Description
METHOD FOR HANDLING ERROR MESSAGES AND A MACHINE FOR MINING OR CONSTRUCTION OPERATIVE FOR PERFORMING THE METHODTechnical field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a method performed by a processing unit of a machine for mining or construction, for handling error messages arising at any of multiple systems of the machine. The present disclosure further relates to a machine for mining or construction, which is operative for performing the method. Background
[0002] Within for example mining industry, a mining machine, like a drill rig or any other type of construction or mining machine, combines multiple systems to inform the operator of the machine status, like operational status of different functions as well as information if any errors occur in any of the systems connected to the machine. The multiple systems may include for example the progress of the machine (i.e. the driving), the drill rig, the boom / booms, feeder etc. Since there is a lot of information to handle for the operator and that the mining environment is dangerous, it is desirable to avoid unnecessary distractions of the operator and keep a maintained and high safety for the operator. Further, it is desirable to simplify the solving of errors that may occur at the mining or construction machine, which errors may be solved by the system, the operator or a service technician or the like. Currently, accessing and understanding the output from various system components can be challenging. For instance, at known construction and mining machines, there normally are separate logging tools for tracing errors (faults) in the separate systems of the multiple systems, which is a complex task and requires experience and significant time to master and operate. It's not unusual for the operator (or service technician) to use specialized diagnostic tools, not seldom one for each system, in the event of a malfunction in any of the systems, and the specialized diagnostic tools often are complex and demands great experience. Thus, there is a need of minimizing distraction of the operator and simplify the solving of errors which may occur in the systems of a mining and / or constructions machine.Summary
[0003] It is an object of the disclosure to address at least some of the problems and issues outlined above. One object of the present disclosure is to provide a method for handling error messages arising at any of multiple systems of the mining or construction machine.
[0004] According to one aspect, a method performed by a processing unit of a control system of a machine for mining or construction, for handling error messages, is disclosed. The error messages to be handled arises at any of multiple systems of the machine. The multiple systems of the machine may for example be controller area network components (CAN components) or the like. The method comprises:- obtaining a plurality of error messages from at least one of the multiple systems of the machine,- evaluating each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority,- providing the evaluated error messages different priorities in accordance with the evaluation,- displaying, on a display, the one or more error messages with the highest priority. The machine may be operated remotely or physically by an operator, and the error messages may be displayed on a display in a remote location (like a control room) and / or on a display in the mining or constructions machine, depending on whether the machine is remotely controlled or controlled by an operator at the machine. The providing the evaluated error messages different priorities and / or the displaying of the error messages must not be based only on for example severeness but could instead be prioritized and / or displayed according to if one fault (for example a minor fault) causing a lot of secondary faults (which may be more severe than the first fault). The fault causing the secondary faults and thereby for example more severe error messages, may be prioritized and / or displayed such that the error must be handled first.
[0005] By such a method, it is possible to minimize distraction of an operator of the mining or constructions machine, and a simplified and more rapid solving of errors occurred in the different systems of the machine are achieved. Since thenumber of different multiple systems of the mining or construction machine now is handled into one system according to the method, and the eventual error messages of the system / systems now is gathered into one system, a safer working environment of the operator is achieved as well as a more effective solving of errors occurring in any or several systems of the machine. Since the error messages also are prioritized regarding relevance, severity, first fault (of a number of depending faults) etc. the operator, the system itself or a service technician may focus on the most important faults to solve, and in a correct order. All secondary errors or minor errors are preferably not displayed, to minimize distractions and to minimize the time for scrolling (or the like) among all errors, which may occur from different systems of the multiple systems of the machine. A safer and more rapid error solving is thereby achieved, which is not known in market at this moment.
