Abstract

A method for controlling a metalworking operation. The method comprises: measuring force feedback from a welding wire being fed from a wire feeder, wherein the welding wire contacts a workpiece; determining a change in force of the force feedback; and adjusting heating or heating of the welding wire based at least in part on the change in force of the force feedback. The wire feed rate. An apparatus implementing the aforementioned method is also disclosed.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is filed on the same date as and commonly assigned Serial No. 14 / 943,270, Attorney Docket No. 09794624-000566, entitled "Metalworking Wire Feeder System With Force Control StartOperation" related patent application, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates generally to metal processing equipment and methods, and more particularly to welding, cladding and additive manufacturing control systems. Background technique [0004] Hot wire welding and cladding is the process by which a metal filler wire is heated, usually resistively, to a softened or plastic state by passing an electric current through it. This reduces the increased heat required from another source to the base metal of the workpiece to which the heated wire is applied. The welding wire is typically fed in front of or behind a high power energy source, such as a laser...
