[0028]FIG. 1 illustrates an exemplary embodiment of an apparatus of the present invention. In the example illustrated, the apparatus is associated with a free weight 100 that may be lifted by a user. The apparatus includes a string sensor 10, which contains means for sensing and communicating the displacement of a free weight 100 relative to a sensor 10. The string sensor 10 is contained within a sensor housing 12. In an exemplary embodiment a sensor housing 12 is made of plastic, although in other embodiments other materials may be used. In many embodiments the components of the string sensor 10 will be sized so that the entire string sensor 10 and sensor housing 12 are portable and can easily be moved to different pieces of weight equipment by a user.
