A processor operates on samples of a digital output signal to determine samples of a digital correction signal. The output signal samples are directed to an output channel for transmission from a speaker. The digital correction signal samples are supplied to a first digital-to-analog converter for conversion into an analog correction signal. The subtraction circuit generates a difference between a first analog signal provided by a microphone and the analog correction signal. The analog correction signal is an estimate of a contribution to the first analog signal due to a direct path transmission between the speaker and the microphone. The processor also receives a digital input signal derived from the difference signal, and, performs acoustic echo cancellation on the digital input signal to obtain a resultant signal. The acoustic echo cancellation is configured to remove contributions to the digital input signal due to reflected path transmissions.

In some embodiments, spatially realistic audio may be provided for a conference call. Voices from participants on the left side of a display, in a conference call, may be directed through audio on the left side of the display at the other conferencing system in the conference call (similarly for voices from the center and right side of the display). In some embodiments, two speakers may be used in the system to create synthesized stereo sound at a location specified by directional information received as side information along with the existing audio channel. The location may be determined by using beamforming with integrated microphones on a camera or speakerphone. In some embodiments, the audio signal and directional information may be sent in the form of a left audio channel and a right audio channel.

An apparatus and method of integrating a wireless telephone and a cordless telephone is taught. A docking station is used which receives a wireless telephone and electrically interfaces with in, including power, audio and data interfaces. A controller manages the interface to a transceiver, and speakerphone. A cordless telephone communicates with the transceiver, thereby enabling the utilization of a cordless telephone over a wireless telephone network. No wiring or installation is required, and the convenience and usability of the medium is enhanced.

A telephone docking station that combines the operation of a wireless telephone, a cordless telephone, and a land-line telephone interface is taught. The wireless telephone and land-line interface provide telephone resources to the cordless telephone, which functions as a telephone terminal unit. A system and method for determining a speaker's position and a generating a display showing the position of the speaker. In one embodiment, the system comprises a first speakerphone system and a second speakerphone system communicatively coupled to send and receive data. The speakerphone system comprises a display, an input device, a microphone array, a speaker, and a position processing module. The position processing module is coupled to receive acoustic signals from the microphone array. The position processing module uses these acoustic signals to determine a position of the speaker. The position information is then sent to other speakerphone system for presentation on the display. In one embodiment, the position processing module comprises an auto-detection module, a position analysis module, a tracking module and an identity matching module for the detection of sound, the determination of position and transmission of position information over the network. The position processing module comprises a position display module and a position translation module for receiving position information from the network and generating a user interface for display. The present invention also includes a method for determining speaker position and presenting position information.

The present invention is directed to a telephone equipped with multiple microphones that provides improved performance during operation of the telephone in a speaker-phone mode. For example, the multiple microphones can be used to improve voice activity detection, which in turn, can improve echo cancellation. In addition, the multiple microphones can be configured as an adaptive microphone array and used to reduce the effects of (i) room reverberation, when a near-end user is speaking, and/or (ii) acoustic echo, when a far-end user is speaking.

Disclosed is a method of controlling a mobile phone capable of processing incoming call signals, alert sounds and speech signals from a caller, comprising setting modes to be implemented in an audio signal sending mode for outputting audio signals and alert sounds to an external audio player equipped with a radio, modulating an audio signal or an alert sound generated during a mode implemented in the audio signal sending mode to a wireless signal having a predetermined frequency and sending the modulated signal or sound to the radio in the external audio player, and outputting an audio signal or an alert sound generated during a mode that is not implemented in the audio signal sending mode through a speaker of the mobile phone.

A system such as a speakerphone may include a processor, memory and an array of microphones. This invention is a wireless, speakerphone accessory that allows the user to be in either public or private communication with a remote electronic device like a mobile telephone. The accessory includes a detachable ear bud that can be worn in a user's ear so that only the user hears the audio signal being received. When the ear bud is coupled to the speakerphone accessory, the circuitry in the ear bud is used to control a loudspeaker and other components in the accessory so as to convert the combined device in to a speakerphone that may be heard by the user and others in his immediate vicinity. The speakerphone accessory optionally includes pockets for receiving rechargeable batteries, as well as utility pockets for holding spare components like ear sleeves. A hands-free teleconferencing apparatus for use with a wireless telephone for enabling multiple users to participate in a telephone call in a hands-free environment. An adapter of the apparatus configured to connect to a wireless telephone includes circuitry for communicating with at least two external speakers and at least one external microphone. The communications between the adapter and the external speakers and microphone may be wired or wireless. If wired, the external speakers and microphone may be part of respective earbud devices or headsets that connect to the adapter. Each earbud device includes an acoustic transducer that functions as an audio speaker and may include a microphone that converts the users' voices into electric audio signals. If wireless, the external speakers and microphone may be in respective headsets that have respective wireless transducers for communicating wirelessly with respective wireless transducers in the adapter.
