Description

Title of the invention: LANYARD, FALL ARREST LANYARD AND RIDING HARNESS Technical field

[0001] The invention relates to a lanyard and more preferably to a fall arrest lanyard and to a rope harness comprising such a fall arrest lanyard. Prior art

[0002] In the field of work at height, it is conventional to connect a worker at height to an anchor point by means of a lanyard and an energy absorber. In the event of a fall, the worker at height tightens the lanyard and applies a force to the energy absorber. The energy absorber absorbs at least part of the energy from the fall to prevent the falling person from experiencing excessive forces.

[0003] It is known from document US2011 / 0100766 to connect a user and a fixed anchor point by means of an energy absorber. The energy absorber is fixed to the anchor point and it has a strap wound around a drum. The drum is rotatably mounted to wind or unwind the strap depending on the movements of the user. This configuration is not advantageous because the energy absorber is fixedly mounted to the anchor point.

[0004] There are different configurations of lanyards associated with an energy absorber. It is known from document US9174073 to fix two energy absorbers in the back of a roping harness. Each of the energy absorbers is provided with a drum around which a strap or a rope ending with a carabiner is wound. The drum is associated with a spring which opposes a force during the unwinding phase and which winds the strap or the rope. The drum is installed in a housing defining a hanging hole and a connector fixes the housing with the roping harness. The carabiners are intended to be fixed to the hanging point. A substantially similar configuration is disclosed in document US8181744 or in document FR3042717.

[0005] Document US9913999 discloses an energy absorber having a rotating drum for winding and unwinding a rope. The rope is terminated by a carabiner intended to be attached to an anchor point. The housing receiving the drum is attached to a connector intended to be attached to the roping harness. The connector and the housing are connected by a strap capable of partially tearing during a fall to absorb energy. During the fall, seams give way, absorbing energy and increasing the distance between the connector and the housing.

[0006] It should be noted that the weight of the energy absorber is applied in continuous on the user and generally in a high position in the back, or even in a sternal position. The weight of the absorber tends to shift the position of the user's center of gravity and can have a significant effect on their movements and in the accelerated onset of fatigue as they move.

[0007] In another technical field, document FRI 124703 discloses a balancer intended to suspend tools at a predetermined height. The balancer has a housing enclosing the drum around which a rope is wound. The rope is terminated by a carabiner intended to be attached to the tool. The housing is provided with a suspension hook closed by a movable finger. The hook is intended to be attached to the suspension point. The hook is mounted to rotate around a substantially vertical axis. Subject of the invention

[0008] An object of the invention is to provide a lanyard which is easy to use while being able to reduce the fatigue of a user.

[0009] This result is achieved by means of a lanyard comprising: - a connector provided with a body having a handle portion extended by a hook portion defining an opening and a finger fixed to the body and mounted to move between a closed position closing the opening to define a ring with the body and an open position intended to allow insertion / extraction of an element through the opening; - a wire element; - a reel configured to wind or unwind the wire element, the wire element having a first end fixed to a drum of the reel and a second end mounted to move relative to the drum.

[0010] The lanyard is remarkable in that the reel is mounted immobile relative to the body and in that the drum is arranged in a cavity defined by the handle, the wire element winding in the cavity around the drum and the handle defining an exit slot for the wire element.

[0011] Advantageously, the first end of the wire element is inseparable from the connector.

[0012] In a particular configuration, the finger is mounted to move in a plane of movement. The drum is mounted to move in rotation about a first axis of rotation perpendicular to said plane of movement.

[0013] In an advantageous development, the drum is mounted to be movable in rotation around a rotation shaft fixedly mounted to the body.

[0014] Preferably, the tether comprises a spring having a first end fixed to the body and a second end fixed to the reel to oppose rotation of the drum.

[0015] Preferably, the lanyard comprises a blocker arranged in the handle, the blocker being configured to detect a rotation speed of the drum and to block the rotation of the drum when the detected unwinding speed of the wire element is greater than a threshold speed, the blocker bearing on the body to block the rotation of the drum.

