Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to a composition comprising the fungicide active ingredient pyridobactamide. Such a composition can be used to combat, prevent or control the infection of plant pathogenic diseases on crop plants in agriculture.
[0002] WO 2016 / 122802 and WO 2016 / 109257 disclose certain pyridine amide compounds and their use as fungicides, including (1S)-2,2-bis(4-fluorophenyl)-1-methylethyl N-{[3-(acetyloxy)-4-methoxy-2-pyridinyl]carbonyl}-L-alaninate, ie, pyridine amide (CAS No. 1961312-55-9). Pyridine amide has been shown to be particularly effective in controlling wheat leaf spot caused by Mycosphaerella graminicola (Septoria tritici) and other fungal pathogens. WO 2018 / 204435, WO 2018 / 204436, WO 2018 / 204437, WO 2019 / 042800 and WO 2019 / 101580 disclose certain fungicidal compositions comprising a combination of pyridobactamide and another fungicidally active ingredient.
[0003] It has been found that in certain pyridobactamide-containing compositions, in particular those which are emulsion concentrates, pyridobactamide can undergo chemical degradation, which can have a negative impact on the activity of agrochemical formulations containing the active ingredient. Methods of limiting or preventing this chemical degradation of pyridobactamide have therefore been sought.
[0004] According to the present invention, there is provided a fungicidal composition comprising:
[0005] (i) pyridobactamide as a fungicidal active ingredient; and
[0006] (ii) an organic acid selected from aliphatic C2 to C8 hydroxymonocarboxylic acids or aliphatic C2 to C8 di- or tricarboxylic acids.
[0007] For practical purposes, the fungicidal compositions according to the invention have a very advantageous level of biological activity for protecting plants from diseases caused by fungi. In particular, they are used to prevent or control infection of useful plants (cereal plants, in particular wheat) by plant pathogens selected from (i) Mycosphaeria graminicola (Septoria tritici), Puccinia recondita or Puccinia striiformis.
[0008] Surprisingly, it has now been found that the addition of an organic acid selected from aliphatic C3 to C8 hydroxymonocarboxylic acids or aliphatic C2 to C8 di- or tricarboxylic acids (e.g. lactic acid) to certain compositions comprising pyridobactamide significantly improves the chemical stability (i.e. eliminates or limits degradation) of the pyridobactamide active ingredient component and thus improves the effective storage life and activity of fungicidal compositions for crop protection applications containing the active ingredient. Although not fully understood at present, it is believed that this chemical degradation of pyridobactamide may be triggered by certain emulsifying agents (emulsifiers), or by other ingredients present in such compositions (e.g. formulation inerts, other biocidally active ingredients, or indeed small amounts of chemical impurities present in these ingredients), which may be due to batch variability in the supply of raw materials for agrochemical formulation purposes.
[0009] According further to the present invention, there is provided an aqueous composition comprising the fungicidal composition according to the present invention, optionally further comprising one or more adjuvants or carriers.
[0010] Still further according to the present invention, there is provided a method of controlling or preventing infestation of crops of useful plants by phytopathogenic microorganisms, wherein a fungicidally effective amount of a composition according to the invention is applied to the plants, parts thereof or the locus thereof.
[0011] Even further according to the present invention, there is provided the use of an organic acid selected from an aliphatic C2 to C8 hydroxymonocarboxylic acid or an aliphatic C2 to C8 di- or tricarboxylic acid as a chemical stabilizer for pyridobactamide in a fungicidal composition such as an emulsifiable concentrate, wherein the organic acid is present in an amount of 0.02% to 1.5% by weight of the composition.

[0057] The compositions of the present invention may be prepared according to standard formulation methods known to those skilled in the art.
[0058] Examples :
[0059] The following examples serve to illustrate the invention, and in particular to illustrate how the addition of an organic acid according to the invention to a composition comprising pyridobactamide affects the chemical stability of the pyridobactamide active ingredient (i.e. eliminates or limits degradation) compared to a composition without the organic acid or an organic acid not according to the invention. See Tables 1 to 4 below.
[0060] Each composition of samples 1-1 to 1-11, 2-1 to 2-14, 3-1 to 3-8 and 4-1 to 4-3 was prepared by weighing an emulsifier (if present, refer to Tables 1 to 4) into a glass vial, adding a solvent (N,N-dimethyldecylamide, M10 or methyl benzoate), whereby the sample was then mixed on a roller until a homogenous emulsion was formed. Acid (if present) was added to the vial and the sample was placed back on the roller for at least 2 hours. Pyridine (technical grade AI) was then added to the vial and roller mixing was continued until complete dissolution. Each sample was then divided into two equal parts and stored at -18°C and 54°C for 14 days and then analyzed by standard HPLC techniques for the remaining pyridine content, a relative measure between storage at -18°C and 54°C, where 100% indicates an unchanged sample.
