signal. The plurality of smart battery packs are configured to autonomously coordinate operation without a centralized host controller by sharing control of the shared synchronization signal such that it does not transition until all smart battery packs indicate readiness. Each smart battery pack is configured to close the controllable switching element in response to transition of the shared synchronization signal with nanosecond-precision timing of 100 nanoseconds or less.
