Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to an organic peroxide formulation comprising a drying oil and a polymer composition comprising such an organic peroxide formulation, which can be used in particular for the manufacture of photovoltaic modules. The present invention is also applicable to articles obtainable by curing said polymer composition. Background Art
[0002] Solar modules (also known as photovoltaic modules) are gaining more and more interest due to their renewable and pollution-free nature in generating energy. Solar modules contain photovoltaic cells composed of photovoltaic components that generate a voltage when exposed to light.
[0003] Conventionally, in solar modules, photovoltaic cells are placed between an upper (or front) protective layer, also called a front sheet, typically a glass or plastic plate, and a rear protective panel, often made of plastic or glass, usually called a back sheet. Classically, photovoltaic cells are encapsulated by a polymeric material, called an encapsulant, applied as a film to either the front or both sides of the photovoltaic cells in order to assemble and bond the photovoltaic cells and the protective layer, such as the upper protective layer, usually made of glass, together to provide electrical insulation and protect the photovoltaic cells from the elements of the outdoor environment, especially moisture and UV radiation.
[0004] As encapsulants, materials based on ethylene polymers are generally used. In particular, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers are widely used because they can produce transparent materials that can be easily adhered to the substrate of the photovoltaic module while having a high resistivity. Other polymers that can be used to produce encapsulant materials include polyolefin elastomers (POE).
[0005] In order to obtain the thermomechanical properties required for such applications, in particular with regard to adhesion properties, creep resistance and resistance to degradation with respect to weather adversities, the polymer of the encapsulant must be crosslinked.
[0006] Photovoltaic modules are generally produced by a lamination process. There are several module technologies. In conventional modules, the encapsulant layer is located between the photovoltaic unit cell and the front glass protective layer, and the rear protective plate is made of other types of protective films. In the so-called "double glass technology", a transparent EVA or POE layer forms the top encapsulation layer (between the front glass protective layer and the unit cell), and a white film (often also made of EVA or POE) is located between the back of the unit cell and the rear glass protective plate. The laminated layers forming the module are then pressed, and the encapsulant layer is crosslinked (or cured) by heating at the same time as the pressing step or subsequently. The encapsulant layer is generally produced by an extrusion step.
[0007] If premature decomposition of the organic peroxide occurs during the extrusion step, the polymer composition used to form the encapsulant layer is susceptible to premature crosslinking over time in the barrel or head of the extruder in which it is processed, before the formation of the laminated structure. This phenomenon, which is called "scorching", leads to irregularities (unevenness, surface roughness) in the polymer sheet thus formed and intended to encapsulate the photovoltaic unit cells. The presence of these irregularities impairs the appearance and properties of the photovoltaic module. In addition, in some cases, pressure can also accumulate in the extruder, which requires interruption of the extrusion process and, as a result, production efficiency slows down.
[0008] Therefore, some peroxide formulations have been developed with anti-scorch properties.
[0009] For example, document WO 2019 / 115975 relates to the use of a combination of two different monoperoxycarbonates for crosslinking polyolefin elastomers.
[0010] Documents WO 2016 / 149898 and WO 2018 / 046700 describe curable compositions comprising ethylene polymers, monoperoxycarbonates and tertiary alkyl hydroperoxides in specific amounts.
[0011] In addition to scorch protection, it is also desirable to achieve a high crosslink density. Indeed, if the crosslink density is too low, the resulting material may suffer from, among other things, insufficient tear and break resistance and may flow over time due to the high temperatures reachable by the upper surface of the photovoltaic module. However, the anti-scorch compositions disclosed in the prior art do not always allow excellent crosslink densities to be achieved. It is also preferred that once the laminate structure is formed and heated above the peroxide decomposition temperature, crosslinking proceeds rapidly to improve production efficiency.
[0012] Therefore, there is a need for an organic peroxide formulation that allows for reduced scorch while providing good crosslink density and rapid crosslinking. Summary of the invention

[0119] Polymer composition
[0120] The present invention also relates to a composition comprising at least one polymer and the above-described organic peroxide formulation (such composition is also referred to herein as a "polymer composition").