[0016] According to one embodiment, the winder comprises a rotatably mounted drum and a rotating wheel operatively linked to rotate together in the cavity, the wire element being fixed to the drum and the spring having the second end fixed to the rotating wheel, the drum and the rotating wheel being arranged one behind the other between the hook portion and the exit slot of the wire element.

[0017] Preferably, the finger is movable in a plane of movement. The rotary wheel and the drum are each rotatably mounted around axes of rotation which are perpendicular to said plane of movement.

[0018] Advantageously, the rotating wheel and the drum are each toothed and mesh together.

[0019] In a preferred development, the blocker is fixed to the drum.

[0020] In an advantageous development, the finger is movable in a plane of placement. The handle has a width greater than a thickness, the width being measured in the plane of movement perpendicular to an axis of insertion / extraction of an element in the hook, the thickness being measured perpendicular to the plane of movement.

[0021] Advantageously, the finger is movable in a plane of movement. The body has a first flange and a second flange mounted opposite each other perpendicular to the plane of movement, the drum being arranged between the first flange and the second flange.

[0022] Preferably, a control is fixed to the body and mounted to move between a locking position and an unlocking position, in the locking position, the control prohibiting movement of the finger from the closed position to the open position, in the unlocking position, the control authorizing movement of the finger from the closed position to the open position.

[0023] Preferably, the finger is movable in a movement plane. The control projects from the body along the movement plane.

[0024] Preferably, the control is mounted to pivot about a pivot axis perpendicular to the plane of movement.

[0025] The invention also relates to a fall arrest lanyard which is easy to use while being capable of reducing the fatigue of a user.

[0026] This result tends to be achieved by means of a fall arrest lanyard according to one of the following: any of the preceding configurations in which a second end of the wire element is attached to an energy absorber, for example a seam or binding thread rupture energy absorber, the energy absorber being intended to be attached to a roping harness.

[0027] The invention also relates to a roping harness which is easy to use while being able to reduce the fatigue of a user.

[0028] This result is tended to be achieved by means of a rope harness comprising a fall arrest lanyard according to the preceding configuration, the fall arrest lanyard being fixed to an abdominal suspension point, to a sternal suspension point or to a dorsal suspension point. [0036] Figures 1 to 6 illustrate a lanyard 1 comprising a connector 2 and a wire element 3 having a first end 3a fixed to a body 4 of the connector 2 and a second end 3b mounted to move relative to the connector 2. The lanyard 1 is preferably intended to form all or part of a fall arrest lanyard. The lanyard 1 is sized to support the weight of a user of 100 kg or more and more preferably to support a static force at least equal to 1000 N.

[0037] The connector 2 comprises a body 4 which defines a handle portion 4b extended by a hook portion 4a. The handle portion 4b may also be called a handle and the hook portion 4a may also be called a hook. The hook portion 4a defines an opening for the insertion of an anchor point into the body 4. The opening is for example a slot. The body 4 may have the shape of a "?" and the hook 4a is intended to hook into an anchor point. The shape of the body 4 may be identical or substantially identical to other connectors intended to be attached to an anchor point. The body 4 also defines a handle 4b intended for gripping the connector 2.

[0038] The connector 2 has a finger 5 fixed to the body 4 and mounted to move between a closed position closing the opening to define a ring with the body 4 and an open position intended to allow insertion / extraction of an element through the opening. The opening is for example the distance between an end 4c of the body 4 intended to receive the movable end of the finger 5 and the area of the body 4 which is opposite with the shortest distance which defines a maximum size of the anchoring point. The connector 2 functions like a carabiner with a movable finger which opens or closes the opening. In the closed position, the finger 5 and the body 4 delimit a closed ring which is intended to receive the anchoring point. The finger 5 has a first end 5a which is fixed to the body 2 and it has a second end 5b which is mounted to move relative to an end 4c of the body 4 so as to open or close the opening. In the closed position, it is advantageous for the second end 5b of the finger 5 to rest on the termination of the body 4 in order to increase the mechanical strength in the closed position. In the embodiments illustrated in Figures 1 to 6, the finger 5 is mounted to pivot, but another mode of movement is possible, for example a retractable finger which enters the body 4. However, it is preferable for the finger 5 to move only in a movement plane which is a section plane where the body 4 defines the hook portion 4a.

