Abstract

The present disclosure relates to multi-channel fault detection with a single diagnostic output. For example, a multi-channel device with a single diagnostic status pin can be configured to detect if one or more channels have a fault. A multi-channel device that can operate within the system can communicate which of the multiple channels has a fault using only a single diagnostic status pin without an additional diagnostic control pin. A multi-channel device may output a fault signal on a diagnostic status pin and, in response to an interrogation input signal on the same channel as the faulty channel, indicate to the system which channel is the faulty channel.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to fault detection in electronic equipment, and more particularly to multi-channel fault detection with a single diagnostic output. Background technique [0002] Many integrated modules (including integrated circuits) use multiple pins to implement diagnostic functions. Some multi-channel products may have diagnostic status for each channel. In some cases, package size may limit the number of available pins. These products can use fewer diagnostic status pins, the disadvantage is that they can only detect that there is a fault somewhere in the device, but not which channel has the fault. Still other products may implement a diagnostic multiplexing method or a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). Multiplexers, SPI, and similar approaches can limit monitoring power and increase circuit complexity, and possibly increase the required number of pins for a given application of the circuit.
