Abstract
Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 374,022, filed on August 31, 2022, and European Application No. 22198953.6, filed on September 30, 2022, both of which are incorporated herein by reference as if set forth in their entirety. Technical Field
[0003] The present disclosure relates to fragrance compositions, in particular to fragrance compositions comprising 2,3-butylene glycol and / or 1,3-butylene glycol. The present disclosure also relates to consumer products containing the fragrance compositions, such as leave-on products, such as eau de toilette, eau de parfum, body spray, deodorant, etc. Background Art
[0004] Improving the solubility of fragrances or fragrance ingredients is a daily challenge faced by the perfumery and cosmetics industry. Ethanol and dipropylene glycol are commonly used solvents for diluting fragrance oils and concentrates.
[0005] Ethanol, in particular, is controversial for use in consumer products, especially personal care products. This controversy is due to religious beliefs, environmental impacts, and a tendency to cause skin irritation. As a result, over the past decade, there has been a growing trend toward reducing the use of ethanol in personal care products. Many industries, especially the fragrance industry, are facing a potential new CARB regulation that seeks to limit the percentage of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in personal fragrance products with a fragrance content of ≤10% to 50% by January 2031.
[0006] However, there are challenges in reducing the ethanol content in fragrance products. One challenge is the reduced olfactory impact, which is the effectiveness or intensity of the fragrance raw materials at the first moment of product performance. Since ethanol is very volatile, it helps to provide olfactory impact. Replacing ethanol with less volatile solvents in fragrance products tends to reduce its olfactory effect, which is unfavorable because impact is a very important feature of fragrance because it provides the first impression of the fragrance. Another challenge is the reduction in solubility of the components in the fragrance. Ethanol can be used to dissolve fragrance components, many of which are lipophilic. Reducing ethanol will lead to a reduction in the solubility of fragrance components, often resulting in undesirable results. These challenges become more apparent as consumer demand for water-based solutions continues to increase. The technical issue of dissolving high doses of fragrance to obtain a beautiful, transparent product without any surfactants or solubilizers becomes another challenge.
[0007] Thus, there continues to be a need for fragrance compositions that are free of ethanol but are able to elicit a desired olfactory profile, provide desired fragrance component solubility, and / or aesthetics (ie, clarity). Summary of the invention

[0266] A fragrance component can be characterized by an average log P, which is the average of the log P values of the individual components of the fragrance component. As used herein, "log P" refers to the logarithm (base 10) of the partition coefficient (P), which is defined as the ratio of the organic phase (usually oil) to the aqueous phase concentration of a compound. Log P describes the partition coefficient of a compound in a two-phase system consisting of octanol and water (Log P = Log (C 辛醇 / C 水)). This parameter provides a measure of the hydrophilic / lipophilic properties of a compound: the higher the Log P, the more lipophilic the compound is. The Log P value can be determined empirically or calculated. In some embodiments, the log P values of the components of the fragrance composition are calculated. The calculated log P or C log P can be obtained for each single perfuming ingredient according to methods known to those of ordinary skill in the art. For example, C log P can be obtained according to the program EPI suite (4.0); EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency) and Syracuse Research Corporation (SRC), 2000. In another example, C log P can be calculated according to the method described in Suzuki T. 1992, CHEMICALC 2, QCPE Program No 608, Department of chemistry, Indiana University; Suzuki T., Kudo Y. J. Comput.-Aided Mol. Design 1990, 4, 155; Suzuki T., J. Comput.-Aided Mol. Design 1991, 5, 149. In yet another example, C log P may be determined using an application provided by the following website: http: / / www.daylight.com / daycgi / clogp.
[0267] In one embodiment, the fragrance components have an average C log P of greater than 4.
[0268] In another embodiment, the fragrance component comprises at least 20 wt% of ingredients having a C log P of 4 to 5 and at least 20 wt% of ingredients having a C log P of 5 to 6, relative to the weight of the fragrance component.

In another embodiment, the fragrance composition further comprises 1,3-propanediol, 1,2-pentanediol, and 1,2-octanediol.
[0272] The amount of the one or more solvents characterized by a log P greater than or equal to -2 and less than or equal to 2 is not particularly limited. In other words, to be considered a perfuming co-ingredient, such a co-ingredient must be recognized by a person skilled in the art as being able to impart or modify the scent of the composition in an active or pleasant manner, rather than merely possessing a scent. In addition to modifying or imparting a scent, a perfuming co-ingredient may impart additional benefits, such as persistence, burst, malodor counteracting, antimicrobial action, antiviral action, microbial stability, or pest control.

