Description

COMPOSITION FOR SALT REMOVAL AND CHELATING AGENTS Field of the Invention

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of salt buildup or salt deposit removal. More specifically, the present invention relates to compositions and methods for the prevention and removal of salt buildup while also preventing corrosion.

[0002] The present invention also relates to the field of chelation chemistry, and more specifically chelating agents. Background

[0003] There are many products involved in dealing with salt deposits and their removal and prevention. The removal of some salt deposits, such as calcium and magnesium carbonates, is often dealt with using acids. These acids and the corrosive nature of chloride ions in salty environments means that many products include corrosion inhibitors. Other components that can be beneficial can be included are detergents, wetting agents, or chelants.

[0004] Applications of these products include use on boats and boat motors, vehicles, storage tanks, pipelines, and household applications in showers and tubs. For example: the cleaning and removal of salt from boat motors after use. Any environment where salt buildup occurs requires some solution for removal. Many of these applications lead to the disposal of the product in the environment and therefore benefit by being biodegradable, non-toxic, and non-hazardous. In addition, many industries are increasingly interested in products that are bio-based.

[0005] One example of a product with a similar use is Salt Off® Concentrate, available from Star bright, Inc., Fort Lauderdale FL. Another is Salt-Away®, available from Salt-Away Products, Inc., Santa Ana, CA.

[0006] Chelation is the ability of a ligand to coordinate to a single metal ion through two or more ligation sites. Generally speaking, a chelating ligand has a much stronger coordination strength than a monodentate ligand with one ligation site. A chelant can be designed to precipitate or coagulate once the coordination has occurred, or can sequester and hold the metal ion in solution. A common example would be ethylenediaminetetra acetic acid (EDTA). EDTA is often applied to sequester iron or calcium containing materials under conditions where the salts would normally precipitate out and even potentially form a scale. Chelants are applied in textiles and paper to prevent metal ions from modifying the color of a dyed product, applied in food as a preservative that prevents catalytic oxidation of fats and oils, water softener, in ion- exchange chromatography. It is even applied in the scrubbing of things like hydrogen sulfide gas by pretreating the chelant with iron to make the sequestered iron salt and using that as a catalyst to yield elemental sulfur from hydrogen sulfide. It can also be used in the medical industry to sequester metal ions in a practice referred to as chelation therapy for treating things such as mercury or lead poisoning. [0056] Below, Example 1 is compared with Salt-Away®, a commercially available product with similar product descriptions such as salt removal and corrosion inhibition. It is used here as a benchmark for testing the efficacy of this invention.

[0057] Example 2 – Corrosion of Steel and Aluminum Plates

[0058] This example compares corrosion inhibition for an embodiment of the present invention, Example 1, with Salt-Away®.

[0059] Both Salt-Away® and Example 1 were applied at a 1:500 dilution. Corrosion is tested on SAE 1008 / 1010 steel panels and 2024 T3 Bare Aluminum. The solutions are prepared at a 1:500 dilution of the sample “as is” by weight.50mL is poured in a 100mL glass jar, the metal is placed half-submerged in the jar, closed tightly, and observed after 24 hours.

[0060] Panel 1 shows the results of Example 1 and aluminum. Panel 2 shows the results of Salt-Away® (Brand A) and aluminum. Panel 3 shows the results of Example 2 and steel. Panel 4 shows the results of Salt-Away® and steel. This example shows that Example 1 offers superior corrosion inhibition to what Salt Away offers for SAE 1008 / 1010 steel panels and 2024 T3 Bare Aluminum. See Fig.1.

[0061] Example 3: Dissolution of Calcium Carbonate

[0062] Calcium Carbonate (Hubercarb G260) is added to 100mL of stirred solution (undiluted) and given 10 minutes to clarify. If the solution clarifies, more calcium carbonate is added to the beaker. Example 1 dissolves (0.6g calcium carbonate) / (100mL undiluted solution), while Salt- Away® dissolves (<0.3g calcium carbonate) / (100mL undiluted solution). The results of this example show that Example 1 dissolves at least twice the mass of calcium carbonate as Salt- Away®.

[0063] Example 4: Chelation Study

[0064] The above two products are titrated with CaCl2 solution until a permanent haziness is achieved. Salt-Away® showed a haziness with 10.82 mg of CaCl2 / g of surfactant. Example 1 showed a haziness at 173.60 mg of CaCl2 / g of surfactant. This chelation study of calcium chloride showed a 16-fold increase in effectiveness for Example 1 Salt-Away®.

[0065] Example 5

[0066] This example further demonstrates chelation agents of the present invention. The following is a description of the chelation test of this example.

[0067] The resulting data is below: Chelation Value (mg CaCl2 / g

[0068] The examples show that a formulation of the present invention offers at least as effective if not vastly superior properties as the comparison without the addition of sulfamic acid. The compositions of the present invention show greater chelation, more effective corrosion inhibition, and a greater ability to dissolve calcium carbonate, which correlates to improved scale removal.

[0069] Additionally, the examples show that compounds of the present invention are effective chelation agents.

[0070] The compositions, processes, systems, and methods of the present invention are often best practiced by empirically determining the appropriate values of the operating parameters, orby conducting simulations to arrive at best design for a given application. Accordingly, all suitable modifications, combinations, and equivalents should be considered as falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
