Embodiment Construction

[0019] By using compression in the VIA field to reduce signaling expenses in SIP messages, certain embodiments disclosed herein provide improved SIP signaling for 3G wireless networks. For example, one method disclosed herein allows the VIA header to be compressed by eliminating redundant address information found in each intermediate address along the path the message passes. The alternative method allows to compress the VIA header by marking certain elements of the header and replacing the original string with the token in the VIA header.

[0020] After reading this specification, those skilled in the art will understand how to implement the invention in various optional embodiments and optional applications. However, although various embodiments of the present invention have been described herein, it should be understood that these embodiments are only presented in an exemplary and restrictive manner. Therefore, the detailed description of the various alternative embodiments ...

Abstract

Session initiation protocol ''SIP'' signaling for 3G wireless networks is provided by using compression in the VIA field to reduce the signaling overhead in SIP messages. Methods of compression include eliminating redundant address information found in each intermediate address along the path traveled by the message and tokenizing certain elements of the header and using the tokens in the VIA header in place of the raw strings. A network device receives (250) an SIP message and examines the VIA field in the header information of the SIP message to identify (260) the domain from which the SIP message was sent. If the domain is not the same (270) as the current domain, then the network device appends (280) the current domain in the VIA field and sends the message along its path to the destination node. If the domain is the same (270) as the current domain, then the network device compresses (290) the domain information and appends (300) the compressed domain information in the VIA fieldand sends the message along its path to the destination node.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to the field of wireless communication, and more specifically relates to an improved session initiation protocol signaling of a 3G wireless network that uses compression in the VIA field to reduce signaling expenditure in session initiation protocol messages. Background technique [0002] Session Initiation Protocol ("SIP") is an application layer control protocol that can establish, modify, and terminate multimedia sessions (also called "conferences") or Internet phone calls. SIP is defined in RFC2543. SIP can invite participants to single-point conferences and multi-point conferences, and does not require the initiator to be a member of the conference that is sending the invitation. Medium and participants can be added to existing conversations. Obviously, SIP supports name mapping and redirection services, while allowing ISDN and intelligent network telephone user services. These conveniences also allow for pers...
