Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present technology generally relates to heat exchanger assemblies, such as dry cooler assemblies. Background Art
[0002] Data centers store large amounts of heat-generating electronic equipment. In order to condition and dissipate the heat generated by the electronic equipment, data centers typically implement a sizable thermal management system, such as a dry cooler assembly.
[0003] A dry cooler assembly typically includes a heat exchanger and a fan for cooling heated fluid from a data center. Specifically, a heated fluid (e.g., heated water) is received by the heat exchanger of the dry cooler assembly, where the fluid transfers heat to ambient air drawn in by the fan, thereby cooling the fluid. The heated air is then exhausted, and the now cooled fluid is recirculated back into the data center.
[0004] Dry cooler assemblies are typically large and heavy, which imposes limitations on transportation and installation. Some dry cooler assemblies may need to be shipped to the data center in a shipping container. Due to the size and weight, the shipping of dry cooler assemblies typically results in large shipping costs and a large carbon footprint. Furthermore, during installation, due to the size and weight of the dry cooler assemblies, additional steps are required to provide adequate support. For example, a complex concrete foundation is poured prior to installation.
[0005]
[0006] Therefore, a dry cooler assembly is desired that overcomes at least some of the above-mentioned problems. Summary of the invention

[0074] Moreover, all statements herein reciting principles, aspects, and implementations of the technology, as well as specific examples thereof, are intended to encompass both structural and functional equivalents thereof, whether currently known or developed in the future.
[0075] With these basic principles in place, we will now consider some non-limiting examples to illustrate various implementations of aspects of the present disclosure.
[0076] In broad aspects, a dry cooler assembly 10 is provided that is modular and can be assembled into an assembled configuration for use thereof and that can also be disassembled to a disassembled configuration, such as for shipping and storage.
[0077] Reference Figure 1 , the dry cooler assembly 10 is depicted in an assembled configuration. The dry cooler assembly 10 includes at least one heat exchanger 12 (such as an air to liquid heat exchanger) configured to receive a heated fluid (e.g., water) from a heat source such as a heat generating component of a data center. The dry cooler assembly 10 also includes at least one fan 14 configured to draw ambient air into the dry cooler assembly 10. The cold ambient air moves through the at least one heat exchanger 12, and heat is transferred from the heated fluid to the cold ambient air. The now heated ambient air is exhausted from the dry cooler assembly 10 by the fan 14, and the cooled fluid is returned to the data center and the above process is repeated. It is contemplated that, optionally, the dry cooler assembly 10 may include at least one cooling pad 16 and a reservoir 18. The cooling pad 16 and the reservoir 18 are disposed on the exterior face of the heat exchanger 12. The reservoir 18 contains a cooling fluid (e.g., water) that is distributed across the cooling pad 16, providing a cold surface. Ambient air is drawn across the cool surface of the cooling pad 16 , thereby cooling the ambient air before it comes into contact with the heat exchanger 12 .
[0078] like Figure 1As depicted, the dry cooler assembly 10 includes two heat exchangers 12 that are positioned upright and facing each other in a spaced-apart configuration. The dry cooler assembly 10 also includes two cooling pads 16 and two reservoirs 18. Each of the two cooling pads 16 is positioned on the outwardly facing side of the heat exchanger 12 so that ambient air flows through the cooling pads 16 before flowing through the heat exchanger 12. Each of the two reservoirs 18 is disposed below the corresponding cooling pad 16. The two reservoirs 18 distribute the fluid across the surface of their corresponding cooling pads 16. In some embodiments, the distributed fluid is received and circulated by the reservoir 18, forming a closed feedback loop. In some embodiments, the cooling pad 16 and the reservoir 18 may be omitted. In some embodiments, the closed feedback loop may include a filter and a pump for conveying the circulating distributed fluid.
[0079] from Figure 2 As best seen, the heat exchanger 12, the cooling pad 16, and the reservoir 18 are supported by a respective frame 102. Each frame 102 has two substantially upright portions 136 that are spaced apart from one another and connected by a substantially horizontal portion 138. In some embodiments, each frame 102 is configured to accommodate the heat exchanger 12 between the two substantially upright portions 136. In some embodiments, the heat exchanger 12 is removably connected to the inner side of the respective frame 102. The cooling pad 16 and the reservoir 18 are removably connected to the outer side of the respective frame 102. In other words, each frame 102 is sandwiched between the heat exchanger 12 and the cooling pad 16 and the reservoir 18. In other embodiments, each frame 102 may support the respective heat exchanger 12 in any other manner. The frames 102 will be described in further detail below.
