Abstract
Description
TEMPORARY STRUCTURE WITH IMPROVED WALL SYSTEMCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] This application claims priority to and the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 565,248, filed March 14, 2024, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all intents and purposes.FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The invention relates to temporary buildings or structures, and, more particularly, to temporary buildings or structures with wall systems, such as but not limited to those with connections for environmental control systems, such as but not limited to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] Temporary buildings or structures are commonly designed to house or provide shelter from elements to people, products, equipment, animals, and / or as otherwise desired. While temporary buildings may function like a permanent structure, they are easily set up and installed, which further may allow for easy disassembly when no longer needed. Temporary buildings are often customizable and may range in type from tents, buildings, and shipping containers to large warehouses and semi -permanent buildings. Commonly, the walls of such temporary buildings are constructed from a flexible or fabric wall because such fabric walls enclose a space while also being easy to install, store, and remove as needed.
[0004] In certain situations, it may be desirable to control environmental conditions (e.g., heat or temperature, humidity, dampness, ventilation, etc.) within the temporary structure. Traditional approaches for environmental control with the temporary structure include providing an environmental handling system, such as but not limited to an HVAC system, outside of the temporary structure and connecting fabric ducts to fabric duct socks welded into the fabric wall and / or sandwiching the fabric ducts through any available opening in the fabric wall. Such traditional approaches are prone to failure and prone to disassembly, thereby decreasing the effectiveness of the environmental control systems and / or subjecting the interior of the temporary structure to external conditions such as water intrusion, weather events, etc.SUMMARY

[0043] The plenums 32 of the wall segment 24 generally include a center portion 64 with features for engaging one or more ducts 61 of an environmental control system 63. In some embodiments, the features include one or more apertures 72 for connecting with one or more ducts 61. The one or more apertures 72 may be various sizes and / or configured to connect with various size ducts 61. In one non-limiting example, the one or more apertures 72 may be sized to engage 20-inch diameter ducts 61. In certain embodiments, and as illustrated in plenum 32 A, the one or more apertures 72 may face in a generally horizontal direction (e.g., inwards or outwards from the wall segment 24). Additionally, or alternatively, and as illustrated in plenum 32B, a hood 78 may be included with the center portion 64, thereby providing the apertures 72 in other orientations such as in a vertical direction (e.g., upwards or downwards). Optionally, and as illustrated in FIGS. 14 and 15, one or more sides of the plenum 32 may include a grate 74 and / or other feature at least partially controlling a flow of air through the plenum 32. Optionally, one or more handles 76 may be provided on the center portion 64 to facilitate handling of the plenum 32 by a user.
[0044] In addition to the center portion 64, the plenums 32 include a perimeter portion 66 defining a perimeter channel 68. In certain embodiments, the perimeter channel 68 includes one or more side channel portions for engaging rigid wall panels 30 within the same horizontal row 28 as the plenum 32 (see, e.g., FIG. 5). The side channel portions may be defined by, on, or at side edges of the plenum 32. The perimeter channel 68 may additionally include upper and / or lower channel portions for engaging rigid wall panels 30 of vertically adjacent horizontal rows 28. The upper and / or lower channel portions may be defined by, on, or at upperand / or lower edges of the plenum 32. As illustrated in FIGS. 1-15, when the plenum 32 is provided within a horizontal row 28, the plenum 32 (through the perimeter channel 68) at least partially receives portions of adjacent rigid wall panels 30 and optionally overlaps portions of the faces 44 / 46. Such positioning and / or overlap may improve the stability of the plenum 32 on the wall segment 24 and / or may minimize or eliminate areas of potential intrusion by water or other elements through the wall segment 24. In various embodiments, the plenum 32 with the perimeter channel 68 may facilitate the positioning of the plenum 32 within a single horizontal row 28, thereby eliminating any need to cut vertically adjacent panels 30. The plenum 32 with the perimeter channel 68 may further minimize cutting of panel 30 within the same horizontal row 28 compared to traditional approaches, as only a length of the panels 30 may need to be changed to accommodate the plenum 32 within the horizontal row 28 (see, e.g., FIG. 8).
[0045] The plenums 32 of the wall segment 24 may be constructed from various materials as desired. In certain embodiments, the plenums 32 are a rigid material, such as but not limited to a metal.

[0047] In various embodiments, the method includes forming a plurality of horizontal rows 28 of rigid wall panels 30. In certain embodiments, forming the plurality of horizontal rows 28 includes forming at least two horizontal rows 28, such as at least three horizontal rows 28, such as at least four horizontal rows 28, such as at least five horizontal rows 28, and / or such as at least six horizontal rows 28. In certain embodiments, forming the plurality of horizontal rows 28 includes engaging mating elements 52 of vertically adjacent rigid wall panels 30.
[0048] In some embodiments, forming one horizontal row 28 of the plurality of horizontal rows 28 includes positioning opposing edges 60, 62 of a rigid wall panel 30 within the vertical channels 34 (see, e.g., FIGS. 4 and 7).
[0049] In certain embodiments, forming one horizontal row 28 of the plurality of horizontal rows 28 includes providing a plenum 32 within the horizontal row 28 (see, e.g., FIGS. 5, 6, 8, and 9). In such embodiments, the method optionally includes forming two wall panels of adesired length by cutting one or more panels 30 (see, e.g., FIG. 8). Forming the horizontal row 28 with the plenum 32 may include positioning the edge 60 of a first wall panel 30 within one vertical channel 34 and the edge 62 of a second wall panel 30 within an opposing vertical channel 34. The method may include positioning the plenum 32 such that the edge 62 of the first wall panel 30 and the edge 60 of the second wall panel 30 are within the perimeter channel 68 of the plenum 32. Optionally, the method includes positioning the plenum 32 such that a portion of an upper edge 48 of a vertically adjacent and lower panel 30 is within the perimeter channel 68 and / or such that a portion of a lower edge 50 of a vertically adjacent and upper panel 30 is within the perimeter channel 68. Optionally, the method includes positioning the plenum 32 such that the plenum 32 is contained within a single horizontal row 28. Optionally, the method includes positioning the plenum 32 such that the plenum 32 at least partially overlaps horizontally adjacent rigid wall panels 30 and vertically adjacent rigid wall panels 30 while at least the center portion 64 is contained within a single horizontal row 28.
[0050] The method optionally may include connecting one or more ducts 61 with the plenums 32 such that an environmental control system, such as but not limited to an HVAC system 67 (see, e.g., FIG. 11), is connected to the temporary building 10. Such connections may allow the environmental control system to control environmental conditions (e.g., heat or temperature, humidity, dampness, ventilation, etc.) within the temporary structure.
[0051] The systems and methods described herein provide a flexible and modular approach to provide a wall for a temporary building while reducing installation time and / or waste generated during installation. As a non-limiting example, the plenums contained within a horizontal row may allow for the plenum to be provided in any horizontal row and / or at any relative location along a horizontal row as desired while only requiring a change in length of wall panels within that horizontal row. In other words, vertically adjacent wall panels need not be modified to accommodate the plenum. As a further non-limiting example, the rigid wall panels in conjunction with the channel members may provide a stable arrangement of components which further minimizes and / or prevents the intrusion of elements through the wall segment. The systems and methods described herein may further allow for various arrangements of plenums, wall plates, and / or other components as desired. Various other benefits and advantages may be realized with the systems and methods provided herein, and the aforementioned advantages should not be considered limiting.