[0006] According to a disclosure, the method further comprises:- displaying, on the display, at least one action for handling the error related to the displayed error message. This is a further step for presenting, on the display, an action to solve the presented error or at least one of the errors displayed (if many) and the action may be for example how to solve the error with the highest priority or another error in a (preferably short) list of errors, which may be an alternative to solve first. If an operator physically operates the machine, for example from an operator’s cabin, a display in the cabin presents on or more errors messages and linked to the error message, is a proposal of an action to solve the problem. Independently of from which of the multiple systems of the machine the error occurs, the displayed action leads to the correct system of the machine, without the operator being confused or has to focus on which system to look into, and how to solve it, but instead can focus on the operation of the machine and a simple way of solving the malfunction. If the machine is operated remotely, the display may be located at the remote location, in which the operator is situated. If a service technician in appointed to solve the one (or more) problems related to the error message / messages, it is easy and very visual to quickly locate the most important faults to solve, and how to solve them, without look deep into the different systems and how to solve such problems within that system. For example, the presentedaction may be to open the correct system and directly be directed to that part where the error occurs. In that way, the technician may rapidly locate the problem and further actions may also follow after the first displayed.
[0007] According to a disclosure, the method further comprises:- triggering performance of the at least one action. After the display of the at least one action for handling the error related to the displayed error message, the performance of the action is triggered, for example by pressing / clicking on the displayed action, wherein one or more actions take place to solve the problem. Another option may be that a control system handles the triggering of the action directly, after a period of time or after some indication or trigger from an operator. The action may be an actual action or for example a presentation of a help section or the like, in a manual, online, in a system library etc.
[0008] According to a disclosure, after triggering performance of the at least one action, the method further comprises:- repeating the steps of displaying one or more error messages, displaying at least one action and triggering performance of the at least one action, for the next error message of the evaluated and prioritized errors messages. This step may be looped to solve all faults causing error messages of the multiple systems of the mining or constructions machine.
[0009] According to a disclosure, the error messages are error codes, wherein each error code has a different implication and the method further comprising, before displaying, on the display, the one or more error messages with the highest priority:- translating the error code of each of the one or more messages into a desired format. The translated error code may be presented on the display in any desired format which for example is text, symbol / symbols, color / colors etc., to make it quick and easy for the operator to understand and solve (and / or track) the fault causing the error message.
[0010] According to a disclosure, the evaluating each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority, comprises evaluating if the plurality of errorsmessages concerns dependent errors, dependent on one error, wherein the one error causing the dependent errors is provided a higher priority compared to dependent errors, wherein the displaying, on a display, displays at least the one error causing the dependent errors. Such a method provides a quicker and more direct solving of the actual problem which causes other problem, instead as in prior art solutions, where for example the operator likewise may approach a problem which is not the “root” to the problem. By such a method, a great improvement is achieved.
[0011] According to a disclosure, the evaluating each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority comprises evaluating a time of each of the plurality of error messages, wherein the error messages are sorted by time, and the first timed error message of the plurality of error messages is provided a higher priority compared later timed errors, wherein the displaying of error messages displays only the first timed error message of the plurality of error messages. This means that since each error message occurs at a certain time, wherein the error messages, if a plurality of errors occurs, gives a timeline of the error messages. Since errors sometimes are caused by a previous error, it is likely that errors which occurs later, not necessarily need to be handled, since later errors may be solved by solving an earlier error. This is an alternative sorting possibility, to sort by time, wherein preferably only the first error message is the one displayed.
[0012] According to a disclosure, the evaluating each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority comprises evaluating if the plurality of errors messages occurs within a predetermined time window, wherein the first timed error message within the time window is provided a higher priority compared later timed errors within the time window, wherein the displaying of error messages displays only the first timed error message within the time window of the plurality of error messages. This sorting alternative may be used as an alternative when sorting by time, wherein a time window is specified, for example a predetermined number of seconds or minutes. There is a higher likeliness that dependent errors occur shortly after an error to which they depend, and by defining a time window (for example based on historical data), one may conclude that errors occurringshortly thereafter are dependent errors, wherein it may only be necessary to display the first error message within the time window. By taking care of the first error message within the time window, it is high probability that errors that occurred shortly after this are solved, by solving the first error.
[0013] One disclosure may be to sort by time within errors given the same priority. For example, the evaluating each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority comprises evaluating if the plurality of errors messages has the same priority, wherein the first timed error message of the plurality of error messages with the same priority is provided a higher priority compared later timed errors, wherein the displaying of error messages displays only the first timed error message of the plurality of error messages which first was given the same priority.
