Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to electric fluid heaters, and more particularly, the present invention relates to electric fluid heaters for vehicles. Background Art

[0002] Fig. 1a and Fig. 1b show isometric views of a conventional electric heater 1. The conventional electric heater 1 includes a housing 2, a heater coil 6 and a printed circuit board (PCB) 8. The housing 2 includes side walls 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d and a cover 2e and a base 2f. The housing 2 also includes a channel 4 formed thereon for accommodating the electric heater coil 6. The channel 4 is formed on a side that can be accessed by removing the cover 2e. One end of the heater coil 6 is used as a positive terminal, and the other end of the heater coil 6 is used as a negative terminal so that current flows through the heater coil 6 and heats the heater coil 6. The power supply of the heater coil 6 is controlled by the PCB 8 contained in the housing 2. The housing 2 also includes an inlet port 3a and an outlet port 3b for fluid in and out. The fluid entering the interior of the housing 2 flows around the heater coil 6 contained in the channel 4 to absorb heat from the heater coil 6 and is discharged from the housing 2 after undergoing heat exchange and absorbing heat from the heater coil 6.

[0003] The channel 4 typically accommodates a single heater coil 6, however, the heating capacity of the electric fluid heater 1 using a single heater coil 6 is insufficient to heat the fluid. The heating capacity of the electric fluid heater 1 is proportional to the surface area of the heater coil 6, which depends on the length of the heater coil 6 and the number of heater coils 6. In order to increase the length of the heater coil 6 within a limited packaging space, the channel 4 and the heater coil 6 accommodated in the channel 4 follow a tortuous path with several turns. In order to further increase the surface area of the heater coil 6, few prior arts suggest using multiple heater coils 6 in the limited space inside the channel 4, however, packaging and wiring of multiple heater coils 6 in the limited space inside the channel 4 is a problem. In addition, in the case where multiple heater coils 6 are packaged in a limited space inside the channel 4, the heater coils 6 need to be kept spaced apart from each other and from the inner wall of the channel to prevent short circuits.

[0004] Therefore, there is a need for an electric heater with multiple heater coils that can be arranged in the limited space inside the channel without the risk of short circuiting. In addition, there is a need for an electric heater that solves the packaging and wiring problems associated with multiple heater coils arranged in the limited space inside the channel. Summary of the invention

[0005] It is an object of the present invention to eliminate the disadvantages associated with conventional electric heaters, particularly the wiring and packaging problems associated with packaging multiple heater coils within the confined space inside a channel.

[0006] Another object of the present invention is to provide an electric heater that ensures thermal insulation between a plurality of heater coils and thermal insulation between the heater coils and a channel.

[0007] Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an electric heater that has a relatively longer service life and requires relatively less maintenance than conventional electric heaters.

[0008] In this specification, some elements or parameters may be indexed, such as first element and second element. In this case, unless otherwise specified, such indexing is only used to distinguish and name similar but not identical elements. The concept of priority should not be inferred from such indexing, because these terms can be interchanged without departing from the present invention. In addition, such indexing does not imply any order of installation or use of the elements of the present invention.

[0017] Furthermore, the electric heater comprises a sleeve made of insulating material which is arranged between the heater coil and the respective retaining clip.

[0018] In particular, the sleeve is made of a ceramic material.

[0019] The retaining clamp includes at least one clamping portion defined between a pair of clamping jaws disposed between a pair of pusher jaws that push against the inner wall of the channel to urge the clamping jaws toward each other.

[0023] Typically, opposing trough portions formed on respective first legs define a clamping portion therebetween.

[0024] Preferably, the clamping portion holds the heater coil centered relative to the width "w" of the channel.

[0025] Furthermore, the clamping portion is sized smaller than the diameter of the corresponding heater coil received therein.

[0026] Furthermore, the clamping part comprises a lining of insulating material arranged at an inner wall thereof.

[0027] According to one embodiment, the retaining clip includes a plurality of clamping portions evenly spaced relative to one another, each clamping portion receiving and retaining a single heater coil therein to be able to retain a plurality of heater coils spaced apart from one another.

[0028] Typically, the plurality of gripping portions are equally distributed on opposite sides of a plane passing through the center of the depth "d" of the channel.

[0034] According to a preferred embodiment, the electric fluid heater comprises at least two heater coils, and the retaining clip retains and maintains the two heater coils spaced apart from each other.

[0035] Specifically, the retaining clip engages the two heater coils within the channel and retains the two heater coils in a spaced relationship relative to the inner wall of the channel.

[0036] Typically, each heater coil includes a main portion and a connecting portion orthogonal to the main portion.

