[0003] Technology field

[0004] The present invention relates to an electrode current collector, an electrode assembly including the electrode current collector, and a method for manufacturing the electrode current collector.

[0005] Secondary batteries, unlike primary batteries, are rechargeable and have the potential for miniaturization and large capacity, leading to significant research and development in recent years. With the increasing technological development and demand for electric vehicles, energy storage systems (ESS), and mobile devices, the demand for secondary batteries as an energy source is rapidly increasing. However, the safety of secondary batteries has not kept pace with technological advancements. To address this, methods include creating an electrical short to drain energy before secondary batteries exhibit abnormal behavior, or shorting electrical connections to improve safety.

[0006] Secondary batteries are classified into coin-shaped batteries, cylindrical batteries, square batteries, and pouch-shaped batteries, depending on the shape of the battery case. In secondary batteries, the electrode assembly mounted inside the battery case is a rechargeable power generation device composed of a laminated structure of electrodes and a separator.

[0007] Electrode assemblies can be roughly classified into a jelly-roll type in which a separator is interposed between sheet-shaped positive and negative electrodes on which an active material is applied to a current collector, a stack type in which a plurality of positive and negative electrodes are sequentially stacked with a separator interposed between them, and a stack / folding type in which stacked unit cells are wound with a long separator film.

[0008] One aspect of the present invention is to provide an electrode current collector having improved weldability, an electrode assembly including the electrode current collector, and a method for manufacturing the electrode current collector.

[0009] An electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention is an electrode current collector including an electrode tab extending from an end thereof, and includes a polymer layer and a first metal layer and a second metal layer laminated on both sides of the polymer layer, and in the electrode tab, the first metal layer may be provided with a metal rib extending to the polymer layer.

[0010] In addition, an electrode assembly according to an embodiment of the present invention is an electrode assembly in which electrodes and separators are alternately laminated, wherein the electrode includes an electrode current collector including an electrode tab extending from an end thereof, and the electrode current collector includes a polymer layer and a first metal layer and a second metal layer laminated on both sides of the polymer layer in a lamination direction, and a metal rib extending from the electrode tab to the first metal layer and the polymer layer may be provided.

[0011] In addition, a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention may include a rib forming process for forming a metal rib extending in a lamination direction on a first metal layer; a polymer lamination process for laminating a polymer layer on the first metal layer after the rib forming process; a second metal layer lamination process for laminating a second metal layer on the polymer layer after the polymer lamination process to form a laminate; and a tab forming process for forming an electrode tab by notching an end portion of the laminate.

[0012] According to the present invention, in an electrode current collector in which metal layers are laminated on both sides of a polymer layer, a metal layer positioned at a portion forming an electrode tab is provided with a metal rib extending toward the polymer layer, thereby significantly improving weldability. In addition, this significantly improves the welding between the electrode tabs of the electrode current collector and the weldability between the electrode tabs and the electrode lead.

[0030] Electrode current collector according to the embodiment

[0031]

[0032] FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing an electrode collector according to an embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view showing an electrode collector according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0033] Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, an electrode current collector (110) according to an embodiment of the present invention is an electrode current collector (110) including an electrode tab (111) extending to an end, and includes a polymer layer (112) and a first metal layer (114) and a second metal layer (113) laminated on both sides of the polymer layer (112), and in the electrode tab (111), the first metal layer (114) is provided with a metal rib (115) extending to the polymer layer (112).

[0034]

[0035] In more detail, the electrode current collector (110) includes an electrode tab (111) extending from an end. That is, the electrode tab (111) may be formed by notching the end of the electrode current collector (110).

[0036] In addition, the electrode current collector (110) includes a polymer layer (112) and a first metal layer (114) and a second metal layer (113) laminated on both sides of the polymer layer (112) in the lamination direction (D). Here, the polymer layer (112) is a layer including a polymer material, and the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) are layers including a metal material. Therefore, the electrode current collector (110) is provided in a form in which the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) are laminated on both sides of the polymer layer (112), thereby preventing a fire caused by excessive current density that occurs when the electrode current collector is made only of a metal material. In addition, the electrode current collector (110) can form a first metal layer (114) and a second metal layer (113) on both sides, so that when breaking occurs, the risk of a short due to a metal burr or the like can be reduced.

[0037] Additionally, for example, the thickness (t3) of the polymer layer (112) may be 2 to 14 um.

[0038] And, for example, the thickness (t1, t2) of the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) may be 0.2 to 3 um. Here, specifically, for example, the thickness (t1, t2) of the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) may be 0.2 to 2 um.