[0014] According to a disclosure, after the providing of the evaluated error messages different priorities, the method further comprises:- filtering the plurality of error messages, and- classifying the filtered error messages into at least two priority classes, wherein a first class is an error class related to actual errors in any of the multiple systems, and a second class is an operating class related to operating issues / errors.Actual errors are normally more severe compared to operating issues (operating errors), wherein the latter may be of information type, like for example slightly higher oil temperature, which is above normal but not critical, but a corresponding actual error may be too high oil temperature, where a motor or the like may be damaged, wherein for example the machine is stopped. Again, comparing for example with warning systems of a car, the operating issue message class (of information type, like for example the level of washer fluid is low) may have yellow indication message / symbol, while for example a too low oil level, which might cause damage of the motor, is of the error message class, and may have a red indication message / symbol. The classification may have different priority depending on if only one or both the types are at hand, for the actual situation. For example, if an actual error code (for example red code / symbol) is at hand, this achieves the highest priority, and may be the only / or first / highest to display, while an operating issue messages occurring at the same time is not displayed ordisplayed lower in the list (if several codes). In this way, the most relevant error messages may be chosen to display and handled, which saves time and minimizes distractions of the operator.
[0015] According to a disclosure, the first class has a higher priority than the second class.
[0016] According to a disclosure, the displaying of the error message on the display, comprises displaying an icon on an interface, wherein different error messages have different icons. This enables a graphical interface which is quicker and easier for an operator to see and handle, and which cause less distraction for the operator compared to for example a text message.
[0017] According to a disclosure, the icon comprises a figure related to the displayed error. This to effectively display feature / features related to the fault / error, which is more pedagogic and causes shorter and less distraction of the operator compared to for example a text message.
[0018] According to a disclosure, the icon comprises a color. For example, the color may be red, yellow or green, to visualize grade of severity of the error displayed as an error message on the display.
[0019] According to a disclosure, the displaying of the error message on the display further comprises displaying at least one more error message of the evaluated and prioritized errors messages. For example, the error message with the highest priority may be displayed first or with any other property for showing the importance / priority, like brightness, color, on top or in front of the next error message, flashing etc.
[0020] According to a disclosure, the displaying of the error message on the display further comprises displaying a list of prioritized errors messages presented in prioritized order, from the highest priority to the lowest priority. The operator or the service technician thus may have an overview of a number of errors needed to be handled but is guided by the priority of the error messages in the list.
[0021] According to a disclosure, the at least one action displayed during the displaying comprises opening a diagnostics menu, for detailed information about the presented error messages. The diagnostic menu may be stored into a memory of the machine, in a system to which the machine has access to via any connection protocol or similar (wifi, Bluetooth etc), online, in a cloud computing unit etc.
[0022] According to a disclosure, the obtaining a plurality of error messages from at least one of the multiple systems of the machine, comprises obtaining a plurality of error messages from at least two of the multiple systems. Since a mining or construction machine normally comprises a number of different systems, for example progress system of the machine (i.e. the driving system), drill rig system, boom system, feeder system etc., errors may occur in any of these systems, wherein the method enables to obtain error messages from one or several, preferably all systems of the machine. The method may then be utilized in the same way as described above, by evaluating each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority, providing the evaluated error messages different priorities in accordance with the evaluation and displaying, on a display, the one or more error messages with the highest priority.
[0023] According to one aspect, a machine for mining or construction is disclosed. The machine for mining or construction comprises a control system with a processing circuitry and a memory, wherein said memory contains instructions executable by said processing circuitry, whereby the machine is operative for:- obtaining a plurality of error messages from at least one of multiple systems of the machine,- evaluating each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority,- providing the evaluated error messages different priorities in accordance with the evaluation,- displaying, on a display, the one or more error messages with the highest priority.
[0024] Further possible features and benefits of this solution will become apparent from the detailed description below.Brief description of drawings

[0029] In the following, a method for handling error messages arising at any of multiple systems of the mining or construction machine 10 is described. The method disclosed herein may be realized in many different forms and should not be construed as being limited to the examples set forth herein. Like numbers in the drawings refer to like elements throughout.