[0039] Preferably, the connector 2 is provided with a control 6 fixed to the body 4 and mounted to move between a locking position and an unlocking position, in the locking position. The control 6 is separate from the finger 5. In the locking position, the control 6 prevents movement of the finger 5 from the closed position to the open position, in the unlocking position, the control 6 allows movement of the finger 5 from the closed position to the open position. The control 6 requires two separate and consecutive actions to be performed to open the finger 5. First, a force is applied to the control 6 to switch the control 6 from the locking position to the unlocking position. Then a force is applied to the finger 5 to move it from the closed position to the open position. A connector provided with a control and a finger is known per se.

[0040] In order to provide improved ergonomics, the connector 2 comprises a winder 7. The winder 7 is configured to wind or unwind the wire element 3 and modify the length of the wire element which is projecting 3 out of the connector 2. The wire element 3 has a first end 3a fixed to a drum 8 of the reel 7 and a second end 3b which is movable relative to the drum 8. The reel 7 is fixedly mounted to the body 4 for better operation. The reel 7 is mounted immobile relative to the body 4, that is to say that outside of the winding and unwinding phases, the reel 7 does not move. The reel 7 rotating on it, its position is fixed inside the body 4.

[0041] Preferably, the handle 4b is hollow and the drum 8 is fixed to the body 4. The drum 8 is installed in the handle 4b. When gripping the handle 4b to move the connector 2, the reel 7 does not represent a hindrance and it does not hinder the actuation of the finger 5. This configuration makes it possible to have an operation of the connector 2 which is identical to the operation of the connectors of the prior art. The installation of the reel 7 with the connector 2 has the effect of increasing the weight of the connector 2. However, when the connector 2 is fixed to an anchor point, the weight of the reel 7 is supported by the anchor point which makes it possible to relieve the user.

[0042] The first end 3a of the wire element 3 is fixed to the drum 8 to wind or unwind the wire element 3 and form a wire element 3 of variable length. The second end 3b is intended to be fixed directly or indirectly to a rope harness. As the user moves relative to his anchor point, the effective length of the wire element 3 is adjusted by the drum 8, which makes it possible to adjust the length of the wire element 3 as best as possible and to detect a fall of the user more quickly by detecting more quickly a rapid change in the rotation speed of the drum 8.

[0043] The weight of the drum 8 and of the non-active portion of the wire element 3 are applied to the connector 2 which is intended to be fixed to the anchoring point. When the connector 2 is fixed to the anchoring point, the user does not bear the weight of the drum 8 and of a portion of the wire element 3, which allows him to have a lower mass to move than in the configuration of the prior art.

[0044] The body 4 defines a handle 4b which is intended to accept a one-handed grip. The section of the handle 4b in its width and in its thickness is therefore adapted to the size of a hand. The handle 4b extends from the hook portion 4a in a direction which corresponds to an extraction of an element from the hook 4a passing through the opening. Preferably, the handle 4b extends from the first end 5a of the finger 5 to the end of the body 4 opposite the hook portion 4b when the finger 5 is in the closed position.

[0045] The handle 4b and the hook portion 4a are mounted immobile relative to each other. This makes it easier to manipulate the hook 4a by means of the handle 4b.

[0046] The connector 2 has a large section opening in order to facilitate attachment and separation with the multiple anchor points that the user can choose throughout his working period. For example, the opening has a width that is greater than or equal to the width of the handle 4b.

[0047] Preferably, the first end 3a of the wire element 3 is inseparable from the connector 2.

