The smoke meter is mainly characterized in that the outlet of the detecting path of the smoke meter is provided with a transparent sheet capable of observing the bending flow of detected gas, and a straight line representing the optical axis of the photometric system of the smoke meter is marked on the transparent sheet. The measuring method is mainly characterized in that coloured gas passes throughthe detecting path and an air curtain of the smoke meter; the optical distance of a light beam of the photometric system of the smoke meter in the bending flow of the coloured gas can be obtained by observing the straight line on the transparent sheet, and the obtained optical distance and the optical distance of the coloured gas in the detecting path are added to obtain the valid smoke column length of the smoke meter. The invention has the advantages that the transmission-type smoke meter has more scientificity, seriousness, objectivity and impartiality.
