Abstract
Description
[0001] This application is a divisional application of the Chinese application with application number 201910038656.5 and invention name “Display Device” filed on January 16, 2019. Technical Field
[0002] The embodiments described herein relate to a display device. Background Art
[0003] As display devices for smart phones, tablet computers, car navigation systems, etc., liquid crystal display devices, organic EL display devices, etc. are widely used. For example, a liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal display panel and a backlight device that illuminates the liquid crystal display panel. The backlight device has a housing (or frame) mounted on the liquid crystal display panel and various optical components arranged in the housing. A driver IC is installed near the input terminal of the liquid crystal display panel. In addition, the liquid crystal display panel is bonded to a flexible printed circuit substrate (FPC) and is electrically connected to the driver IC. The FPC extends outward from the liquid crystal display panel, for example, bends toward the bottom side of the housing, and is arranged along the side and back of the housing.
[0004] In recent years, the development of narrow frame display devices has been continuously promoted. For example, the existing driver IC installed on the display panel is removed by mounting the driver IC on the FPC, thereby realizing the narrow frame of the display panel. If it is an FPC (hereinafter referred to as COF) with a driver IC installed, it is necessary to increase the thickness of the substrate base material (for example, polyimide) to improve the substrate strength. Therefore, the repulsive force (elastic recovery force) of COF against bending is stronger than that of ordinary FPC. On the other hand, as the display device becomes thinner, it is required to bend the COF sharply. Therefore, the curvature of the bent portion of the COF becomes larger, and the repulsive force of the COF becomes stronger. In the narrow frame of the display device, it is hoped to suppress the repulsive force acting. Summary of the invention

[0018] (First Embodiment)
[0019] Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the display surface side of the liquid crystal display device according to the first embodiment, Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the back side of the liquid crystal display device, Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of a liquid crystal display device, Figure 4 It is the light source side portion of the liquid crystal display device along Figure 2 A cross-sectional view of line AA.
[0020] The liquid crystal display device 10 can be incorporated into various electronic devices such as smartphones, tablet terminals, mobile phones, notebook PCs, portable game machines, electronic dictionaries, television devices, and car navigation systems for use.
[0021] like Figure 1 , Figure 2 , Figure 3 As shown, the liquid crystal display device 10 includes an active matrix liquid crystal display panel (display panel) 12, a cover panel 14 overlapped with a display surface 12a which is one surface of the display panel 12 and covers the entire display surface 12a, and a backlight unit (backlight device) 20 which is arranged opposite to the back surface which is the other surface of the display panel 12.
[0022] like Figure 3 and Figure 4 As shown, the display panel 12 includes a rectangular plate-shaped first substrate SUB1, a rectangular plate-shaped second substrate SUB2 arranged opposite to the first substrate SUB1, and a liquid crystal layer LQ arranged between the first substrate SUB1 and the second substrate SUB2. The first substrate SUB1 and the second substrate SUB2 are respectively formed of transparent insulating substrates such as glass plates or resin plates. The peripheral edge of the second substrate SUB2 is bonded to the first substrate SUB1 through a sealant SE. A polarizing plate PL2 is attached to the surface of the second substrate SUB2 to form a display surface 12a of the display panel 12. A polarizing plate PL1 is attached to the surface of the first substrate SUB1 (the back side of the display panel 12).
[0023] In the state of looking down at the display surface 12a (referring to the state of viewing the display panel from the normal direction of the surface of the display panel. The same applies below), the display panel 12 has a rectangular display area (active area) DA in the area inside the seal SE. An image is displayed in the display area DA. A rectangular frame-shaped frame area (non-display area) ED is provided around the display area DA. The display panel 12 has a transmissive display function of displaying an image by selectively transmitting light from the backlight unit 20 to the display area DA.
[0024] like Figure 1 , Figure 3 , Figure 4As shown, the cover panel 14 is made of glass or acrylic transparent resin, for example, and is in the shape of a rectangular plate. A frame-shaped light shielding layer RS is formed on the periphery of the back side (the surface on the display panel 12 side, or the surface opposite to the surface facing the observer) of the cover panel 14. The back side (inside) of the cover panel 14 is attached to the polarizing plate PL2 of the display panel 12 by a light-transmitting adhesive AD or a bonding agent.
[0025] like Figure 2 , Figure 3 , Figure 4 As shown, the backlight unit 20 includes a housing 18, a plurality of optical components arranged in the housing 18, and a light source unit 30 for providing light incident on the optical components. In the present embodiment, the housing 18 includes a rectangular bottom plate 17, a plurality of side plates (16a to 16d) erected along the side edges of the bottom plate 17, and a rectangular frame 16 provided in close contact with the side plates. The frame 16 and the side plates constitute a pair of long wall portions (long side plates) 16a and 16b facing each other and a pair of short wall portions (short side plates) 16c and 16d facing each other.
