Embodiment 1

[0030] In a first example, a sample of a retarder-inhibitor combination of the prior art comprising an HPHA inhibitor and a DNBP retarder was compared with a sample of the present invention comprising a 7-substituted-quinone methide retarder and an HPHA inhibitor. Samples of retarder-inhibitor combinations were compared. The retarder was dosed to each sample at 350 ppm by weight of monomer and the inhibitor was dosed at 150 ppm by weight of monomer in a continuously stirred tank reactor. Both samples were heated to 120°C for 1 hour. The prior art sample yielded 539 ppm undesired polymer, while the retarder-inhibitor combination of the present invention had only 38.5 ppm undesired polymer. This shows that not only is the retarder-inhibitor combination of the present invention able to match the performance of prior art combinations without toxicity, but in fact it has unexpectedly very good properties.

Embodiment 2

[0032] In a second example, samples of a prior art retarder-inhibitor combination comprising an HPHA inhibitor and a DNBP retarder were compared with a sample of the present invention comprising a 7-substituted-quinone methide retarder and an HPHA inhibitor. Samples of retarder-inhibitor combinations were compared. The retarder was dosed to each sample at 350 ppm by weight of monomer and the inhibitor was dosed at 22.5 ppm by weight of monomer in a continuously stirred tank reactor.

[0033] Both samples were heated to 120°C for 1 hour. The prior art sample yielded 573 ppm undesired polymer, while the retarder-inhibitor combination of the present invention had only 62 ppm undesired polymer. This shows that the retarder-inhibitor combination according to the invention can even significantly suppress the production of undesired polymers in emergency situations when no additional inhibitor can be added.

Abstract

The invention provides a composition of matter and a method of its use in preventing unwanted polymerization reactions. The composition comprises an inhibitor and a retarder. The inhibitor is highly effective. The retarder is reliable under extreme and emergency situations. The inhibitor can be an alkylhydroxylamine. The retarder can be a 7-cyano-quinone methide. The combination of the inhibitor and retarder has been found to be far more effective than expected.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] none. [0003] Statement Regarding Federally Sponsored Research or Development [0004] none. Background technique [0005] The present invention relates to compositions of matter and methods of using the compositions to inhibit the polymerization of vinyl aromatic monomers. Many of these monomers undesirably polymerize during various stages of their manufacture, processing, handling, storage and use. These undesired polymerization reactions lead to loss of production efficiency because they consume valuable reagents and because they require additional purification steps to remove undesired polymers. Undesirable polymerisation is a particular problem caused by vinyl aromatic monomers and forms undesired polymers during purification. [0006] Two classes of compounds have been developed to inhibit unwanted polymerization reactions, inhibitors and retarders. Inhibitors prevent polymerization from occurring. However, ...
