[0004] The invention is therefore based on the object of providing an improved rack and an improved method for producing a rack for a steering system of a motor vehicle, in which a faultless welded connection between the base body and the toothed element is made possible.

[0005] The problem is solved with a rack for a steering system of a motor vehicle having the features of patent claims 8 and 12. The problem is further solved with a method for producing a rack for a steering system of a motor vehicle having the features of patent claims 1 and 5. Disclosure of the invention

[0006] The present invention provides a rack for a steering system of a motor vehicle with an elongated base body and a toothed element, wherein a width of the toothed element is less than or equal to a diameter of the base body, wherein the base body is formed from a material with a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element in a hardened edge layer of the toothed element, and wherein the base body has at least one projection on its surface, wherein the toothed element is arranged on the surface of the base body in such a way that the toothed element rests against the at least one projection of the base body, and wherein the toothed element is welded to the base body in such a way that a weld seam has a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element in the hardened edge layer of the toothed element.

[0007] The invention further provides a rack for a steering system of a motor vehicle, comprising an elongated base body, a toothed element and at least one connecting element arranged between the base body and the toothed element, wherein a width of the toothed element is less than or equal to a diameter of the base body, wherein the base body and the at least one connecting element are formed from a material having a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element in a hardened edge layer of the toothed element, wherein the at least one connecting element is welded to the base body, and wherein the toothed element is welded to the base body in such a way that a weld seam has a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element in the hardened edge layer of the toothed element.

[0008] The present invention further provides a method for producing a rack for a steering system of a motor vehicle. The method comprises providing an elongated base body and a toothed element, wherein a width of the toothed element is less than or equal to a diameter of the base body, and wherein the base body is made of a material with a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element in a hardened edge layer of the toothed element, and wherein the base body has at least one projection on its surface.

[0009] The method further comprises arranging the toothed element on the surface of the base body, wherein the toothed element bears against the at least one projection of the base body. The method further comprises welding the toothed element to the base body, wherein, during the creation of a weld seam, first a predetermined volume of material of the at least one projection of the base body and subsequently a predetermined volume of material of the toothed element are melted, wherein the weld seam is formed with a lower carbon content than the material of the toothed element in the hardened surface layer of the toothed element.

[0010] The invention further provides a method for producing a rack for a steering system of a motor vehicle. The method comprises providing an elongated base body, a toothed element, and at least one connecting element to which the base body and the toothed element can be fastened, wherein a width of the toothed element is less than or equal to a diameter of the base body, and wherein the base body and the at least one connecting element are made of a material with a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element in a hardened edge layer of the toothed element. The method further comprises arranging the toothed element on the surface of the at least one connecting element. The method further comprises welding the toothing element to the at least one connecting element, wherein, when setting a weld seam, first a predetermined volume of material of the at least one connecting element and then a predetermined volume of material of the toothing element are melted, wherein the weld seam is formed with a low carbon content as the material of the toothing element in the hardened edge layer of the toothing element.

[0011] The method further comprises welding the toothed element to the base body.

[0012] One idea of the present invention is to provide the base body with at least one projection, enabling the weld to be made first through the projection of the base body and then into the gear element when welding the base body. Because the gear element is hardened in a surface layer region, it is possible to form the weld seam in such a way that it extends through the projection of the base body, the hardened surface layer region of the gear element, and beyond it to a defined penetration depth into the gear element.

[0013] This advantageously allows for a material mixing of the gearing element and the base body to occur in the region of the weld seam when welding the gearing element to the base body. The weld seam thus formed has an acceptable carbon content, which is located in the region of a carbon content of the base body and / or a carbon content of the gearing element in an area excluding or outside the hardened surface layer area of the gearing element. Thus, a crack-free weld seam can advantageously be provided for connecting the gearing element to the base body of the rack.

[0014] Advantageous embodiments and further developments emerge from the subclaims and from the description with reference to the figures.

[0015] According to a preferred development, the weld seam extends through the at least one projection of the base body, through the hardened edge layer of the toothed element, and a predetermined penetration depth beyond the hardened edge layer of the toothed element into the toothed element, wherein the weld seam has a mixing ratio of the materials of the base body and the toothed element with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2%. Due to the low carbon content of ≤ 0.2% of the weld seam, a defect-free, i.e., crack- and distortion-free, weld seam can thus advantageously be formed.

[0016] According to a further preferred development, it is provided that the base body is made of steel with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2% and the toothing element is made of steel, preferably case-hardened steel or tempered steel, with a carbon content in a hardened surface layer of the toothing element of > 0.2%, preferably between 0.21% and 1%.

[0017] Although the carbon content of the hardened surface layer of the gear element is in a range that is conventionally not suitable for producing a welded joint, a defect-free welded joint between the base body and the gear element can still be provided.