[0037] More specifically, the major portion is at least 80%, in particular 90%, of the total length of the respective heater coil.

[0038] Furthermore, the connecting portions extend parallel to each other. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0049] Although the invention has been explained in terms of an electric fluid heater for use in a vehicle, the invention is applicable to any vehicular or non-vehicular application where a current carrying heater coil needs to be packaged and routed within the confined space of a passageway without the risk of short circuiting.

[0050] Figure 2 An isometric view of an electric fluid heater 100 is shown in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. Figure 3 An isometric view of the electric fluid heater 100 is shown without the cover 10 h for depicting internal details such as the channel 10 a formed in one side of the housing 10 of the electric fluid heater 100 . Figure 4 An isometric view of the electric fluid heater 100 is shown without the side walls and cover 10g. The electric fluid heater 100 includes a housing 10, a plurality of heater coils 20, an inlet nozzle 12, and an outlet nozzle 14.

[0051] Reference Figure 2, the housing 10 includes a pair of opposite front walls 10c and rear walls 10d, a pair of opposite side walls 10e and 10f, and a pair of opposite top covers 10g and bottom covers 10h. The walls and covers together define a housing for accommodating the PCB 50, the channel 10a, and the fluid to be heated around the channel 10a. The top cover 10g and the bottom cover 10h are removable so as to enter the interior of the housing 10 for inspection and maintenance. The housing 10 is formed with a channel 10a. The channel 10a is preferably formed on one side thereof. However, the present invention is not limited to any particular configuration of the housing 10, as long as the housing 10 defines a housing for accommodating the PCB 50, the channel 10a, and the fluid to be heated around the channel 10a accommodating the heater coil 20. The PCB 50 controls the heating of the heater coil 20 by controlling the current supplied to the heater coil 20. In addition, the channel 10a can be formed on any side of the housing 10 or extend to multiple sides. The channel 10a has a rectangular cross section. However, the present invention is not limited to any specific configuration, placement, and number of channels formed on the housing 10, as long as the channel accommodates and securely holds the heater coil 20 therein so that heat exchange can be performed between the fluid flowing around the channel 10a and the heater coil 20 accommodated inside the channel 10a. The inlet nozzle 12 and the outlet nozzle 14 are formed on one side of the housing, preferably the side wall 10e of the housing 10. The side wall 10d also includes at least one electrical connector 16a and 16b for supplying power to the heater coil 20 via the PCB 50 after being regulated by the PCB 50. More specifically, the power is transmitted from the electrical connectors 16a and 16b to the PCB 50, and thereafter transmitted to the resistor inside the heater coil 20 after being regulated by the PCB 50. The inlet nozzle 12 is used to allow the fluid to enter the interior of the housing 10, specifically, the inlet nozzle 12 supplies the fluid to the fluid flow channel inside the housing 10 around the heater coil 20 accommodated inside the channel 10a to extract heat from the heater coil 20 accommodated in the channel 10a. More specifically, the fluid entering the housing 10 via the inlet nozzle 12 is supplied to the annular space between the heater coil 20 and the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. The outlet nozzle 14 is used to discharge the fluid from the electric fluid heater 100 after the fluid has undergone heat exchange and absorbed heat from the heater coil 20. However, the present invention is not limited to the number and placement of the inlet nozzle 12, the outlet nozzle 14, and the electrical connectors 16a and 16b.

