Abstract

The movement process of water flow on a slope is described with the help of a kinematic wave equation, the kinematic wave equation is approximately solved by an analytical method to obtain the relation between changes in water flow and depth in different positions of the slope with time, and the surface roughness and soil moisture absorption rate are determined based on the change relation and observed data of rainfall. The method for estimating the surface roughness and soil moisture absorption rate of a slope under rainfall conditions is different from previous measurement methods which cause large error and have limitations. By using the method of the invention, as long as there is data of one rainfall, the volume of runoff at the exit is measured and a water balance equation is established based on a relational expression of changes in water flow and depth in different positions of the slope with time, the surface roughness and soil moisture absorption rate can be determined.