[0026] The frame 16 and the housing 18 may be integrally formed as resin or metal, or one of them may be made of resin and the other of metal. In the present embodiment, the bottom plate 17 and the side plates are formed of metal such as stainless steel (SUS), and the frame 16 is formed of resin. The frame 16 and the side plates are integrated by insert molding or the like.
[0027] It should be noted that, although the frame 16 is formed in a frame shape in this embodiment, a structure in which the frame is provided only on a pair of short sides of the backlight unit 20 may be adopted. Alternatively, a structure in which the frame is provided only on one of the pair of short sides may be adopted.
[0028] like Figure 3 and Figure 4 As shown, the optical components of the backlight unit 20 include a reflective sheet RE placed on the bottom plate 17 in the frame 16, a light guide plate LG, and a plurality of, for example, two, first optical sheets OS1 and a second optical sheet OS2 overlapped and arranged on the light guide plate LG. The reflective sheet RE is placed on the bottom plate 17 to cover almost the entire surface of the bottom plate 17.
[0029] The light guide plate LG is formed by forming a light-transmitting resin, such as an acrylic or silicone resin, into a rectangular shape, and has a rectangular parallelepiped shape. The light guide plate LG has a first main surface S1 that serves as an emission surface, a second main surface S2 on the opposite side of the first main surface S1, and a plurality of side surfaces provided from the first main surface to the second main surface. In the present embodiment, a short side surface of the light guide plate LG is set as an incident surface EF.
[0030] The light guide plate LG is arranged in the frame 16 in a state where the second main surface S2 faces the reflection sheet RE. The incident surface EF of the light guide plate LG faces the side plate 16d of the frame 16 with a gap therebetween.
[0031] According to this embodiment, a diffusion sheet is used as the first optical sheet OS1, and a prism sheet is used as the second optical sheet OS2. The optical sheets OS1 and OS2 are sequentially overlapped and placed on the first main surface S1 of the light guide plate LG. The optical sheets are not limited to two, and three or more or two or less optical sheets may be used.
[0032] like Figure 4 As shown, the first optical sheet OS1 has an end portion (short side end portion) OSE on the light source side. The end portion OSE is configured to protrude from the light guide plate LG toward the light source side beyond the incident surface EF of the light guide plate LG. A black print BP is formed on the upper surface of the end portion OSE (the surface on the display panel 12 side). The black print BP is formed over the entire length of the short side of the first optical sheet OS1. In addition, a strip-shaped shading tape 45 is overlapped and attached to the black print BP. The end portion OSE of the first optical sheet OS1 is shielded by the black print BP and the shading tape 45, thereby suppressing light leakage from the end portion OSE.
[0033] The light source unit (light source device) 30 will be described. Figure 3 and Figure 4 As shown, the light source unit 30 includes a strip-shaped flexible printed circuit substrate (FPC) 32 that functions as a wiring substrate and a plurality of light sources mounted on the FPC 32. The FPC 32 is formed to have a length that is almost equal to the length of the short side of the housing 18. The FPC 32 integrally includes a connection end portion 32c extending from one edge (see Figure 2 , Figure 3 ). The FPC 32 has a plurality of connection pads 41 formed of a conductive layer and wiring (not shown).
[0034] In the present embodiment, a plurality of light emitting elements as point light sources, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) 34, arranged side by side at predetermined intervals are used as light sources. Each LED 34 has a housing (housing) in a substantially rectangular parallelepiped shape. The housing has a light emitting surface 34a from which light is emitted, a mounting surface 34b orthogonal to the light emitting surface 34a, and a first side surface 34c orthogonal to the light emitting surface 34a and opposite to the mounting surface 34b. The mounting surface 34b side is respectively mounted on one surface of the FPC 32. The LED 34 is mounted on the FPC 32 in a state where the end including the light emitting surface 34a protrudes outward from the edge of the FPC 32.
[0035] The light source unit 30 is arranged in the housing 18. A plurality of LEDs 34 are arranged in the housing 18 between the incident surface EF of the light guide plate LG and the short side plate 16d. The light emitting surface 34a of the LED 34 is adjacent to the incident surface EF or abuts against the incident surface EF. The FPC 32 is arranged along the short side plate 16d, and one side edge is placed on the short side plate 16d. The one side edge can also be attached to the frame 16 by an adhesive tape 43 or the like. The connection end 32c of the FPC 32 extends from near one end of the long side direction of the short side plate 16d to the outside of the housing 18 (refer to Figure 2 , Figure 3 ). The connection terminal 74 is provided at an extended end of the connection end portion 32c.