[0080] Specific reference Figure 2, at least one base component is also provided, which is used to support the frame 102 of the dry cooler assembly 10. The base component includes two base members 106. When in use, each base member 106 is configured to be fixed to a support surface, such as a base plate, a concrete slab or a metal pad, on which the dry cooler assembly 10 will be assembled. In the assembled structure of the dry cooler assembly 10, the base members 106 are positioned to be spaced apart from each other and parallel to each other. Each frame 102 is connected to the respective ends of the two base members 106, so that when assembled, the heat exchanger 12 is positioned orthogonal to the base members 106. One end of each of the base members 106 receives a portion of one of the frames 102, and the opposite end of the base member 106 receives a portion of the other frame 102. The substantially upright portion 136 of the frame 102 extends upward in a manner orthogonal to the base member 106. The dry cooler assembly 10, when assembled, is substantially cuboid in configuration, wherein four edges are defined by the substantially upright portion 136 of the frame 102. The base member 106 will be described in further detail below.
[0081] The dry cooler assembly 10 also includes a top member 104 that is removably connected to the top portion of each frame in the frame 102 and extends therebetween. It can be said that the top member 104 is supported by the frame 102. In an alternative implementation, the dry cooler assembly 10 includes a mounting structure (e.g., a frame) that is operably connected to the top member 104, the frame 102, and the base member 106. In this alternative implementation, the top member 104 is therefore supported by the mounting structure rather than the frame 102. The top member 104 houses the fan 14. The fan 14 is configured to draw ambient air from outside the dry cooler assembly 10, the ambient air passes through the cooling pad 16-where the ambient air is cooled-and then enters the heat exchanger 12. The ambient air is warmed as it passes through the heat exchanger 12 and is ultimately exhausted from the dry cooler assembly 10 by the fan 14. Although the top member 104 is depicted as accommodating four fans 14, the number of fans 14 is not particularly limited, and the top member 104 may support any number of fans. The top member will be described in further detail below.
[0082] The dry cooler assembly 10 may also include at least one end plate 108. In some embodiments, the dry cooler assembly 10 includes two end plates 108 disposed at either end of the dry cooler assembly 10 ( Figure 1108). Each end plate 108 is removably connected to two frames 102 and extends laterally between the two frames 102. Each end plate 108 is removably connected to one of the base members 106 and extends vertically between the base members. In the assembled configuration, each end plate 108 is orthogonal to the heat exchanger 12.
[0083] The frame 102, base member 106, top member 104, and optional end panels 108 are detachably attached together and may be considered modules of the dry cooler assembly 10. As previously described, the modular nature of the dry cooler assembly 10 allows the dry cooler assembly 10 to be assembled in a configuration such as Figure 1 depicted) and disassembled configuration (as Figure 3 The dry cooler assembly 10 in the disassembled configuration may be considered a kit of parts of the dry cooler assembly 10 .
[0084] Reference Figure 3 , the disassembled configuration will now be described in detail. In the disassembled configuration of the dry cooler assembly 10, each of the frame 102, the base member 106, and the top member 104 are disengaged and separated from each other. Each frame 102 has a corresponding heat exchanger 12, a cooling pad 16, and a reservoir 18, which are removably connected to the frame 102. The top member 104 includes a fan 14, which is attached to the top member 104.
[0085] Packing the various components of the dry cooler assembly 10 into a disassembled configuration can provide certain space-saving efficiencies. The frames 102 (including the heat exchanger 12, the cooling pad 16, and the reservoir 18) are positioned upright and opposite to each other. The frames 102 are positioned so that the heat exchanger 12 faces inward and toward each other. The top member 104 (including the fan 14) is disposed between the two frames 102 and is also in an upright position. In some embodiments, the top member 104 is removably coupled to one or more of the frames 102, such as by extending one or more fasteners (e.g., screws or bolts) through the aligned openings of each of the frames 102 and the top member 104. Fasteners are removably coupled to one or more frames. In the disassembled configuration, the reservoir 18 is empty and can be used to accommodate the base member 106. In some embodiments, each reservoir 18 can accommodate one base member 106. Alternatively, one of the reservoirs 18 can accommodate two base members 106. The end panels 108 may be slotted between the top member 104 and an opposing frame 102, i.e., a frame 102 to which the top member 104 is not secured (not shown). With this arrangement, packaging efficiencies may be achieved by reducing or minimizing the space between the various components. In certain embodiments, the dry cooler assembly 10 in the disassembled configuration is sized and shaped to be received in a shipping container.
[0086] It will be understood that the above-described arrangement of the disassembled configuration is exemplary, and alternative arrangements of the components of the dry cooler assembly 10 are possible. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the top member 104 may be removably connected to one of the heat exchangers 12. In a further alternative embodiment, the top member 104 may be disposed on one of the outer sides of the frame 102. That is, the top member 104 may be removably coupled to one of the cooling pad 16 and the associated reservoir 18. Additionally, it is contemplated that in another embodiment, the base member 106 may be removably connected to any one or a combination of the frame 102, the heat exchanger 12, the cooling pad 16, the reservoir 18, and the top member 104. In a further alternative embodiment, the end plate 106 may be configured to be removably connected to any one or a combination of the frame 102, the heat exchanger 12, the cooling pad 16, the reservoir 18, and the top member 104. It is also contemplated that alternative means may be used to removably connect the respective components, such as using ropes or winch straps to secure the components together.
