Description

The present invention relates to shelving systems. The present invention also relates to shelving components for such systems, shelving installations and methods of assembling shelving installations. Shelving can take a variety of different forms. For example, individual shelves may be separately affixed to a wall. However, it can be difficult to arrange individual shelves horizontally and parallel to one another. Alternatively, a set of shelves may be provided together as part of a pre-constructed shelving unit, such as a bookcase or wardrobe, which is stood on the floor. However, such shelving units tend to be large and bulky. As a result, such shelving units often do not make the best possible use of space, particularly in regions of rooms having low sloping ceilings. Also, although the spacing between shelves in such shelving units can often be adjusted vertically, the shelving units generally are otherwise not reconfigurable. In order to provide shelving having a bespoke configuration, it is known to provide shelving systems in kit form. However, these shelving systems tend to include many different components, such as upright supports, hanging rails, shelf supports, and shelf boards, as well as various connectors and brackets. Such shelving systems can therefore be complex and difficult to install, particularly for non-professional installers. It is therefore desired to provide improvements relating to shelving systems. According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided an elongate profile component for a shelving system, the profile component comprising: a channel extending longitudinally along the profile component, the channel having a channel opening for laterally receiving and supporting an edge of a shelf board of the system; and a conduit extending longitudinally along the profile component for longitudinally receiving an end of a mounting member or coupling member of the system. It will be appreciated that the present invention can provide a shelving component which performs multiple functions in a shelving system. In particular, the channel can be used to receive and support an edge of a shelving board of the system. Thus, two such profile components can be used to support respective edges of a shelf board. Furthermore, the conduit can be used to longitudinally receive an end of a mounting member of the system. Thus, such a profile component can also be used to mount the shelving system to a wall or ceiling via the mounting member of the system. The conduit may also be used to longitudinally receive a coupling member of the system. Thus, two or more such profile components can be coupled together end to end via the coupling member to create a longer profile component, which may for example be used as a longer upright support or hanging rail. Thus, by being able to perform multiple functions, the profile component of the present invention can reduce the number of different components needed to assemble shelving and can provide a simplified shelving system. In embodiments, the channel may be defined by a first channel side wall and a second channel side wall. The plane of the first channel side wall may be substantially parallel to the plane of the second channel side wall. The first and second channel side walls may each have a longitudinally extending free edge. The first channel side wall and second channel side wall can allow the shelf board to be received laterally and then held therebetween. The channel may be further defined by a channel base wall, e.g. extending between the first channel side wall and the second channel side wall. The plane of the channel base wall may be substantially perpendicular to the plane of the first channel side wall and / or second channel side wall. The channel base wall can limit the extent to which the shelf board can be received laterally by the channel. The channel may have a substantially rectangular (including oblong or square) cross-section in planes orthogonal to the longitudinal direction. The channel may have a span (e.g. between the first and second channel side walls) in the range 10-25mm. The channel may have a span which is substantially the same as or greater than the thickness of a shelf board of the shelving system. This can allow the shelf board to be received laterally and then supported closely by the channel. The channel may have a depth (e.g. between the channel opening and channel base wall) in the range 10-25mm. In embodiments, the conduit may be defined by a first conduit side wall and a second conduit side wall. The first conduit side wall may be connected to (e.g. contiguous with) the first channel side wall. The second conduit side wall may be connected to (e.g. contiguous with) the second channel side wall. The plane of the first conduit side wall may be substantially parallel to the plane of the second conduit side wall. The first and second conduit side walls can allow a mounting member or coupling member to be received longitudinally and then held laterally therebetween. The conduit may be further defined by an inner conduit wall, e.g. extending between the first conduit side wall and the second conduit side wall. The plane of the inner conduit wall may be substantially perpendicular to the plane of the first conduit side wall and / or second conduit side wall. The inner conduit wall may be the same structure as the channel base wall, which may be referred to herein as a channel-conduit dividing wall. The conduit may be further defined by an outer conduit wall, e.g. extending between the first conduit side wall and the second conduit side wall. The plane of the outer conduit wall may be substantially perpendicular to the plane of the first conduit side wall and / or second conduit side wall. The plane of the outer conduit wall may be substantially parallel to the plane of the inner conduit wall. Again, the inner and outer conduit walls can allow a mounting member or coupling member to be received longitudinally and then held laterally therebetween. The conduit may have a substantially rectangular (including oblong or square) cross-section in planes orthogonal to the longitudinal direction. The conduit may have a span (e.g. between the first and second conduit side walls) in the range 10-25mm. The conduit may have a depth (e.g. between the inner and outer conduit walls) in the range 5-20mm. The conduit may have a span and / or a depth which is substantially the same as or greater than the corresponding dimension(s) of an end of a mounting