Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a battery module including a base insulating member, and more particularly, to a battery module for preventing leakage of an electrolyte solution when the battery module is used.
[0002] This application claims the benefit of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2019-0119919, filed on September 27, 2019, in the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background Art
[0003] Currently, commercially available secondary batteries include nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, nickel-zinc batteries, lithium secondary batteries, etc. Among them, lithium secondary batteries have very little or no memory effect. Therefore, compared with nickel secondary batteries, lithium secondary batteries are more popular due to their advantages such as being able to be charged at any convenient time, having an extremely low self-discharge rate and having a high energy density.
[0004] Lithium secondary batteries mainly use lithium oxides and carbon materials as positive electrode active materials and negative electrode active materials, respectively. Lithium secondary batteries include: an electrode assembly, which includes a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode plate coated with positive electrode active materials and negative electrode active materials, respectively, wherein a separator is placed between the positive electrode plate and the negative electrode plate; and a package or battery pouch case, in which the electrode assembly is sealed together with an electrolyte solution.
[0005] Recently, secondary batteries are widely used not only in small devices such as portable electronic devices, but also in medium and large devices such as vehicles and energy storage systems. In order to be used for medium and large device applications, many secondary batteries are electrically connected to increase capacity and output. In particular, pouch-type secondary batteries are easily stacked, and due to this advantage, pouch-type secondary batteries are widely used in medium and large devices.
[0006] Recently, with the use as an energy source and the growing demand for large-capacity structures, the demand for multiple secondary batteries electrically connected in series and / or parallel and a battery pack including a battery module in which the secondary batteries are accommodated and a battery management system (BMS) has been increasing.
[0007] Generally, a battery pack includes a housing made of metal to protect the plurality of secondary batteries from external impact or to accommodate and store the plurality of secondary batteries. In recent years, the demand for high-capacity battery packs has been growing.
[0008] However, a conventional battery rack includes a plurality of battery modules. Each battery module may include a plurality of secondary batteries. In this case, during the charging and discharging of the plurality of secondary batteries, the volume of the secondary batteries repeatedly expands and contracts, and the electrolyte solution may leak due to abnormal behavior of the secondary batteries. When the leaked electrolyte solution contacts the electrode terminals of adjacent secondary batteries, an electrical short circuit occurs between the plurality of secondary batteries, and thus there is a risk that thermal runaway or fire of the battery module may occur.
[0009] Furthermore, the electrolyte solution is fatally harmful to human health, so when the electrolyte solution leaks from the battery module, there is a high risk of casualties. Summary of the invention

[0043] Figure 1 is a perspective view schematically showing a battery module according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view schematically showing components of a battery module according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 3 is a side view schematically showing a secondary battery of a battery module according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0044] refer to Figures 1 to 3 , the battery module 200 of the present disclosure may include at least one or more cell assemblies 100 , a substrate 210 , and at least one base insulating member 230 .
[0045] Here, the cell assembly 100 may include a plurality of secondary batteries 110 stacked in a front-to-rear direction. Here, the secondary battery 110 refers to a single unit of a rechargeable lithium secondary battery. Specifically, the secondary battery 110 may be a pouch-type secondary battery 110. For example, Figure 2 As shown, when viewed from a direction F, each of the two cell assemblies 100 may include a plurality of pouch-type secondary batteries 110 stacked side by side in a front-to-rear direction.
[0046] In particular, the pouch type secondary battery 110 may include an electrode assembly (not shown), an electrolyte solution (not shown), and a pouch 116 .
[0047] When viewed from direction F (such as Figure 1 As shown in FIG. 1 , each secondary battery 110 can be erected in a direction perpendicular to the ground, its two wide surfaces are arranged in the front-to-back direction, and the sealing portion is arranged in the upper direction, the lower direction, the left direction, and the right direction. In other words, each secondary battery 110 can be erected in the vertical direction. In this specification, unless otherwise specified, the upper direction, the lower direction, the front direction, the rear direction, the left direction, and the right direction are defined when viewed from the F direction.
[0048] Here, the bag 116 may have a concave receiving portion 115. The electrode assembly and the electrolyte solution may be received in the receiving portion 115. Each bag may include an outer insulating layer, a metal layer, and an inner insulating layer, and the inner adhesive layer may be bonded to each other at the edge of the bag to form a sealing portion. A platform portion S may be formed at each of the left and right ends of the positive lead 111A and the negative lead 111B of the secondary battery 110.
[0049] The electrode assembly may be an assembly of an electrode plate coated with an electrode active material and a separator, and may include at least one positive electrode plate, at least one negative electrode plate, and a separator interposed therebetween. The positive electrode plate of the electrode assembly may have a positive electrode tab, and at least one positive electrode tab may be connected to a positive electrode lead 111A.
