Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to non-oxidizing 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting compositions with excellent foam distribution for simultaneous cleaning and disinfection of hard surfaces and objects, particularly in cleaning out of place (COP) applications. The compositions include a cationic biocide, one or more foaming nonionic surfactants, and an alkalinity source to create a highly alkaline environment, thereby facilitating the removal of protein and fatty soils. The present disclosure also relates to methods of using these compositions, particularly in COP processes. Background Art

[0002] Cleaning-out-of-place (COP) cleaning technology is a specific cleaning and disinfecting regimen suitable for removing soils from: interior and exterior surfaces of a wide variety of components (such as ceramic surfaces, metal surfaces), walls, sinks, soaking containers, mop buckets, storage tanks, scrub sinks, vehicle parts washers, non-continuous batch washers and systems, etc.

[0003] Typically, the COP method may involve a first rinse, application of a separate cleaning and disinfecting solution and any other solution, and a final rinse, followed by resumption of operation. Particularly in the food and beverage industry, multiple cleaning and disinfection steps must be experienced to ensure food safety after each production. The heavy fat and protein dirt produced by the food production process is particularly difficult to remove. Traditional COP methods involve separate cleaning and disinfection steps to ensure sufficient cleaning performance and disinfection performance. Due to the need for separate cleaning and disinfection solution application, the method may take a long time to complete, typically up to one hour. Separate cleaning and disinfection steps also lead to an increase in water and electricity consumption.

[0004] Furthermore, conventional cleaning compositions used in COP processes, particularly in the food and meat processing industries, are non-foaming or low-foaming compositions. Furthermore, non-foaming or low-foaming cleaning compositions have the following drawbacks: due to low foam stability, the user cannot easily track treated or untreated areas. Therefore, there is a tendency for some surfaces to be missed or treated twice, resulting in ineffective and / or inefficient use of water, cleaning solutions and time.

[0005] Therefore, there is a need for a composition that can provide effective cleaning and disinfecting functions but does not require multiple steps. The composition should be able to effectively remove soils, especially heavy fat and protein soils, and should have excellent foaming and foam stability to obtain aesthetic quality and easy tracking. The present disclosure relates to such a 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming composition.

[0006] The above-mentioned shortcomings of current COP compositions and methods are solved by embodiments of the present disclosure and will be understood by reading and studying the following description. The following overview is provided by way of example and not by way of limitation. It is only provided to help the reader understand some aspects of the present disclosure. Summary of the invention

[0082] The chelating agent used must be capable of coordinating (i.e., binding) with metal ions typically present in water sources and be included in a concentration sufficient to coordinate. For example, formulations that teach the use of chelating agents for corrosion inhibition (such as in U.S. Patent Publication No. 2019 / 0169550) are not used in 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming compositions at concentrations that will provide cleaning efficacy.

[0083] Additional functional materials

[0084] The components of the 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming composition can be further combined with various functional components suitable for COP applications. [0125] How to use

[0126] Compositions disclosed herein are suitable for 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfection and / or disinfection of various hard surfaces and objects. The composition is intended to be used on various types of surfaces and various types of dirt. The 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfection foaming composition is effective in cleaning and disinfecting surfaces simultaneously without the need for multiple steps. In some aspects, the 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfection foaming composition is particularly suitable for cleaning in situ (COP) applications. COP systems may include easily accessible systems, including sinks, soaking containers, mop buckets, water storage tanks, sinks, auto parts washing machines, discontinuous intermittent washing machines and systems, etc.

[0127] Exemplary industries to which the methods of the present invention may be applied include, but are not limited to: the food and beverage industries, e.g., dairy, cheese, sugar, meat processing, butchery, cake, snack and brewery industries, including, e.g., evaporator and pasteurizer cleaning, including mechanized butchery lines and batch freezers; the oil processing industry; industrial agriculture and ethanol processing; and the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

[0128] In another embodiment, the method of using the 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming composition may include removing a variety of dirt from various surfaces, such as industrial surfaces, agricultural or veterinary surfaces, airflows, food processing surfaces, food, meat products, poultry, health care surfaces, various instruments, plants, plant products, vehicles, appliances, etc. The composition can be applied to a variety of fields, including kitchens, factories, and food factories, and can be applied to a variety of hard or soft surfaces with smooth, irregular or porous morphologies. Suitable hard surfaces include, for example, building surfaces (e.g., floors, walls, windows, sinks, tables, conveyors, counters, and signs); tableware; hard surface medical or surgical instruments and devices; and hard surface packaging. Such hard surfaces can be made of a variety of materials, including, for example, ceramic, metal, glass, wood, or polymer surfaces. With regard to the method of using the composition, the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in any way.

