AI Technical Summary
Dihydroavenanthramide D in cosmetic compositions experiences color instability, leading to discoloration, and existing stabilizers like ascorbyl palmitate have limitations in long-term storage and may promote comedogenic activity, necessitating improved color stabilization without comedogenic effects.
The use of stabilizers such as diethylhexyl syringylidene malonate, sodium metabisulfite, Tris(tetramethylhydroxypiperidinol) citrate, or their mixtures, with specific weight ratios, to prevent discoloration and malodour formation in Dihydroavenanthramide D, offering enhanced color stability and avoiding comedogenic activity.
These stabilizers significantly reduce discoloration and malodour formation in Dihydroavenanthramide D, maintaining color stability over time and preventing comedogenic activity, thus improving the cosmetic composition's performance and consumer acceptance.

Abstract
Description
[0001] Munich,14 June 2024 Our Ref.: SM 6693-02WO SOE / DREApplicant:Symrise AGSerial Number:Subsequent Application based on PCT / EP2023 / 066131 Symrise AG Mühlenfeldstraße 1, 37603 Holzminden, Germany Stabilizer or stabilizer composition for stabilizing Dihydroavenanthramide D The present invention relates to the use of a stabilizer or a stabilizer composition for stabi- lizing Dihydroavenanthramide D in a mixture comprising Dihydroavenanthramide D and to a mixture comprising Dihydroavenanthramide D and a stabilizer, as well as to a cosmetic preparation comprising such a mixture. Dihydroavenanthramide D is a compound with particular importance in the cosmetic indus- try. Dihydroavenanthramide D belongs to the family of Avenanthramides, i.e. anthranilic acid amides, and is also described as hydroxyphenyl propamidobenzoic acid. Dihydroav- enanthramide D is described by the CAS number 697235-49-7 (as listed by the European Chemicals Agency) and corresponds to the following chemical structure: Dihydroavenanthramide D * *2022400321541500*315150* Dihydroavenanthramide D has been described for several cosmetic applications. For ex- ample, WO 2006 / 134013 A1 describes an application of Dihydroavenanthramide D for al- leviating itching and / or for reducing skin reddening. US 2006 / 089413 A1 describes that Dihydroavenanthramide D can be used for the inhibition of the substance P-induced release of histamine from mast cells. In this way, pruritus, skin reddening, weal development or allergic skin reactions may be prevented. Typically, Dihydroavenanthramide D is formulated in a cosmetic composition including fur- ther substances. One challenge for using Dihydroavenanthramide D is to provide and main- tain its colour stability in a cosmetic composition. If no or only insufficient colour stability of Dihydroavenanthramide D in a cosmetic composition is provided, it starts to cause a dis- coloration of the cosmetic composition. In such cases, the cosmetic compositions will change to a yellow to brownish colour, which increases with decreased colour stabilization of Dihydroavenanthramide D. Compositions with such discoloration are not accepted by the consumers of cosmetic com- positions, irrespective of the functionality of such a composition. Thus, Dihydroavenanthramide D is typically stabilized in cosmetic compositions. The sta- bilizer ascorbyl palmitate ascorbyl palmitate is widely used in such compositions. Ascorbyl palmitate is frequently added as a colour stabilizer for Dihydroavenanthramide in a cosmetic composition. It was found that ascorbyl palmitate is able to stabilize Dihydroavenanthramide D in cosmetic compositions. However, it was found that this function of ascorbyl palmitate is limited, since a reduced colour sta- bility of Dihydroavenanthramide D was observed after long-term storage of cosmetic com- positions comprising Dihydroavenanthramide D. Even though the stabilizer ascorbyl palmi- tate was added, the compositions showed a discoloration, often yellow to brownish discol- oration, after storage for some months and / or under conditions promoting the instability of compounds in a composition, such as increased temperature (e.g.40 °C or higher or 50 °C or higher). Thus, a need for further, preferably improved, colour stabilizers for Dihydroavenanthramide D in cosmetic compositions remains. Furthermore, discussions regarding the stabilizer ascorbyl palmitate have recently started. It is (controversially) discussed that ascorbyl palmitate provides a comedogenic activity, i.e. promotes the formation of comedones. Comedones are clogged hair follicles in the