[0036] The first side surface 34c of the LED 34 and the second main surface S2 of the light guide plate LG are basically arranged side by side in the same plane. A fixing tape TP2 is attached to the first side surface 34c and the second main surface S2. The plurality of LEDs 34 are fixed to the light guide plate LG by the fixing tape TP2 and supported at a predetermined position. The fixing tape TP2 can be transparent or can be set to black containing black ink or the like and have a light shielding function.
[0037] like Figure 3 and Figure 4 As shown, the backlight unit 20 has a frame-shaped double-sided tape TP1. The double-sided tape TP1 is attached to the frame 16. The outer periphery of the double-sided tape TP1 coincides with the outer periphery of the housing 18. At the light source side end of the housing 18, the double-sided tape TP1 is attached to the FPC 32 via a spacer SP1, and further attached to the light shielding tape 45.
[0038] The backlight unit 20 constructed in the above manner is mounted on the display panel 12 via the double-sided tape TP1. The inner periphery of the double-sided tape TP1 is adhered to the polarizing plate PL1, and the outer periphery is adhered to the first substrate SUB1 via the spacer SP2. The outer periphery of the backlight unit 20 is consistent with the outer periphery of the first substrate SUB1 except for the light source side. On the light source side, the edge of the backlight unit 20 is located slightly outside the edge of the first substrate SUB1.
[0039] like Figure 2 and Figure 3As shown, the liquid crystal display device 10 has a flexible printed circuit substrate (main FPC, flexible wiring substrate) joined to the display panel 12. An exposed portion that does not overlap with the second substrate SUB2 is provided on one short side of the first substrate SUB1, and the first end of the main FPC23 is joined to the upper surface of the exposed portion. The main FPC23 extends outward from the short side of the display panel 12. The width W1 of the first end of the main FPC23 is smaller than the width W2 of the first substrate SUB1. The main FPC23 extends, for example, in a direction orthogonal to the short side of the first substrate SUB1. The connection end 32c of the aforementioned light source unit 30 does not overlap with the first end of the main FPC23 in the thickness direction, and is located at a position deviated from the main FPC23 in the long side direction of the short side plate 16d.
[0040] On the main FPC 23, semiconductor elements such as a driver IC 24 are mounted as a supply source of signals for driving the display panel 12 (sometimes a structure with a driver IC mounted on the relevant FPC is called a COF (Chip On Flexible printed circuit)). A sub-FPC 25 is connected to the second end of the main FPC 23. The capacitor C1, connectors 26, 27, etc. are mounted on the sub-FPC 25.
[0041] Figure 4 Including a cross-sectional view of the main FPC showing a portion of the main FPC in an enlarged manner. As shown in the figure, the main FPC 23 has a strip-shaped substrate (base layer) 23a, a conductive layer 23b formed on one surface of the substrate 23a and constituting a plurality of wirings, connection pads, etc., and a protective layer 23c stacked on the conductive layer 23b and the substrate 23a and covering the conductive layer 23b. The substrate 23a and the protective layer 23c are formed of synthetic resins such as polyimide and polyurethane, and the conductive layer 23b is formed of a conductive metal layer such as copper foil. The layer thickness of the main FPC 23 sometimes varies depending on the position. At the thickest position, for example, the thickness of the substrate is about 35μm and the overall layer thickness is about 52μm.
[0042] like Figure 2 and Figure 4 As shown, the main FPC 23 and the sub-FPC 25 are folded back along the short side edge of the first substrate SUB1 and overlapped on the bottom plate 17 of the backlight unit 20. Similarly, the connection end 32c of the light source unit 30 is folded back along the short side edge of the substrate SUB1 and faces the bottom plate 17 of the housing 18. The connection terminal of the connection end 32c is connected to the connector 27 on the sub-FPC 25.
[0043] like Figure 4As shown, the conductive layer 23b and the protective layer 23c of the main FPC23 are arranged in a relative orientation to the display panel 12 and the outer surface of the housing. A plurality of connection terminals 23d formed by a portion of the conductive layer 23b are provided at the first end of the main FPC23. By thermally pressing the first end of the main FPC23 to the first substrate SUB1, the plurality of connection terminals 23d are electrically connected to a plurality of wirings or terminals of the first substrate SUB1, respectively. The driver IC24 is mounted on the protective layer 23c side and is electrically connected to the wiring of the main FPC23 via an opening or connection pad not shown in the figure provided in the protective layer 23c. A plurality of connection terminals not shown in the figure are provided at the second end of the main FPC23, which are formed by a portion of the conductive layer 23b. By thermally pressing the second end to the sub-FPC25, the plurality of connection terminals are electrically connected to the sub-FPC25.
