Embodiment 10

[0043] Embodiment 10 includes a catheter retention platform 12 having a base 13 and an angled plate (or sloped plate) 15, a pair of airway tubes 14 threadably connected to the platform 12, and an operatively connected To the platform 12 a mouthpiece 16 for closing the mouth and for the support of the platform 12 .

[0044] The mouthpiece 16 includes an outwardly extending stem portion 18 to which the platform 12 may be mounted and thereafter incrementally (or progressively) slid from the mouthpiece 16 and the patient's nostrils into an optimal position. As shown in FIG. 2 , platform 12 may also pivot about rod portion 18 .

[0045] The platform 12 is slightly angled in configuration rather than having a flat horizontal surface as in the prior art. This angle improves the alignment (or alignment) of the airway tube 14 relative to the nostrils. Proper alignment increases the likelihood that the PAP seal will not be broken (or broken).

[0046] There are two types of airway tu...

Abstract

An improved treatment of obstructive sleep apnea is disclosed. A method and various device combinations are presented. The device combinations describe optimal adjustments to properly position a nasal pillow in each of a patient's nares. A novel swivel joint is described to which a nasal pillow is slip-fit over. The swivel joint prevents loss of a proper seal between the nasal pillow and nare which may otherwise occur as a result of head movement. Also presented is an improved obturator mouthpiece design which substantially eliminates air flow through the oral cavity resulting from leakage in the oropharynx.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 766,433 filed January 19, 2006, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference herein in their entirety for all purposes. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a device and method for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). More specifically, the present invention relates to methods of more effectively maintaining airway seals within the nostrils or oral cavity. Background technique [0004] The prior art has discussed various methods for delivering positive airway pressure (PAP) to a patient during sleep to prevent Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). While prior art has been developed utilizing face masks to cover both the oral and nasal cavities, these designs are bulky, tend to leak and inhibit the wearer's ability to sleep. [0005] Recent developments in the prior art have focused...
