The method comprises the following steps of: acquiring first application layer address information of the terminal by the home gateway through second application layer address information of the terminal, and forwarding a conversation connecting request from an automatic configuration server to the terminal according to the first application layer address information of the terminal so as to ensure that a conversation connection is established between the terminal and the automatic configuration server; and after the conversation connection is established, forwarding a management message from the automatic configuration server to the terminal so as to ensure that the terminal obtains self management according to the management message. By the method, the home gateway and the network management system, the purpose that the automatic configuration server uniformly manages the terminal through the home gateway based on a TR069 protocol is achieved.
