Throughout this disclosure, a reference numeral with a letter refers to a specific instance of an element and the reference numeral without an accompanying letter refers to the element generically or collectively. Thus, as an example (not show in the drawings), device “12A” refers to an instance of a device class, which may be referred to generically as a device “12.” In the figures and the description, like numerals are intended to represent like elements. As used herein, the meaning of “a,” “an,” and “the” includes singular and plural references unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.

[0015] The described embodiments of the invention provide canted leg assemblies for passenger seats. While the canted leg assemblies are discussed for use with aircraft seats, they are by no means so limited. Rather, embodiments of the canted leg assemblies may be used in passenger seats or other seats of any type or otherwise as desired.

[0016] FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a generalized passenger seat assembly 100 according to certain embodiments of the present invention. The passenger seat assembly includes a seat base frame assembly 102 and one more seat back(s) 104 supported relative to the seat base frame assembly 102. The number of seat backs 104 should not be considered limiting on the disclosure. In various examples, the number of seat backs 104 correspond with the number of passengers that the passenger seat assembly is capable of carrying, and each seat back 104 and the corresponding portion of the seat base frame assembly 102 define a particular passenger seat 106. In the example of FIG. 1, the passenger seat assembly 100 is capable of carrying two passengers, and accordingly has two seat backs 104 and two passenger seats 106. However, in other examples, the passenger seat assembly 100 may be capable of carrying any desired number of passengers, such as one passenger, two passengers, three passengers, fourpassengers, or any other number of desired passengers. In these examples, the passenger seat assembly 100 can likewise have any desired number of corresponding seat backs 104.

[0017] The seat back 104 is connected to the seat base frame assembly 102, and is often pivotable relative to the seat base frame assembly 102 such that the seat back can be positioned in various positions such as a taxi-takeoff-landing (TTL) position, a reclined position, etc.

[0018] The seat base frame assembly 102 of the passenger seat assembly 100 generally includes a leg assembly 108 and at least one base frame tube 110. In the embodiment illustrated, the seat base frame assembly 102 includes two base frame tubes 110A-B. The seat base frame assembly 102 may also include one or more additional components, including but not limited to one or more spreaders 112, one or more armrests 114, a luggage bar 116, one or more seat pans, sub-combinations thereof, or various other components or other components as desired.

[0019] FIGS. 2-5 illustrate a leg assembly 208 according to various embodiments. In certain embodiments, the leg assembly 208 may be used with the passenger seat assembly 100 in place of the leg assembly 108. Further, in some embodiments, the leg assembly 208 may include the same or similar features as leg assembly 108. The leg assembly 208 includes a first leg 218 and a second leg 220. The first leg 218 and the second leg 220 may be constructed from various materials as desired. In some embodiments, the first leg 218 and / or the second leg 220 may be constructed from a metal including but not limited to aluminum, aluminum alloys, magnesium, magnesium alloys, titanium, steel, combinations thereof, or other materials or combinations of materials as desired. The first leg 218 may be constructed from the same material as the second leg 220 or from a different material as the second leg 220.

[0020] In some embodiments, the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 of the leg assembly may not be directly connected to each other. Thus, the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 may be manufactured separately. The first leg 218 may be fully separable from the second leg 220. In some embodiments, the first leg 218 may be indirectly connected to the second leg 220 via another non-leg assembly component. For example, the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 may be indirectly connected via the seat track, spreaders, and base frame tubes that are part of the passenger seat assembly. Having separate first legs 218 and second legs 220 of the leg assembly 208 may reduce the overall weight of the leg assembly 208 and may reduce the cost of manufacturing the leg assembly 208.

[0021] The first leg 218 includes a top end 222, a bottom end 224, a forward side 226, and an aft side 228. The bottom end 224 of the first leg 218 may be coupleable to an aircraft fuselage by seat track 225. In some examples, the first leg 218 may be exclusively coupled tothe first base frame tube 110A and the seat track 225. The second leg 220 may be positioned in an aft direction of the first leg 218. The second leg 220 includes a top end 232, a bottom end 234, a forward side 236, and an aft side 238. The bottom end 234 of the second leg 220 may be attachable to an aircraft fuselage by seat track 225. In some examples, the second leg 220 may be exclusively coupled to the second base frame tube HOB and the seat track 225. Additionally, the first leg 218 may be coupled to the first base frame tube 110A and the second leg may be coupled to the second base frame tube HOB via bolting, riveting, clamping, welding, adhering, or any other suitable form of coupling.