[0087] The modular nature of the dry cooler assembly 10 allows different components to be packed more tightly together, thereby reducing the footprint of the packaged dry cooler assembly 10 in the disassembled configuration. In other words, the footprint of the dry cooler assembly 10 in the disassembled configuration is smaller than the footprint of the dry cooler assembly 10 in the assembled configuration. In the disassembled configuration, this reduced footprint can increase storage efficiency and capacity within the storage facility. Additionally, the reduced footprint can allow multiple dry cooler assemblies 10 to be accommodated in a single shipping container 200 and shipped, thereby reducing the number of shipments required, ultimately reducing shipping costs, and reducing the carbon footprint associated with the shipping of the dry cooler assembly 10.
[0088] Reference Figure 4 , the dry cooler assembly 10 in a disassembled configuration is shown housed in a shipping container shell 200. In some embodiments, the disassembled configuration of the dry cooler assembly 10 is sized to fit within the shipping container 200. That is, the height of the disassembled configuration is less than the interior height of the shipping container 200, and the width of the disassembled configuration is less than the interior width of the shipping container 200. In a specific embodiment, the height of the disassembled dry cooler assembly 10 may be between 2.0m and 2.5m, such as 2.3m, and the width of the disassembled dry cooler assembly 10 may be between 2.0m and 2.5m, such as 2.1m.
[0089] In some embodiments, the length of the disassembled dry cooler assembly 10 allows multiple disassembled dry cooler assemblies 10 to be accommodated in a single shipping container 200. In a specific embodiment, the length of the disassembled dry cooler assembly 10 can be between 3.0m and 4.0m, such as 3.6m. Figure 5 As depicted, the shipping container 200 houses three groups 202 of disassembled dry cooler assemblies 10 disposed along the length of the shipping container 200. The groups 202 of disassembled dry cooler assemblies 10 are aligned longitudinally in the shipping container 200. Each disassembled dry cooler assembly 10 is removably secured to an interior portion of the shipping container 200. For example, the shipping container 200 may include a channel configured to receive and secure a portion of the frame 102. Alternatively, ropes or winch straps may be used to secure various components of the dry cooler assembly 10 to components (e.g., hooks or loops) disposed within the shipping container 200.
[0090] Reference Figures 6 to 16, the components of the dry cooler assembly 10 will now be described in detail. As previously described, the dry cooler assembly 10 includes a top member 104 (including the fan 14) that is disposed above and extends between two frames 102 (where each frame 102 supports a heat exchanger 12, a cooling pad 16, and a reservoir 18). Each frame 102 is supported by two base members 106 secured to a support surface.
[0091] Reference Figures 6 to 8 , the base member 106 will now be described in detail. The two base members 106 are identical to each other, so the base member 106 will be extensively referenced below. The base member 106 includes an elongated body having a channel 110 defined in the elongated body, which extends longitudinally along the length of the base member 106. The channel 110 is defined by a channel wall 112 and is configured to receive the lower portion 139 (described below) of each frame in the frame 102 when in an assembled configuration. The channel 110 has an open top and an open bottom. Therefore, the bottom face of the frame 102 is in contact with the support surface when in use. Therefore, the weight of the frame 102 (including the heat exchanger 12, the cooling pad-shaped member 16 and the storage 18) is supported by the support surface itself. In some embodiments, the channel wall 112 of the base member 106 forms at least part of the side wall 122 of the base member 106.
[0092] Each side wall 122 of the base member 106 is L-shaped and provides a bottom face 114 of the base member 106 that will contact the support surface. The bottom face 114 is orthogonal to the channel wall 112. An opening 116 is provided in the bottom face 114 of the base member 106 for receiving a fastener such as a screw or bolt to connect the base member 106 to the support surface. The bottom face 114 and opening 116 of the base member 106 can simplify the installation of the dry cooler assembly 10, for example, by eliminating the need to form a complex concrete structure to secure the dry cooler assembly 10 to the support surface.
[0093] The channel wall 112 has at least one flared upper portion 118 configured to guide the lower portion 139 of the frame 102 into the channel 110 during installation. Figure 6 and Figure 7 , the flared upper portion 118 extends from the upper portion of each of the channel walls 112. The flared upper portions 118 are angled outwardly, away from each other and the channel 110. In some embodiments, the flared upper portions 118 are angled relative to the channel walls 112 ( Figure 8The flared upper portion 118 is angled outwardly at 30° to 60° (indicated by α in FIG. 1 ). In some embodiments, the flared upper portion 118 can extend to 40% to 100% of the length of the lower portion 139 of the frame 102 received by the channel 110 (specifically, the foot member 140 described in further detail below). The flared upper portion 118 is disposed at the end region 117 of the elongated body of the base member 106. In other embodiments, instead of having both channel walls 112 have the flared upper portion 118, the flared upper portion 118 can be disposed on only one channel wall 112.
