Capacity enhancement for multi-code CDMA with integrated services through quality of service and admission control

With the addition of high-speed data traffic to traditional CDMA cellular networks, there is a need to efficiently utilize system capacity so that the quality of service of existing voice and low-speed data users is maintained while new high-speed data users are added to the network. Methods and systems are presented that control allocation of power to users, quality of service requirements, and / or user activity levels to enhance capacity utilization. These methods and systems are based on a method for estimating the capacity of a CDMA carrier with both voice and data users using an interference-based analysis of the reverse link. In particular, the methods enhance capacity utilization in a multi-code CDMA network architecture, in which several codes are allocated to a single high-speed data user for parallel transmission.

Method for hard handoff in a CDMA cellular environment

A method for performing a hard handoff of a call from a first cell site of a CDMA cellular network to a target cell site of a second cellular network, such as an AMPS network or a second CDMA network. As a mobile unit operating in the first CDMA network moves toward the second cellular network, the first cell site uses two separate RTD thresholds for comparison with a measured RTD distance between the mobile unit and the first cell site. Handoff is initiated when the RTD distance exceeds the first RTD threshold and is completed when the RTD distance exceeds the second RTD threshold. If the first cell site is not co-located with a cell site of the second network, the first cell site utilizes receivers placed in the target cell site for handoff. If the first cell site is co-located with a second cell site of the second network, the second cell site of the second network is always the target cell site.

Method of packet scheduling, with improved delay performance, for wireless networks

A new scheduling discipline is disclosed for the forward link of a wireless network such as a CDMA network. The new discipline, which we denominate Modified LWDF (M-LWDF), resembles the known LWDF discipline in that only one queue is served at a time, and the queue to be served is that having the largest weighted delay. According to M-LWDF, the weighted delay of the i'th queue is defined aswherein Wi(t) is a packet delay, a queue length, or an increasing function of packet delay or queue length for the i'th queue, ci(t) is a weight coefficient descriptive of channel conditions for the i'th user, and gammai is a fixed constant that can be chosen arbitrarily. We have found that if any scheduling discipline can yield stable queues for a given traffic pattern of arriving packets, then M-LWDF can, even under changing channel conditions. Moreover, we have found that M-LWDF can provide favorable QoS in terms of delay bounds.

Selectable mode vocoder management algorithm for CDMA based networks

ActiveUS7120447B1Different level of voiceIncrease link capacityPower managementReceivers monitoringTelecommunicationsManagement algorithm
A method and apparatus to dynamically control selectable vocoder rates in a CDMA network to optimally improve forward and reverse link capacity as necessary. To improve capacity, a number of vocoder rates are used, each requiring a different average data rate and providing a different level of voice quality. Vocoder rates are reduced to lower sector average output power thereby improving forward and reverse link capacity. Forward and reverse link loading are compared to established thresholds that, if exceeded, would trigger a forward link and a reverse link vocoder rate adjustment as necessary to improve network capacity. The forward link vocoder rate and reverse link vocoder rate may be set independently or the reverse link vocoder rate may be set as a function of the forward link vocoder rate to maintain a link balance.

Method and system for tracking software licenses and usage

Method and system for discrete soft handoff of a mobile terminal in a wireless CDMA network. A plurality of mobile terminal-base station channels used for soft handoff are reserved to perform soft handoff of a mobile terminal. Soft handoff of the mobile terminal is then performed in a discrete fashion by first predicting which of the reserved channels will be "strong" and "weak" channels for transmission of the next CDMA data frame. At least one of the strong channels is included in the active set of handoff legs used to transmit the next CDMA data frame. The next data frame is then transmitted via only those channels within the active set. This process repeats, wherein the strong and weak channels are predicted prior to the transmission of each CDMA data frame, at least one strong channel is included in the active set for each CDMA data frame, and each CDMA data frame is transmitted via those channels in the active set. Soft handoff occurs because those channels used to communicate each CDMA data frame will change based on the predicted channel strength for each reserved handoff leg. Because weak channels are not used for soft handoff, additional processing complexity, power consumption, and network architecture difficulties associated with prior art soft handoff methods are avoided. Yet there is no substantial loss in performance, because those CDMA data frames that would have been communicated over weak channels are insignificant when a best CDMA data frame is obtained by either CDMA frame aggregation or selection techniques. Thus, the present invention reduces processing requirements, power consumption, and architectural difficulties associated with soft handoff at substantially no performance loss.

Reverse link scheduler for CDMA networks

A base station (BS) is configured to support a plurality of mobile stations on the reverse link by selectively designating one or more of them as members in a rate-controlled set. Members follow the common rate control commands broadcast by the BS, while non-members do not. The non-members preferably fall back to a minimum data rate. Set members each provide feedback to the BS indicating whether the member is “mobile-limited” wherein it cannot increase its reverse link data rate even if commanded to do so by the BS, or whether the member is “command-limited” wherein the member could increase its data rate but is not permitted to do so by the BS. The BS dynamically adjusts membership in the set to maintain a balance between having too many mobile-limited or command-limited members, since either condition is inefficient. The BS also may adjust membership by attempting to equalize membership times in the set.

Method for enabling use of secondary pilot signals across a forward link of a CDMA network employing a slotted transmission scheme and time multiplexed pilot channel

A method enables the use of a secondary pilot signal and a secondary antenna(s) in the forward link of a CDMA-based cellular network employing a slotted transmission scheme with a time-multiplexed primary pilot signal, with backwards compatibility. The forward link is divided into a number of time slots. For communications with “legacy” mobile stations that expect transmissions from a single, primary antenna (and that expect a single, primary pilot signal), during some of the time slots, only the primary antenna is used for transmissions, including transmitting the primary pilot signal. Neither the secondary pilot channel nor any other signals from the secondary antenna are transmitted. During the remaining time slots: (i) the primary pilot signal is transmitted from the primary antenna, and the secondary pilot signal is transmitted from the secondary antenna, but at different times; and (ii) data meant for the legacy mobile stations is not transmitted.