[0129] In some aspects, the method of using the composition includes applying the composition to a surface or contacting a surface, such as an industrial equipment surface, to clean using a COP process. Conventional COP processes are generally well known and are used to clean objects, surfaces and equipment that cannot be cleaned and must be disassembled where they are used, and for equipment pieces and parts that are not suitable for a clean-in-place (CIP) process. The COP process may include manual or machine washing.

[0130] A typical COP process for removing foulants (including organic components, inorganic components, or a mixture of these two components) generally includes at least three steps: an initial water rinse or a previously used chemical rinse, application of a 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming composition, and a final fresh water rinse. Additional steps may include a separate acid or alkaline wash and a separate disinfection step, however, the 2-in-1 composition of the present disclosure substantially or completely eliminates the need for separate cleaning and disinfection steps. The strength of the solution, the duration of the cleaning step, and the cleaning solution temperature generally depend on the amount and toughness of the foulant. The water rinse removes any residual chemical solution and foulant before the equipment is put back online for production purposes.

[0131] According to the method, using the COP method for the 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming composition means immersing the object in the composition, spraying on the composition, wiping with the composition, flow-through application, etc.

[0132] Various methods can be used to apply the 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming composition to a surface. These methods can operate on an object, surface, etc. by contacting the object or surface with the composition. Contacting can include any of a variety of liquid application methods, such as spraying the compound, immersing the object in the compound, treating the object with a foam or gel of the compound, or a combination thereof. Without being limited to contacting according to the present invention, the concentrate liquid composition or the use of the liquid composition can be applied to or contacted with an object by any conventional method or device used to apply a liquid composition to an object. For example, the surface can be wiped with the liquid composition, sprayed with the liquid composition, foamed on the surface, and / or immersed in the liquid composition, or a liquid composition made from a liquid composition of a concentrate can be used. The liquid composition can be sprayed, foamed, or wiped onto the surface; the compound can be flowed over the surface, or the surface can be immersed in the compound. Contacting can be manual or by machine.

[0133] The 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming composition is contacted with a surface or object for a sufficient time to clean and disinfect the surface or object. In one aspect, the surface or object is contacted with the composition for at least about 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, at least about 10 minutes, or about 10 minutes to about 20 minutes.

[0134] The 2-in-1 cleaning and disinfecting foaming composition can be applied to a surface or object in need of cleaning using a solution or a concentrated solution. In one aspect, the composition is used at a concentration of about 0.01% to about 50% by weight, including all ranges therebetween. However, in some embodiments, a concentrated composition may be used and does not require dilution with water.

[0135] These methods may also optionally include the step of wiping the treated surface or object with a rag, towel, sponge or other article (e.g., disposable paper towel or sponge). In other embodiments, this step is not required because the surface or object can be placed in a washing machine or dishwasher for further treatment with the detergent composition. In some embodiments involving heavy dirt deposits or stains, the composition can be left on the contaminated surface until it has effectively loosened the dirt deposits or stains, after which it can be wiped off, rinsed off or otherwise removed. Multiple applications may also be used for particularly heavy deposits of such undesirable stains.

[0136] These methods may also optionally include the use of mechanical force during the contacting step. For example, to remove certain soils or stains from a surface or object, it may be necessary to apply additional force, for example, applying a water source and / or mechanical force to help remove the soil.

[0137] These methods may also optionally include the step of rinsing the treated surface or object with water. In other embodiments, the composition is wiped off the contaminated surface, thereby effectively removing the dirt and any residual composition. In other aspects, no rinsing step is required.

[0138] The composition can be applied after the step of heating the composition to a temperature of about 40°F or higher, 40°F to about 150°F. In other embodiments, these methods provide for removing dirt from a surface or object at ambient or room temperature (e.g., about 50°F to about 100°F). In various embodiments, it is preferred that neither the surface or object nor the composition be heated before the contacting step. In other cases, these methods provide for removing dirt from a surface or object at a cooler temperature (e.g., about 25°F to about 50°F). In other cases, these methods may need to be applied to a surface or object with a temperature range of 0°F to about 200°F.

[0139] Example

[0140] The present disclosure will be described in more detail in the following examples, which are intended for illustration only, as many modifications and variations within the scope of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Unless otherwise indicated, all parts, percentages and ratios reported in the following examples are based on weight, and all reagents used in the examples are obtained from the following chemical suppliers or can be purchased from the following suppliers, or can be synthesized by conventional techniques.