[0094] from Figure 6 and Fig.14 As can be best seen in FIG. 1 , the flared upper portion 118 does not extend continuously along the end region 117 of the base member 106. At least one recessed portion 120 is provided for receiving the lower portion 139 of the frame 102 in an assembled configuration (described in detail below). Figure 6 , the base member 106 includes two recessed portions 120 disposed at either end region 117 of the base member 106. The recessed portions 120 may be defined in one or more of the channel walls 112 and / or one or more of the flared upper portions 118.
[0095] like Figure 6 , Fig. 9 and Fig.10 As depicted, the elongated body of the base member 106 also includes at least one abutment member 124 positioned at the central region 119 of the base member 106. When the lower portion of the frame 102 is received in the channel 110, the abutment member 124 contacts the end of the lower portion of the frame (from the bottom). Fig.14 106). Thus, when the frames 102 are connected to the base member 106, the abutment members 124 help to position the two frames 102 at a predetermined distance from each other. In other words, the abutment members 124 can act as spacers for positioning the two frames 102. In some embodiments, the abutment members 124 are sized to be able to be disposed within the channel 110. The abutment members 124 are centrally disposed in the channel 110. The abutment members 124 are cubic in shape and have a rectangular cross-section when viewed in a cross section orthogonal to the longitudinal axis of the abutment members 124. It is contemplated that the abutment members 124 may also include other geometric shapes. For example, the abutment members 124 may have a trapezoidal cross-sectional profile. In some embodiments, the abutment members 124 may be formed integrally with the base member 106, or may be formed separately and connected to the base member.
[0096] It will be appreciated that the configuration of the base member 106 may vary from that described herein and depicted in the figures. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the channel 110 may have a closed bottom and an open top.
[0097] It is contemplated that the channel 110 may have different geometric shapes. For example, in alternative embodiments, the channel 110 may be pawn-shaped, V-shaped, or any other suitable geometric shape to allow interlocking with the complementary shaped lower portion 139 of the frame 102.
[0098] It is contemplated that the base member 106 may include any number of flared upper portions 118. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the base member 106 may include a single flared upper portion 118 that extends the entire length of the channel wall 112. In another embodiment, the flared upper portion 118 may begin at a bottom portion of the channel wall 112. For example, the flared upper portion 118 may begin at a bottom edge of the channel wall 112.
[0099] It is also contemplated that the base member 106 may include a plurality of abutment members 124 that may be disposed at different locations along the channel 110. For example, the base member 106 may include two abutment members 124, wherein each abutment member 124 is disposed at an end region of each of the flared upper portions 118. In further alternative embodiments, the abutment members 124 may be configured to be positioned above the channel 110 rather than within the channel 110. In another embodiment, the abutment members 124 may be omitted.
[0100] In alternative embodiments, the base member 106 may include any number of recessed portions 120. Furthermore, in alternative embodiments, the recessed portions 120 may extend downwardly to the entire height of the channel wall 112, terminating at the bottom edge of the channel wall 112.
[0101] Reference Fig. 9 and Fig.10, the dry cooler assembly 10 includes at least one cable and conduit management system 141. The cable and conduit management system 141 includes an annular wire arrangement 126 that is connectable to the base member 106 and is configured to receive an electrical circuit and a liquid circuit. In certain embodiments, the annular wire arrangement 126 includes a fixture 128, wherein a plurality of rings 130 are mounted to the fixture 128 for receiving an electrical circuit and / or a liquid circuit. In this non-limiting embodiment, the annular wire arrangement 126 includes two levels of rings 130 distributed longitudinally along the fixture 128. In use, each ring 130 can surround and secure an electrical bus, wire, conduit, or any other component of an electrical circuit and / or a liquid circuit to the fixture 128. The fixture 128 can be formed integrally with the base member 106, or the fixture 128 can be formed separately from the base member 106 and can be connected to the base member 106 by any means, such as via welding, adhesive, bolts or screws, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the fixture 128 is connected to one of the channel walls 112 of the base member 106. Alternatively, the fixture 128 can be connected to the bottom surface 114 of the base member 106. The annular wire arrangement 126 extends longitudinally along the base member 106 and is positioned at the central region 119 of the base member 106 ( Fig.10 ). However, it is contemplated that the annular wire arrangement 126 may be disposed anywhere along the base member 106. It should be understood that one or both base members 106 may include the annular wire arrangement 126. It is also contemplated that the annular wire arrangement 126 may be disposed on either of the frames 102.
