Abstract

The method comprises the following steps: setting at least two pseudo wires (PW) as a protective group on a provider edge (PE) of a backbone network, wherein each PW in the protective group receives the same multicast data stream, either PW in the protective group functions as the working PW to retransmit the received data and the network group management protocol (IGMP) message, and the at least one other PW in the protective group functions as the backup PW to retransmit the IGMP message; detecting whether the link from the PE to a multicast source is normal; and switching between the host PW and the standby PW when detecting that the working link is in fault, to ensure uninterrupted multicast service of the user. Optionally, the method is implemented by the backup protection of the virtual switch interface (VSI). The multicast source protection method can reduce the number of the network equipment, simplify the network organization and ensure the network organization more flexible.
