Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present application is generally directed to personal cleansing compositions having increased stability in terms of phase, color and microbial stability, methods thereof and uses thereof. The personal cleansing composition comprises a surfactant system, wherein the surfactant system comprises a fatty acyl isethionate surfactant, and wherein the personal cleansing composition is free of alkyl sulfate or alkyl ether sulfate type surfactants. Background Art

[0002] Personal cleansing compositions are traditionally sold in a variety of forms, such as bar soaps, creams, lotions, and gels. Typically, these products must meet a number of criteria that are acceptable to consumers. These criteria include cleaning effectiveness, skin feel, mildness to the skin, hair, and ocular mucosa, and foam volume. An ideal personal cleanser should gently clean the skin or hair, cause little or no irritation, and should not overdry the skin or hair after frequent use.

[0003] Anionic surfactants are widely used in personal cleansing compositions. Many of these anionic surfactants contain elongated micelles and are viscoelastic, which is very important, especially in the design of shampoos and body washes. In most personal cleansing compositions, alkyl sulfates or alkyl ether sulfates predominate as anionic surfactants.

[0004] The formulation of environmentally friendly personal cleansing compositions is becoming a major challenge to meet the new expectations of consumers, especially towards eco-designed and / or natural products. There is a need to propose personal cleansing compositions free of alkyl sulfates and alkyl ether sulfates, which have good cosmetic qualities, mainly in terms of viscosity, creamy foam, clean skin feel.

[0005] Consumers prefer sulfate-free personal cleansing compositions due to perceived mildness and desirable sensory experience. It would be desirable to provide personal cleansing products comprising alternative mild surfactant systems having relatively improved ecotoxicity or eco-friendly environmental characteristics.

[0006] Personal cleansing compositions have been developed having a surfactant system comprising a fatty acyl isethionate surfactant and being free of alkyl sulfate or alkyl ether sulfate type surfactants. Fatty acyl isethionates are highly desirable mild anionic surfactants in personal cleansing products for hair or skin because fatty acyl isethionates lather well, are mild to the skin, and have good emollient properties.

[0007] However, fatty acyl isethionates may result in unstable personal cleansing compositions that may exhibit inconsistent rheological characteristics. Phase separation has been observed for personal cleansing compositions containing fatty acyl isethionates and a fragrance component after storage at 40°C for 3 months. The phase separation may be attributed to the presence of hydrophobic molecules in the fragrance component or fatty acids that have been generated by the hydrolysis of the fatty acyl isethionates. The initial worm-like and spherical micellar compositions may separate into an upper lamellar phase and a lower micellar phase. The lamellar phase is typically a relatively highly ordered surfactant-rich phase that has relatively little water and a low density, making the lamellar phase buoyant.

[0008] Therefore, there is a need to provide personal cleansing compositions comprising fatty acyl isethionate surfactants, free of alkyl sulfate or alkyl ether sulfate type surfactants, and having improved phase stability and a satisfactorily consistent rheological profile.

[0009] There is a need to provide personal cleansing compositions comprising fatty acyl isethionate surfactants, free of alkyl sulfate or alkyl ether sulfate type surfactants, and having acceptable or improved stability with respect to color and antimicrobial stability.

[0010] Additionally, there remains a need for personal cleansing compositions that clean effectively even when containing lower amounts of active surfactants than typical cleansing products, yet also have good aesthetic properties such as good lather, and are thick and creamy in texture, silky to the touch, and provide a conditioning benefit. [0048] Beneficial Effects

[0049] Personal cleansing compositions containing fatty acyl isethionates have been observed to phase separate after storage at 40°C for 3 months (see Comparative Example 1 for an example). The mechanism of phase separation may lie in the hydrolysis of fatty acyl isethionates catalyzed by other anionic surfactants such as fatty acyl sarcosinates in acidic media (e.g., pH 5).

[0050] Increasing the pH will slow down the hydrolysis kinetics, however, at neutral pH, the zero shear viscosity of the personal cleansing composition may collapse. Without the addition of any electrolytes, only a small portion of the anionic surfactant (e.g., fatty acyl sarcosinate) in deprotonated form is required to form a stable worm-like micellar phase. The pH of the personal cleansing composition cannot be raised above the pKa of the anionic surfactant, otherwise, the viscosity peak will be lost and the personal cleansing composition will not meet the rheological characteristics.