[0102] Reference Fig.11 and Fig.12 In some embodiments, the cable and conduit management system 141 also includes an insert 132 that can be positioned between the inner sides 143 of the two frames 102 and forms a passage for receiving electrical circuits and / or liquid circuits. In the assembled configuration, the passage is defined by the insert 132 and the support surface that supports the dry cooler assembly 10. The insert 132 extends the entire distance between the two base members 106, wherein the outer surface 134 of the insert 132 acts as the floor of the assembled dry cooler assembly 10. In alternative embodiments, the insert 132 may not extend the entire space between the base members 106. Alternatively, the insert 132 may cover only a portion, forming a partial floor of the assembled dry cooler assembly 10.
[0103] Although the cable and conduit management system 141 has been described as including both the annular wire arrangement 126 and the insert 132, it is understood that the cable and conduit management system 141 may include only the annular wire arrangement 126 or only the insert 132. In addition, the cable and conduit management system 141 of the assembled dry cooler assembly 10 may be configured to receive additional electrical and / or liquid circuits. That is, the cable and conduit management system 141 may be configured to receive electrical and / or liquid circuits from additional dry cooler assemblies 10, thereby allowing additional dry cooler assemblies 10 to be easily installed in a back-to-back manner.
[0104] Reference Figures 11 to 14 , the frame 102 will now be described in detail. The two frames 102 are similar (mirror images of each other when assembled), and therefore, frame 102 will be extensively referenced below. Frame 102 includes a body portion 137 for supporting the heat exchanger 12, the cooling pad 16, and the reservoir 18. The body portion 137 is composed of two upwardly extending arms 136 and a laterally extending arm 138. The laterally extending arm 138 connects the upper portion of each of the upwardly extending arms 136. As previously described, the frame 102 is sandwiched between the heat exchanger 12 and the cooling pad 16 and the reservoir 18 (in both the assembled configuration and the disassembled configuration). More specifically, the upwardly extending arm 136 and the laterally extending arm 138 are sandwiched between the heat exchanger 120 and the cooling pad 16 and the reservoir 18 (as Figure 1 , Figure 3 and Figure 4 can be seen).
[0105] It is contemplated that the frame 102 may include any number of the upwardly extending arms 136 and the laterally extending arms 138. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the frame 102 may include an additional upwardly extending arm and an additional laterally extending arm, the additional upwardly extending arm being centrally disposed and the additional laterally extending arm connecting the lower portion of the frame 102 to additionally support the heat exchanger 12, the cooling pad 16, and the reservoir 18.
[0106] As previously described, the frame 102 includes a lower portion 139 that is configured to be received by the channel 110 of the base member 106. The lower portion 139 of the frame 102 has at least one foot member 140. Fig.13 , the frame 102 includes two standoffs 140 spaced apart from each other, wherein each standoff 140 is located at either end of the frame 102. The standoffs 140 are sized to be received by the channel 110 in the assembled configuration. When the standoffs 140 are disposed in the channel 110, one end 142 of the standoffs 140 contacts the abutment member 124 ( Fig.14).
[0107] Each foot member 140 is positioned transverse to the plane formed by the body portion 137 of the frame 102. Fig.13 As depicted, the foot members 140 are positioned orthogonal to a plane formed by the body portion 137 of the frame 102 such that each foot member 140 extends away from an inner side 143 of the body portion 137. In some embodiments, the foot members 140 also extend away from an outer side 145 of the body portion 137. At each end of the frame 102, the foot members 140 are positioned below the upwardly extending arms 136. In some embodiments, the upwardly extending arms 136 are disposed offset from a midpoint of the foot members 140.
[0108] The channel 110 of each base member 106 receives one foot member 140 from each frame 102. Specifically, one foot member 140 from one frame 102 and one foot member 140 from another frame 102 are disposed in the channel 110 of each base member 106 such that the inner side 143 of each of the frames 102 faces each other in the assembled configuration. Each end 142 of each foot member 140 of the frame 102 abuts against the abutment member 124, separating the two frames 102 into a spaced-apart configuration when assembled. Each foot member 140 can be secured to the base member 106 via fasteners such as screws. For example, each foot member 140 can define an opening that aligns with an opening defined in a corresponding base member 106 so that a screw can be inserted therein. In a specific embodiment, the base member 106 includes an opening 115 (at Fig. 9 , Fig.10 and Fig.14 As can be seen in the figure, these openings are aligned with the openings provided on the support member 140 and the screws can be inserted therein.
[0109] Reference Fig.13 , the lower portion 139 of the frame 102 also includes at least one support member 144. The frame 102 includes two support members 144, each extending between two foot members 140, providing a bottom surface for supporting the heat exchanger 12 and the cooling pad 16 and the reservoir 18 on either side of the frame 102. In some embodiments, the support members 144 extend orthogonally to the foot members 140 and parallel to the laterally extending arms 138. The support members 144 are positioned to be spaced apart from each other and laterally offset from the laterally extending arms 138. In other words, when viewed from the top, the laterally extending arms 138 are located between the support members 144.