[0141] Example 1

[0142] Dirt Removal

[0143] For effective one-step cleaning and disinfection, the composition should contain both a high performance detergent as well as a disinfectant. The detergent must remain stable in the presence of the disinfectant and effectively remove soils, especially soils containing heavy fats and proteins. The cleaning performance / soil removal test is designed to evaluate the heavy fat and protein soil removal capabilities of various test formulations.

[0144] Table 2 records the various formulations prepared and tested. Note that the percentages recorded in this section are only the total percentages of the components received from the commercial suppliers, including inert ingredients such as water or salts in these tables. In each case where this occurs, the percentage of active ingredient in the product received from the supplier is listed, and the percentage of active material can be easily calculated from this information.

[0145] Table 2: Test formulations N1 to N7 (all components are presented in wt %)

[0147] A fat and protein food soil consisting of lard, oil, protein and iron oxide (for color) was prepared. About 30 g of lard was mixed with about 30 g of corn oil, about 15 g of whole egg powder and 15 g of iron oxide.

[0148] The soil mixture was applied to multiple 3" x 5" stainless steel plates using a foam brush to create an even layer of approximately 0.25 g to 0.3 g of soil per plate. The plates were dried overnight to allow the bonds holding the triglycerides and proteins in the soil together to crystallize and connect to each other. The weight of each dried plate was recorded prior to testing.

[0149] Test formulations were prepared according to Table 2. Commercially available hard surface cleaners were also tested for comparison. 800 g of each formulation (per replicate) was used to create a soaking solution and placed in a separate 1000 ml beaker. The prepared dry panels were completely immersed in the test formulations and the formulations were stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes, which is the typical soil removal time for 2% active NaOH as a benchmark. The panels were then removed from the formulations using metal tongs and rinsed with low pressure deionized water for 1 minute. The rinsed panels were then allowed to dry overnight at room temperature.

[0150] The next day, the final weight of the dried board was taken. Based on the initial and final weights of the board, the average % soil removal was calculated for each formulation tested (including commercially available hard surface cleaners). The results are presented in Table 3 below.

[0153]

[0154] The cleaning performance results in Table 3 show that formulations with low wt% water and increasing wt% NaOH and betaine based surfactants clean better than commercially available products. The results are shown graphically in Figure 1 middle.

[0155] The overall success of the test formulations in the soil removal test demonstrates that high performance cleaners can remain stable when combined with disinfectants. Thus, these formulations can provide an effective 2-in-1 composition that cleans and disinfects simultaneously without the need for multiple steps.

[0156] Example 2

[0157] Foaming performance

[0158] Consumers desire aesthetic formulations that produce dense and hard foam quickly. The foaming performance test was designed to evaluate the foaming properties and foam stability of various test formulations. The same test formulations as presented in Table 2 and tested in Example 1 were evaluated for foaming performance.

[0159] The formulations of Table 2 were prepared as 2% (weight / volume) solutions using 1 L of room temperature water and mixed thoroughly. The solutions were transferred to a foaming machine and circulation was started. Foamability was tested by recording the time for each formulation to reach a foam height of 25 cm. To test foam stability, foam height and photographs were taken every 5 minutes for 30 minutes.

[0160] The results are presented in Table 4 below. The foaming time reflects the foaming properties and is the time taken for each formulation to reach a foam height of 25 cm. The height difference reflects the foam stability and is calculated by comparing the foam height at 0 minutes with the foam height at 30 minutes.

[0162]

[0163]

[0164] Table 4 demonstrates that increasing the alkalinity of the formulation by increasing the amount of NaOH does not hinder foam generation or stability, and actually improves foaming performance. All tested formulations exhibited excellent foaming and foam stability compared to commercially available products, with N1, N3, and N4 having the best overall foaming performance, likely due to the higher wt% of NaOH and surfactant. The results for N1, N3, and N4 are shown graphically in Table 4. Figure 2A and Figure 2B middle.

[0165] Test formulations N3 and N4 demonstrated excellent performance in both the soil removal test and the foam performance test. Relative to the other test formulations, N3 and N4 had the lowest weight % of water and the highest weight % of NaOH. N3 and N4 generally outperformed the other test formulations with the same surfactant profile but with lower weight % NaOH, indicating that increasing the NaOH in the formulation will improve cleaning and foaming performance.
