[0066] The present invention can be used in analyte monitoring systems using implantable sensors for in vivo determination of the concentration of an analyte (eg, glucose or lactose in a bodily fluid). The sensor can, for example, be implanted subcutaneously in a patient to continuously or periodically monitor analytes in the patient's interstitial fluid. In turn, this can be used to indicate the level of glucose in the patient's bloodstream. Other in vivo analyte sensors for insertion into veins, arteries or other parts of the body containing bodily fluids may also be used in accordance with the present invention. Typically, analyte monitoring systems are configured to monitor analyte levels over a period of time, which can range from days to weeks or longer.