[0050] Here, one end of the positive lead 111A may be connected to a positive electrode tab and the other end may be exposed through a pouch, and the exposed portion may serve as an electrode terminal of the secondary battery 110 , for example, a positive terminal of the secondary battery 110 .
[0051] The negative electrode plate of the electrode assembly may have a negative electrode tab, and at least one negative electrode tab may be connected to a negative electrode lead 111B. One end of the negative electrode lead 111B may be connected to the negative electrode tab, and the other end may be exposed through the bag, and the exposed portion may be used as an electrode terminal of the secondary battery 110, for example, a negative terminal of the secondary battery 110.
[0052] like Figure 3 As shown, when from Figure 1 When viewed from the direction F of the battery 110, the positive electrode lead 111A and the negative electrode lead 111B may be formed to be located at the left and right ends in opposite directions relative to the center of the secondary battery 110. That is, the positive electrode lead 111A may be disposed at one end (right end) relative to the center of the secondary battery 110. The negative electrode lead 111B may be disposed at the other end (left end) relative to the center of the secondary battery 110.
[0053] For example, Figure 2 As shown, each secondary battery 110 of the cell assembly 100 may have a positive electrode lead 111A and a negative electrode lead 111B extending in the left-right direction.
[0054] Here, the terms indicating directions such as front, back, left, right, up, and down may vary depending on the position of the observer or the placement of the object. However, in the specification, for the convenience of description, directions such as front, back, left, right, up, and down are defined when observed from the direction F.
[0055] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, it is possible to increase the area of the electrode leads without interference between the positive electrode lead 111A and the negative electrode lead 111B of one secondary battery 110 .
[0056] The positive electrode lead 111A and the negative electrode lead 111B may be formed in a plate shape. Specifically, the positive electrode lead 111A and the negative electrode lead 111B may extend in a horizontal direction with their wide surfaces standing upright in the front-rear direction.
[0057] Here, the horizontal direction refers to a direction parallel to the ground when the battery module 200 is placed on the ground, and may be referred to as at least one direction on a plane perpendicular to the vertical direction.
[0058] However, the battery module 200 according to the present disclosure is not limited to the above-described pouch-type secondary battery 110 , and various types of secondary batteries 110 known at the time of filing the application may be used.
[0059] At least two monomer assemblies 100 may be arranged in the front-rear direction. Figure 2 As shown, two single body assemblies 100 may be arranged in the front-rear direction, and the two single body assemblies 100 may be spaced apart from each other by a predetermined distance.
[0060] Specifically, the substrate 210 may be disposed below the cell assembly 100. That is, the substrate 210 may have a larger area than the lower surface of the at least one cell assembly 100 to mount the at least two cell assemblies 100 on the top. The substrate 210 may be in a plate shape extending in a horizontal direction.
[0061] Here, the substrate 210 may include a metal material having high mechanical rigidity, for example, an aluminum alloy, stainless steel or steel.
[0062] The base insulating member 230 may be disposed between the cell assembly 100 and the substrate 210. The base insulating member 230 may include an electrically insulating material. For example, the base insulating member 230 may include polycarbonate.
[0063] The base insulating member 230 may have a receiving portion 232 formed to be recessed in a downward direction to receive a portion of the monomer assembly 100. The receiving portion 232 may be configured to cover the bottom of the monomer assembly 100. For example, the receiving portion 232 may mount seven monomer assemblies 100. The receiving portion 232 may have a front wall, a rear wall, a left wall, and a right wall. The base insulating member 230 may be manufactured using a vacuum mold. The vacuum molding method may include heating the material of the insulating member, placing it in a mold, and sucking air through the holes of the mold to form a shape, followed by cooling, demolding, and trimming.
[0064] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, the present disclosure includes: a substrate 210, which is arranged below the cell assembly 100; and at least one base insulating member 230, which is placed between the cell assembly 100 and the substrate 210 and has a receiving portion 232, which is formed to be recessed in a downward direction to receive a portion of the cell assembly 100, thereby effectively electrically isolating the substrate 210 from the cell assembly 100. In addition, when electrolyte solution leakage occurs due to abnormal behavior of the battery module 200 during charging and discharging, the receiving portion 232 provided in the base insulating member 230 can prevent the leaked electrolyte solution from flowing out of the battery module 200. Therefore, the safety of the battery module 200 when in use can be significantly improved.
[0065] Return to reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 The battery module 200 of the present disclosure may further include a top plate 220 and a top insulating member 240. The top plate 220 may be mounted on the top of the cell assembly 100. That is, the top plate 220 may extend in a horizontal direction.
[0066] Here, the top plate 220 may include a metal material with high mechanical rigidity, such as aluminum alloy, stainless steel or steel.
[0067] The top insulating member 240 may include an electrically insulating material. For example, the top insulating member 240 may include polycarbonate.
