Embodiment Construction

[0024] figure 1 The method of the invention is illustrated. In step 100, a show is provided. A show includes a number of consecutive frames for rendering during normal playback of the show at a predetermined normal frame rate, in a predetermined normal frame presentation order. The presentation has a normal speed and normal direction of play presented to the viewer. For example, the presentation may be an audio presentation or a video presentation or a multimedia presentation with audio, video and text subtitles. The show may be broadcast or it may be received interactively.

[0025] In step 102, a trick play clip is selected for a trick mode. A trick-play clip contains a plurality of frames, and the trick-play clips are separated from each other by a plurality of frames defined as skim clips. Clips for multiple different trick modes can be selected during the process of creating a show (as shown), or alternatively, trick play clips are automatically selected as needed du...

Abstract

Multi-frame trick play clips of the stored performance are selected for playing in a trick play mode, portions between the trick play clips, at least as long as the trick play clips, are skipped in the trick play mode. The trick play clips are sufficiently long and presented at a sufficiently low speed so that the content of the trick play clips can be understood by a human audience.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention here relates to the field of trick play modes for rendering stored multimedia performances. These multimedia presentations typically consist of audio, video, and optionally presented text subtitles. A show usually has a normal forward speed at which the show is presented to the audience. Recording and playback devices for stored shows typically provide trick-play modes such as fast forward play, reverse play, and fast reverse play for video, allowing the user to skip material or more easily find a desired position to start recording or playback the show. Trick-play video modes are usually played at a different speed or in the opposite direction, and often with a different smoothness than normal playback. Audio and subtitles are not played during known trick video playback. Background technique [0002] During normal playback, video frames are generally presented to the viewer at a constant predetermined video frame rate, with each fra...