[0051] Because of the need to increase pH in order to control the hydrolysis kinetics of fatty acyl isethionates, new combinations of ingredients are needed to build a consistent viscosity for personal cleansing compositions.

[0052] It has been found that personal cleansing compositions need to comprise from 0.05% to 5%, preferably from 0.1% to 2%, more preferably from 0.5% to 1.5%, most preferably from 0.75% to 1.0%, by weight of the composition, of a nonionic surfactant, wherein the nonionic surfactant comprises a fatty alkanolamide; and from 0.01% to 2.0%, preferably from 0.05% to 1.5%, more preferably from 0.07% to 0.50%, most preferably from 0.1% to 0.15%, by weight of the composition, of a hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside.

[0053] The desired viscosity of the personal cleansing composition can be achieved by extending the micelles at a higher pH of 5.5 to 7, preferably 5.5 to 6.5, more preferably 5.6 to 6.1.

[0054] The selection of nonionic surfactant and hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside at specific levels and weight ratios is described in more detail below.

[0055] In addition, it has been observed that certain ingredients (e.g., fragrance components with hydrophobic materials) may play a role not only in phase separation, but also in decolorization. Without the addition of any fragrance components, other ingredients (such as nonionic surfactants and hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside) may also cause decolorization of personal cleansing compositions. Therefore, it is necessary to develop suitable preservative systems to provide acceptable or improved color and antimicrobial stability.

[0056] The preservative may be selected from the group consisting of alkali metal metabisulfites, alkali metal sulfites, alkali metal bisulfites, alkali metal dithionites, and mixtures thereof. The preservative may help prevent any discoloration of the personal cleansing composition as well as provide antimicrobial efficacy, as described in detail below.

[0107] The fatty alkanolamide may preferably be selected from the group consisting of cocamide MEA, cocamide DEA, lauramide MEA, lauramide DEA, stearamide MEA, myristamide DEA, stearamide DEA and mixtures thereof.

[0108] Most preferably, the fatty alkanolamide may be cocamide MEA.

[0109] Fatty alkanolamides can help to significantly increase the lather creaminess of personal cleansing compositions.

[0110] Additionally, the personal cleansing composition comprises from 0.01% to 2%, preferably from 0.05% to 1.5%, more preferably from 0.07% to 0.50%, most preferably from 0.1% to 0.15%, by weight of the composition, of a hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside.

[0111] The hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside may be selected from the group consisting of PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate, PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate, PEG-20 methyl glucose sesquistearate, PEG-20 methyl glucose distearate, PEG-80 methyl glucose laurate, PEG-20 methyl glucose sesquistearate, PEG-120 methyl glucose triisostearate, and mixtures thereof.

[0112] Preferably, the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside may be selected from the group consisting of PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate, PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate, PEG-20 methyl glucose sesquistearate, PEG-20 methyl glucose distearate and mixtures thereof.

[0113] More preferably, the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside may be selected from the group consisting of PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate, PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate, and mixtures thereof. Most preferably, the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside may comprise PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate.

[0114] Hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside is a naturally derived thickener used to provide mildness in personal cleansing compositions.

[0115] Hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucosides are methyl glucose ethers that have been esterified with fatty acids such as oleic acid or stearic acid.

[0116] The hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside can also aid in conditioning, typically by reducing the amount of foam in personal cleansing compositions.

[0117] When a personal cleansing composition comprises a fatty alkanolamide and a hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside as described above, the phase stability of the personal cleansing composition is improved. The fatty alkanolamide and the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside can effectively construct a personal cleansing composition with a desired and consistent viscosity. The fatty alkanolamide and the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside can interact by extending from spherical micelles to worm-like micelles made of fatty acyl isethionate surfactants or fatty acyl isethionate surfactants and fatty acyl sarcosinates.

[0118] First, a preliminary evaluation of different thickeners was performed. Figure 1 Graph showing the effect of thickeners and their relative concentrations on enhancing the viscosity of a personal cleansing composition such as Comparative Example 1 as exemplified in the Examples section. The personal cleansing composition should have a target viscosity of about 4 Pa.s (4000 centipoise). At a 2 wt. % level, hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucosides such as PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate or PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate were found to significantly increase the viscosity of the personal cleansing composition compared to the same levels of other types of thickeners such as acrylate copolymers, PEG-200 hydrogenated palm glycerides with PEG-7 coconut glycerides, sorbitan caprylate with glyceryl oleate, or isostearamide MIPA with glyceryl laurate.

