Problems solved by technology

However, this approach greatly limits the flexibility offered by SFP optical transceivers, as it eliminates the ease of switching and reconfigurability of the switch / router platform
Also, if a single SFP optical transceiver fails, it forces removal of the entire module

Embodiment Construction

[0018] To facilitate the understanding of the embodiments, principles and features of the present invention, they are explained hereinafter with reference to their implementation in illustrative examples. Specifically, it will be described in the context that fiber optic connectors and SFP optical connectors are inserted into a retaining mount attached to a main body portion of a device housing of a network device by inserting a portion of the body of a housing assembly enclosing the fiber optic connectors. The transceiver is securely attached to the retention mount. However, embodiments of the invention are not limited to use in the described devices or methods.

[0019] The components and materials described below that make up the various embodiments are intended to be illustrative rather than restrictive. Many suitable components and materials which will perform the same or a similar function as the materials described herein are intended to be within the scope of embodime...

Abstract

A small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver module is provided. It includes a shell assembly that encloses an optical fiber connector configured to connect to a SFP optical transceiver anda retaining mount that is configured to be attached to a body portion of a device housing of a network device. The SFP optical transceiver is configured to interface a network device motherboard to afiber optic at a given port of the network device. The shell assembly is configured to removably latch onto the retaining mount. The shell assembly includes a base and a body coupled to each other. The body has a latch to securely attach the optical fiber connector and the SFP optical transceiver to the retaining mount while allowing the SFP optical transceiver to be swapped as needed to reconfigure the given port of the network device.

Description

technical field [0001] Aspects of the invention relate generally to providing communication, such as via small form factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers, and more particularly to maintaining SFP transceivers in place when they are installed on a network device. Background technique [0002] Optical transmitters and / or receivers, such as small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers, contain housings with appropriate electronic circuitry to interface with other optical communication devices. The front of the housing contains receptacles for receiving fiber optic connectors that connect to fiber optic cables. Optical transmitters and receivers are interconnected by fiber optic cables. [0003] SFP optical transceivers serve to improve product configurability by allowing transceivers to be swapped as needed to reconfigure a given port for the desired link range and media type. The SFP standard specifies a single-prong retention mechanism that secures an SFP optical tr...