[0022] In some embodiments, the first leg 218 and / or the second leg 220 may be canted so that when looking at the first leg 218 and / or the second leg 220 from the forward-to-aft direction, e.g., as shown in FIG. 4, the top end 222, 232 is not vertically aligned with the bottom end 224, 234. For example, the top end 222 of the first leg 218 may be vertically offset from the bottom end 224 of the first leg 218 along a longitudinal axis 223 of the first base frame tube 110A at a first angle 250 relative to vertical. In some embodiments, the top end 232 of the second leg 220 is vertically offset from the bottom end 234 of the second leg 220 along a longitudinal axis 233 of the second base frame tube 110B at a second angle 260 relative to vertical.

[0023] The canted shape of the first leg 218 and / or the second leg 220 enables the leg assembly 208 to be used in a passenger seat assembly where an optimum armrest location lies directly above or in close proximity to the leg location defined by the seat tracks. This provides an improved flexibility of the coupling location of the first leg 218 and / or the second leg 220 along the corresponding base frame tube 110A, 110B relative to the fixed coupling location of the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 along the seat track 225 without needing additional offsetting attachment elements for the first leg 218 and the second leg 220.

[0024] Additionally, the longitudinal displacement afforded by the first angle 250 and the second angle 260 may allow for more uniform manufacture of the passenger seat assembly as the passenger seat assembly may not need to be customized to varying seat track locations on different aircraft. Rather, the first angle 250 and the second angle 260 can be selected based on the location of the seat track 225 of a given aircraft while the rest of the passenger seat assembly can be installed on multiple different models of aircraft.

[0025] In some embodiments, the first angle 250 and / or the second angle 260 ranges from 5 degrees to 15 degrees, 7 degrees to 15 degrees, 9 degrees to 15 degrees, 11 degrees to 15 degrees, 13 degrees to 15 degrees, 5 degrees to 13 degrees, 7 degrees to 13 degrees, 9degrees to 13 degrees, 11 degrees to 13 degrees, 5 degrees to 11 degrees, 7 degrees to 11 degrees, 9 degrees to 11 degrees, or 10 degrees to 11 degrees. In further embodiments, the first angle 250 and / or the second angle 260 is 10.5 degrees. The first angle 250 may be the same or different from the second angle 260.

[0026] In certain embodiments, the canted shape of the first leg 218 and / or the second leg 220 may include vertical portions as well as angled portions. For example, the first leg may include an upper portion 242 positioned at or proximate to the top end 222, a lower portion 246 positioned at or proximate to the bottom end 224, and an intermediate portion 244 positioned between the upper portion 242 and the lower portion 246. The upper portion 242 and the lower portion 246 may each extend vertically, and the intermediate portion 244 may extends at the first angle 250 relative to vertical.

[0027] Additionally, one of the first leg 218 or the second leg 220 may not be canted while the other of the first leg 218 or the second leg 220 is canted. For example, the first leg 218 may not be canted while the second leg 220 is canted. Thus, the top end 222 may be vertically aligned with the bottom end 224 along the longitudinal axis 223 of the first base frame tube 110A. In such embodiments, the top end 222 and the bottom end 224 may be vertically aligned when looking at the first leg 218 from the forward-to-aft direction. In some examples, the second leg 220 may not be canted while the first leg 218 is canted. Thus, the top end 232 may be vertically aligned with the bottom end 234 along the longitudinal axis 233 of the second base frame tube HOB. In such embodiments, the top end 232 and the bottom end 234 may be vertically aligned when looking at the second leg 220 from the forward-to-aft direction.

[0028] In some embodiments, both the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 may be canted in the same direction, e.g., both canted toward the right side or both canted toward the left side. In further embodiments, the second leg 220 may be canted in the opposite direction as the first leg 218, e.g., the first leg 218 may be canted toward the right side and the second leg 220 may be canted toward the left side or vice versa. For those embodiments where the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 are canted in opposite directions, the angle of canting may be the same for each leg or different. For example, the first leg 218 may be canted 10 degrees from vertical toward the right side and the second leg 220 may be canted 10 degrees from vertical toward the left side, or the first leg 218 may be canted 10 degrees from vertical toward the right side and the second leg 220 may be canted 5 degrees from vertical toward the left side.

