The method comprises following steps: starting a tail movement detection device and entering an animal tail movement detection mode; recurrently reading the detection result of each infrared unit within a preset first time interval; determining whether there is an infrared unit that determines sway of an animal tail; if there is an infrared unit that determines sway of an animal tail, then zero clearing is performed on all results; reading the detection result of each infrared unit in a preset second time interval; determining whether there is an infrared unit that determines sway of an animal tail within the preset second time interval; if there is an infrared unit that determines sway of an animal tail, then continuingly determining whether each infrared unit determines sway of the animal tail; if there is no infrared unit that determines sway of the animal tail, then all the data of detected animal tail movement is transmitted to a central processing unit for processing.