[0110] Reference Fig.14, in the assembled configuration, one of the support members 144 is received by the recessed portion 120 of the base member 106. The other support member 144 abuts against the end of the base member 106. It is contemplated that in an alternative embodiment, the base member 106 includes two recessed portions 120, which are disposed at each end region of the base member 106, such that each of the support members 144 is received by a complementary recessed portion 120.
[0111] In alternative embodiments, the support member 144 may not extend the entire distance between the two base members 106. For example, the support member 144 may extend from the foot member 140 and terminate before the centerline of the frame 102. Similarly, the support member 144 may extend a distance away from the center point of the frame 102 and terminate before the foot member 140 of the frame 102. In further alternative embodiments, the support member 144 may be omitted.
[0112] like Fig.13 As depicted, in certain embodiments, the lower portion 139 of the frame 102 may also include at least one additional support beam 146 configured to contact a surface and support a portion of the weight of the assembled dry cooler assembly 10. The frame 102 includes two support beams 146 that are positioned spaced apart from each other and orthogonal to the support member 144.
[0113] The frame 102 includes a receiving portion 147 for receiving a fork of a forklift. In some embodiments, the additional support beam 146 includes a receiving portion 147. For example, the additional support beam 146 is hollow and forms a slot 147 sized to receive a fork.
[0114] It is contemplated that any number of additional support beams 146 may be used and positioned in different configurations to provide support to the assembled dry cooler assembly 10. Furthermore, it is contemplated that in some embodiments, additional support beams 146 may be omitted.
[0115] like Fig.11 As depicted, one of the support members 144 provides an attachment surface for the insert 132. In certain embodiments, the insert 132 is connected to the additional support beams 146. Specifically, the insert 132 is connected to the top surface of one or both of the support beams 146. It is contemplated that in alternative embodiments, the insert 132 may be attached to any one or a combination of the support members 144 and / or the additional support beams 146.
[0116] In some embodiments, the additional support beams 146 may provide an attachment surface for additional wire loop arrangements 126. For example, the cable and conduit management system 126 may include four wire loop arrangements 126. Four fixtures 128 may be positioned along the length of the assembled dry cooler assembly 10 and disposed below the insert 132. The first and last of the wire loop arrangements 126 may be connected to the base member 106, respectively, while the other two wire loop arrangements 126 may be attached to the additional support beams 146 of each of the frames 102. Alternatively, the additional wire loop arrangements 126 may be connected to one or both of the support members 144, or to a combination of the support members 144 and the additional support beams 146.
[0117] All components of the frame 102 can be connected to each other to form a unitary piece. In some embodiments, the foot member 140, the upwardly extending arm 136, the laterally extending arm 138, the support member 144, and the additional support beam 146 can be removably connected to each other using bolts or screws. In alternative embodiments, the components can be fixed to each other via welding. In other alternative embodiments, a combination of fasteners such as bolts, screws, and / or welding can be used to fix the components to each other. Alternatively, the components can be formed integrally with each other.
[0118] Reference Figures 15 to 17 , the top member 104 will now be described in further detail. The top member 104 is configured to support the fan 14. The top member 104 includes a plate 148 having an opening 150 sized to receive at least one fan 14. In some embodiments, the plate 148 includes two openings 150, wherein each opening 150 is sized to receive two fans 14. Fig.16 It can be seen that the fan 14 is disposed in the opening 150 and is fixed to the plate 148. Fig.17 In an alternative embodiment, the top member 104 may further include a guide 152 for guiding air. The guide 152 includes an angled portion 154 for directing air toward the fan 14. The guide 152 may be disposed on an interior portion of the top member 104, and in some embodiments, the guide 152 may be positioned on opposite side walls of the top member 104. The guide 152 may be fastened to the top member 104 via screws, bolts, etc. Alternatively, the guide 152 may be integral with the top member 104. However, it is understood that the guide 152 may include different configurations. The top member 104 is configured to be removably secured to the top surface of the laterally extending arms 138 of each of the frames 102 such that the top member 104 extends between the two frames 102 (see Fig.11 ). In some embodiments, the top member 104 is sized to be substantially similar to or smaller than the body portion 137 of the frame 102. In alternative embodiments, the top member 104 can be secured in a different configuration, such as to an inner surface of the laterally extending arms 138, or to an upper portion of each of the upwardly extending arms 136, or a combination thereof.
[0119] It should be noted that while the dry cooler assembly 10 is described as having two frames 102, one top member 104, and two base members 106, any number of these components may be used in alternative embodiments. For example, the dry cooler assembly 10 may include four base members 106. Thus, in the assembled configuration, each base member 106 is positioned to be spaced apart from one another and is configured to receive one foot member 140 of the corresponding frame 102.