[0119] In addition, fatty alkanolamides such as cocamide MEA showed good response.

[0120] Figure 1 Other thickeners not shown in the results resulted in unacceptable precipitated gels. Unsuitable thickeners were PEG-14M, PEG-2M, PQ-10, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose or sodium carboxymethylcellulose.

[0121] Cationic polymers such as polyquaternium-10 are too hydrophilic and provide relatively weak interactions with the surfactant system.

[0122] Anionic polymers (ie, acrylate copolymers) also provide too weak an interaction with the surfactant of the composition due to too high an ionic strength.

[0123] Hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside is believed to effectively interact with surfactant micelles due to its relatively high number of hydrophobic blocks and compatibility with the surfactant system.

[0124] Figure 2 Graph showing the effect of a thickening system at various levels of electrolyte (sodium chloride) on enhancing the viscosity of a personal cleansing composition (such as exemplified by Comparative Example 1 as detailed in the Examples section).

[0125] For different levels of sodium chloride of 0%, 1% and 2% by weight of the composition, it has been found that a combination of 2% by weight cocamide MEA and 1% by weight PEG-20 methyl glucose trioleate provides adequate viscosity.

[0126] In particular, the same results were obtained for the combination of 1 wt% cocamide MEA and 0.12 wt% PEG-20 methyl glucose trioleate. The weight ratio of fatty alkanolamide to hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside was then 8.3.

[0127] The viscosity target was achieved by adding 2 wt% sodium chloride. For 1 wt% sodium chloride, the viscosity was between 2000 and 4000 centipoise, which is acceptable.

[0128] Interestingly, these results were also observed in the Examples section below without the addition of any electrolytes such as sodium chloride. Thus, any addition of electrolytes is merely an option to further adjust the viscosity of the personal cleansing composition if necessary.

[0129] Additionally, the levels of both the fatty alkanolamide and the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside may be reduced in a certain weight ratio to provide the desired viscosity of the composition.

[0130] Thus, the weight ratio of fatty alkanolamide to hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside may range from 2 to 12, preferably from 5 to 10, more preferably from 8 to 9.

[0131] Alternatively, the fatty alkanolamide may comprise cocamide MEA, and the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside may be selected from the group consisting of PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate, PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate and mixtures thereof, wherein the weight ratio of the fatty alkanolamide to the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside ranges from 5 to 12, preferably from 7 to 10, more preferably from 8 to 9.

[0132] Preferably, the fatty alkanolamide may comprise cocamide MEA and the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside may comprise PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate, wherein the weight ratio of the fatty alkanolamide to the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside ranges from 5 to 12, preferably from 7 to 10, more preferably from 8 to 9.

[0133] preservative

[0134] Increasing the pH may have an adverse effect on the preservative system. Salicylic acid between pH 5.5 and 7 may be deprotonated and may not act as a robust preservative.

[0135] Additionally, the addition of fatty alkanolamides (eg, cocamide MEA) and hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside as described above may result in discoloration of the personal cleansing composition.

[0136] Thus, the personal cleansing compositions comprise from 0.01% to 1.0%, preferably from 0.02% to 0.4%, more preferably from 0.05% to 0.2%, most preferably from 0.05% to 0.1% preservative by weight of the composition.

[0137] The preservative may be selected from the group consisting of alkali metal metabisulfites, alkali metal sulfites, alkali metal bisulfites, alkali metal dithionites and mixtures thereof. The alkali metal may be lithium, sodium or potassium.

[0138] The preservative may be selected from the group consisting of sodium metabisulfite, sodium sulfite, sodium dithionite, potassium sulfite, sodium bisulfite, potassium bisulfite and mixtures thereof. Preferably, the preservative may include sodium bisulfite.

[0140] Preservatives may also include salicylates and benzoates, wherein the total amount of salicylates and benzoates is from 0.2% to 0.9%, preferably from 0.5% to 0.85%, more preferably from 0.75% to 0.85% by weight of the composition.

[0141] The weight ratio of salicylate to benzoate may be 1:1.20 to 1:1.10, preferably 1:1.175 to 1:1.125.

