Abstract
Description
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The invention relates to a computer-implemented method for controlling a multi-agent system with N autonomous agents, N ≥ 2. The invention further relates to a control device, an autonomous agent, a multi-agent system, a computer program and a computer-readable storage medium.
[0002] Robustness and reliability are very important for multi-agent systems, such as a team of robots or a team of autonomous vehicles. Formation tracking control of multi-agent systems has attracted considerable attention in various industrial fields, as it enables agents to follow desired trajectories while maintaining their autonomy. During the control of multi-agent systems, actuator failure, which directly affects the safety and reliability of the system, is a crucial issue that must be addressed. In this context, some researchers have attempted to develop fault-tolerant control concepts to account for various types of actuator failures in multi-agent systems, such as partial loss of effectiveness, stuckness, bias, etc. However, currently existing methods are based on the assumption that the faulty actuator retains some control capability and are therefore not applicable to actuator failure, where the actuator fails without any output signal and completely loses its control capability. Given this, an effective control solution needs to be developed to deal with actuator defects, especially potential actuator failures, using actuator and controller redundancy.

[0004] The object of the invention is to provide a method for controlling a multi-agent system, wherein the method takes into account possible failures of actuator devices in the multi-agent system.
[0005] The object of the invention is achieved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject matter of the dependent claims.
[0006] According to one aspect, the invention provides a computer-implemented method for controlling a multi-agent system with N autonomous agents, N ≥ 2, for n-dimensional navigation of the latter, wherein each agent comprises an active actuator device and at least one inactive actuator device, each configured for n-dimensional navigation of the agent, wherein the at least one inactive actuator device is configured to be redundant with the active actuator device, wherein each agent has a control switching device for switching control from one actuator device to another actuator device, wherein the multi-agent system is configured in a leader-follower formation in which each agent is to execute a respective desired movement using the active actuator device, wherein each agent has a sensor device for tracking a respective actual movement, where the desired movement and the actual movement of the i-th agent, i = 1, ...,N are determined by a movement-related quantity x, i , x i ∈ ℜ n described, where the procedure for each agent includes: a) Controlling the active actuator device for navigating the agent by limiting a corresponding tracking error s i,1 , i = 1, ...,N, between the motion-related quantity x i the actual movement and the movement-related quantity x i the desired movement within a specified range, as long as no failure of the active actuator device is detected; and b) if a failure of the active actuator device is detected, ignoring the active actuator device for control and causing the control switching device to switch control of the ignored actuator device to one of the at least one inactive actuator device, and using the latter as the active actuator device for control to navigate by detecting the respective tracking error s i,1 , i = 1, ..., N remains bounded according to step a).
[0007] In multi-agent systems, the agents are typically dynamically decoupled from each other, implying the need for cooperation to achieve collective behavior. The goal of distributed formation control is for multiple agents to work together efficiently to achieve collective group behavior through local interaction. Such multi-agent systems can be used in warehouse automation, dial-a-ride scenarios, parcel delivery, mothership applications, and so on. Actuator defects in multi-agent systems can severely impact system performance and even lead to catastrophic instability of the closed-loop system. Common types of actuator defects in multi-agent systems include partial loss of effectiveness or failure (complete loss of effectiveness).
[0008] In embodiments of the invention, initial conditions are taken into account in the event of actuator failures. The method can enable a control activator based on a fault detection system to handle potential actuator failures. Possible actuator failures can be handled, and the controller's performance can be guaranteed by limiting tracking errors within specified ranges. Since only one functioning actuator operates during control and the redundant channel is only activated when needed, energy consumption can be reduced. In other words, the redundant channels can be inactive or switched off as long as no failure is detected and are only switched on when needed.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0025] Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment of a multi-agent system 10 in n = 2 dimensions.
[0026] The multi-agent system 10 comprises N = 4 autonomous agents 12, a first agent 12a, a second agent 12b, a third agent 12c, and a fourth agent 12d. In this case, the autonomous agents 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d can each be configured as a robot, vehicle, etc. However, within the scope of the invention, any number N ≥ 2 of agents 12 and any dimension n, for example, n = 1 or n = 3, are possible. In this context, the autonomous agents 12 can each be configured as a train, airplane, drone, etc.
[0027] In Fig. 1, each agent 12 has an active actuator device 14 with which the agent 12 can be navigated two-dimensionally.
[0028] The multi-agent system 10 is configured in a leader-follower formation 16, in which each agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d is to execute a respective desired movement using the active actuator device 14, wherein the desired movement of the i-th agent 12, i = 1, ..., N is determined by a movement-related quantity x i , x i ∈ ℜ 2 described.
[0029] In this case, the movement is a translational movement, but within the scope of the invention, it can also be a rotational movement. The movement-related variable in this case is the position of the respective agent 12. Within the scope of the invention, however, it can also be a speed and / or acceleration of the respective agent 12.
[0030] The desired movement is based on the movement of a leader agent 18. In this case, the leader agent 18 is virtual. However, within the scope of the invention, the leader agent 18 can also be any of the N autonomous agents 12 of the multi-agent system 10.
