Embodiment Construction

[0041] As described herein, various nodes in a 3GPP network including user equipment (UE) can be used to insert metadata in uplink traffic, enabling the network and / or (S)Gi-LAN to Make business-oriented decisions. For example, UEs can insert metadata into their uplink traffic, enabling better utilization of services in (S)Gi-LAN. In one embodiment, the network node is able to insert metadata, which is directly related to the UE and relates to the operating conditions of the network node the UE is using to send uplink data, enabling better utilization of Serve. Uplink traffic can be tunneled through the eNodeB and S-GW via GTP, so an embodiment that allows metadata to be inserted inside the GTP tunnel is described here.

[0042] To offload some processing tasks from a given user equipment (UE), and to enable lower power and lower cost device deployment, mobile network operators (MNOs) can offer value-added services to cellular Internet of Things (IoT) IoT devices ( VAS). A...

Abstract

As described herein, various nodes in a 3GPP network, including a user equipment (UE), can be used to insert metadata in uplink traffic so that the network and / or an (S)Gi-LAN can make traffic steering decisions based on the metadata. For example, the UE can insert metadata into its uplink traffic so that the services in the (S)Gi-LAN can be better leveraged. In one embodiment, network nodes are able to insert metadata that relates directly to the UE and that relates to the operating conditions of the network nodes that the UE is using to send uplink data, so that the services in the (S)Gi-LANcan be better leveraged.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 199,645, filed July 31, 2015, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference as if fully set forth herein. Background technique [0003] refer to figure 1 , (S)Gi-LAN 102 refers to the packet data network (PDN) between the Internet 103 and the general packet radio service (GPRS) support node (GGSN) or PDN gateway (P-GW) of the mobile core network 101 (for simplicity For the sake of consideration, it can be collectively referred to as GGSN / P-GW104 or P-GW / GGSN104). (S)Gi-LAN 102 is under the control of a Mobile Network Operator (MNO). Such as figure 1 As shown, when uplink data packets leave the (S)Gi-LAN 102, they are no longer under the control of the MNO, and the packets can generally be considered to have reached the public Internet 103. (S)Gi-LAN 102 may include Value Added Services (VAS). Examples of VAS typically inclu...