[0052] One end of the heater coil 20 is connected to the positive terminal and the other end is connected to the negative terminal to allow current to flow, thereby heating the heater coil 20. Preferably, each heater coil 20 includes a main portion 20a and a connecting portion 20b orthogonal to the main portion 20a. Typically, the main portion 20a is at least 80%, in particular 90%, of the total length of the corresponding heater coil 20. The connecting portions 20b extend parallel to each other. Preferably, the main portion 20a is accommodated in the channel 10a. The heating capacity of the electric fluid heater 100 is proportional to the surface area of the heater coil 20, which depends on the length of the heater coil 20 and the number of heater coils 20. In order to increase the length of the heater coil 20 accommodated in the limited packaging space of the channel 10a, the channel 10a and the heater coil 20 accommodated in the channel 10a are along a curved path with several turns. In order to further increase the surface area of the heater coil, a plurality of heater coils 20 are arranged in the limited space of the channel 10a. The heater coils 20 need to be securely held inside the channel 10a in a configuration spaced apart from each other and from the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. Specifically, at least one retaining clip 30 is disposed inside the channel 10a to hold the heater coils 20 inside the channel 10a. Figure 5 , the retaining clip 30 holds and maintains the heater coil 20 at a desired spacing relative to the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. Specifically, the retaining clip 30 includes a plurality of clamping portions 33 evenly spaced relative to each other, each clamping portion 33 accommodating and retaining a single heater coil 20 therein, so as to enable the plurality of heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other to be retained in a limited space within the channel 10a. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of retaining clips 30 are disposed at regular intervals inside the channel 10a to keep the plurality of heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other and from the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. According to a preferred embodiment, the electric fluid heater 100 includes at least two heater coils 20, and the retaining clip 30 holds and maintains the two heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other. Specifically, the retaining clip 30 engages with the two heater coils 20 within the channel 10a and holds the heater coils 20 in a spaced relationship relative to the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. Referring to Figure 4, the heater coil 20 has corresponding main parts arranged along corresponding parallel planes and adjacent to each other, and the spacing between adjacent heater coils is at least 3mm. With this configuration, the heater coils 20 are accommodated in the channel 10a in a spaced relationship relative to each other and relative to the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. The heater coil 20 releases heat to the fluid contained in the channel 10a and around the heater coil 20. In order to increase the length of the heater coil 20 contained in the limited packaging space of the channel 10a, the channel 10a and the heater coil 20 contained in the channel 10a are along a curved path with several turns. In order to further increase the surface area of the heater coil, a greater number of heater coils 20 are arranged in the limited space of the channel 10a. In order to obtain sufficient spacing and solve packaging and wiring problems, the heater coils 20 are arranged adjacent to each other, and the spacing between adjacent heater coils is at least 3mm. The main parts of the corresponding heater coils 20 are arranged on top of each other inside the channel 10a.

[0053] Specifically, at least one retaining clip 30 is disposed within the channel 10a to retain the heater coil 20 within the channel 10a. More specifically, referring to Figure 5 , the retaining clip 30 holds the heater coil 20 at a desired spacing relative to the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of retaining clips 30 are disposed in the channel 10a to keep the plurality of heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other and from the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. However, the present invention is not limited to the number and placement of the retaining clips 30, as long as the retaining clips 30 are capable of keeping the heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other and from the inner wall 10c of the channel 10a when accommodated in the channel 10a. The channel 10a is configured so that the depth "d" of each channel 10a is at least 2.5 times the diameter of the heater coil 20 when two heater coils 20 are disposed adjacent to each other up and down inside the channel 10a. Specifically, the depth of the channel 10a is based on the number of heater coils 20 disposed adjacent to each other up and down in the channel 10a. In addition, the channel 10a is configured so that the width "w" of each channel 10a is at least 1.5 times the diameter of the heater coil 20. With this configuration, the heater coils 20 are evenly spaced relative to each other along their lengths, and the heater coils 20 are spaced apart from the inner wall 10b of the passage 10a. Figure 5, the heater coil 20 is centered relative to the width "w" of the channel 10a. Each heater coil 20 is on the opposite side of the center of the depth "d" of the channel 10a. With this configuration of the channel 10a that accommodates the heater coils 20, the heater coils 20 are sufficiently spaced apart from each other and from the inner wall of the channel 10a. The electric fluid heater 100 also includes an arrangement for electrically insulating the heater coils 20 relative to each other and the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. The arrangement includes a sleeve 40 made of an insulating material, which is disposed between the heater coil 20 and the corresponding retaining clip 30. Typically, the sleeve 40 is made of a ceramic material. According to one embodiment, either the inner wall of the retaining clip 30 or the outer wall of the heater coil 20 retained in the retaining clip 30 is formed by a lining of a ceramic material. However, the present invention is not limited to any particular arrangement for insulating the heater coil 20 relative to the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a.

[0054] Specifically, the retaining clip 30 includes a plurality of clamping portions 33 that are evenly spaced relative to each other, each clamping portion 33 accommodating and retaining a single heater coil 20 therein, so as to enable the retention of a plurality of heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other in a limited space within the channel 10a. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of retaining clips 30 are disposed at regular intervals inside the channel 10a to retain a plurality of heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other and from the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. According to a preferred embodiment, the electric fluid heater 100 includes at least two heater coils 20, and the retaining clip 30 retains and maintains the two heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other. Specifically, the retaining clip 30 engages with the two heater coils 20 within the channel 10a and retains the two heater coils 20 in a spaced relationship relative to the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a.

[0055] Reference Figure 6 and Figure 7 The retaining clamp 30 includes at least one clamping portion 33 defined between a pair of clamping jaws 32 disposed between a pair of pushing jaws 34. The pushing jaws 34 push against the inner wall 10b of the passage 10a to push the clamping jaws 32 toward each other.