[0031] In the leader-follower formation 16, the agents 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d communicate with each other. Fig. In the example shown in Figure 1, the second agent 12b communicates with the first agent 12a and the third agent 12c. The third agent 12c communicates with the first agent 12a and the second agent 12b. The fourth agent 12d communicates with the first agent 12a. The virtual leader 18 communicates with the third agent 12c and the fourth agent 12d. In other words, the agents 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d and the leader agent 18 form a communication topology 20 that prescribes a collective movement of the multi-agent system 10 with respect to the leader agent 18, corresponding to the respective desired movement of the agents 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d. For two-dimensional navigation according to the respective desired movement, each agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d uses its active actuator device 14.
[0032] One idea is to solve the following problem: A defect and / or failure of the active actuator device 14 of a particular agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d may cause this agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d to deviate from the respective desired movement.
[0033] However, due to the leader-follower formation 16, the deviation of a given agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d from the respective desired movement can also affect the movement of all other agents 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d in the multi-agent system 10, even though all other agents 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d may have an intact active actuator device 14. In other words, a failure of the active actuator device 14 of a single agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d can lead to incorrect behavior of the entire multi-agent system 10.
[0034] Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment of the multi-agent system 10.
[0035] To solve the above problem, each agent 12 initially comprises at least one inactive actuator device 22, wherein the at least one inactive actuator device 22 is configured to be redundant with the active actuator device 14.
[0036] Secondly, each agent 12 has a control switching device 24 for switching a control 26 from one actuator device 14, 22 to another actuator device 14, 22. In Fig. 2, each actuator device 14 includes a corresponding controller 26 that is separate from the control switching device 24. However, within the scope of the invention, the corresponding controllers 26 may also be included in the control switching device 24.
[0037] Thirdly, each agent 12 has a sensor device for tracking a respective actual movement, where the actual movement of the i-th agent 12, i = 1, ..., N, is determined by the movement-related quantity xi , x i ∈ ℜ n , is described.
[0038] Fig. 3 shows a first embodiment of a computer-implemented method for controlling the multi-agent system 10 with the four autonomous agents 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d.
[0039] In a step S11, the method comprises: - for each agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, controlling the active actuator device 14 to navigate the agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d by limiting a respective tracking error s i,1 , i = 1, ...,N, between the motion-related quantity x i the actual movement and the movement-related quantity x i the desired movement within a prescribed range, as long as no failure of the active actuator device is detected.
[0040] In a step S12, the method comprises: - for each agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, if a failure of the active actuator device 14 is detected, ignoring the active actuator device 14 for control and causing the control switching device 24 to switch the control 26 from the ignored actuator device 14 to one of the at least one inactive actuator devices 22, and using the latter as the active actuator device 14 for control to navigate by detecting the respective tracking error s i,1 , i = 1, ..., N remains limited according to step S11.
[0041] According to the procedure, the respective tracking error remains s i,1 , i = 1, ..., N, between the motion-related quantity x i the actual movement and the movement-related quantity x ithe desired movement within the specified range, even if a failure of the active actuator device 14 is detected. In other words, limiting the respective tracking error s i,1 , i = 1, ..., N is not interrupted.
[0042] If a failure of the active actuator device 14 is detected, the active actuator device 14 is ignored for control and the control switching device 24 is caused to switch the control 26 from the ignored actuator device 14 to one of the at least one inactive actuator devices 22 and to use this as the active actuator device 14 for control for navigation. According to the method, the ignoring, switching, and use of the at least one inactive actuator device 22 as the active actuator device 14 is carried out such that the respective tracking error s i,1, i = 1, ..., N remains within the specified range at all times. Thus, a failure of the active actuator device 14 of a single agent 12, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d can prevent malfunction of the entire multi-agent system 10.
[0043] The tracking error s i,1 of the i-th agent 12, i = 1, ..., N, can be given as follows: si,1=ai,0(yi−yh,i−y0)+∑μ∈Niai,μ((yi−yh,i)−(yμ−yh,μ)), where y i = x i,1 , x i,m an m-th state or a coordinate of the motion-related quantity x i ∈ ℜ n of the i-th agent 12, y0 is a predefined global task reference of the multi-agent system 10, y h,i ∈ ℜ is a predefined local reference of the i-th agent 12, A^=[aij]∈ℜN×N an adjacency matrix is denoted by a ii = 0, a ij= 1, if there is a communication connection between the i-th agent 12 and the j-th agent 12, and otherwise a ij = 0, and Ni is a neighborhood set of the i-th agent 12. y0 can represent the movement of the virtual leader 18. The adjacency matrix can be calculated according to the communication topology 20 of Fig. 1 can be defined.
[0044] In a step S13, the method comprises the following: - Limiting the tracking error s i,1 of the i-th agent, i = 1, ...,N, such that: −γ_iϕi <si,1<γ¯iϕi, wenn si,1(t0)> 0, and −γ¯iϕi <si,1<γ_iϕi, wennsi,1(t0)<0, for all t ∈ [t0, ∞), where s i,1 (t0) is the tracking error of the i-th agent 12, i = 1, ...,N, at a start time t0, 0 < γ i , γ i ≤ 1 are predefined parameters, and ϕ i of the i-th agent 12 is a positive predetermined performance function that decreases with time t and limt→∞ϕ=ϕ∞>0 fulfilled.
