Embodiment Construction

[0011] Dual Transport Mode (DTM) combines two basic technologies used to build high-capacity networks—circuit switching and packet switching. The idea behind DTM is to provide high-quality transmission for high-speed networking and the ability to quickly adapt bandwidth to business changes. DTM is designed to be used in an integrated service network for both distributed communication and one-to-one communication. DTM can be used directly for application-to-application communication, or used as a carrier for higher layers such as Internet Protocol (IP).

[0012] The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) specification (45.005§4.1.1) allows the output power to be reduced when multiple uplink time slots are active under DTM. In the case of only two valid uplink time slots, this power reduction may not be necessary in packet switching mode. However, under DTM, when circuit switched time slots are used to transmit voice, when more than one packet switched uplink time slot is als...

Abstract

The present invention discloses a system and method of re-distributing power output by a portable mobile communications device while operating in dual transfer mode (DTM). The device determines if more than one uplink slot is active 320 and if DTM is active 330. If so, power can be separately regulated 350 for packet switched and carrier switched uplink slots. The device determines whether the circuit switched slot is being used for a voice call that is not in a handsfree or speakerphone mode 510 and evaluates factors associated with the current operating conditions 520. New power settings are calculated 530 based on the mode for the active circuit switched slot and the factors associated with the current operating conditions of the device. The new power settings are then applied 540 to the active uplink slots such that power is re-distributed on a per slot basis that is not necessarily divided equally among all active slots.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a portable mobile communication device and system, and more particularly, to a portable mobile communication device that can dynamically control the power used for transmission while in a dual transfer mode (DTM) based on the current state of the portable mobile communication device , Systems and methods. Background technique [0002] DTM allows both circuit switched (CS) and packet switched (PS) applications to be performed when more than one time slot is available for portable mobile communication devices. However, the fixed total output power available for portable mobile communication devices means that multiple uplink time slots are forced to share the total output power. Typically, the output power will be divided equally among the effective time slots, and applications that use these time slots are forced to operate at the allocated power. This may not always be the most efficient distribution of output power based on...