[0044] In the present embodiment, the adhesive 50 is filled between the main FPC 23 and the outer surface of the housing 18. The main FPC 23 is bonded to the edge of the first substrate SUB1, the outer surface of the side plate 16d of the housing 18, and the outer surface of the bottom plate 17 by the adhesive 50, thereby maintaining the bent state. It should be noted that, in view of the fact that display devices have been significantly thinned in recent years, in the present embodiment, the state of bending the main FPC 23 along the housing 18 can be regarded as the state of bending the main FPC 23 along the housing 18. Therefore, in the present embodiment, "bending" also includes a bending state in which the object is bent, and similarly, "bending" also includes a state of bending with a curvature of a magnitude that can be regarded as bending.
[0045] The adhesive 50 is filled at least between the bent portion of the main FPC 23 and the outer surface of the housing 18. More preferably, it is also filled between the area near the bent portion and the outer surface of the housing 18. In the present embodiment, the adhesive 50 is filled between the main FPC 23 and the outer surface of the housing 18 in a manner that covers the corner of the joint portion of the base end portion of the bottom plate 17 and the side plate 16d of the housing 18. Furthermore, in a plan view, the adhesive 50 is filled to the area opposite to a portion of the LED 34 across the bottom plate 17.
[0046] The thickness of the adhesive 50 varies depending on the degree of bending of the main FPC 23. In this embodiment, the thickness of the adhesive 50 between the main FPC 23 and the bottom plate 17 is about 50 μm, and the thickness of the adhesive 50 between the main FPC 23 and the side plate 16 d is about 300 μm.
[0047] In one example, as the adhesive 50, a moisture-curing adhesive that cures due to moisture, such as polyurethane (PUR), is used. The adhesive 50 preferably has a hardness equal to or higher than the hardness of the base material 23a of the main FPC 23 by curing. In addition, for example, according to a rebound hardness test, the cured adhesive 50 has a hardness of about D10 to 50. It should be noted that the hardness test refers to a test performed by a D-type hardness meter defined in JIS_K_6253.
[0048] The cured adhesive 50 can integrate the main FPC 23 , the backlight unit 20 , and the display panel 12 , thereby reducing the repulsive force of the main FPC 23 caused by bending, and reliably maintaining the bent state of the main FPC 23 .
[0049] An example of the bonding method is described below. Figure 5 As shown in FIG. 1 , in the state where the main FPC 23 is unfolded, a predetermined amount of adhesive 50 is applied to the protective layer side of the first end portion. In this embodiment, the adhesive 50 is applied over the entire width of the main FPC 23. Next, as shown in FIG. Figure 5 As shown by the arrow in FIG. 1 , the main FPC 23 is folded back to the bottom plate 17 side of the housing 18 and overlapped with the bottom plate 17. Figure 4 As shown, the adhesive 50 is pressed by the main FPC 23 to spread and fill seamlessly between the protective layer 23c of the main FPC 23, the edge of the first substrate SUB1, the outer surface of the side plate 16d of the housing 18, and the outer surface of the bottom plate 17. The main FPC 23 is bent by a suitable clamp such as a clip, and is placed for a predetermined time, for example, about 1 hour, while maintaining the bent state to cure the adhesive 50. By curing the adhesive 50, the main FPC 23, the adhesive 50, the housing 18, and the display panel 12 are integrally structured, and the main FPC 23 is maintained in a bent state. After curing, the bonding operation is completed by removing the clamp.
[0050] According to the liquid crystal display device 10 of the present embodiment constructed in the above manner, the main FPC 23 extending from the display panel 12 is folded back toward the bottom plate 17 along the side plate 16d of the housing 18, thereby becoming a member having a bent portion. Then, the main FPC 23 is adhered to the outer surface of the housing 18 by the adhesive 50 filled between the bent portion and the outer surface of the housing 18. In other words, by filling the adhesive 50, the main FPC 23 in a partially bent state is integrated with the housing 18 and the display panel 12. Since the adhesive force of the adhesive 50 is greater than the repulsive force (elastic restoring force) generated in the main FPC 23 due to bending, the repulsive force can be suppressed by the adhesive 50. In addition, since the bent posture of the main FPC 23 is maintained for a long time, the repulsive force decreases or disappears over time, and as a result, the bent state of the main FPC 23 can be maintained stably and for a long time. In addition, since the repulsive force can be suppressed by the adhesive force of the adhesive 50 , the main FPC 23 can be bent within an acceptable steepness (the main FPC can be bent with a large curvature).
