[0030]In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations, measurements, and values describe plants grown in Plaquemine, La., with one plant per one gallon container. Plants used for the description were about 24 weeks old.[0031]Botanical classification: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. [0032]Parentage:[0033]Female or seed parent.—Grey Ghost (not patented).[0034]Male or pollen parent.—Beau Vie (not patented). ‘DUP-ANG’ differs from its seed parent ‘Grey Ghost’ in having an underlapping petal edge which differs in color from the remainder of the petal. The overall effect with respect to the flower circumference is of an alternation between two different colors, rather than concentric rings of color. ‘DUP-ANG’ differs from its pollen parent ‘Beau Vie’ in that, among other things, the underlap color is not repeated along the petal edge. Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of hibiscus plant named ‘DUP-ANG’, characterized by glossy, dark green leaves, sturdy, upright growth, and large flowers having a large red eye zone which is sharply margined against a violet zone which extends to the petal margins, with suffusion of purple pink on the underlapping edge of each petal.

Description

[0001]Latin name of the genus and species: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. [0002]Variety denomination: ‘DUP-ANG’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION[0003]The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of hibiscus, botanically known as Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘DUP-ANG.’[0004]Hibiscus have been the subject of human admiration for centuries. While the ancestry of present rosa-sinensis hybrids is not precisely known, today's hybrids are thought to be the products of interspecific crosses involving Hawaiian, Polynesian and Asian species, among others, some of which may no longer be found in the wild, if they are to be found at all. It is thought that the first hibiscus identified as a rosa-sinensis was a double red form of uncertain origin found in cultivation in China, India and Polynesia, to be later introduced to Hawaii from Polynesia. It is known to have been grown in Europe during the Victorian era. Eventually, it was introduced to the c...