[0048] In a particular embodiment illustrated in the various figures, the finger 5 is mounted to be mobile in a plane of movement, for example the finger 5 pivots or translates in a plane, and the drum 8 is mounted to be mobile in rotation about a first axis of rotation 9 perpendicular to this plane of movement. This assembly makes it possible to have a drum 8 whose diameter represents substantially the width of the handle and which is compatible with a grip by an adult hand while being able to use a wire element 3 which is a strap. In other words, this assembly makes it possible to limit the diameter of the drum 8 which makes it possible to maintain an acceptable width for a handle 4b. It is advantageous to use a wire element 3 which is a strap which makes it possible to adapt the width of the strap with the thickness of the drum 8.

[0049] Advantageously, the drum 8 is mounted to be mobile in rotation around a rotation shaft 9 fixedly mounted to the body 4. This embodiment makes it possible to improve the compactness of the handle 4b. The width of the strap is less than the width of the cavity

[0050] Preferably, the connector 2 comprises a spring 10 having a first end fixed to the body 4 and a second end fixed to the winder 7 to oppose a rotation of the drum 8. This embodiment is more advantageous for providing a controlled force of the spring 10. In the example illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, the spring 10 is fixed to a rotation shaft 11 which is not circular. Another configuration is possible. The spring 10 is a torsion spring which bears on the rotation shaft 11. The spring 10 applies a force intended to oppose an unwinding of the wire element 3 and which winds the wire element 3 when the wire element 3 is not stressed.

[0051] In an advantageous embodiment which makes it possible to limit the thickness and / or the width of the handle 4b, the reel 7 comprises a rotating drum 8 and a rotating wheel 12 which are operatively linked to rotate together in the cavity delimited by the handle 4b. The wire element 3 is fixed to the rotating drum 8 and the spring 10 has the second end fixed to the rotating wheel 12. The rotating drum 8 and the rotating wheel 12 are arranged one behind the other between the hook portion 4b and the exit slot of the wire element 3. A force applied to the wire element 3 to unwind the wire element rotates the drum 8 and rotates the rotating wheel 12. In the absence of stress on the wire element 3, the spring 10 rotates the wheel rotating wheel 12 which rotates the drum 8 to wind the wire element 3. The rotating wheel 12 is traversed and rotates around the rotating shaft 11.

[0052] The rotating wheel 12 and the rotating drum 8 represent two distinct functions of the winder 7. The drum 8 stores the wire element 3 while the rotating wheel 12 manages the winding force of the wire element 3 in the absence of stress and unwinding. By dissociating these two functions on two rotating elements, it becomes possible to reduce the size in the direction represented by the axis of rotation 9, that is to say in the direction of the thickness. In the devices of the prior art, the two functions are installed around the same rotation shaft one behind the other along the axis of rotation, which implies the formation of a thicker winder, which complicates its grip with one hand.

[0053] Particularly advantageously, when the finger 5 is movable in a plane of movement, the rotating wheel 12 and the rotating drum 8 are each rotatably mounted about axes of rotation which are parallel to a perpendicular to said plane of movement. This configuration allows a good adaptation between the shape of the handle 4b and the actuation of the finger 5, and more particularly in the configuration illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 6. In the illustrated embodiments, the finger 5 is pivotally mounted about the pivot shaft 13. It is advantageous for the reel 7 to be arranged near the pivot shaft so as to have a compact handle which allows the connector to be held with one hand and to be able to actuate the finger 5 to open the connector 2.

[0054] Preferably, the rotating wheel 12 and the rotating drum 8 are respectively a toothed wheel and a toothed drum meshed together. The use of two toothed elements allows for an efficient coupling between the rotating wheel 12 and the rotating drum 8. In the illustrated embodiments, the teeth 14 are shaped to allow a gearing between the drum 8 and the rotating wheel 12. However, another type of coupling is possible, for example by a belt or a chain. The teeth 14 may have a different shape and they may be replaced by another system.