member or coupling member of the shelving system. This can allow the mounting member or coupling member to be received longitudinally and then held closely by the conduit. In embodiments, the profile component may further comprise a trim recess extending longitudinally along the profile component for receiving an elongate trim component of the system. The trim component may, for example, provide a relatively hardwearing and / or replaceable surface when the profile component is used as a hanging rail. The trim recess may be defined by a first trim recess ridge and a second trim recess ridge. The first and second trim recess ridges can allow the trim element to be received and then held therebetween. The trim recess may be further defined by a trim recess base wall, e.g. extending between the first trim recess ridge and the second trim recess ridge. The trim recess base wall may be the same structure as the outer conduit wall, which may be referred to herein as the conduit-recess wall. The trim recess may have a span (e.g. between the first and second trim recess ridges) in the range 10-25mm. The trim recess may have a span which is substantially the same as or greater than the width of a trim component of the shelving system. This can allow the trim component to be received and then held closely in the trim recess. The trim recess may have a depth (e.g. between the trim recess opening and recess base wall) in the range 1-3mm. In embodiments, the profile component may further comprise a first side recess extending longitudinally along the profile component for receiving an end face of another such profile component. The first side recess may facilitate the coupling together of two such profile components when arranged perpendicularly to one another. The first side recess may be defined by a first side recess ridge and a second side recess ridge. The first side recess ridge may be provided at the free edge of the first channel side wall. The second side recess ridge may be formed by a step in the first channel side wall and / or first conduit side wall. The first and second side recess ridges can allow the end face of another such profile component to be received and then held therebetween. The first side recess may be further defined by a first side recess base wall, e.g. extending between the first side recess ridge and the second side recess ridge. The first side recess base wall may be the same structure as the first channel side wall and / or first conduit side wall, which may be referred to herein as the first side-recess wall. The first side recess may have a span (e.g. between the first and second side recess ridges) in the range 15-35mm. The first side recess may have a depth (e.g. between the first side recess opening and first side recess base wall) in the range 1-3mm. The span of the first side recess may be substantially the same as the overall width of the profile component. This can allow the end face of another such profile component to be received and then held closely within the first side recess. In embodiments, the profile component may further comprise a second side recess extending longitudinally along the profile component for receiving an end face of another such profile component. Again, the second side recess may facilitate the coupling together of two such profile components when arranged perpendicularly. The second side recess may be defined by a third side recess ridge and a fourth side recess ridge. The third side recess ridge may be provided at the free edge of the second channel side wall. The fourth side recess ridge may be formed by a step in the second channel side wall and / or second conduit side wall. The third and fourth side recess ridges can allow the end face of another such profile component to be received and then held therebetween. The second side recess may be further defined by a second side recess base wall, e.g. extending between the third side recess ridge and the fourth side recess ridge. The second side recess base wall may be the same structure as the second channel side wall and / or second conduit side wall, which may be referred to herein as the second side-recess wall. The second side recess may have a span (e.g. between the third and fourth side recess ridges) in the range 15-35mm. The second side recess may have a depth (e.g. between the second side recess opening and second side recess base wall) in the range 1-3mm. The span of the second side recess may be substantially the same as the overall width of the profile component. Again, this can allow the end face of another such profile component to be received and then held closely within the second side recess. In embodiments, the channel base wall may comprise one or more fixing recesses or grooves for indicating the location at which to provide one or more mechanical fixings for securing the profile component to one or more other components of the system, such as other such profile components, mounting members, coupling members or end cap components, of the system. The mechanical fixing may be a threaded fixing, such as a screw or bolt. In embodiments, the profile component may be of unitary construction. The profile component may be formed of a metallic material, such as aluminium or aluminium alloy. These embodiments can provide a profile component which is strong, lightweight and durable. The profile component may be an extruded profile component. The profile component may have a substantially uniform cross-section in planes orthogonal to the longitudinal direction. This can allow any and all sections of the profile component to be used in the same way. The profile component may have a substantially symmetrical cross-section in planes orthogonal to the longitudinal direction. This can allow the profile component to be used either way around. ln embodiments, the profile component may have an overall width (e.g. in a first direction substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal direction) in the range 15-35mm. The profile component may have an overall depth (e.g. in a second direction substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal direction) in the range 25-45mm. The profile component may have an overall length (e.g. in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction) in the range 1000-3000mm. The profile component may also be provided with (e.g. cut to) other lengths, depending on the particular shelving installation, as desired. The walls of the profile component may each have a thickness in the range 