[0039] Accordingly, the thicknesses (t1, t2) of the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) can be formed to be equal to or greater than the lower limit of 0.2 μm, thereby lowering the electrical resistivity. Accordingly, the required characteristic of the current collector foil, that is, its function as an electrical connection, can be unrestricted. In other words, its function as a battery can be maintained without being impaired.

[0040] Meanwhile, the thicknesses (t1, t2) of the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) are formed to be less than the upper limit of 2 μm, so that the energy density can be high. In addition, the negative effect on stability enhancement through electrical insulation during a nail test, which is a disadvantage of conventional metal foil, can be significantly reduced. Specifically, the electrode current collector (110) is provided in a form in which the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) are laminated on both sides of the polymer layer (112), so that the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) can collapse due to shrinkage of the polymer layer during the nail test, thereby enhancing safety through electrical insulation. However, if the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) are too thick, the polymer layer (112) may not be able to perform its stability enhancement function, which may deteriorate safety. Accordingly, the thicknesses (t1, t2) of the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) are formed to be less than or equal to the upper limit of 2 μm, so that the polymer layer (112) including the polymer material can exhibit a stability-enhancing function. Here, the nail test is to test stability by penetrating with a nail.

[0041] Meanwhile, the thickness (t1) of the first metal layer (114) may be, for example, the same as the thickness (t2) of the second metal layer (113).

[0042] Additionally, the thickness (t1) of the first metal layer (114) may be thicker than the thickness (t2) of the second metal layer (113), for example. Accordingly, the manufacturing of the electrode current collector (110) may be facilitated.

[0043]

[0044] A metal rib (115) may be provided to extend from the electrode tab to the polymer layer (112) in the first metal layer (114).

[0045] Additionally, the metal rib (115) may protrude from the inner surface of the first metal layer (114) to the polymer layer (112) and may be formed along the inner surface of the first metal layer (114).

[0046] Additionally, the metal rib (115) may include the same material as the material of the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113).

[0047]

[0048] FIG. 3 is a perspective view showing a main part of an example of an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 4 is a perspective view showing a main part of another example of an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0049] Referring to FIG. 3, the metal ribs (115) may be formed in the shape of a rectangular wall, for example, and may be provided in multiple numbers at regular intervals.

[0050] Referring to FIG. 4, the metal rib (115') may be provided in the form of multiple cylinders as another example.

[0051]

[0052] Meanwhile, referring to FIG. 2, as a first example of an electrode current collector (110), an end of a metal rib (115) may be spaced apart from a second metal layer (113) by a certain distance.

[0053] Accordingly, the end of the metal rib (115) is spaced apart from the second metal layer (113) by a certain distance, so that the first metal layer (114) and the second metal layer (113) are not connected, and thus the stability effect of the metallized electrode current collector (110) in which metal layers are laminated on both sides of the polymer layer (112) can be maintained.

[0054] In addition, the distance between the end of the metal rib (115) and the second metal layer (113) can be 2 to 8 μm. Accordingly, the distance (t0) between the end of the metal rib (115) and the second metal layer (113) can be formed to be equal to or greater than the lower limit of 2 μm, thereby significantly improving thermal stability. Meanwhile, the distance (t0) between the end of the metal rib (115) and the second metal layer (113) can be formed to be equal to or less than the upper limit of 8 μm, thereby significantly facilitating welding.

[0055]

[0056] Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view showing a second example of an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0057] In addition, referring to Fig. 5, in the second example of the electrode current collector (210), the end of the metal rib (115) can be in contact with the second metal layer (113). Accordingly, the electrical resistivity can be reduced.

[0058]

[0059] Meanwhile, referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the electrode current collector (110) may include a body (116) on the outer surface of which an electrode active material is coated, and an electrode tab (111) extending from the body (116). At this time, a metal rib (115) may be further provided on the body (116). That is, the metal rib (115) may be provided on the first metal layer (114) located on the body (116) and the electrode tab (111) of the electrode current collector (110) so as to extend to the polymer layer (112).

[0060]

[0061] Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the electrode current collector (110) according to the embodiment of the present invention configured as described above is provided with a metal rib (115) extending toward the polymer layer (112) on the metal layer located at the portion where the electrode tab (111) is formed in the electrode current collector (110) in which metal layers are laminated on both sides of the polymer layer (112), thereby significantly improving weldability. That is, when the electrode tabs (111) respectively provided on a plurality of electrode current collectors (110) are mutually welded and the electrode tabs (111) and the electrode leads are welded, the metal rib (115) extends toward the polymer layer (112) at the welding portion, so that the thickness of the polymer layer (112) located at the welding portion is formed thinly, and the gap between the first and second metal layers (114, 113) is narrowed, thereby significantly improving the welding effect. Ultimately, when welding using a laser or ultrasonic wave, it is possible to prevent the weldability from being reduced due to the laser or ultrasonic wave not passing through the polymer layer (112).