[0055] In a particular embodiment, the rotating drum 8 has a movable blocker 15 configured to detect a rotational speed of the drum 8 and block the rotation of the drum 8 when the detected speed reaches a threshold speed for unwinding the wire element 3. The blocker 15 has at least one arm 16 which moves under the effect of a centrifugal force, for example which moves in a pivoting manner. The arm 16 is associated with an additional spring which opposes the centrifugal force. When the rotational speed approaches the threshold speed, the centripetal force applied by the additional spring is compensated by the centrifugal force. When the threshold speed is reached, the arm 16 moves away and comes into contact with an obstacle which blocks the rotation of the drum 8. The arm 16 blocks the rotation of the drum 8. The blocker 15 is configured to block the rotation of the drum 8 in the direction of unwinding of the wire element 3. The threshold speed is chosen so as to represent the speed of a fall of the user. The blocking of the drum 8 makes it possible to prevent the user from reaching too high a speed and the length of the wire element 3 from being too great.

[0056] In a particularly advantageous manner, the blocker 15 is arranged in the handle 4b and the blocker 15 bears on the body 4 in a blocking position blocking the rotation of the drum 8 corresponding to an unwinding of the wire element 3. Preferably, the blocker 15 bears on the body 4 to block the rotation of the drum 8. More preferably, the blocker 13 bears inside the handle 4b so as to have an operation which is not modified by the user's grip on the handle 4b. The reel 7 is completely integrated into the handle 4b which facilitates the use of the connector 2.

[0057] It is advantageous for the control 6 to be pivotally mounted about a pivot shaft 16 which is parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum 8. The control 6 may be provided with an obstacle 17 mounted to move relative to the body 4. The obstacle 17 may be a pin and it forms an obstacle which prevents the finger 5 from leaving the closed position when the control 6 is in the locking position. In the unlocking position of the control 6, the obstacle 17 does not oppose the movement of the finger 5.

[0058] This lanyard configuration is particularly advantageous for forming a fall arrest lanyard as illustrated in [Fig.l]. The second end 3b of the wire element 3 is intended to be fixed to an energy absorber 18. The energy absorber 18 is configured to be fixed on the one hand to the wire element 3 and to be fixed on the other hand to a roping harness. The energy absorber is arranged between the roping harness and the lanyard so that in the event of a fall, the energy absorber is subjected to a force and it absorbs part of the energy of the fall to limit the stress on the roping harness. Advantageously, two lanyards 1 or at least two lanyards 1 are fixed to the energy absorber 18.

[0059] Preferably, the energy absorber has fusible links, for example seams between two layers or a link between two layers. The first layer can be connected to the rope harness while the second layer is connected to the wire element. The force of the fall tends to separate the two layers, which has the effect of stressing the fusible links, which deform until they break. The deformation of the links and then their breaking make it possible to absorb at least part of the energy of the fall. The operation of the energy absorber is known per se.

[0060] During a fall, the connector 2 is attached to an anchor point. It is therefore fixed or substantially fixed. The fall applies a force to the wire element 3 which causes the wire element 3 to unwind from the drum 8. The rotation speed of the drum 8 increases until it reaches the threshold speed. Once the threshold speed is reached, it is advantageous for the blocker 15 to block the drum 8. Blocking the drum 8 prevents the drum from reaching higher speeds representative of a higher fall speed and therefore a greater fall energy to be dissipated.

[0061] Once the drum 8 is blocked, the fall force is applied to the energy absorber 18 arranged between the rope harness and the wire element 3.

[0062] The energy absorber 18 may be attached to the roping harness at an umbilical suspension point, a sternal suspension point, a dorsal suspension point, or any other suspension point suitable for supporting a fall.

[0063] Preferably, the body 4 defines a cavity receiving the winder 7 and the body 4 prohibits access to the winder. The body 4 defines an exit slot for the wire element which is the only access to the winder 7.

[0064] In an advantageous embodiment, the body 4 has two flanges 19 fixed to each other to form all or part of the body 4. Preferably, the two flanges 19 are mounted opposite each other along the axis of rotation of the drum 8. The two flanges 19 can be connected by a spacer 20 which delimits the cavity intended to receive the winder 7.

[0065] The unwinding and winding of the reel are independent of the state of the finger. 5.