[0061] Emulsifiers used in these examples include 8320 (Stepan Company, USA), which is polyethylene glycol-polypropylene glycol monobutyl ether (CAS No. 9038-95-3); LF 300 (BASF, USA), which contains ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymer monoisotridecyl ether; Marlox TM RT 64 (Sasol Chemicals, South Africa), which contains ethoxylated, propoxylated C16-18 alcohol (>=2.5 EO / PO, CAS No. 68002-96-0); or Emulsogen TM EL360 (Clariant Ltd.), which comprises a condensation product of castor oil and ethylene oxide.
[0062] The solvent used in these examples is M-10 (Stepan Company, USA), which is N,N-dimethyldecylamide or methyl benzoate (Bolin Chemical Co., Ltd., Italy).
[0063] Use lactic acid as a 90% solution such as PF 90 (PuracBiochem BV, The Netherlands). Other organic acids were used as pure compounds.
[0064] Pyridobactamide (structure below) was prepared according to the methods described in WO 2016 / 122802 and WO 2016 / 109257.
[0065]
[0066] The amounts of pyridobactamide active ingredient, emulsifier, solvent and organic acid in each sample are identified in Tables 1 to 4 based on % w / w in the corresponding samples.
[0067] Table 1 : Content of pyridobactamide active ingredient (AI) in compositions comprising pyridobactamide and lactic acid after storage (14 days at 54°C relative to -18°C) in the presence of different alkoxylated emulsifiers.
[0068]
[0069]
[0070] As can be seen from Table 1, for sample 1-1, the solution of pyridobactamide remained essentially unchanged. For samples 1-3, 1-5, 1-7, 1-9 and 1-11 according to the present invention (lactic acid was present), the degradation of pyridobactamide was significantly lower than that of samples 1-2, 1-4, 1-6 and 1-10 (these are direct controls without the presence of lactic acid).
[0071] Table 2: Content of pyridobactamide active ingredient (AI) in compositions comprising pyridobactamide and an organic acid according to the invention (Samples 2-6 to 2-14) and not according to the invention (Samples 2-1 to 2-5) after storage (14 days at 54°C relative to -18°C).
[0072]
[0073] As can also be seen from Table 2, for sample 2-1, the solution of pyrithione remained essentially unchanged in terms of the active ingredient content. For sample 2-2, pyrithione was significantly degraded in the presence of an alkoxylated emulsifier. For samples 2-3 to 2-5, pyrithione was also significantly degraded in the presence of an organic acid not according to the present invention. For samples 2-6 to 2-14 according to the present invention, the degradation of pyrithione was significantly lower (less than about 5% degradation) than samples 2-2 to 2-5 (these are direct controls without the presence of an organic acid or with an organic acid not according to the present invention).
[0074] Table 3: Content of pyridobactamide active ingredient (AI) in compositions comprising pyridobactamide and citric acid (according to the invention) in different amounts after storage (14 days at 54°C relative to -18°C).
[0075]
[0076] It can also be seen from Table 3 that for sample 3-1, the solution of pyridobactamide remained essentially unchanged. Compared with sample 3-2 without citric acid, all samples 3-3 to 3-8 showed significantly lower degradation or no degradation.
[0077] Table 4: Content of pyridobactamide active ingredient (AI) in compositions comprising pyridobactamide and lactic acid (according to the invention) after storage (14 days at 54°C relative to -18°C) with methyl benzoate as solvent.
[0078]
[0079] It can also be seen from Table 4 that for sample 4-1, the solution of pyridobactamide in methyl benzoate remained essentially unchanged in terms of AI content after storage. However, as shown in sample 4-2, the inclusion of an emulsifier resulted in significant degradation of pyridobactamide. Sample 4-3 illustrates that the degradation of pyridobactamide was significantly reduced with the additional inclusion of lactic acid.
[0080] The data in Tables 1 to 4 show the clear beneficial effect of using an aliphatic C2 to C8 hydroxymonocarboxylic acid or an aliphatic C2 to C8 di- or tricarboxylic acid in the chemical stabilization of active ingredients in emulsion compositions comprising pyridobactamide in a range of different formulation environments.