[0120] In another embodiment, the base member 106 can be configured to extend parallel to the laterally extending arms 138 of the frame 102, rather than being positioned orthogonal to the laterally extending arms 138 as previously described. In this embodiment, the foot members 140 of the frame 102 are configured to extend parallel to the laterally extending arms 138 to be received by the channels 110 of the base member 106 in the assembled configuration.
[0121] It is also contemplated that the assembled dry cooler assembly 10 may be in a V-shaped configuration. That is, the frame 102 (and the heat exchanger 12 , cooling pad 16 , and reservoir 18 connected thereto) may be disposed at an angle to form a V-shape.
[0122] Method for assembling dry cooler assembly
[0123] Reference Fig.18 , a method 300 of assembling the dry cooler assembly 10 into an assembled configuration will now be described. Broadly, the method 300 of assembling the dry cooler assembly 10 includes: securing the base member 106 to a support surface on which the dry cooler assembly 10 is to be placed; positioning the two frames 102 into the base member 106; and arranging the top member 104 onto the frames 102. The top member 104 is arranged already assembled with the fan 14, and the frame 102 is assembled with the heat exchanger 12.
[0124] The method 300 includes step 304 of securing the base members 106 to a support surface on which the assembled dry cooler assembly 10 will be placed. Step 304 includes positioning the base members 106 such that the base members 106 are spaced apart from each other and parallel to each other. The base members 106 are spaced apart from each other by a distance that is substantially similar to the length of the laterally extending arms 138 of the frame 102. Step 304 also includes securing one of the base members 106 to the support surface by inserting a bolt or screw into the opening 116 on the bottom face 114.
[0125] It is contemplated that in alternative embodiments, alternative means may be used to secure the base member 106 to the support surface. For example, the base member 106 may be partially covered with concrete, thereby partially embedding the base member 106 into the support surface. Alternatively, a separate component (such as a bracket) may be positioned to span the base member 106 and secure it to the support surface.
[0126] In some embodiments, one base member 106 is secured at a time. Alternatively, two base members 106 may be secured at the same time.
[0127] The method 300 also includes step 306 of placing each of the frames 102 in the base member 106. Step 306 includes lifting one of the frames 102 and lowering the frame 102 into the base member 106. In some embodiments, lifting the frame 102 includes inserting a fork of a forklift into the slot 147 of the support beam 146 and lifting the frame 102. In an alternative embodiment, lifting the frame 102 is achieved using a crane. In some embodiments, lowering the frame 102 includes using the flared upper portion 118 to guide the foot member 140 of the frame into the channel 110. That is, when the frame 102 is lowered, the foot member 140 can contact a section of the flared upper portion 118 of the corresponding base member 106 and move down along the angled wall into the channel 110. Step 306 can also include placing the support member 144 in the recessed portion 120 of the corresponding base member 106. Step 306 may also include abutting the end 142 of the foot member 140 with the abutment member of the corresponding base member 106. The process is repeated for the second frame 102.
[0128] It is contemplated that in alternative embodiments, both frames 102 may be disposed in the base member 106 simultaneously.
[0129] The method 300 also includes step 308 of positioning the top member 104 onto the frames 102. Step 308 includes positioning the top member 104 onto an upper surface of the transversely extending arms 138 of each of the frames 102 such that the top member 104 extends between the two frames 102. Step 308 may also include connecting the top member 104 to the frames 102. Connecting the top member 104 to the frames 102 may include aligning an opening of the top member 104 with a complementary opening disposed on the transversely extending arms 138 and inserting a screw or bolt into the opening.
[0130] In alternative embodiments, the top member 104 may be secured to another portion of the frame 102 , such as an upper portion of the upwardly extending arm 136 , or a combination of the upwardly extending arm 136 and the laterally extending arm 138 .
[0131] It is contemplated that in alternative embodiments, the top member 104 may be welded to a corresponding frame 102 member.
[0132] The method 300 may also include step 310 of inserting the electrical circuit and / or the liquid circuit into the cable and pipe management system. Step 310 may include inserting the electrical circuit and / or the liquid circuit into the ring wire 130 of the ring wire arrangement 126. In some embodiments, the electrical circuit and / or the liquid circuit may be inserted into a single ring wire arrangement 126 or multiple ring wire arrangements 126 arranged along the length of the dry cooler assembly 10. Step 310 may also include connecting the insert 132 to one of the support members 144 of each frame in the frame 102, thereby forming a passage above the electrical circuit and / or the liquid circuit. It is expected that the connection of the insert 132 may be completed before the electrical circuit and / or the liquid circuit is inserted into the ring wire arrangement 126.
[0133] In some embodiments, step 310 may include inserting additional electrical and / or fluid circuits for supporting multiple dry cooler assemblies 10 , thereby enabling the addition of new dry cooler assemblies 10 in the future.
