The method comprises: obtaining feature information sent by a terminal, wherein the feature information includes at least one of an image feature, a human face feature or a tag feature; retrieving a picture with the matching degree with the feature information, greater than a preset threshold from a picture library, and determining the retrieved picture as a retrieval result; selecting a picture meeting a preset condition as an extended retrieval result from a cluster where the retrieved picture is located, wherein the cluster where the retrieved picture is located is a cluster corresponding to the type of the feature information; and returning the retrieval result and the extended retrieval result to the terminal. According to the picture retrieval method and apparatus, the retrieved picture serves as the retrieval result and the other picture meeting the preset condition in the cluster corresponding to the retrieved picture is selected as the extended retrieval result, so that a result meeting user requirements better can be retrieved and the retrieval accuracy and efficiency are improved.