[0318] Example 2. Sensory Panel
[0319] A sensory panel evaluation was conducted to compare a reference EDT ("Control 1") and an inventive EDT ("EDT1"), both containing Fragrance A, to measure olfactory performance.
[0320] Preheat a Prazitherm PZ72 slide heater to 32°C for 30 minutes. Place a blotter on a precision heating plate. Use an adjustable volume pipette to drop 20 μL of solution directly onto the center of the blotter and evaporate at 32°C. Randomly arranged blotters were evaluated by 7 panelists at different times (t = 0 minutes (initial), 2 hours, 4 hours, and 6 hours).
[0321] The method used was a 3-Alternative Forced Choice test. For each time point, the panelists were presented with 3 samples, two of which were reference EDTs ("Control 1") and one of which was an inventive EDT1.
[0322] Panelists pointed to the samples that they considered to have higher overall strength.
[0323] Assumptions:
[0324] H0: There is no difference between the two samples.
[0325] H1: In terms of overall strength, samples that include technology are stronger than samples that do not include technology.
[0326] Related risks:
[0327] H0 rejected = α risk:
[0328] Risks associated with false positives, concluding that products are different when they are not.
[0329] Data were analyzed using binomial statistics.
[0330] Data interpretation:
[0331] If a p-value is obtained for α ≤ 0.05, then the sample containing the technology is stronger than the sample without the technology in terms of overall strength,
[0332] If a p-value is obtained for α of 0.05 < α ≤ 0.10, it is determined that there is a trend difference,
[0333] If a p-value is obtained for α>0.10, then the samples are not significantly different.
[0334] The sensory evaluation results are as follows Figure 1 shown. Figure 1 Shown is a comparison of the olfactory performance of a reference EDT ("Control 1") and an EDT according to the invention ("EDT1"), both containing the same fragrance. Figure 1 According to the results of the sensory panel presented in , the alcohol-free formulation containing 2,3-butylene glycol showed a higher fragrance intensity after 2 and 4 hours of evaporation than the classic Eau de Toilette formula containing the same inverted pyramid fragrance. In addition, the fragrance notes evaluated in the alcohol-free formulation had more citrus notes and were fresher. The top notes were also prolonged. Thus, the alcohol-free formulation containing 2,3-butylene glycol showed improved persistence compared to the reference classic Eau de Toilette formula.
[0335] Example 3. Evaporation Kinetics
[0336] Two formulations, a comparative formulation ("Control 2") and an inventive formulation ("EDT5") were made by combining a fragrance ("Fragrance B") with the components and amounts summarized in Table 3 below.

[0346]
[0347] The evaporation kinetics of the inventive EDT5 were compared with the evaporation kinetics of the comparative formulation Control 2.
[0348] Evaporation was performed in a Tzero cover. A Prazitherm PZ72 slide heater was preheated to 32°C for 30 minutes. Each crucible was placed on a precision hotplate. Using an adjustable volume pipette, 10 μL of the fragrance formula was dosed directly into the center of the crucible and evaporated on a precision hotplate at 32°C for 5 minutes (considered as time zero, "T0"), 15 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, and 6 hours. Three replicates were performed for each sample and each test condition. When the time point was reached, each crucible was placed in a 2 mL Agilent GC chromatography vial (Agilent 5183-2068) and 500 μL of ethanol was added to stop evaporation. The vial was closed and mixed by shaking for at least 1 minute. The samples were analyzed by GC-MS direct injection method.
[0349] The results are as follows Figure 2 and Figure 3 shown. Figure 2 The evaporation rates of the fragrance components in the comparative formulation and the formulation of the present invention are shown. Figure 3 The evaporation rates of the solvent components in the comparative formulation and the formulation of the present invention are shown. Figure 2 As shown in Figure 2, the results of the evaporation kinetics evaluation highlight the ability of alcohol-free fragrance formulations containing 2,3-butylene glycol (pattern fill) to improve persistence by reducing the evaporation rate of fragrance components. This effect is noticeable after 15 minutes of evaporation. Interestingly, Figure 3As shown, the solvent area in the alcohol-free formulation of the present invention shows that 2,3-butanediol itself evaporates faster than other diols.
[0350] Example 4. Solubility
[0351] The solubility of various fragrance components with different log P components in different proportions for different ethanol-free bases was determined. In summary, the ethanol-free base was charged into a beaker. Under magnetic stirring, the fragrance components were added dropwise until inhomogeneity and / or turbidity appeared. The mass of the fragrance components added was recorded and the solubility was calculated. The ethanol-free bases (including comparative bases) are summarized in Table 5a and Table 5b, while the fragrance components are summarized in Table 6 below.

[0371] Table 7b.
[0372]
[0373] It is noteworthy that, as shown in Table 7a, the solubility of F5 in the inventive formulation containing 2,3-butanediol and optionally 1,3-butanediol is significantly higher than that in the control formulation. Similarly, as shown in Table 7b, the solubility of F5 in the inventive formulation containing 1,3-butanediol is significantly higher than that in the control formulation without 1,3-butanediol. This shows that the inventive formulation provides higher solubility for fragrance components with an average log P of 4 or greater.
[0374] All the inventive formulations (GCP, BGCP, BGCP-2, ZGCP, BCP) showed better fragrance solubility compared to Control 4 which does not contain 2,3-butanediol or 1,3-butanediol. Adding 2,3-butanediol or 1,3-butanediol can improve fragrance solubility. Log P is an important parameter for solubility. It is expected that fragrances with high Log P will be more difficult to dissolve into water-based formulations. The inventive formulations were able to dissolve more fragrance than Control 3 and Control 4, which is the same as the case with F5 which has the highest average Log P (>4).
[0375] Example 5. Exemplary compositions
[0376] Exemplary compositions according to the present invention (BW, BGW and GW) were prepared by combining phenyl ethanol (a commonly used fragrance raw material) and using the components and amounts summarized in Table 8 below. To obtain these compositions, the solvents were weighed and mixed in a beaker under magnetic stirring. Phenyl ethanol was added to the mixture. Water was then added and the solution was stirred until uniform.