1-3mm. The thickness of the walls may be substantially uniform along the length of the profile component. In embodiments, the channel and conduit may extend substantially parallel to one another. In use, the profile component may be arranged such that the channel and / or conduit extend substantially vertically. These embodiments can allow the profile component to be used as an upright support. Alternatively, in use, the profile component may be arranged such that the channel and / or conduit extend substantially horizontally. In some of these embodiments, the profile component may be arranged such that the conduit is horizontally adjacent the channel. These embodiments can allow the profile component to be used as a shelf support, for example with an edge of a substantially horizontal shelf board being received laterally in the channel. However, in others of these embodiments, the profile component may be arranged such that the conduit is vertically above the channel, for example with the trim recess being vertically above the conduit. These embodiments can allow the profile component to be used as a hanging rail, for example with the trim component being a hanging rail trim. According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a mounting component for a shelving system, the mounting component comprising: a mounting bracket for fixing to a wall or ceiling; and a mounting member having a first end connected to the mounting bracket and a second end for longitudinal receipt within a conduit of an elongate profile component of the system. In embodiments, the mounting bracket may comprise a mounting plate. The mounting plate may comprise one or more fixing holes for receiving mechanical fixings therethrough. The mechanical fixings may be threaded fixings, such as screws or bolts. The mounting bracket may further comprise first and second retaining walls for receiving and / or retaining the first end of the mounting member therebetween. The first and second retaining walls may be substantially arcuate and / or semi-circular in shape, e.g. to reduce the amount of material required for those walls. The planes of the first and second retaining walls may be substantially parallel to one another. The planes of the first and second retaining walls may be substantially perpendicular to the plane of the mounting plate. The first and second retaining walls may each comprise a mounting hole for mounting the first end of the mounting member to the mounting bracket. The mounting hole of the first retaining wall may be aligned with the mounting hole of the second retaining wall. In embodiments, the first end of the mounting member may be pivotably connected to the mounting bracket. The first end of the mounting member may be substantially arcuate and / or semi-circular in cross-section, e.g. to allow pivoting of the mounting member relative to the mounting bracket. The mounting component may comprise a pivoting member for pivotably mounting the first end of the mounting member to the mounting bracket. The pivoting member may comprise a shaft, e.g. of a mechanical fixing. The mechanical fixing may be a threaded fixing, such as a screw or bolt. The pivoting member may extend between the (e.g. mounting holes of the) first and second retaining walls. The (e.g. first end of the) mounting member may comprise a mounting hole. The mounting hole of the mounting member may be aligned with the mounting hole of the first and / or second retaining wall. The pivoting member may project from the (e.g. first end of the) mounting member. The pivoting member may project from either side of the (e.g. first end of the) mounting member. The pivoting member may extend through the (e.g. mounting hole of the) mounting member. These embodiments can allow the angle of the mounting bracket to be pivotably adjusted relative to the mounting member. These embodiments may, for example, allow the mounting bracket to be fixed to a sloped surface, such as a ceiling or wall, with the mounting member at a different orientation, such as vertical or horizontal. In embodiments, the second end of the mounting member may comprise first and second mounting legs. The first mounting leg may be receivable within a conduit of the profile component. The width of the first mounting leg may be in the range 10-25mm. The width of the first mounting leg may be substantially the same as or less than the span of the conduit. The thickness of the first mounting leg may be in the range 5-20mm. The thickness of the first mounting leg may be the same as or less than the depth of the conduit. The second mounting leg may be receivable within a channel of the profile component. The width of the second mounting leg may be in the range 10-25mm. The width of the second mounting leg may be substantially the same as or less than the span of the channel. The thickness of the second mounting leg may be in the range 5-20mm. The thickness of the second mounting leg may be the same as or less than the depth of the channel. The second end of the mounting member (and first leg and / or second leg) may have a substantially rectangular (including oblong or square) crosssection in planes orthogonal to the longitudinal direction. The first and / or second mounting leg may comprise one or more fixing recesses or grooves for indicating the location at which to provide one or more mechanical fixings for securing the mounting member to the (e.g. channel-conduit dividing wall of the) profile component. The mechanical fixing may be a threaded fixing, such as a screw or bolt. The first and second mounting legs may define a slot therebetween. The slot may be configured to receive a wall (e.g. the channel-conduit dividing wall) of the profile component. The span of the slot may be substantially the same as or greater than the span of that wall (e.g. the channel-conduit dividing wall) of the profile component. The mechanical fixing may pass through the second mounting leg, wall (e.g. the channel-conduit dividing wall), and first mounting leg, or vice versa. These embodiments can provide a secure connection between the mounting member and the profile component, e.g. to resist longitudinal and / or lateral movement relative to one another. According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a shelving system comprising one or more elongate profile components and / or one or more mounting components as described herein in any aspect or embodiment. In embodiments, the shelving system may be provided in kit form, e.g. as one or more