[0121] Therefore, the present invention particularly relates to a composition comprising:
[0122] - at least one polymer,
[0123] - at least one organic peroxide having a one-hour half-life temperature of from 90°C to 130°C,
[0124] - at least one dry oil, and
[0125] - optionally at least one silane component,
[0126] Wherein, the weight ratio of the drying oil to the organic peroxide is less than or equal to 0.60.
[0127] The components of the organic peroxide formulation (organic peroxide, drying oil, optional silane component, optional adjuvant, optional other additives, optional free radical scavenger), and their weight ratios may be as described in the previous section.
[0128] The polymer of the polymer composition of the present invention is preferably an ethylene polymer. The ethylene polymer may be an ethylene homopolymer, or preferably an ethylene copolymer. Examples of ethylene copolymers are those made from ethylene monomers and at least one other monomer selected from the following: hydrocarbons having at least one degree of unsaturation, such as methylene, propylene, butylene, pentene, hexene, heptene, octene, butadiene, isoprene and styrene; acrylic monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, alkyl methacrylates and alkyl acrylates, wherein the alkyl group may be selected from, for example, methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl; and vinyl monomers such as vinyl acetate and vinyl butyrate. [0192] Example
[0193] The following examples illustrate the present invention but do not limit it.
[0194] Example 1
[0195] By POE polymer (14MI, from DOW Chemical Company), 0.75 phr OO-tert-butyl-O-2-ethylhexyl-monoperoxycarbonate (TBEC) ( The first base composition was prepared by mixing 0.3 phr of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (TBEC, from Arkema), 0.3 phr of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570, from Sigma-Aldrich) and 0.5 phr of triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) (from Ourchem) in a 125 mL bottle. The mixture was then heated in an oven at 40° C. for 7.5 hours. During the heating step, the mixture needed to be shaken every 2-3 hours.
[0196] Phr means "parts per hundred rubber", and thus in the present example means "parts by weight per 100 parts of polymer POE".
[0197] OO-tert-butyl-O-2-ethylhexyl-monoperoxycarbonate has a one hour half-life temperature of 121°C.
[0198] A second base composition was prepared in the same manner as the first base composition except that 0.75 phr of 0-tert-amyl O-(2-ethylhexyl) monoperoxycarbonate (TAEC) ( TAEC, available from Arkema) was used in place of 0.75 phr of TBEC.
[0199] OO-tert-Amyl O-(2-ethylhexyl)monoperoxycarbonate has a one hour half-life temperature of 117°C.
[0200] As shown in the following table, a certain amount of tung oil (from Anhui Refined Oil and Fat Co., Ltd.), odorless mineral spirit (synthetic isoparaffinic hydrocarbons, from Idemitsu kosan Co., Ltd.) or refined tung oil (from Anhui Refined Oil and Fat Co., Ltd.) was added to these base compositions. The tung oil used in the examples had a saponification value of 193 (determined according to GB / T5534-1995) and an iodine value of 167 g / 100 g (determined according to GB / T5532-2008).
[0201] [Table 1]
[0202]
[0203] Composition Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 are compositions according to the present invention; Composition Nos. 1, 2 and 8 are comparative compositions. Composition Nos. 1 to 7 comprise TBEC as the organic peroxide; Compositions 8 and 9 comprise TAEC as the organic peroxide.
[0204] The sample of about 2 to 3 grams of the composition produced in this way is placed on the plate on the rubber processing analyzer (RPA) of the model type EKT-2003RPA-N of EKTRON TEK.CO., LTD, which can measure the curing properties of the sample, and comprises a software for analyzing the results. Each of the samples is placed in a temperature-controlled cavity between two plates, and the plate vibration at its bottom is to apply cyclic stress or strain to the sample, and the die head at the top is connected to a torque sensor to measure the torque response of the sample to deformation. Under this condition, the sample surface is protected from the presence of air (and therefore oxygen) by the metal surface of the plate. The change of rigidity over time is recorded continuously. The rigidity of the sample increases along with crosslinking.