[0142] The personal cleansing composition may comprise from 0.05% to 0.2%, preferably from 0.05% to 0.1%, of a preservative by weight of the composition, wherein the preservative is selected from the group consisting of sodium metabisulfite, sodium sulfite, sodium dithionite, potassium sulfite, sodium bisulfite, potassium bisulfite and mixtures thereof, more preferably wherein the preservative comprises sodium bisulfite; and additionally salicylates and benzoates, wherein the total amount of salicylates and benzoates is from 0.2% to 0.9%, preferably from 0.5% to 0.85%, more preferably from 0.75% to 0.85%, by weight of the composition.

[0143] The salicylate may be sodium salicylate. The benzoate may be sodium benzoate.

[0144] Preservatives as described herein may also prevent any discoloration of personal cleansing compositions containing betaine or fragrance components. In fact, some fragrance components may contain aldehydes and amines that may react together and may provide discoloration over time.

[0145] In addition, the preservative may exhibit relatively strong antimicrobial efficacy at the pH range of 5.5 to 7, especially at pH 6.4.

[0146] Preservatives may also contribute to some extent to the antimicrobial preservation of the personal cleansing composition.

[0147] Electrolytes

[0148] The personal cleansing composition may further comprise from 0.05% to 5%, preferably from 0.5% to 4%, more preferably from 1.0% to 2% electrolyte by weight of the composition. The addition of electrolytes may help to extend the micelles of the surfactant system and further improve the viscosity of the composition if desired.

[0149] The electrolyte may be selected from the group consisting of sodium or potassium citrate, calcium chloride, calcium bromide, zinc chloride, barium chloride, calcium nitrate, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium iodide, sodium bromide, ammonium bromide, sodium sulfate, and mixtures thereof.

[0150] The electrolyte may preferably be selected from the group comprising sodium citrate or potassium citrate, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, and mixtures thereof.

[0151] Most preferably, the personal cleansing composition may further comprise from 1.0% to 2%, by weight of the composition, of an electrolyte, wherein the electrolyte is sodium chloride.

[0181] Test Method

[0182] It should be understood that the test methods disclosed in the Test Methods section of this application should be used to determine the corresponding parameter values of this invention as described and protected by applicant's invention.

[0183] Cone / Plate Viscosity Measurement

[0184] The viscosity of the personal cleansing composition was measured by a cone / plate Brookfield DV12T from Brookfield Engineering Laboratories (Stoughton, MA). The cone (spindle CPA-41z) used had a diameter of 24 mm and an angle of 3°. The viscosity was measured using a steady-state flow test at a temperature of 26.5° C. for 2 s -1 The sample volume was 2.5 mL.

[0185] Microbial resistance measurement

[0186] Test microorganisms

[0187] Cultures of the following microorganisms are used: Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Burkholderia cepacian, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter gergoviae, Serratia marcescens, and Staphylococcus aureus. The live microorganisms used in the test must not exceed five passages removed from the original culture. For the purpose of the test, one passage is defined as the transfer of a microorganism from an established culture to a fresh medium. All transfers are counted. With respect to maintaining microorganisms by seed batch technology, each cycle of freezing, thawing, and recovery in a fresh medium is considered a transfer. Seed stock technology should be used for long-term storage of cultures.

[0188] Table 1. Test microorganisms

[0189]

[0190] Preparation of inoculum

[0191] Prior to testing, a recently recovered stock culture of each of the designated microorganisms is inoculated onto the surface of a suitable volume of solid agar medium.

[0192] To harvest bacterial and C. albicans cultures, sterile saline solution was used to obtain between 1×10 5 and 1×10 7 To harvest the cells of A. brasiliensis, a sterile saline solution containing 0.05% polysorbate 80 was used, and enough sterile saline solution was added to obtain a count of 1×10 7 Up to 1×10 8 cfu / mL.

[0193] To form a pooled inoculum, aliquots of each of the bacteria or yeast and molds desired for the library described in Table 1 were mixed.

[0194] program

[0195] The test can be carried out in two sterile, capped bacteriological containers of suitable size into which a sufficient volume of product has been transferred. Each container is inoculated with v of the prepared standardized inoculum and mixed. The volume of the suspended inoculum used is 1.0% of the volume of the product. The concentration of the test microorganism added to the product is such that the final concentration of the test preparation after inoculation is between 1×10 5 and 1×10 7 cfu / mL between products.

[0196] The initial concentration of viable microorganisms in each test formulation was estimated based on the concentration of microorganisms in each inoculum in the standardized inoculum as determined by the plate count method.