[0029] Additionally, in a row of passenger seats, the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 of each seat may be canted in the same direction (e.g., the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 of a first seat are canted toward the right side and the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 of a second seat are canted toward the right side), may be canted in opposite directions (e.g., the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 of the first seat are canted toward the right side and the first leg 218 and the second leg 220 of the second seat are canted toward the left side), or may have any suitable combination of canted legs versus non-canted legs , right side canted legs versus left side canted legs, etc.

[0030] The first leg 218 may include a first aperture 230 adapted to receive the first base frame tube 110A. In certain embodiments, the first aperture 230 is at or proximate to the top end 222 of the first leg 218. The second leg 220 may include a second aperture 240 adapted to receive the second base frame tube HOB. In certain embodiments, the second aperture 240 is at or proximate to the top end 232 of the second leg 220. A transverse dimension of the first aperture 230 may be the same as a transverse dimension of a second aperture 240 of the second leg 220, although it need not be. In certain embodiments, the forward side 226 of first leg 218 at the first aperture 230 is a forward-most portion of the first leg 218.

[0031] In certain embodiments, the top end 232 is offset from the bottom end 234 in a forward-aft direction relative to the bottom end 224, e.g., as shown in FIG. 2. In various embodiments, a distance between the forward side 226 and the aft side 228 is a thickness of the first leg 218, and a distance between the forward side 236 and the aft side 238 is a thickness of the second leg 220. In some embodiments, the first leg 118 and / or the second leg 220 has a non-uniform thickness between the top end 222, 232 and the bottom end 224, 234. Alternatively, the first leg 118 and / or the second leg 220 may have a uniform thickness between the top end 222, 232 and the bottom end 224, 234. In certain embodiments, the first leg 218 and / or the second leg 220 has a maximum thickness at the first aperture 230 and / or the second aperture 240, respectively. In some embodiments, the forward side of the second aperture 240 is a forward-most portion of the second leg 220.

[0032] FIGS. 6-8 illustrate a leg assembly 308 according to various embodiments. In certain embodiments, the leg assembly 308 may be used with the passenger seat assembly 100 in place of the leg assembly 108. Further, in some embodiments, the leg assembly 308 may include the same or similar features as leg assembly 108 and / or leg assembly 208. The leg assembly 308 includes a first leg 318 and a second leg 320. The first leg 318 includes a top end322 and a bottom end 324, and the second leg 220 includes a top end 332 and a bottom end234.

[0033] In some embodiments, the first leg 318 and / or the second leg 320 may be canted so that when looking at the first leg 318 and / or the second leg 320 from the forward-to-aft direction, e.g., as shown in FIG. 6, the top end 322, 332 is not vertically aligned with the bottom end 324, 334. For example, the top end 322 of the first leg 318 may be vertically offset from the bottom end 324 of the first leg 318 along a longitudinal axis 323 of the first base frame tube 110A at a first angle 350 relative to vertical. In some embodiments, the top end 332 of the second leg 320 is vertically offset from the bottom end 334 of the second leg 320 along a longitudinal axis of the second base frame tube at a second angle 360 relative to vertical.

[0034] Additionally, the first leg 318 and / or the second leg 320 may extend linearly between the top end 322, 332 and the bottom end 324, 334 such that no portions of the first leg 318 and / or the second leg 320 include any portions that are vertically oriented.

[0035] FIG. 8 is a partial rear view of the second leg 320 of the leg assembly 308. The second leg 320 may be coupled to the seat track via a seat track fitting member 352. The second leg 320 is coupleable to the seat track fitting member 352 using a connecting member 354. In some embodiments, the connecting member 354 includes a first portion 356 and a second portion 358. The first portion 356 is arranged on a first side of the second leg 320 and the second portion 358 is arranged on a second side of the second leg 320.

[0036] Each of the first portion 356 and the second portion 358 may include a vertical end 357 and an angled end 359. The vertical ends 357 of the first portion 356 and the second portion 258 are coupled to the seat track fitting member 352 and the angled ends 359 are coupled to the second leg 320. Further, the angled ends 359 of the first portion 356 and the second portion 258 may extend along the second angle 360 and abut the second leg 320.
