Background technique [0002] One technique for aftertreatment of engine exhaust uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to allow certain chemical reactions to occur between NOx and ammonia (NH3) in the exhaust. By injecting urea into the exhaust passage, NH3 is introduced into the engine exhaust system upstream of the SCR catalyst, or is generated in the upstream catalyst. Urea is entropically degraded to NH3 under high temperature conditions. SCR promotes the reaction between NH3 and NOx to convert NOx into nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O). However, as the inventors herein have recognized, problems can arise when injecting urea into the exhaust passage. In one example, urea may mix poorly into the exhaust flow (eg, a first portion of the exhaust flow has a higher urea concentration than a second portion of the exhaust flow), which may result in poor coating of the SCR, And...
