Embodiment Construction

[0063] Embodiments of the invention relate to a device for facilitating the introduction of an infusion device, in particular a cannula of the infusion device, into the subcutaneous layer of a patient's skin.

[0064] Referring to Figures 1, 2, one embodiment of a device 100 is shown. Device 100 is used to introduce a cannula of an infusion device, such as a set, site, or other access device, into the skin of a patient. The set, retainer or other access device may then be used to infuse medication or other fluids into the patient, such as from an infusion pump.

[0065] Device 100 generally includes housing 110 , cylindrical hub 120 , needle handle 130 , cannula 140 , spring 150 , adhesive portion 160 , and cover 170 . As will be described further below, the various components of device 100 are configured to assist in introducing the cannula of the infusion set into the patient's skin.

[0066] Referring now to FIGS. 3-5 , the housing 110 is shown. The housing 110 is prefer...

Abstract

A device for inserting a subcutaneous infusion device into skin of a patient. The device can include a housing (110), a needle hub (130) including a needle (336), a sleeve (140), and a spring (150) engaging the needle hub. The device can also include a cap (170) coupled to the housing, and a retention member (520, 540) configured to maintain the device in a ship state prior to decoupling of the cap from the housing. In one example, the retention member can include a boss coupled to the cap and configured to engage the infusion device to maintain the infusion device in the ship state prior to decoupling of the cap from the housing. In another example, the retention member can include a tab (540) formed by the sleeve, the tab engaging a bead (510) on an internal surface of the cap when the sleeve moves relative to the housing while the device is in the ship state.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a device for facilitating the introduction of a cannula of an infusion set into the skin of a patient for administering a substance to the patient. Background technique [0002] Infusion sets are used to infuse substances, such as drugs, into the subcutaneous layer of a patient's skin. Devices are known to assist in inserting the cannula of an infusion set into the skin of a patient, for example some devices use a spring to drive a needle automatically into the skin of the patient to guide the cannula of the infusion set into the subcutaneous layer. [0003] Because the needle is used to introduce the cannula of the infusion set into the subcutaneous layer of the skin, there is a risk associated with inadvertent exposure of the needle. In addition, the patient may resist seeing the needle prior to insertion, eg, unwillingness to place the needle into the skin. Existing devices also do not properly conceal the needle b...