[0205] In particular, RPA can provide L (minimum torque), M H (maximum torque), t S1 (time from minimum torque to torque increase of 1dN.m) and tc 90 (reaching 90% of M H -M L The calculated value of the time of the cured state) as defined in international standards (such as ASTM D5289). s1 represents the scorch time. From these data, the relative degree of crosslinking M can be determined H -M L (or cross-link density).
[0206] The RPA was operated at 145°C with an oscillation amplitude (degree of deformation) of 0.5°, an oscillation frequency of 1.667 and a strain value of 7 applied to the sample for 30 minutes, except for Examples 10 and 11 where the test was conducted for 45 minutes.
[0207] The results are shown in the table below.
[0208] [Table 2]
[0209]
[0210] The compositions of the present invention comprising tung oil resulted in longer scorch times compared to compositions containing no oil or containing mineral spirits. Thus, tung oil is effective as a scorch protection agent. The mixture was then heated in an oven at 40° C. for 6.5 h. During the heating step, the mixture needed to be shaken every 2-3 hours.
[0213] In the present embodiment, phr means "parts by weight based on 100 parts of polymer EVA".
[0214] Another base composition was prepared in the same manner except that 0.6 phr of 0-tert-amyl O-(2-ethylhexyl) monoperoxycarbonate (TAEC) ( TAEC, available from Arkema) was substituted for 0.6 phr of TBEC.

[0216] Yet another base composition was prepared in the same manner as the first base composition, except that 90 wt % TAEC ( TAEC) and 10 wt% tert-butyl peroxy 2-ethylhexanoate (TBPO) (from Arkema 26) instead of 0.6 phr of TBEC.
[0217] Tert-butyl peroxy 2-ethylhexanoate has a one hour half-life temperature of 95°C.
[0218] Yet another base composition was prepared in the same manner as the first base composition except that 0.75 of TBEC was used instead of 0.6 phr of TBEC.
[0219] To each of these compositions, tung oil or castor oil (Castor Oil from ADANI) was either added or not added as shown in the table below.
[0220] Castor oil, having an iodine value of 85 g / 100 g and a saponification index of 180 mg KOH / g, determined as described above.
[0221] [Table 3]
[0222]
[0223]
[0224] Composition Nos. 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 are compositions according to the invention; Composition Nos. 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 are comparative compositions.
[0225] The crosslinking properties of composition Nos. 10 to 13 were determined as described in Example 1 with a curing time of 30 minutes.
[0226] The crosslinking properties of compositions No. 14 to 17 were determined as described in Example 1, but at three different temperatures: 145° C., 130° C. and 110° C. The RPA measurements were performed for 45 minutes. The temperatures of 145 and 130° C. simulate the conditions of the lamination process (e.g., for the manufacture of photovoltaic modules); the temperature of 110° C. simulates the conditions of the extrusion process (e.g., for forming a film before the lamination process).
[0227] The crosslinking properties of composition Nos. 18 to 20 were determined as described in Example 1 with a curing time of 45 minutes.
[0228] The results are shown in the following table.
[0229] [Table 4]
[0230]
[0231]
[0232] ND = Not Determined This indicates that no increase of 1 dN.m was achieved during the 45 minute duration of the measurement.
[0233] A significant increase in scorch time was observed with the compositions of the present invention at operating temperatures of 145°C and 130°C, compared to compositions without tung oil, regardless of the peroxide used, while the crosslink density remained good.
[0234] Furthermore, it can be seen that at an operating temperature of 110° C., little crosslinking occurs through the composition of the present invention. This is desirable because during the extrusion step in which the composition is shaped, crosslinking preferably does not occur or substantially does not occur. In contrast, the comparative composition exhibits a higher crosslink density at 110° C., indicating that the presence of tung oil makes it possible to reduce crosslinking at a temperature of 110° C.
[0235] Comparing Example 20 with Examples 18 and 19, no scorch protection was observed when castor oil was used, and the crosslink density was even lower than the counterexample without any oil.