[0062]

[0064]

[0065] Hereinafter, an electrode assembly according to an embodiment of the invention will be described.

[0072] Here, the electrode (130) may include an electrode current collector (110) and an electrode active material (120) coated on one or both sides of the electrode current collector (110). [0091]

[0092] Method for manufacturing electrode current collector according to an embodiment

[0093]

[0094] Hereinafter, a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described.

[0095] FIG. 9 is a cross-sectional view showing a rib formation process in a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 10 is a cross-sectional view showing a polymer lamination process in a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 11 is a cross-sectional view showing a second metal layer lamination process in a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0096] Referring to FIGS. 9 to 11, a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention is a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector, which includes a rib forming process for forming a metal rib (115) extending in a lamination direction (D) in a first metal layer (114), a polymer lamination process for laminating a polymer layer (112) on the first metal layer (114) after the rib forming process, a second metal layer lamination process for laminating a second metal layer (113) on the polymer layer (112) after the polymer lamination process to form a laminate (S), and a tab forming process for forming an electrode tab (111) by notching an end portion of the laminate (S).

[0097] The method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector for manufacturing an electrode current collector included in an electrode assembly according to an embodiment of the present invention and an electrode current collector according to the above-described embodiment of the present invention.

[0098] Accordingly, in the embodiment of the electrode collector manufacturing method according to the embodiment of the present invention, overlapping contents with the embodiments of the present invention described above are omitted or briefly described, and differences are described.

[0099]

[0100] Fig. 12 is a perspective view illustrating an example of a rib formation process and a polymer lamination process in a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 13 is a perspective view illustrating another example of a rib formation process and a polymer lamination process in a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0101] In more detail, referring to FIGS. 9, 12, and 13, the rib forming process forms a metal rib (115) extending in the lamination direction (D) in the first metal layer (114).

[0102] In addition, the rib forming process can form a metal rib (115) by etching one surface of the first metal layer (114). At this time, the rib forming process can form a metal rib (115) by stacking a mask having a pattern hole formed on one surface of the first metal layer (114), and then pouring an etching solution on top of the mask so that the etching solution enters the part where the pattern hole is formed, etching one surface of the first metal layer (114) to form a metal rib (115) having a cross-section corresponding to the pattern hole formed in the mask.

[0103] In addition, the rib forming process can form the metal ribs (115, 115') in the form of multiple walls or cylinders.

[0104] As an example, the rib formation process can form a metal rib (115) in an area where an electrode tab (111) is formed on one side of the first metal layer (114).

[0105] As another example, the rib formation process can form a metal rib (115) on the entire area of one side of the first metal layer (114).

[0106]

[0107] Referring to Fig. 10, the polymer lamination process laminates a polymer layer (112) on the first metal layer (114) after the rib formation process.

[0108] Referring to FIG. 2 and FIG. 10, the polymer lamination process can form a polymer layer (112) by pouring a polymer on one side of the first metal layer (114) so that the thickness is thicker than the height (h1) in the lamination direction (D) of the metal rib (115), as a first example.

[0109] Referring to FIG. 5, the polymer lamination process can form a polymer layer (112) by pouring a polymer onto one surface of the first metal layer (114) so as to have a thickness corresponding to the height in the lamination direction (D) of the metal rib (115), as a second example. That is, the polymer lamination process can form the polymer layer (112) so that the thickness (t4) is the same as the height in the lamination direction (D) of the metal rib (115).

[0110]

[0111] Fig. 14 is a perspective view showing a second metal layer lamination process in a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0112] Referring to FIGS. 11 and 14, the second metal layer lamination process forms a laminate (S) by laminating a second metal layer (113) on a polymer layer (112) after the polymer lamination process.

[0113] In addition, the second metal layer lamination process can deposit metal on one surface of the polymer layer (112) to laminate the second metal layer (113). Here, the second metal layer lamination process can deposit metal on one surface of the polymer layer (112) through a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) deposition method.

[0114]

[0115] Figure 15 is a perspective view showing a tab forming process in a method for manufacturing an electrode current collector according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0116] Referring to Fig. 15, the tab forming process can form an electrode tab (111) by notching the end portion of the laminate (S).

[0117] That is, the tab forming process can form an electrode tab (111) in a protruding shape by cutting one side of a laminate (S) in which a first metal layer (114) and a second metal layer (113) are laminated on both sides of a polymer layer (112).

[0118] Additionally, the tab forming process can be performed by notching the electrode tab (111) in the laminate (S) using a punch die or laser.

[0119]

[0120] While the present invention has been described in detail through specific examples, these are intended to illustrate the invention in detail and are not intended to be limiting.