skin, which occur as a result of increased oil production in the sebaceous glands. Comedones are visible as darkened spots on the skin and occur mostly on the face, neck, upper chest, shoulders, and back of a subject, wherein they represent an exclusively cosmetic condition. Frequently, those areas treated with cosmetic compositions are visible in daily life and rep- resent those areas which shall provide a groomed appearance. Thus, comedones need to be prevented in these areas. Consequently, there is a need for further colour stabilizers for Dihydroavenanthramide D in cosmetic compositions, which preferably show an improved colour stabilizing ability. The primary object of the present invention was thus to provide stabilizers for Dihydroav- enanthramide D, preferably with improved colour stabilization compared to ascorbyl palmi- tate. The primary object of the present invention is solved by the use of a stabilizer or a stabilizer composition, wherein the stabilizer or, respectively, the or one or all stabilizer(s) of the stabilizer composition is / are selected from the group consisting of diethylhexyl syringyli- dene malonate, sodium metabisulfite, Tris(tetramethylhydroxypiperidinol) citrate, and mix- tures thereof, for stabilizing Dihydroavenanthramide D in a mixture comprising Dihydroavenanthramide D, wherein stabilizing Dihydroavenanthramide D refers to the prevention or reduction of dis- coloration of the mixture and / or to the prevention or reduction of malodour formation, and wherein the weight ratio of the stabilizer(s) to Dihydroavenanthramide D is in a range of from 0.0125 to 0.175, preferably of from 0.015 to 0.15, particularly preferably of from 0.02 to 0.1. It was surprisingly found that the stabilizer(s) used according to the invention provide a particular advantageous colour stabilization of Dihydroavenanthramide D. It was surpris- ingly found that a particularly low discoloration is observed when such a stabilizer or stabi- lizer composition is used, compared to the typically used stabilizer for Dihydroavenan- thramde D, i.e. ascorbyl palmitate, or tocopherol acetate, which is another frequently used stabilizer. Moreover, it was surprisingly found that a particularly low malodour formation occurs when such a stabilizer or stabilizer composition is used, compared to the typically used stabilizer for Dihydroavenanthramde D, i.e. ascorbyl palmitate, or tocopherol acetate, which is an- other frequently used stabilizer. It was further surprisingly found that the best outcome was observed when the weight ratio of Diethylhexyl Syringyldenemalonate to Dihydroavenanthramide D was higher than 0.01 and lower than 0.2, as also shown in Example 3 and Fig.1. Diethylhexyl syringylidene malonate is also known as Oxynex ST (and thus preferably is or includes Diethylhexyl Syringyldenemalonate, Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride) and is prefera- bly described by the CAS number 444811-29-4 (as listed by the European Chemicals Agency) and is preferably described as Propanedioic acid, 2-[(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxy- phenyl)methylene]-, 1,3-bis(2-ethylhexyl) ester. Tocopheryl acetate, preferably alpha-tocopherol acetate, is preferably described by the CAS number 52225-20-4 (as listed by the European Chemicals Agency) and is preferably described as [2R*(4R*,8R*)]-(±)-3,4-dihydro-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-2-(4,8,12-trimethyl- tridecyl)-2H-benzopyran-6-yl acetate. Sodium metabisulfite is preferably described by the CAS number 7681-57-4 (as listed by the European Chemicals Agency) and is preferably described as Disodium disulphite. Tris(tetramethylhydroxypiperidinol) citrate is preferably described by the CAS number 220410-74-2 (as listed by the European Chemicals Agency) and is preferably described as 1,4-dihydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidinium-2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylate. Advantageously, no comedogenic activity is described for diethylhexyl syringylidene malo- nate, sodium metabisulfite or Tris(tetramethylhydroxypiperidinol) citrate. [0002] Examples Example 1: Comparing different stabilizers - discoloration Compositions A-M were prepared as described below and stored at 40°C and 50°C for 1 month. Composition A serves as a comparative sample. The color of all samples were measured by using chromametry (L*a*b* values) at test-start and after 1 month storage at the different temperatures. Based on this numbers, the overall discoloration (ΔE) was calculated.