[0197] Incubate the inoculated containers at 20°C to 25°C. Record any changes in appearance observed at these intervals. Determine the number of cfu present in each test formulation at the applicable interval by a plate count procedure. Inactivators (neutralizers) for specific antimicrobial agents are incorporated into the plate count or appropriate dilutions are prepared for plating. Using the calculated concentration (cfu / mL) present at the start of the test, calculate the change in the log10 value of the concentration (cfu / mL) of each microorganism at the applicable test interval, and express the change in terms of logarithmic reduction.

[0198] Product pH Measurement

[0199] First, calibrate the Metler TOLEDO pH meter. This is done by starting the pH meter and waiting 30 seconds. Then, remove the electrode from the storage solution, rinse the electrode with reverse osmosis (RO) water, and clean it with a scientific cleaning wipe such as Carefully wipe the electrode. Immerse the electrode in pH 4 buffer and press the calibration button. Wait until the pH icon stops flashing. Rinse the electrode with RO water and wipe the electrode carefully with a scientific cleaning wipe. Then, immerse the electrode in pH 7 buffer and wait until the pH icon stops flashing. Rinse the electrode with RO water and wipe it carefully with a scientific cleaning wipe. Then, immerse the electrode in pH 9 buffer and wait until the pH icon stops flashing. Rinse the electrode with distilled RO water and wipe it carefully with a scientific cleaning wipe. The pH meter is now calibrated and can be used to test the pH of a solution.

[0200] Color Change Test Method

[0201] The color change test method is used to monitor color stability and assess whether discoloration has been prevented or reduced. In the color change test method, the composition to be evaluated is punched into a size of (62mm*37mm*16.5mm). The color of the composition to be tested is evaluated via transmission mode using a desktop spectrophotometer (X-rite Ci 7800 instrument). The composition to be tested is placed between two orifice plates in the measurement chamber. The incident light is transmitted through the composition to be tested, and the absorbance of the light is recorded within the wavelength range of 360nm to 780nm. The resulting curve is converted into various color scales L*, a* and b* values.

[0202] L* represents the lightness of the color, a* represents the green / red axis, and b* represents the blue / yellow axis.

[0203] Color analysis is based on individual color components in the Hunter L*a*b* color space, where:

[0204] L* = lightness (L* = 0 gives black, and L* = 100 indicates diffuse white)

[0205] a* = red / green (a*, negative values represent green, while positive values represent red)

[0206] b*=yellow to blue (b*, negative values represent blue, and positive values represent yellow)

[0207] To evaluate the color stability of the compositions, the color of the compositions was measured when they were freshly prepared and after aging at 75°C for 4 hours.

[0208] Given ΔL*Δa*Δb*, the total difference or distance on the Hunter L*a*b* scale can be expressed as a single value, called ΔE*.

[0209] ΔE*=((L*1-L*2) 2 +(a*1-a*2) 2 +(b*1-b*2) 2 ) 1 / 2 .

[0210] in

[0211] L*1, a*1, b*1 are the values for a freshly prepared composition ("initial"); L*2, a*2, b*2 are the values for an aged composition ("final").

[0212] Higher ΔE* values indicate a greater color shift from the initial value, which is undesirable, meaning that more color has been formed within the personal cleansing composition.

[0230] Phase stability and enhanced viscosity

[0231] The personal cleansing composition should have an initial viscosity of about 4 Pa.s (4000 centipoise) and should have a viscosity of less than 15 Pa.s (15000 centipoise) but not less than 3 Pa.s (3000 centipoise) after storage at 60°C for 3 weeks.

[0232] Comparative Example 1 is a personal cleansing composition comprising sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate and cocamidopropyl betaine at pH 5.0. After storage at 60°C for 3 weeks, phase separation was observed and the initial viscosity decreased.

[0233] The top floating layer is the lamellar phase layer, which is relatively highly ordered and contains the above surfactants with relatively less water. Due to their lower density, the lamellar phase floats and is the upper layer. The micellar phase is the lower layer.

[0234] Free fatty acids derived from sodium cocoyl isethionate or sodium lauroyl sarcosinate (due to the corresponding hydrolysis of the anionic surfactants) can contribute to the phase transition and phase separation from the micellar phase to the lamellar phase.