[0030] Fig. 1 shows a flow chart of a method for handling error messages arising at any of multiple systems of a machine 10 for mining or construction, according to the invention. The method comprises obtaining 101 a plurality of error messages from at least one of the multiple systems of the machine 10, evaluating 102 each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority, providing 104 the evaluated error messages different priorities in accordance with the evaluation and displaying 106, on a display, the one or more error messages with the highest priority. The obtaining 101 of a plurality of error messages may comprise obtaining 101 a plurality of error messages from at least two of the multiple systems. The displaying 106 of the error message on the display may further comprise displaying 106 at least one more error message of the evaluatedand prioritized errors messages and may further comprise displaying 106 a list of prioritized errors messages presented in prioritized order, from the highest priority to the lowest priority.
[0031] Fig. 2 shows a flow chart of a method for handling error messages arising at any of multiple systems of a machine 10 for mining or construction, according to the invention. The displaying 106 of the error message on the display may further comprise displaying 106 at least one more error message of the evaluated and prioritized errors messages and may further comprise displaying 106 a list of prioritized errors messages presented in prioritized order, from the highest priority to the lowest priority.
[0032] Since machines for construction and mining tasks (like for example a drill rig), combines multiple systems and the systems informs the operator of the machine status, like operational information / status of different functions as well as information if any errors occur in any of the systems connected to the machine, the operator may be exposed for several disturbing information. And if problems with the machine occurs, a lot of error messages may be “produced” and displayed for the operator. Since there is a lot of information to handle for the operator and that the mining environment is dangerous, the method makes it possible to avoid unnecessary distractions of the operator and thereby keep a maintained and high safety for the operator. Further, the method simplifies the solving of errors, which errors may be solved by the system, the operator or a service technician or the like. In prior art machines and systems, the accessing and understanding of the output from various system components is challenging. For instance, at known construction and mining machines, there normally are separate logging tools fortracing errors (faults) in the separate systems, which is a complex task and requires experience and significant time to master and operate. It's further common to use specialized diagnostic tools for each system, in the event of a malfunction in any of the systems, and the specialized diagnostic tools often are complex and demands great experience. The inventive method solves these issues by minimizing distraction of the operator of the machine 10 and by simplifying the solving of errors and solving them in a more rapid way than previously known within the technical field. Thus, a safer working environment of the operator is achieved as well as a more effective solving of errors occurring in any or several systems of the machine 10. Since the error messages also are prioritized regarding relevance, severity, first fault (of a number of depending faults) etc., the operator, the system itself or a service technician may focus on the most important faults to solve, and in a correct order. All secondary errors or minor errors are preferably not displayed, to minimize distractions and to minimize the time for scrolling (or the like) among all errors, which may occur from different systems of the multiple systems of the machine 10.
[0033] The method may further comprise displaying 107, on the display, at least one action A, for handling the error related to the displayed error message. The display may be in a remote location, like a control room, and / or on a display in the mining or constructions machine 10, depending on whether the machine 10 is remotely controlled or controlled by an operator at the machine 10. The action may be for example a presented action how to solve the error with the highest priority or another error if more than one error is presented. A list of prioritized actions A may also be presented, depending on the situation. The at least one action A displayed during the displaying 107 may further comprise opening 111 a diagnostics menu, for detailed information about the presented error messages. For a service technician, this action may be more useful if he / she needs to dig deeper into the error codes, while for an operator, this action may be too detailed, when running the machine. If an operator physically operates the machine, for example from an operator’s cabin, a display in the cabin may present one or more errors messages and the action A, linked to the error message, to solve the problem. Independently of from which of the multiple systems of the machine 10the error occurs, the displayed action A leads to the correct system of the machine 10, without the operator being confused or has to focus on which system to look into, and how to solve it, but instead can focus on the operation of the machine 10 and a simple way of solving the malfunction. If the machine is operated remotely, the display may be located at the remote location, in which the operator is situated. If a service technician in appointed to solve the one (or more) problems related to the error message / messages, it is easy and very visual to quickly locate the most important faults to solve, and how to solve them, without look deep into the different systems and how to solve such problems within that system.. For example, the presented action A may be to open the correct system and directly be directed to that part where the error occurs. In that way, the technician may rapidly locate the problem and further actions may also follow after the first displayed. But if needed, the technician may open a diagnostics menu or the like to go deeper into the problems causing the error messages, as mentioned above.
