The sub-pixel downsampling based LED display method comprises the steps of receiving an inputted original image; carrying out sub-pixel downsampling on the original image so as to acquire a plurality of pieces of sub-pixel color data corresponding to each LED display unit; carrying out color complementing treatment on the plurality of pieces of sub-pixel color data of each LED display unit so as to acquire a plurality of pieces of color complementing treated sub-pixel color data corresponding to the LED display units; and respectively driving a first color LED, a second color LED and two third color LEDs in the corresponding LED display unit according to the plurality of pieces of color complementing treated sub-pixel color data of each LED display unit so as to carry out image display. The LED display method provided by the invention carries out image display by adopting a specific physical sub-pixel layout, such as LED layout, and combining a sub-pixel downsampling technology and a sub-pixel color data color complementing treatment algorithm, thereby being capable of effectively improving the brightness and the resolution of a display screen.