[0235] Initially, the hydrolysis of sodium cocoyl isethionate or sodium lauroyl sarcosinate results in an increase in viscosity due to the elongation of worm-like micelles. However, after a certain amount of free fatty acids are generated, the worm-like and spherical micelles transform from worm-like micelles into larger, more complex aggregates (such as discoid micelles or gel networks). At this point, these structures reduce the number of entanglements, reduce flow resistance, and increase the fluidity of the system, resulting in a decrease in viscosity. The lamellar phase separates from the micellar phase.

[0236] When the pH increases from 5.0 to 6.1 (in Comparative Example 2), the hydrolysis kinetics of sodium cocoyl isethionate and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate have slowed down. No phase separation is observed. However, the rheology of the personal cleansing composition is still not satisfactory to the consumer.

[0237] In Comparative Example 3, 1 wt% of cocamide MEA has been added which improves the viscosity properties of the personal cleansing composition.

[0238] Examples 1 and 2 show that the combination of cocamide MEA as the fatty alkanolamide and PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate as the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside can build the texture of the composition at the desired enhanced viscosity. It has been found that the elongation from spherical micelles to worm-like micelles can be demonstrated by Cryo-TEM and NMR.

[0239] When PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate is replaced by Lubrizol as Glucamate in Example 1 or Example 2, TM Similar results were obtained when using PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate supplied by DOE-120. The aim was to achieve an initial viscosity target of approximately 4 Pa.s.

[0240] like Figure 1Initially, it was shown that when the hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside (such as that produced by Lubrizol as Glucamate TM LT) without any fatty alkanolamide, was also found to enhance the composition texture better than the following at the desired enhanced viscosity:

[0241] -PEG-200 Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides / PEG-7 Cocoyl Glycerides, by Evonik as

[0242] 200MB supply;

[0243] -Acrylate copolymers, manufactured by Lubrizol as Aqua SF-2 supplies;

[0244] - Sorbitan caprylate / glyceryl oleate, by Evonik as REMO

[0245] 95MB supply; or

[0246] - Isostearamide MIPA / glyceryl laurate, supplied as SPA 80 by Evonik.

[0247] In particular, cellulosic type polymers such as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose or sodium carboxymethylcellulose fail to build the desired viscosity and precipitation may be observed.

[0248] Even at different electrolyte levels, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose was not an interesting thickener, e.g. Figure 2 shown.

[0249] When a mixture of a fatty alkanolamide (such as cocamide MEA) and a hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside (such as PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate) is used, the desired viscosity of the personal cleansing composition can be achieved at a weight ratio of fatty alkanolamide to hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside of 2 or 8.3 (see Figure 2 ).

[0250] Thus, it has been found that the weight ratio of fatty alkanolamide to hydrophobically modified ethoxylated methyl glucoside ranges from 2 to 12, preferably from 5 to 10, more preferably from 8 to 9 (especially in Example 1 where the weight ratio is 8.3).

[0251] Antimicrobial and bleaching stability

[0252] In terms of color stability, a personal cleansing composition should have a ΔE* as small as possible after storage at 60°C for 3 weeks.

[0253] Example 1 has a similar ΔE* to Comparative Example 2. Example 1 is an acceptable personal cleansing composition.

[0254] In addition, it is necessary to further prevent discoloration after storage at 60°C for 3 weeks.

[0255] When sodium bisulfite was added in Example 2 versus Example 1, the reduction in ΔE* obtained indicated that discoloration had been prevented.

[0256] As a dual function, sodium bisulfite as a preservative is not only effective in preventing discoloration of personal cleansing compositions, but also exhibits strong antimicrobial efficacy at the claimed pH.

[0257] Comparative Example 2 has an increased pH compared to Comparative Example 1, the protonated salicylic acid is not strong enough to provide any antimicrobial preservative effect.

[0258] When comparing Comparative Example 4 to Comparative Example 3, a single addition of sodium bisulfite can help to significantly increase the antimicrobial preservation effect.

[0259] When comparing Example 2 to Example 1, a single addition of sodium bisulfite can help to significantly increase the antimicrobial preservation effect.

[0260] Thus, preservatives such as alkali metal metabisulfite, alkali metal sulfite, alkali metal bisulfite (e.g. sodium bisulfite), alkali metal dithionite or mixtures thereof can prevent any discoloration at said pH 5.5 to 7 and enhance the antimicrobial preservative effect of the personal cleansing composition.