[0034] After at least one action A is presented, the method further may comprise triggering 108 performance of the at least one action A. The reason why first displaying 107 an action A, before triggering 108 the action A, is to provide a possibility for an operator or technician to perform the action. For a system solving the error automatically, the action 107 and triggering 108 may be automatically performed, like one single step action 107 / triggering 108.
[0035] After triggering performance 108 of the at least one action A, the method may further comprise repeating 110 the steps of displaying 106, displaying 107 and triggering performance 108, for the next error message of the evaluated and prioritized errors messages, if any. This means that the method provides further handling and solving of any further errors presented as error messages on the display, in the same way as for the first (highest) prioritized error message. If the error message / messages is / are in the form of error codes, which is quite common for machine systems, and each error code has a different implication, the method further comprising, before displaying 106, on the display, the one or more error messages with the highest priority, a step of translating 105 the error code of each of the one or more messages into a desired format. This to avoid difficulties inunderstanding the meaning of the error code, which for example may be a numeric code or the like, which is not understandable, without long experience or deep knowledge. When translated the error code in clear text or a symbol, it is easier for an operator to understand the error message, which means less distraction and quicker solving of the problem.
[0036] According to a preferred embodiment, the evaluating 102 of each of the plurality of error messages in accordance with priority comprises evaluating 102 if the plurality of errors messages concern dependent errors dependent on one error, wherein the one error causing the dependent errors is provided 104 a higher priority compared to dependent errors. The following step of the displaying 106, on a display, displays the one error causing the dependent errors. For example can a severe error occur, and thereby, normally should have the highest priority, but if this problem is a dependent error of another malfunction, the one error causing the following error / errors (including any high or low priority errors) gets the highest priority. This saves a lot of time, since solving the most severe problem, referring to the example above, would only solve the problem for a short moment, and then it will occur again, since another problem / error causing following errors.
[0037] An option could also be that the method comprises, after the providing 104 of the evaluated error messages different priorities, filtering 103a the plurality of error messages, and classifying 103b the filtered error messages into at least two priority classes. The priority classes may preferably comprise a first class E, which is an error class E, related to actual errors in any of the multiple systems, and a second class O, which is an operating class O, related to operating issues of less importance. The first class E has a higher priority than the second class O. Actual errors are normally more severe compared to operating issues (operating errors), wherein the latter may be of information type, normally not critical, while an actual error may be an error where a motor, a drill system or the like may be damaged, wherein the machine must be stopped. The classification in class E and O may have different priority depending on if only one or both the types are represented in the actual situation. For example, if an actual error code E is at hand, this achieves the highest priority, and may be the only / or first / highest todisplay, while an operating issue messages 0 occurring at the same time is not displayed or displayed lower in the list (if several codes). In this way, the most relevant error messages may be chosen to display and handled, which saves time and minimizes distractions of the operator.
[0038] According to an embodiment, the displaying 106 of the error message on the display, comprises displaying an icon on an interface, of the display, wherein different error messages have different icons, and each icon may comprise a figure related to the displayed error. Preferably, the message or icon further comprises a color. Comparing for example with warning systems of a car, the operating issue / message class 0, which is as mentioned more of information type, like for example the level of washer fluid of the car is low, may have yellow indication icon or message / symbol, while for example a too low oil level, which might cause damage of the motor, is of the error message class E, and may have a red indication icon or message / symbol.
[0039] Fig. 3 shows a schematic figure of a control system 100 of a machine 10 for mining or construction, for handling error messages arising at any of multiple systems of the machine 10, according to the invention. The control system 100 of the machine 10 comprises a processing circuitry 101 and a memory 102. The memory 102 contains instructions executable by the processing circuitry 101 , whereby the control system 100 is operative for performing any of the embodiments of the method for handling error messages arising at any of multiple systems of the mining or construction machine 10, which is described in this disclosure.
[0040] According to other embodiments, the control system 100 may further comprise a communication unit 104. The communication unit 104 may be considered to comprise conventional means for communication with the mining or construction machine, such as a wireless transmitter and receiver, for e.g., performing the obtaining 101 , evaluating 102, providing priorities and displaying 106 the one or more error message with the highest priority. The communication unit, or another communication unit (not shown) may be used for communication with any other supervising system, for example an online system, a cloud or thelike. The instructions executable by the processing circuitry 101 may be arranged as a computer program 103 stored in said memory 102.