[0068] The top insulating member 240 may be disposed between the cell assembly 100 and the top plate 220. The top insulating member 240 includes a receiving portion 242 formed to be recessed in an upward direction to receive a portion of the cell assembly 100. The receiving portion 242 may have a front wall, a rear wall, a left wall, and a right wall.
[0069] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, the present disclosure includes at least one top insulating member 240, which is disposed between the cell assembly 100 and the top plate 220 and has a receiving portion 242 formed to be recessed in an upward direction to receive a portion of the cell assembly 100, thereby effectively electrically isolating the top plate 220 from the cell assembly 100. In addition, when electrolyte solution leakage occurs due to abnormal behavior of the battery module 200 during charging and discharging, the receiving portion 242 provided in the top insulating member 240 can prevent the leaked electrolyte solution from diffusing from the top of the battery module 200. Therefore, the safety of the battery module 200 when in use can be significantly improved.
[0070] Figure 4 FIG. 1 is a partial enlarged view schematically showing some components of a battery module according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0071] refer to Figure 4 And refer again Figure 1 and Figure 2 , the base plate 210 may include a compartment portion 214 extending upward on each of the left and right sides at the lower end of the monomer assembly 100. The compartment portion 214 may extend from the front end of the base plate 210 to the rear end. The compartment portion 214 may have a concave-convex shape. That is, the compartment portion 214 may have an inner side wall 214a bent upward, an upper wall 214b extending to the left and right, and an outer side wall 214c bent downward. The peripheral wall 216 extending in the upward direction may be provided on the left and right peripheries of the base plate 210.
[0072] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, the present disclosure includes a compartment portion 214 extending in an upward direction on each of the left and right sides at the lower end of the cell assembly 100, thereby restricting the left and right movement of the cell assembly 100 mounted on the substrate 210. Therefore, the cell assembly 100 can maintain a stable mounting state on the substrate 210. Therefore, the production efficiency and stability of the battery module 200 can be improved.
[0073] In addition, the top plate 220 may include a compartment portion 224 extending downward on each of the left and right sides at the upper end of the monomer assembly 100. The compartment portion 224 may extend from the front end of the top plate 220 to the rear end. The compartment portion 224 may have a concave-convex shape. That is, the compartment portion 224 may have an inner side wall bent downward, a lower wall extending to the left and right, and an outer side wall bent upward. A peripheral wall 226 extending in a downward direction may be provided on each of the left and right ends of the top plate 220.
[0074] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, the present disclosure includes a compartment portion 224 extending in a downward direction on each of the left and right sides at the upper end of the cell assembly 100, so that the top plate 220 can restrict the top of the cell assembly 100 from moving leftward and rightward. Therefore, the cell assembly 100 cannot move. Therefore, the stability of the battery module 200 can be increased.
[0075] refer to Figure 4 And refer again Figure 2 The base insulating member 230 may include a fixing portion 234 fixed to the compartment portion 214 provided in the substrate 210. The fixing portion 234 may extend leftward and rightward from the receiving portion 232. In other words, the fixing portion 234 may be provided on each of the left and right sides of the receiving portion 232. The fixing portion 234 may extend in a manner of bending at least once to cover the compartment portion 214 of the substrate 210.
[0076] For example, Figure 4 As shown, the fixing portion 234 of the base insulating member 230 may include: an inner bending structure 234a, which is bent from the end of the receiving portion 232 in an upward direction to cover the inner side wall 214a of the compartment portion 214 of the substrate 210; an extension structure 234b, which extends to the left from the inner bending structure 234a to cover the upper wall 214b of the compartment portion 214; an outer bending structure 234c, which is bent from the extension structure 234b in a downward direction; and an end structure 234d, which extends from the outer bending structure 234c along the outer surface of the substrate 210 in a horizontal direction.
[0077] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, the base insulating member 230 includes a fixing portion 234 that extends leftward and rightward from the receiving portion 232 and extends in a manner of bending at least once so as to cover the compartment portion 214 of the substrate 210, thereby stably fixing the base insulating member 230 to the substrate 210. Therefore, it is possible to improve the production efficiency of the battery module 200 and help prevent the base insulating member 230 from being separated from the substrate 210.
[0078] Return to reference Figure 2 The top insulating member 240 may include a fixing portion 244 to be fixed to the compartment portion 224 provided in the top plate 220. The fixing portion 244 may extend leftward and rightward from the receiving portion 232. The fixing portion 244 may extend in a manner of being bent at least once to cover the compartment portion 224 of the top plate 220.
[0079] For example, the fixed portion 244 of the top insulating member 240 may include: an inner bending structure, which bends in a downward direction to cover the inner side wall of the compartment portion 224 of the top plate 220; an extension structure, which extends to the left to cover the lower wall of the compartment portion 224; an outer bending structure, which bends from the extension structure in an upward direction; and an end structure, which extends from the outer bending structure along the outer surface of the top plate 220 in a horizontal direction.
