A pyrotechnic initiator (also initiator or igniter) is a device containing a pyrotechnic composition used primarily to ignite other, more difficult-to-ignite materials, e.g. thermites, gas generators, and solid-fuel rockets. The name is often used also for the compositions themselves.

Electro-pyrotechnic initiator

An device for use in an electro-pyrotechnic initiator comprises a header, a foil resistive strip, a substrate, and a current source. The substrate is mounted on the header. The foil resistive strip is mounted on the substrate. The energy source is connected to the resistive strip. When current flows through the resistive strip, the resistive strip generates enough heat to spark autoignition of a pyrotechnic material. The pyrotechnic material is in direct contact with the resistive strip. For an energy input of up to 115 microjoules, the resistive strip can cause autoignition in less than 25 microseconds. In a second embodiment, an electro-pyrotechnic initiator for use in a "smart" airbag system comprises a header, a foil resistive strip, a substrate, a current source connected to the resistive strip, and a control circuit. The control circuit is designed such that it will cause current to flow through the resistive strip when the circuit receives an appropriate signal. A ceramic capacitor can be used as an energy source for the resistive strip.

Active venting apparatus and method for airbag systems

Enhanced airbag modules and associated methods are provided. An airbag module according to the invention may have a cushion with an inflatable protection zone and a flexible venting tube coupled to the inflatable protection zone. A closure mechanism may be used to compress the flexible venting tube against an anchoring member, such as a housing of the airbag module or a vehicle feature, until venting through the flexible venting tube is needed. The closure mechanism may then be actuated, for example, by igniting a pyrotechnic within a specially designed bolt of the closure mechanism. The bolt may, for example, have a bore with a pyrotechnic initiator molded-in-place within the bore. The bolt may fracture to open the closure mechanism, thereby permitting inflation gas to flow out of the inflatable protection zone via the flexible venting tube.

Hermetically sealed actuator

An actuator connected to receive high pressure gas from a pyrotechnic initiator incorporates a primary piston and a secondary piston mounted for limited movement along cylindrical bores in a housing; the pistons are held in a fixed inactive position and are restrained from movement within the housing by a tension screw connected to the primary piston and the housing. The tension screw incorporates a calibrated reduced diameter section that ruptures at a predetermined applied force to permit the pistons to move within the housing. Gaseous products resulting from initiation are trapped and maintained within the housing by an expandable bellows secured internally of the housing at one end of the bellows and secured at the opposite end of the bellows to the interior of the housing. A calibration / test port extends through the housing into the bore externally of the bellows to permit calibration and testing of the actuator without initiating the pyrotechnic device.