unassembled or separate components. The shelving system may be used to assemble a shelving installation. Thus, according to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a shelving installation comprising one or more elongate profile components and / or one or more mounting components as described herein in any aspect or embodiment. Similarly, according to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of assembling a shelving installation comprising one or more elongate profile components and / or one or more mounting components as described herein in any aspect or embodiment. In any of these aspects or embodiments, one or more of the profile components may be arranged substantially vertically and / or one or more of the profile components may be arranged substantially horizontally. One or more profile components which are arranged substantially vertically (e.g. between the ceiling or wall and the floor) may support one or more profile components which are arranged substantially horizontally, or vice versa. In embodiments, a channel and / or conduit at a first end of a (e.g. substantially vertical) profile component may receive a mounting member (of a mounting component). The mounting member and profile component may be secured together, for example using one or more mechanical fixings, as described herein. A mounting bracket (of a mounting component) may be secured to a wall or ceiling, for example using one or more mechanical fixings, as described herein. The angle of the mounting bracket relative to the mounting member and profile component may be pivotably adjusted to enable appropriate contact with a (e.g. sloped) wall or ceiling as described herein. The second end of the profile component may be stood on the floor. Alternatively, the second end of the profile component may be secured to a wall, ceiling or floor via a second mounting component. In embodiments, the shelving system and / or installation may further comprise one or more shelf boards. The shelf board may have a first edge for receipt within a channel of a (e.g. substantially horizontal) profile component. The shelf board may have a second edge for receipt within a channel of another (e.g. substantially horizontal) profile component. Thus, the (e.g. substantially horizontal) profile components may be arranged with the shelf board supported therebetween. The (e.g. substantially horizontal) profile components may be arranged substantially parallel to one another. Each of the (e.g. substantially horizontal) profile components may respectively be supported by another (e.g. substantially vertical) profile component as described herein. In embodiments, the shelving system and / or installation may further comprise one or more trim components, such as one or more hanging rail trim components. The trim component may have a first (planar) surface for receipt within a trim recess of a (e.g. substantially horizontal) profile component. The trim component may have a second (curved) surface that enables the (e.g. substantially horizontal) profile component to operate as a hanging rail. Again, the (e.g. substantially horizontal) profile component may be supported by another (e.g. substantially vertical) profile component as discussed above. In embodiments, the shelving system and / or installation may further comprise one or more end cap components. The end cap component may have a cap plate for covering an end face of a profile component and a projecting part for seating within a channel and / or a conduit of the profile component. In embodiments, the shelving system and / or installation may further comprise one or more coupling members. One end of a coupling member may be received in a channel and / or conduit of a profile component and the other end of the coupling member may be received in a channel and / or conduit of another profile component. The trim component 90 has a planar surface 92 for receipt within the trim recess 28 of the profile component 10 and a curved surface 94 that enables the profile component 10 to operate as a hanging rail. Figures 6 and 7 show a shelving installation 100 which has been assembled from the components of the shelving system. The shelving installation 100 comprises two vertical profile components 10A, which are secured at their top ends to a sloping ceiling via mounting components 50, with each mounting bracket 52 adjusted to a suitable angle relative to the mounting member 70, and with the mounting member 70 adjusted to a suitable longitudinal location within the conduit 20. The lower ends of the vertical profile components 10A are stood on the floor. The shelving installation 100 also comprises a series of horizontal profile components 10B supported by the vertical profile components 10A. The channels and conduits of the horizontal profile components 10B are horizontally adjacent one another. Each pair of these horizontal profile components 10B receives and supports a shelf board 102 between the channels 12 of those profile components 10B. The shelving installation 100 also comprises a further series of horizontal profile components 10C supported either by the vertical profile components 10A or by a wall. Each pair of these horizontal profile components 10C receives and supports a longer shelf board 104 between the channels 12 of those profile components 10C. The shelving installation 100 also comprises a further pair of horizontal profile components 10D supported by the vertical profile components 10A (in a recess 34, 40) and by a wall. For the profile components 10D, the conduits are vertically above the channels. Each of these horizontal profile components 10D has a trim component 90 in its trim recess 28 so that profile components 10D can act as a hanging rail. The shelving installation 100 also comprises various end cap components 106 each having a cap plate for covering the end face of its profile component 10 and a projecting part for seating within the channel 12 and / or conduit 20 of its profile component 10. The end cap components 106 provide a neat finish and can also be used when securing the 5 end face of a profile component 10 to another profile component 10 or a wall. The shelving installation may further comprise coupling members (not shown) received in the channels and / or conduits of adjacent profile components 10 to provide a longer profile component. It will be appreciated that other combinations and arrangements of the components described herein may be used when 10 assembling various different shelving installations.