[0080] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, the top insulating member 240 includes a fixing portion 244 extending leftward and rightward from the receiving portion 232 and extending in a manner of bending at least once to cover the compartment portion 224 of the top plate 220, thereby stably fixing the top insulating member 240 to the top plate 220. Therefore, it is possible to improve the production efficiency of the battery module 200 and help prevent the top insulating member 240 from being separated from the top plate 220.
[0081] Return to reference Figure 2 , the base plate 210 may include a stopper 217 located at the inner side to support each side of the front outer side or the rear outer side of the receiving portion 232 of the base insulating member 230. For example, as Figure 2 As shown, the stopper 217 may be provided at each of the front end and the rear end of the base plate 210. The stopper 217 may extend in an upward direction from the base plate 210. That is, the stopper 217 may be in an upright plate shape.
[0082] In addition, the top plate 220 may include a stopper 227 at an inner side to support each of the front outer side or the rear outer side of the receiving portion 242 of the top insulation member 240 in an inward direction.
[0083] According to the configuration of the present disclosure, the base plate 210 and the top plate 220 include the stopper 217 located inside, thereby preventing the cell assembly 100 mounted on the base plate 210 from moving forward or backward due to external impact. Therefore, the safety of the battery module 200 can be effectively improved.
[0084] Return to reference Figure 2 , the battery module 200 may further include a bus bar assembly 280. More specifically, the bus bar assembly 280 may include: at least one bus bar 282, the at least one bus bar 282 being configured to electrically connect the plurality of secondary batteries 110; and at least two bus bar frames 286, the at least two bus bar frames 286 being configured to mount the at least one bus bar 282 on the outside. The at least two bus bar frames 286 may be disposed on each of the left and right sides of the cell assembly 100.
[0085] A cover portion 286 a extending leftward or rightward may be provided at each of the upper and lower ends of the bus bar frame 286 .
[0086] More specifically, the bus bar 282 may include a conductive metal, and may include copper, aluminum, and nickel, for example.
[0087] The busbar frame 286 may include an electrically insulating material. For example, the busbar frame 286 may include a plastic material. More specifically, the plastic material may be polyvinyl chloride.
[0088] Figure 5 is a perspective view schematically showing some components of a battery module according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 6 FIG. 4 is a partial front view schematically showing some components of a battery module according to another embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0089] refer to Figure 5 and Figure 6 And refer again Figure 2 ,and Figure 2 Compared with the base insulating member 230 of the embodiment of the present disclosure, the base insulating member 230A according to another embodiment of the present disclosure may further include a blocking member 236. Figure 2 The base insulating member 230 is the same.
[0090] The base insulating member 230A may include a stopper 236 that is disposed on the compartment portion 214 of the substrate 210 and extends to contact the busbar frame 286. For example, Figure 5As shown, two stoppers 236 may be respectively provided at portions of the base insulating member 230A that contact the two compartment portions 214 provided on the left and right sides of the substrate 210. The stoppers 236 may extend in an upward direction to be connected to (contact) the bottom of the bus bar frame 286. More specifically, the stoppers 236 may extend in an upward direction from the fixing portion 234 to be connected to the lower surface of the cover portion 286a disposed below the bus bar frame 286. The stoppers 236 may be hollow to be a part of the base insulating member 230A.
[0091] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, the base insulating member 230A includes a stopper 236, which is arranged on the compartment portion 214 of the substrate 210 and extends to contact the busbar frame 286, so that the electrolyte solution leaked from the cell assembly 100 can be first collected in the receiving portion 232 provided in the base insulating member 230A, and then the stopper 236 can prevent the electrolyte solution received in the receiving portion 232 from overflowing or leaking due to external impact. The receiving grooves 218h may extend to the left and right to connect the compartments 214 formed at both ends.
[0098] like Fig. 9 As shown, the base insulating member 230C may include an inner groove 211h, which is inserted into the receiving groove 218h. Fig. 9 As shown, inner grooves 211h linearly extending leftward and rightward may be provided at the front and rear ends of the base insulating member 230C, respectively.
[0099] According to such a configuration of the present disclosure, the substrate 210C includes a receiving groove 218h recessed in a downward direction, and the base insulating member 230C includes an inner groove 211h inserted into the receiving groove 218h, so that when the electrolyte solution leaks due to abnormal behavior during charging and discharging of the monomer assembly 100, the leaked electrolyte solution is received in the receiving groove 218h. That is, the receiving groove 218h can prevent the electrolyte solution from moving leftward and rightward to the position where the electrode terminal or bus bar of the monomer assembly 100 is arranged. It is possible to effectively prevent the short circuit of the monomer assembly 100 caused by the leaked electrolyte solution. It is possible to prevent additional accidents, thereby improving the safety of the battery module 200.