[0018] According to a further preferred development, the toothed element is pressed into the base body, wherein the toothed element is positively connected to the base body in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction of the toothed element. Pressing the toothed element into the base body thus has the advantage that, provided the base body is inserted into a corresponding mounting device, the base body is thereby deformed to form corresponding projections.

[0019] Furthermore, there is the additional advantage that the toothing element, when pressed into the base body, is positively connected to the base body both in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction of the toothing element.

[0020] According to a further preferred development, it is provided that the base body and the at least one connecting element are made of steel with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2%, and the toothing element is made of steel, preferably case-hardened steel or heat-treated steel, with a carbon content in a hardened surface layer of the toothing element of > 0.2%, preferably between 0.21% and 1%. Due to the low carbon content of ≤ 0.2% of the weld seam, a defect-free, i.e., crack- and distortion-free, weld seam can thus advantageously be formed.

[0021] According to a further preferred development, it is provided that the at least one connecting element has a substantially flat upper side facing the toothed element, wherein the toothed element has a substantially flat underside facing the at least one connecting element, wherein the toothed element is positively connected to the at least one connecting element, and wherein an underside of the at least one connecting element has a contour adapted to a surface of the base body. The provision of the at least one connecting element thus has the advantage that the toothed element can be formed with a flat underside. Furthermore, the upper side of the at least one connecting element can be formed such that it enables a positive connection with the toothed element.

[0022] According to a further preferred development, the weld seam extends through the at least one connecting element, through the hardened surface layer of the toothed element, and a predetermined penetration depth beyond the hardened surface layer of the toothed element into the toothed element, wherein the weld seam has a mixing ratio of the materials of the at least one connecting element and the toothed element with a carbon content of ≥ 0.2%. This results in the advantage that, despite the hardened surface layer of the toothed element, a flawless weld seam can be produced between the at least one connecting element and the toothed element.

[0023] According to a further preferred development, it is provided that a penetration path of the weld seam through the at least one projection of the base body is adjusted by providing the at least one projection of the base body with a predetermined thickness and a penetration depth of the weld seam into the toothing element such that a mixing ratio of the materials of the base body and the toothing element in the region of the weld seam with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2% is established. Thus, the penetration path of the weld seam through the at least one projection of the base body and through the corresponding layers of the toothing element can be adjusted such that an optimal result can be achieved with regard to the weld seam, so that it has a carbon content of ≤ 0.2%.

[0024] According to a further preferred development, the welding of the gear element to the base body is carried out using a laser welding device, wherein a laser beam from the laser welding device first penetrates the projection of the base body and then penetrates into the gear element to a predetermined penetration depth. The use of a laser welding device is therefore particularly advantageous because it allows the relevant process parameters, such as a penetration angle and / or a penetration depth of the laser beam into the base body and the gear element, to be adjusted as desired.

[0025] According to a further preferred development, it is provided that in order to form the at least one projection of the base body, the toothing element is pressed into the base body, wherein a press-in section of the toothing element is designed such that, when pressed into the base body, the press-in section deforms the base body such that the at least one projection is formed. Pressing the toothing element into the base body thus has the advantage that, on the one hand, the at least one projection of the base body can be formed, which is subsequently used to weld the base body to the toothing element, and, on the other hand, pressing the toothing element into the base body has the advantage that a positive connection between the toothing element and the base body can be established.

[0026] According to a further preferred development, it is provided that a penetration path of the weld seam through the at least one connecting element by providing the at least one connecting element with a predetermined thickness and a penetration depth of the weld seam into the toothing element are set such that a mixing ratio of the materials of the at least one connecting element and the toothing element in the region of the weld seam with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2% is established.

[0027] The penetration path of the weld seam through the at least one connecting element and the penetration depth of the weld seam into the toothing element can thus be advantageously adjusted in such a way that an optimal mixing ratio of the materials of the at least one connecting element and the toothing element is achieved in the region of the weld seam, so that the weld seam can still be formed with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2% despite the hardened surface layer of the toothing element.

[0028] According to a further preferred development, the welding of the toothed element to the at least one connecting element is carried out using a laser welding device, wherein a laser beam from the laser welding device first penetrates the at least one connecting element and then penetrates into the toothed element to a predetermined penetration depth. The use of a laser welding device is particularly advantageous in this case because, within this device, relevant process parameters such as a penetration angle and / or a penetration depth of the laser beam can be adjusted according to specific requirements.

[0029] The described designs and further training courses can be combined as desired.

[0036] The rack 10 for the steering system of a motor vehicle comprises an elongated base body 12 and a toothed element 14. The toothed element 14 is arranged on a surface of the base body 12. In the present embodiment, the base body 12 has a substantially cylindrical shape.

[0037] Alternatively, the base body can have another suitable shape, such as an elliptical or angular shape. In the present embodiment, the toothed element 14 is designed such that it has the toothing on its upper side and two tapered support elements 14a, 14b on its underside facing the base body. [0038] Fig. 2 shows a cross-sectional view of the rack for the steering system of the motor vehicle according to the first embodiment of the invention.