[0134] The method 300 may also include step 312 of positioning the end panel 108. In some embodiments, positioning the end panel 108 includes connecting one edge of the first end panel 108 to the outer surface of one of the upwardly extending arms 136 of the frame 102, and connecting the opposite edge of the end panel 108 to the outer surface of one of the upwardly extending arms 136 of the other frame 102. In some embodiments, connecting the respective edge of the end panel 108 to the respective upwardly extending arm 136 of the frame 102 includes aligning an opening provided on the end panel 108 with a complementary hole provided on the upwardly extending arm 136, and inserting a screw or bolt into the hole. In an alternative embodiment, the end panel 108 may be welded to the frame 102. The process is repeated for the second end panel 108.
[0135] In alternative embodiments, connecting the end panels 108 may further include connecting an upper edge of the end panel 108 to an edge of the top member 104 and / or connecting a lower edge of the end panel 108 to one of the base members 106. It is contemplated that the end panels 108 may be connected one by one or simultaneously.
[0136] Optionally, the method 300 may include step 302 for situations where the components of the dry cooler assembly 10 are not connected to the respective frames 102 and / or top members 104. Thus, optional step 302 includes assembling the components of one or more of the dry cooler assemblies 10 to their respective frames 102 and top members 104. In some embodiments, step 302 includes connecting one of the heat exchangers 12 to the inside side of the body portion 137 of one of the frames 102. Step 302 may also include connecting one of the cooling pads 16 and one of the reservoirs 18 to the outside side of the body portion 137 of the respective frame 102. Thus, the frame 102 is sandwiched between the heat exchanger 12 and the cooling pad 16 and associated reservoir 18. In some embodiments, connecting the heat exchanger 12, cooling pad 16, and reservoir 18 to the respective frames 102 includes aligning openings provided on the heat exchanger 12, cooling pad 16, and reservoir 18 with complementary openings provided on the upwardly extending arms 136 and the laterally extending arms 138 of the frame 102, and inserting connectors such as bolts or screws into the openings. The process is repeated for the second frame 102.
[0137] In alternative embodiments, the heat exchanger 12, cooling pad 16, and reservoir 18 may be connected to another portion of the frame 102. For example, the reservoir 18 may be connected to one of the support members 144 of the frame 102. In further alternative embodiments, the heat exchanger 12, cooling pad 16, and reservoir 18 may be welded to the respective frame 102 components.
[0138] Optional step 302 also includes placing the fan 14 in the opening 150 of the top member 140 and connecting the fan 14 to the plate 148 of the top member. In some embodiments, connecting the fan 14 to the plate 148 involves aligning complementary holes disposed on the fan 14 and the plate 148 and inserting screws or bolts into the complementary holes.
[0139] In an alternative embodiment, the fan 14 may be welded to the plate 148 of the top member.
[0140] Due to the modularity of the dry cooler assembly 10, it is understood that the above method 300 is exemplary only and that steps 302 to 312 are interchangeable and may be performed in an alternative order. For example, step 312 of securing the end panels 108 to the frame 102 may be performed prior to step 308 of placing the top member 104 on the frame 102. In another embodiment, step 310 of inserting the electrical circuit and / or the liquid circuit into the cable and conduit management system may be completed prior to step 308 of placing the top member 104 on the frame 102.
[0141] It is also understood that the method 300 includes the steps of connecting the electrical circuit to the power source and connecting the fluid circuit to the data center and the data center reservoir. It is contemplated that the method 300 may include the additional step of connecting the reservoir 18 to the cooling pad 16.
[0142] Embodiments of the disclosed dry cooler assembly 10 provide various benefits. Specifically, the modular design of the dry cooler assembly 10 configures the dry cooler assembly 10 to be modulated between a disassembled configuration and an assembled configuration, wherein the disassembled configuration reduces the footprint compared to the assembled configuration. Therefore, the storage and shipping of the dry cooler assembly 10 are improved. With regard to the shipping of the dry cooler assembly 10, multiple dry cooler assemblies 10 in a disassembled configuration can be accommodated in a single shipping container, thereby reducing shipping costs and the size of the carbon footprint. In addition, the modular nature of the dry cooler assembly 10 provides flexibility during installation. Additionally, since each component of the dry cooler assembly 10 is independent, the required mechanical equipment can be reduced because the weight of each component is less than the total weight of the dry cooler assembly 10. Additionally, the dry cooler assembly 10 removes the need for complex assembly steps, such as the requirement to install complex concrete supports. In addition, due to the modular design, new dry cooler assemblies 10 can be easily installed.
[0143] In view of the various disclosures directed to the dry cooler assembly 10, it will be understood that although the embodiments presented herein have been described with reference to specific features and structures, it is apparent that various modifications and combinations may be made without departing from these disclosures.
