Embodiment Construction

[0022] Embodiments of the present invention generally provide an ophthalmic lens with adjustable spherical refractive power and adjustable spherical aberration, and methods of manufacturing and using the same. In some embodiments, the lens (eg, IOL) can be formed as a two-element optical system whose refractive power and first or higher order aberrations can be controlled by adjusting the lateral offset between these elements. In many implementations, the thickness profiles of the two elements are designed such that a lateral offset of the elements relative to each other in a direction transverse to the optical axis can change not only the combined spherical power of the two elements, but also the The spherical aberration exhibited by the combination of elements. Such lenses may have various applications in accommodating refractive correction and / or static aberration correction. For example, the IOL relieves the accommodative burden on the ciliary muscle to achieve sharp visi...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a two element system for providing an ease of accommodation with variable-spherical aberration control. In one aspect, the present invention provides a two-element ophthalmic lens in which a lateral shift of the elements relative to one another can cause a variation not only in a spherical power provided by the lens but also in spherical aberration exhibited by that lens. In some implementations, the thickness profiles of the two elements are designed such that the variation in spherical aberration is positively correlated with that of the spherical power of the lens.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to an ophthalmic lens, and more particularly to an intraocular lens exhibiting accommodative power. Background technique [0002] An intraocular lens (IOL) is routinely implanted in a patient's eye during cataract surgery to replace the cloudy intrinsic lens. The refractive power of the intrinsic lens can be varied under the influence of the ciliary muscle to provide eye accommodation for viewing objects at different distances from the eye. However, most IOLs provide only monofocal power with no eye accommodation, or bifocal power with limited eye accommodation (often referred to as "pseudo-accommodation"). Known accommodating IOLs can provide greater eye accommodation than monofocal or bifocal lenses provide. Nonetheless, most such IOLs utilize a complex set of optical elements. Furthermore, such IOLs typically do not take into account aberrations as the lenses provide eye accommodation for viewing objects at...