[0039] In Fig. 2, the toothed element 14, in particular the support elements 14a, 14b, is pressed into the base body 12. Because the base body 12 is clamped in a holding device 22 having a corresponding negative shape, the projections 16a, 16b can be formed by pressing the support elements 14a, 14b into the base body 12.

[0040] The base body 12 is preferably made of steel with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2% and the toothing element is made of steel, preferably case-hardened steel, with a carbon content in a (in Fig. 2 not shown) hardened edge layer of the toothing element 14 of > 0.2%.

[0041] The projections 16a, 16b formed by pressing the toothed element 14 into the base body further ensure that the toothed element 14 is positively connected to the base body 12 both in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction of the toothed element 14.

[0042] Fig. 3 shows a cross-sectional view of the rack for the steering system of the motor vehicle in a pre-assembled state according to the first embodiment of the invention.

[0043] The toothing element 14 is preferably positioned centrally with respect to a central longitudinal axis ML of the base body 12, so that the support elements 14a, 14b of the toothing element 14 each have an equal distance from both a center of the toothing element 14 and the central longitudinal axis ML of the base body 12.

[0044] Fig. 4 shows a cross-sectional view of the rack for the steering system of the motor vehicle according to the first embodiment of the invention.

[0045] In Fig. 4, the toothed element 14 is shown in a state pressed into the base body 12. It can be seen that the projections 16a, 16b of the base body 12 are formed by the pressing.

[0046] Fig. 5 shows an enlarged detailed view of the Fig. 4 shown rack for the steering system of the motor vehicle according to the first embodiment of the invention.

[0047] In the Fig. In the illustration shown in Figure 5, the toothed element 14 is connected to the base body 12 by a weld seam 18. The base body 12 is formed from a material with a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element 14 in a hardened edge layer 20 of the toothed element 14. The base body 12 has the projections 16a, 16b on its surface.

[0048] The toothed element 14 is arranged on the surface of the base body 12 in such a way that the toothed element 14 rests against the projections 16a, 16b of the base body 12. The toothed element 14 is welded to the base body 12 in such a way that the weld seam 18 has a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element 14 in the hardened surface layer 20 of the toothed element 14.

[0049] The weld seam 18 extends through the projection 16b of the base body 12, through the hardened surface layer 20 of the toothed element 14, and a predetermined penetration depth beyond the hardened surface layer 20 of the toothed element 14 into the toothed element 14. The weld seam 18 has a mixing ratio of the materials of the base body 12 and the toothed element 14 with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2%.

[0050] Fig. 6 shows a schematic representation of the rack for the steering system of the motor vehicle according to a second embodiment of the invention.

[0051] The rack 110 has an elongated base body 112, a toothed element 114 and a connecting element 115 arranged between the base body and the toothed element.

[0052] Alternatively, for example, a first connecting element and a second connecting element can be provided for connecting the base body to the toothed element, which are, for example, split longitudinally or transversely.

[0053] The base body 112 and the connecting element 115 are made of steel with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2%. The toothed element 114 is made of steel, preferably case-hardening steel and tempering steel, with a carbon content in a (in Fig. 6 not shown) hardened edge layer of the toothing element of > 0.2%, preferably between 0.21% and 1%.

[0054] The connecting element 115 has a substantially flat upper side facing the toothed element 114. The toothed element 114 has a substantially flat underside facing the connecting element 115. The toothed element 114 can thus be positively connected to the connecting element 115. Furthermore, an underside of the connecting element 115 is adapted to a surface of the base body 112 such that the underside of the connecting element 115 has a contour adapted to the surface of the base body 112.

[0055] Furthermore, the connecting element 115 has respective limiting sections 115a, 115b at respective end sections in the longitudinal direction of the connecting element 115. The limiting sections 115a, 115b are designed to positively connect the toothed element 114 to the connecting element 115.

[0056] Fig. 7 shows a cross-sectional view of the rack for the steering system of the motor vehicle according to the second embodiment of the invention.

[0057] In the present embodiment, the width of the toothed element 114 is smaller than the diameter of the base body 112. Alternatively, the width of the toothed element can be smaller than or equal to the diameter of the base body 112. The base body 112 and the connecting element 115 are formed from a material with a lower carbon content than the material of the toothed element 114 in a hardened surface layer 120 of the toothed element 114.

[0058] The toothed element 114 is welded to the base body 112. The toothed element 114 is welded to the base body 112 in such a way that a weld seam 118 has a lower carbon content than a material of the toothed element 114 in the hardened surface layer 120 of the toothed element 114.

[0059] The weld seam 118 extends through the connecting element 115, through the hardened surface layer 120 of the toothed element 114, and a predetermined penetration depth beyond the hardened surface layer 120 of the toothed element 114 into the toothed element 114. The weld seam 118 has a mixing ratio of the materials for the connecting element 115 and the toothed element 114 with a carbon content of ≤ 0.2%.