[0056] Typically, the clamping pliers 32 include first legs 32a and 32b connected at first ends thereof, and second ends of the first legs 32a and 32b are connected to the pusher pliers 34. Specifically, at least one of the first legs 32a and 32b has a wave profile with a first crest portion 33c and a second crest portion 33d. The first crest portion 33c is disposed between adjacent trough portions 33a formed on one of the first legs 32a. The second crest portion 33d is disposed between adjacent trough portions 33b formed on the other first leg 32b. The opposing trough portions 33a and 33b formed on the respective first legs 32a and 32b define clamping portions 33c and 33d therebetween. Preferably, the clamping portion 33 holds the heater coil 20 centered relative to the width "w" of the channel 10a. In addition, the size of the clamping portion 33 is smaller than the diameter of the respective heater coil 20 accommodated therein.

[0057] According to an embodiment, a plurality of clamping portions 33 are formed to be evenly spaced relative to each other. Each of the plurality of clamping portions 33 accommodates and holds a separate heater coil 20 therein, thereby maintaining the plurality of heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other. In one example, the plurality of clamping portions 33 are evenly distributed on opposite sides of a plane passing through the center of the depth "d" of the channel 10a. Specifically, the clamping portions 33 have the same size and thus hold heater coils 20 of equal diameter. However, the present invention is not limited to the configuration, number, and placement of the clamping portions, as long as the clamping portions are suitable for holding and maintaining the plurality of heater coils 20 spaced apart from each other and from the inner wall of the channel 10a.

[0058] The pusher pliers 34 include second legs 34a and 34b, wherein the first ends of the second legs 34a and 34b are connected to the corresponding second ends of the first legs 32a and 32b, and the second ends of the second legs 34a and 34b are free ends, which push against the inner wall 10b of the passage 10a. In addition, at least one of the second legs 34a and 34b has a straight profile. Preferably, at least one of the second legs 34a and 34b is forked from the corresponding first legs 32a and 32b. Typically, at least one of the second legs 34a and 34b is bent inwardly. Specifically, at least one of the second legs 34a and 34b is formed with a groove 34c extending through the bend. This configuration of the pusher pliers 34 helps the pusher pliers 34 to be easily inserted into the passage 20. In addition, the grooves 34c provided on the second legs 34a and 34b provide flexibility to the second legs 34a and 34b so that the second legs 34a and 34b can be easily bent, thereby urging the second legs 34a and 34b to abut against the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a and urging the first legs 32a and 32b toward each other so that the heater coil 20 is clamped in the clamping portion 33a.

[0059] However, the present invention is not limited to the configuration, number and placement of the retaining clips 30, as long as the retaining clips 30 are capable of keeping the heater coils 20 spaced apart from the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a when the heater coils 20 are accommodated in the channel 10a. The channel 10a is configured such that the depth "d" of each channel 10a is at least 2.5 times the diameter of the heater coil 20 when two heater coils are arranged below each other. Specifically, the depth of the channel 10a is based on the number of heater coils 20 arranged adjacent to each other along the same plane. In addition, the channel 10a is configured such that the width "w" of each channel 10a is at least 1.5 times the diameter of the heater coil 20. With this configuration, the heater coils 20 are evenly spaced apart relative to each other along their lengths, and the heater coils 20 are spaced apart from the inner wall 10b of the channel 10a. Refer to Figure 4 , the heater coil 20 is centered relative to the width "w" of the channel 10a. Each heater coil 20 is on opposite sides of the center of the depth "d" of the channel 10a. The electric fluid heater 100 also includes an arrangement for electrically insulating the heater coils 20 relative to each other and to the walls of the channel 10a. The arrangement includes a sleeve 40 made of an insulating material, which is disposed between the heater coil 20 and the corresponding retaining clip 30. Typically, the sleeve 40 is made of a ceramic material. According to one embodiment, the inner wall of the retaining clip 30, in particular, any one of the clamping portion 33 of the retaining clip 30 or the outer wall of the heater coil 20 retained in the retaining clip 30 is formed by a lining of ceramic material. Specifically, the clamping portion 33 includes an insulating material lining disposed at its inner wall. However, the present invention is not limited to any specific arrangement for insulating the heater coil 20 relative to the inner wall of the retaining clip 30.

[0060] In any case, the present invention cannot and should not be limited to the embodiments specifically described herein, as other embodiments are possible. The present invention will extend to any equivalent means and any combination of means on technical operations.