[0051] In addition, the protective layer 23c of the main FPC 23 is arranged in a state opposite to the outer surface of the housing 18, and an adhesive 50 is filled between the protective layer 23c and the outer surface of the housing 18. Therefore, the protective layer 23c and the conductive layer 23b of the main FPC 23 do not directly contact the corners of the housing 18 or the corners of the display panel 12. Therefore, even when the main FPC 23 is sharply bent, the wiring of the main FPC 23 caused by contact with the above-mentioned corners can be prevented from being disconnected.
[0052] As described above, according to the first embodiment, the repulsive force of the flexible wiring board in the bent state can be sufficiently reduced, and the posture of the flexible wiring board can be stably maintained.
[0053] It should be noted that in the first embodiment, the display panel of the display device uses a liquid crystal display panel 12, but it is not limited to this, and an organic EL display panel can also be used. In this case, a backlight unit is not required, and the housing 18 and the bottom plate 17 as a part of the housing 18 can be arranged on the back side of the organic EL display panel as a support. In addition, the adhesive 50 is not limited to a moisture-curing adhesive, and any other adhesive can be used as long as it meets the required conditions.
[0054] It should be noted that in the other embodiments described below, the same reference numerals are used for the same parts as those in the first embodiment, and their detailed description is omitted or simplified, and the parts different from the first embodiment are mainly described in detail.
[0055] (Second Embodiment)
[0056] Figure 61 is a plan view schematically showing a state in which a main FPC of a liquid crystal display device according to the second embodiment is unfolded. Figure 7 It is a cross-sectional view of a portion on the light source side of a liquid crystal display device according to a second embodiment.
[0057] like Figure 6 As shown, according to the second embodiment, the connection end portion 32c of the light source device 30 is arranged to be offset from one end of the side plate 16d of the housing 18 toward the center. As a result, a portion of the connection end portion 32c is located at a position overlapping with one end of the main FPC 23 in the thickness direction. In this case, as shown in FIG. Figure 6 As shown by the middle dotted line, the adhesive 50 is applied to one end of the main FPC 23 , and a part of it is overlapped and applied to the connection end 32 c .
[0058] like Figure 7 As shown, the main FPC 23 and the connection end 32c are folded back toward the bottom plate 17 along the side plate 16d of the housing 18. The adhesive 50 is filled between the main FPC 23 and the outer surface of the housing 18. The main FPC 23 is adhered to the edge of the first substrate SUB1, the outer surface of the side plate 16d of the housing 18, and the outer surface of the bottom plate 17 by the adhesive 50, and is maintained in a bent state or a curved state. The connection end 32c is arranged between the main FPC 23 and the outer surface of the housing 18 in a bent state, and is further buried in the adhesive 50. That is, the adhesive 50 is filled between the connection end 32c and the main FPC 23 and between the connection end 32c and the outer surface of the housing 18. As a result, the connection end 32c is adhered to the outer surface of the side plate 16d of the housing 18 and the outer surface of the bottom plate 17 by the adhesive 50, and is maintained in a bent state or a curved state.
[0059] Note that, as in the first embodiment, a moisture-curing adhesive is used as the adhesive 50. In the second embodiment, the other structures of the liquid crystal display device are the same as those of the liquid crystal display device of the first embodiment described above.
[0060] According to the second embodiment configured as above, the main FPC 23 and the connection end 32c of the light source device 30 can be stably maintained in their bent state by the adhesive 50. In the second embodiment, the same effects as those of the first embodiment can be obtained.
[0061] (First Modification)
[0062] In the first and second embodiments, the adhesive 50 is filled over the entire length of the main FPC 23 in the width direction, but the present invention is not limited thereto. Figure 8As shown, the adhesive 50 may be intermittently filled at a plurality of locations in the width direction of the main FPC 23. The adhesive 50 may be selectively filled at locations where the repulsive force of the main FPC 23 is particularly strong.
[0063] Although the embodiments of the present invention have been described, the embodiments are only presented as examples and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention. These new embodiments and modifications can be implemented in various other ways, and various omissions, substitutions, and changes can be made without departing from the scope of the purpose of the invention. The embodiments and their modifications are included in the scope and purpose of the invention, and are included in the invention described in the claims and their equivalents.
[0064] All structures that can be implemented by those skilled in the art based on the above-mentioned structures as embodiments of the present invention and appropriately designed and modified, as long as they include the main purpose of the present invention, also belong to the scope of the present invention.
